My favorite knife/gear tends to be the gear that I have made or modify myself something about using something you put time and effort in making just increases the joy of using
YES THIS! lol. I love to customize most of my stuff in one way or another Anything with wood I strip the coating off, re-coat it myself with either boiled linseed oil, tung oil or something of the sort, Knives I may reshape the bevel depending on what it was originally and what I'm using if for, and possibly add a patina. Even clothes I sometimes alter a little even if its just a coat of waterproofing or some kind of bug repellent like DEET or my favorite, Permethrin which actually kills ticks n other bugs (just don't get it on you).
throughout my 70 years, I have gone through tons of gear and equipment..... some great, some terrible, and much more in between. Without getting long winded, I'll just tell you what I always carry in my almost old age today, and never without them. Gransfors axe, Silky Bigboy, Terävä Skrama 240, Rob Evans Bushtool, GEC two-bladed Pioneer Trapper slip joint, Two Cherries 8 inch straight draw blade, and 1 inch Scotch Eye auger; along with a pouch with sharpening and repair items and spools of bankline. Carried or transported in my canoe or 4x4 in my Timber Cruiser pack. My cook set is an old generic three-quart with a titanium Four Dog Stove contraption that fits inside; water bladders and a Sawyer mini usually in my pants pockets. Where I live, licensed hunting of feral hogs is legal all year, so I eat a lot of bacon as well
Favorite knife is one my wife bought for me - she scored an absolute homerun with the Joker Bushcrafter. Handmade in Spain. Awesome steel. Holds and edge like I can’t believe. Sharpens up like a dream. Perfect balance and fits my hand like it was made for it. I retired my Randall #1 and carry the Joker instead now.
For the price of a good knife you can buy what you need to start making your own, and probably pay for your first ten knives. I promise you that the first tool you make will be higher quality than what you can buy in a hardware store. A novice blacksmiths work is superior to Chinese goods. Rather than buying foreign goods, make your own stuff, source your material from your own countrymen. Spain is NOT known for it's steel, or it's craftsmanship. I promise you once you learn to heat treat metals properly yours will be superior quality. And I GUARANTEE you that steel came from China if it was from Spain.
@@bashkillszombies Wow. How many over-generalizations can you stuff into one paragraph. As someone who has actually made several hundred knives over the years, I would love to see an example of your handiwork. I’d also love to see the blacksmith shop you set up for $300.00. Your guarantees aren’t worth the pixels they occupy on my screen. As far as Spain not being known for its steel or craftsmanship - just - bullshit. Go do some research.
I found my favorite knife as a kid in the late '60s laying beside a football field. It's an early issue Ka-Bar USMC with a screw on and peened pommel. It had been used heavily by the poor soul who lost it. I continued it's use through Scouts as a kid, camping with friends as a teen and more advanced BC as an adult. It's never failed me from carving, shelter building, fish cleaning and even as a light chopper for rough carving. I've seen many pretty, temping knives, yet I passed on dozens as I only had to recall what I've accomplished with the Ka-Bar. My muscle memory knows my secondary just as well - a '70s USA made Schrade 25 OT. It was only recently that I learned it was also a favorite primary for Mors Kochanski for over a decade. A few years ago I decided to give my Ka-Bar some relief with a Cold Steel SRK. It hasn't disappointed. To finally scratch the scandi itch I bought a Marttiini. Again, a very good knife, but my BC heart still belongs to the Ka-Bar. My hatchet was a gift from my grandmother when I joined the Scouts. She pulled out a dusty old Germantown carpenters hatchet from her shed and gave it to me with a finger wag and words of caution. I treated it a couple years ago to a new 17" handle for it's approximate 100th birthday. It carries as many stories as the Ka-Bar. I have no plans to retire it or replace it.
I am the same way about my 40 dollar Sheffield Walmart survival knife. It has been through hell and back and keeps on working. Never failed me. I did an alteration to the handle by putting on a locking nut to blade from coming loose sine it is a rat tail knife. I also have a JEO-TEC blade and what a work horse it is. I do also own a k-bar from my time in the army. They are tried and true!
