Pumped Up Kicks vs Somebody That I Used To Know (Nightowl mashup) - Foster The People vs Gotye (feat. Kimbra) Twitter: / actualnightowl Instagram: / actualnightowl
Yeah. Gotye's instrumentals give it a sort of cadence that suggests the person is desperately trying to hold on to their sanity and is on the verge of losing all sense of right and wrong.
When the quiet kid gets his heart broken, and the depressed kid becomes quiet, so they join forces to be each other's emotional support buddy, and then they become best friends and live an amazing life together
@@carl_consumer.of.reality Guess it depends on if you consider a song's tone the product of its lyrics or musicality. 😜 From my perspective, the instrumental is highly dissonant with the subject matter. This mash-up brings the two back where they oughta be... _"...like when you said you felt you so _*_happy_*_ you could run, better run... faster than my bullets."_
James they meant that it becomes darker cuz they r saying “somebody I used to know” which can either be interpreted as either the shooter or the victim, plus, you have so much to see😂😔
This is the highly introspective version of Pumped up Kicks where Robert realizes he's not the same person anymore and he doesn't know the innocent kid anymore before he decided to plot a school shooting
It’s eerie in a fascinating way. Very surreal. And the tone change in the second verse was jarring in a really weird way. Kinda threatening. Stunning. I love it.
I really appreciate how well and carefully blended the two songs are. Parts of the instrumentals are always combined beautifully. However, when the vocals of one song are playing, the instrumentals of the other song take lead behind it, making every moment feel like a true mashup.
And in another room, his on-and-off girlfriend pens the words "now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over..." in glitter pen. (The _final_ breakup note lands in 3rd Period.)
I used to dance to Pumped Up Kicks when I was a kid and my dad thought nothing of it. I'm 97% sure he doesnt know the actual meaning to it On a lighter note when I was younger I used to pretend my toys were dating and Somebody That I Used To Know was the song they sung as they broke up
I think what makes it darker besides Gotye's amazing instrumentals is that "Somebody that I Used to Know" gives us more context to "Pumped Up Kicks". It tells more reasons for the school shooting to take place. In STIUTK, Gotye is slowly getting insane after a breakup of a toxic relationship, and even after they have broken up, Kimbra (I think that's her name) still treats him like shit which makes Gotye believe that she's well, somebody that he used to know meaning he can just kill with no remorse so he stole his dad's gun and the shoot him first, and then all the other kids with the pumped up kicks which may include the girl herself. This means that this is the perfect mashup.
All the memes aside, this is a really interesting take on a mashup, most of the time its the background of one song and the lyrics of the other, but this switches between them. Very unique, i really like it!
This song makes me imagine a conversation between the quiet kid contemplating attacking his school and his best friends trying to find out why he’s been talking with them less and less

You thought you where just dating another bad boy. It was fun and you really liked him. Eventually you did break up, you thought it ended on good terms, but things took a turn.
It took the comments on this video for me to finally understand. I mean I guess I had some idea, but I was hoping i was wrong. Guess not. It's so catchy though!
Mayo Cult I loved both of these as a kid, but English isn’t my first language so I heard them on the radio or on CDs without actually understanding the lyrics. I just liked how they sounded... I understood some of “somebody that I used to know”, but I thought “pumped up kicks” was just some “cool guy sings that he’s cool” type of song. I was so shocked to learn the actual lyrics years later-
Reminds me of the time my HS played Pumped Up Kicks over the PA system one morning. My friends and I all had panic attacks and got tf out of the hallway.
80% of people who know how to speak English fluently and have learned it as their primary language typically fail to have good grammar, Don't feel bad there's always room for growth.
I’ll tell you about somebody I used to pump up. My ex-girlfriend who cheated on me with several skinny white boys. You wanna know how I found out? I found out the hard way. I found her video on PornHub when I was feeling lonely and horny one night. Worst mistake of my life was believing that she went to church every Sunday while I stayed home and drank beer while watching the TV
picture this: you are really good friends with the kid that everyone makes fun of. you get in a car crash and die, and that friend is really sad. you're all that he thinks about now, day and night. one day the thoughts become too much for him and he turns to his dad's gun for answers. he decides hurting those who hurt him will make him feel better but when he fires that first shot, he realizes his mistake and you start crowding his mind, a hallucination trying to convince him to stop. but he knows there's nothing he can do but keep shooting bc no one will care if he stops now. he pictures you crying next to him begging for him to stop but he doesnt. he keeps shooting as his vision is being blurred by tears welling up, thinking about you...
From what you said i think of it as they are both guys and best friends but one of them is gay (the shooter) and loves the other guy and was planning on telling him by taking him to this beautiful place and telling him how he feels but as he was driving someone else crashed into the car which then killed his friend, and that made him descend into madness because he was the only thing he had left, so he went to get the gun and started shooting up the school thinking there was nothing else left to lose.I hope this is not rude changing the story lol but this is just how i see it
(I know this isn't that deep but I thought it would be fun to come up with my own story for this mashup because I saw others doing the same) This strikes me as two shooters working together. One is more angry and bitter while the other is more of a sad-angry mix. He's a bit more hesitant to be doing this with his friend, he recognizes and thinks of all of the other people at the school as actual people. Still, they are people he "used to know". The rest of his lines are him remembering the torment he received from his fellow classmates. Lastly, the female voice is someone that "used to know" either one or both of the shooters.
The female is one of their mothers expressing her dissapointment and always knowing one of them was always fucked up in the head and was an abusive son.
I take it like this: The quiet kid and the popular kid were friends. The quiet kid lost it one day and shot his friend's girlfriend. Now the popular kid is now trying to talk the quiet kid.
Enough with the inappropriate comments.

