My dad has a 1983 DeLorean, trust me the 5 speed wakes that car up significantly. It’s really not as slow as everyone says. It’s just a normal amount of slow lol.
Those cars are still sexy to this day. I’m a fan of BTTF but I much prefer when people don’t turn their DMCs into time machines. This is also another car I regret not buying years ago. I remember one time looking at them and you could get one for 6 or 7k, probably not the finest examples but even those weren’t super expensive.
I've been watching all of your videos, the thing is... I don't care AT ALL about cars. Weird huh? There's something about the way you talk about them, your storytelling and your traveling and pointing out cool places that makes me, a guy who can't stand car talk, feel like I can't get enough of this channel. Thank you.
Perspective is good. People forget just HOW SLOW cars were in 1981. No one had figured out how to get decent power from desmogged cars, yet. Some more perspective: the Ferrari Mondial was released in 1981 for 2 and a half times the cost of the DeLorean's HIGHER eventual price of $25k. The Ferrari was maaaaaaaybe a tad quicker than the DeLorean. Corvettes only had about 180hp then from their 350 V8, substantially bigger than the DeLorean V6. The soon to be re-released Mustang GT with the "5.0" had around 140 hp. The DeLorean gets way more flack than it should, given 1981 realities.
Totally agree that 10.5 seconds to 60mph wasn't terribly slow for this smog-choked era. But even the anemic '81 Vette could do 0-60 in 8.1 seconds and it was almost $10k cheaper. (But nowhere near as cool in my opinion!) I'd suggest the DeLorean was a victim of the hype around the original DeLorean prototype, which was touted as having 200 horsepower and a 7 second 0-60 time. Agree that the DeLorean gets more flack than it deserves, but some of it was due to customer expectations being lowered by the time the production model hit the market.
I spent the whole day watching jalopnik's carspotting and videos on the cars you own. I'm glad there's people like you who create content on cars that aren't exotic or traditional classics, but forgotten and underappreciated
I own 4885 and it's a blast! The car is definitely a "smile machine" and not a "race machine" and it's tons of fun. People literally jump out of their cars at stoplights to take pics of the car...crazy and awesome.
Yes! So glad you enjoyed the vid! Thanks for the kudos. I'm always wondering where the prices of these are going. Right now they seem to be around $30-$40k for a decent example! I'd love to own one as well, though I would not be a purist. I'd like to find one with a blown motor and swap out the PRV.
To the one that said its a crap car. Depends on the restore condtion. If they used NOS parts you will have oroblrms. There a lot of partz out there that have been better made since then. Alit of good upgraded conpontets. This was just nit the car for you
you bring a lot to light which is most enlightening. Watched my other favorite car on your channel, and what you put into putting these together, to say the least is awesome. Enjoy the "what was seen in the movie" and what it actually is or what it is today. Looking forward to your next one.... Street hawk maybe? LOL.
That made me weep a little. If I ever get one, I will hang the motor up on a display rack, and give it the power it always should have had. Me to my passenger: "Where we're going, roads are all there are..."
Thank you for the positive review of the Delorean... The car gets such a bad rap.. Should have mine by the summer. And John Delorean just like Austin Tucker way ahead of his time...
Hello Road / Ethan Tufts. Hey Ethan. E bay is full of them for sale. Just go on E bay and type in Delorean and the ones for sale pop up... They are Reasonably priced also. The 5 speeds are better. I plan on Bagging and installing a 351 ford Cleveland in my next one and adding the DMC 17 inch wheels. The car performs much better with a V8 Motor.
I always wondered if the company had succeeded, what would a second DeLorean model be? A van with gull-wing doors? A station wagon? Who knows. Fun video Ethan, great stuff as always!
Me too! My guess is first they would have finally gotten a twin-turbo DMC-12 to market, putting to rest the idea that DeLoreans are slow. I've heard they had product planning meetings for a DMC-24 sedan, but I don't think it got any further than drawings. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it! :)
Great video Ethan! There's always something new to learn about the DeLorean's history. It's a fascinating car with a checkered past. Funny story, I never saw a DeLorean up close in real life up until I drove through West Sayville, NY fifteen years ago. Instead of seeing just one DMC-12, I gazed upon twenty of them in all their fully restored glory. I almost got into an accident as my head made a rubbernecking motion. I made a uey to check them out. The place none other than... P J Grady, Inc. the DeLorean Doc and restoration expert of the East Coast.
Fabulous! Did you know that you can buy a new one from Texas? The DeLorean Motor Company is alive and well today! Check them out at their website. On a side note, one of my other favorite cars is the Bricklin SV-1...I like it slightly more than the DMC-12....
DMC Houston is a great place for parts or if you wish to buy one. Plus they have ways to beef up the engine now with two diffrent stages to give it more power.
Love your videos had no idea you made one on this car. Only recently came across your videos I gotta watch all your content. One question though, which area are those twisty roads in?
Owner , long time enthusiast and pretty knowledgeable on the car, and its history. For the forum check out dmctalk. For parts, Delorean parts North West. Toby is absolutely a legend. Then there is also DMCH who has most of the parts based out of texas. THen we have Delorean Performance ran by josh out of ohio which is absolutely amazing, he does alot of many parts needed but imrpoved, made of better materials. The forum has a few amazing members like Dave McKeen who makes solid state relays for the car, esp the RPM relay. Check out the forum and some of the vendors, will help the car ALOT.
Sorry no-I thought about shooting some video of the VIN but I never did it. The owner is here if you'd like to reach out to him: turo.com/rentals/cars/ca/marina-del-rey/delorean-dmc-12/335668
I thought you had a DeLorean and my thoughts/comment was going to be "It's a DeLorean! You have a DeLorean!?... I'm incredibly jealous, even though i know how bad their reliability can be it would still be awesome to own one that runs and drives" Then you said you were renting it via turo and i got a little sad 😅 I don't even think they have DeLorean's in Australia... I've never seen one in person. Oh and i imagine partly why the car is slow is because it's made out of steel 😂 other than the engine not being too powerful of course, although i imagine if they car weighed a lot less it could be more zippy like a MX-5... although i've never driven one so that could be completely wrong. The DeLorean really does seem like one of those "We're lucky this car even exists" sort of vehicles with how badly it did, it may not have done well back then but there is huge appreciation for the car now and i imagine a lot of people would want to own the car even if they didn't drive it that often
This was a good first taste of DeLorean for me. I love the fact that they make everyone smile. The car is really not THAT heavy, just heavier than they intended. The stainless steel panels are actually affixed to a fiberglass underbody. But you're right, the added weight came at a cost. But yeah I would definitely own a DeLorean!
Ohh so it has a fireglass underbody... It would be interesting to see someone recreate the panels in Aluminium and see how much of a performance difference it makes
I drive mine often no major issues just normal maintenance like any other car keeps this thing going, even mpg is crazy good which you wouldn't think for a car of this age!
The slow comments always make me laugh.. Vintage 70s tech/ values skyrocketing. Sits very low, small, blends in with road so you want to race around in todays traffic/idiots/distracted drivers/cops??GTFO

Haha!! Yeah I would definitely love to drive a 5-speed DMC. Hope to do that this year...
Which is more than enough to kill ya. Hahahaha!
Its not a slow car for the the time it was made in.
@@silverwings11035 exactly, most cars were slow back then, but the Delorean gets all the blame

Agree-also a big fan of the movie but I'm always more excited when I see an unmodified one.

The locations was an insanely cool addition to this video! I yelled out "WOW" every time 😂
This is the coolest failure in automotive history.

car was always marketed as a luxury flashy cruiser.
Good call on the BTTF shooting locations.