Such a great video..! No bs, straight to the point, no annoying music etc. It's been a long time for me. Been going through all my gear and getting day packs together for my wife and I. I am also doing a 3day plus bag for myself. My pack of choice is the Eberlestock Warhammer & Little Brother. As far as knives go, still a huge fan of my Mora's. Would love a nice gentleman's bushcrafter. I can make one, but time is limited...
@RobEvansWoodsman, what’s your preferred way for folks to contact you for MK1 knife order inquiries? I’d love to get some details and discuss placing an order.
A lot of great knives named in the comments. Educated audience. I like your choices and you can never go wrong buying quality. Thanks for the captivating video!
RE: Knives - I always carry my normal EDC pocket knife (CRKT M16) and a larger fixed blade (currently an ESEE 4). I'm looking to add an SAK (Victorinox Ranger 78) to the mix as well. I'm also a huge fan of the Gransfors Bruks small forest axe. I love that thing. Finally, I carry a silky gomboy folding saw in my hiking/overnight kit.
Hi Thomas !!! I have one of those knockoff 110 with the same wobbly hinge as well. My real 110's hinge is as tight as the day I got it after 50 years of nearly daily use. It's one tough knife. My 110 was gifted to me by my wife on our first Christmas. On my 70th birthday in 2022 she got me an new engraved 110. Funny thing I used it once but it's a heirloom. I have 112 Ranger with s30v steel that I'm currently using & knife is every bit as tough as a 110. Thank You -- Joe --
I have 2 110s and a 112. Awesome, solid , classic knives from decades in the past that are still great today. Seem to be overlooked by younger outdoorsmen. Kind of like they overlook good old walnut stocked rifles and shotguns.
I used a Buck Ranger for 20 years. Did everything I needed. Then found two Moraknives at a garage sale. A SS Companion and a SS Companion Spark, both never used in original blister packs. Love them, especially the Spark. I didn’t know what I was getting but they looked like good knives and I was starting to do more camping and they were $2 each!
We all have those items we probably should have second-guessed. Sometimes you need to learn what does not work before you get what does. I have a LT Wright (custom Hill People Gear edition), a Casstrom Lars Falt special edition and recently received a Mora Lok Wilderness. All awesome knives.
I agree, buying things that don’t work for us can be part of the process. Nice gear you have! I’ve been wanting to try the Lars Falt knife for a while now.👍🔪
My favorite knives are my LT Wright Jessmuk, Schrade 250T deerslayer in original 1090 carbon steel, and my original carbon steel old timer improved muskrat knife. They're all I need. Although I like my carbon LB7 folding shade I git for Xmas when I was 16, back in 1980.
My favorite knife is one I customized myself from a Pierre Santini butcher knife that has a Scandinavian grind, I turned it into kinda a seax style knife.
I like oversized mitts with a glove inside in the cold, use the gloves without the mitts for work that needs dexterity! Mitts are warmer under cold conditions!
My favorite bushcraft knife is a vintage Mora Damascus knife with a gorgeous pearlescent handle. I picked it up at an antique mall for $26, came with a leather sheath. It holds an edge very well, very thick and great for batoning, aggressive knurled spine. One of the accent pieces on the handle came loose, but I used apoxy resin to fix it.
Things that always come along on any trip: BPS Knives C1 Leatherman Skeletool Silky Gomboy Axe either Kalthoff Small Carver or a Wetterling that is older than me. And yes we want to see your knives and axes.
You have a sweet set of gear my friend, congrats! I just recently posted my axe and knife collection vids. You can look them up on my channel my friend.