I've just been sent back to when these were my two favorite songs when I was like 8
You liked pumped up kicks when you were 8? What happened to your classmates, man.
you just essencened that so perfectly 👌. like in an almost creepy way
Honestly, my parents loved Foster the People and Somebody That I Used to Know
I mean, I still like them a lot lol.
I was so shocked to learn the actual lyrics years later-
this perfectly sums up the book I'm writing
This is like if the lyrics to Pumped Up Kicks actually matched the tune
these are the two songs that give me the most nostalgia, thanks
Yo my school played Pumped Up Kicks at our swimming carnival no joke. My friends friggin died inside
my pe teacher played pumped up kicks in pe class, me and my fruiend was laughing and told him what the song was about andhe shut it of.
Reminds me of the time my HS played Pumped Up Kicks over the PA system one morning. My friends and I all had panic attacks and got tf out of the hallway.
They played "youth of a nation" at my catholic retreat
I'm gonna miss this decade once its officially over, can't believe that it is actually this close to coming to an end
Be happy cause it has happend!
Sorry for my bad english 😓

Somebody That I Used To Pump Up
I’ll tell you about somebody I used to pump up. My ex-girlfriend who cheated on me with several skinny white boys. You wanna know how I found out? I found out the hard way. I found her video on PornHub when I was feeling lonely and horny one night. Worst mistake of my life was believing that she went to church every Sunday while I stayed home and drank beer while watching the TV

this mashup makes me feel an emotion that i cant describe in words
upbeat dread
picture this: you are really good friends with the kid that everyone makes fun of. you get in a car crash and die, and that friend is really sad. you're all that he thinks about now, day and night. one day the thoughts become too much for him and he turns to his dad's gun for answers. he decides hurting those who hurt him will make him feel better but when he fires that first shot, he realizes his mistake and you start crowding his mind, a hallucination trying to convince him to stop. but he knows there's nothing he can do but keep shooting bc no one will care if he stops now. he pictures you crying next to him begging for him to stop but he doesnt. he keeps shooting as his vision is being blurred by tears welling up, thinking about you...
That's deep. Like actually
umm.. i want to make this now, thank you
holy shit
my hearrrrrrrt :'(
From what you said i think of it as they are both guys and best friends but one of them is gay (the shooter) and loves the other guy and was planning on telling him by taking him to this beautiful place and telling him how he feels but as he was driving someone else crashed into the car which then killed his friend, and that made him descend into madness because he was the only thing he had left, so he went to get the gun and started shooting up the school thinking there was nothing else left to lose.I hope this is not rude changing the story lol but this is just how i see it
(I know this isn't that deep but I thought it would be fun to come up with my own story for this mashup because I saw others doing the same)
This strikes me as two shooters working together.
I love how people are writing comments trying to make a lore for this
Tf there is a fan base on the cringeee
This puts a whole new meaning to "somebody that I used to know".
"No you didn't have to shoot the school, now you're just some students that I used to know"
No joke, I've always confused these two songs with each other. Feels pretty cathartic that this mash up was made
I'll admit I was glad I found this. The shooting sound effects sound so real.

This song is like:
_A guy from some _*_American_*_ school was dating a girl. She broke up with him, so he shot his school up._
Exactly it's story.
I take it like this:
The quiet kid and the popular kid were friends. The quiet kid lost it one day and shot his friend's girlfriend. Now the popular kid is now trying to talk the quiet kid.
Ba Ba yikes that’s just distasteful
That’s exactly Heaters the musical, except for the fact that he decides he wants to _blow_ up the school