Great video! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the mentality and benefits of purchasing quality gear. I remember watching your review of the Frost River Isle Royals Jr. Pack over and over before I bought mine. That pack was definitely expensive. But I have zero regrets about my investment. It was a matter of intentionally putting my money towards something quality made that would serve me the rest of my life. And in my experience, all Frost River gear is exactly that. I’m a middle aged woman with a smaller frame and found that for me, the Isle Royale Jr. is a good fit, but does require some added internal structure to prevent excessive slouching of the main bucket when partially loaded. I’ve been using a small wastebasket. But I think I’ll try cutting down a US military sleep pad to roll and fit inside for some lightweight structural support. Anyway…. It’s the best pack I’ve ever owned and I’ve never regretted buying it thanks to your review. (Just had to save up for a year and a half to get it.) Blessings to you sir, from central Indiana.
At 74, I've been an avid collector & user of blades since my teen years. Recently on a whim I cashed in $600+ dollars of my Cabela's reward points on my credit card for two Benchmade fixed blade knives; the Anonimus in CPM Cruwear & the Bushcrafter 162 in S30V just because I wanted to have some modern powder metal steel alloy blades. I searched the Cabela site for Magnacut steel but they didn't offer it. Why buy it when you can have it for no charge! As you say, sometimes you don't need an excuse to "pull the trigger" when the price is right ( like free )!
Im from the Bush of Alaska and am allways strapped and with several knives and and Norrdic carry axe. Main carry skinner with a sturdy blade I can split firewood hammering it with a piece of hard limb.
My favourite Bushcraft knife is actually my Helle Delle Chef Knife. Cooking in the outdoors is one of my favourite things about camping/bushcraft, and I really enjoy the luxury of having a properly sized chef knife to dice and prep with.
And that IS luxury ….£180 for a 1 purpose knife is way beyond what I would want to spend on a blade. Think I gave less than £13 for for a Masterclass Santuko with hone built in to the sheath on Amazon and 2 years on still a perfect prep knife. It’s just different strokes for different folks…..so long as you’re happy, all is good! 🤝
@@gazgf between out In the bush and in the kitchen at home, I get so much use out of it, I really don't mind. I get it's far too much to pay for most people, but if it's going to last, and I'm going to love using it, I really don't mind.
This is a great idea for a video. There is some gear that we could probably use specific long term reviews on - for example evaluating how the solar generators hold up after a couple years, but for most of basic gear, this sort of video makes more sense. All of the basic gear has some tradeoffs, and over time we get to know the gear better. You asked about which knife is currently our go-to: the Lars Fält Knife, made by Casström, with the Sleipnir steel, is my number one. I still use my Helle Temagami quite a bit, though, and if I am just banging around the woods at home, getting things done, I usually have my old standby, the Tops BoB, with me. The BoB is perhaps a little heavy, but it fits in my large hands so well, and it has that great finger guard that doesn't get in the way, but does provide some protection when it is cold, rainy, late, dark, and so forth. I use the BoB harder than any other knife, and nothing ever goes wrong, so there is something to be said for that. Making maple syrup this weekend - third weekend this season. Going to tap some yellow birch and some paper birch next weekend, and see if I can tell the difference between the sap. Great time of year to get outdoors and run wild.
Very nice gear my friend! I’ve been interested in trying out the Lars Falt knife for a very long time! I agree with the Bob, it’s a good knife I reviewed and traded some time ago. Perhaps I will get another one day🔪👍
My Favorite is the TOPS Brothers of Bushcraft (BoB) Fieldcraft 154cm Knife. I have a very nice leather sheath for it as the plastic sheath it comes with just wasn't gonna cut it for me. Knife has good wieght to it and a thick spine (had to put a 90 degree angle on the spine cause it didn't come with one which is weird) all in all it has done quite well for me. I also carry a Council Tool camp carver Axe with it. I don't have any complaints about it yet as I've only had it for a little under a year. and a tried and true baaco laplander folding saw.
Hey the 1/2" towards the tip on the spine of the fieldcraft model works great in both the 154cm and the 1095. Ive tried both. Did not have to modify.🤷♂️ just sayin.
I love knives, i geek out about them, ive Forged some myself. I love any knife that holds an edge and doesn't break. If its from the dollar store but it doesnt break, ill use it for years.
Great Review !!! Ive been camping since I was 8yrs old. Im 71 now & still camp regularly. Truth be told I use a 50 year old Buck 110 & a pair of Klein Tools Scissors for just about everything I do. As a back up, I have a Mora Garberg Carbon. Years ago I found an old hatchet head in my Grandfathers tool shed. I believe its a true temper. I rehandled it & use it all the time. As a side note, im retiring the 110 because im afraid I may loose it. Its now a family heirloom. Im replacing it with a 112 Ranger with the s30v steel. The blade is a little shorter & better complies with NYC knife laws more than the 110 does. Thank You for a great video -- Joe --
Hey Joe thanks for sharing your kit! I was thinking that vintage 110 was a real treasure and please don’t lose it lol😂. It’s amazing how long good gear will last when it’s used but not abused. Take care my friend.
As someone who lives in a town, in an apartment, i dont get out in the woods as much as i'd like to. But, i do have some fixed blade knives. One i'd say is going to be my favored bushcraft knife is the ontario knife co old hickory 5.5" hunter. (The blade is 5.5") Its solid, comfortable in hand, & neither pricy nor cheap. I also have a morakniv i got from a thrift store. I think its mora's mid range companion series. I'm unsure though. Those are my personal favored bushcraft knives. Thank you for your time, & the great video!
My bushcraft knife is an old Hickory butcher knife. I have put a hole in it for a lanyard and I took it apart and spread JB Weld on the knife to keep it together. My camp hatchet is a Boy scout hatchet that I have had for over forty years.
I have a white river fc pro the 3.5 inch. But i think for me i would like a 5 inch version in the future. I really appreciate its balance and of course its sharpened spine!!!
@@Woodswalker1965 i also have two of the Swiss tech Bushcraft/ survival knives available at Walmart of all places! Its a surprisingly adequate knife / fire system. Well thought out and very reasonable as far as the price. Maybe worth a look and a video review. Put it through its paces....
I’ve had great success with all Gransfor Bruks hatchets and axes and own the following: small hatchet, wildlife hatchet, Scandinavian, and American felling axe.
Couldn’t agree more! Really enjoyed seeing all of your fantastic gear.👍 Buy the best and you will most likely be very happy with it for the rest of your life, rather than buying cheap over and over again. Not saying you can’t find good equipment at a cheap price, it does take a lot of trial and error. Thanks for the video!👊
My favorite bushcraft knife that I currently have is an AA Forge Badger that was gifted to me by a fellow member of BCUSA. I’ve recently purchased an LT Wright Kamrat that I haven’t used much yet. Thanks for the video, I’ve really enjoyed it.
I have a Bark River , various Moras and others but my favourite is a cheap bushcraft model from Highlander outdoors here is the UK. For a larger knife i have a UK MOD Para machete and also use either my small Hultafors axe or Gerber axe.
Knife is a Condor Bushlore Black and yes the Gransfors small forest axe. As far as a larger axe is a Cold Steel Trail Boss. The Laplander saw is my go to cheap saw. As far as a rucksack is the the Nut Sac back pack. Some of these are more pricy than others. My Stove is a Fire Box Stove. These work period. Knives I have some that are expensive but I love some of the affordable ones. As far as clothing I need help....
Great stuff there my friend. You know I feel like a lot of people (myself included) overlook the Laplander these days but I’ve never broken a blade on one.
I love my GBASmall Forest and Scandinavian Forest axes. I do not regret buying my axes. I have a bevy of axes, mostly True Temper, which I have acquired over the past 50 years. I do not take a multifunction tool with me, but I do carry a good pocket knife, mostly Case XX. For clothing I have a full closet of ACU’s, including ECW and GoreTex. Boots, I prefer Cochran Combat boots, but the ACU ain’t bad. I have a large ruck sack, and an Alice pack, somewhere. My USA LBV will tote a lot. A lot of the stuff that I owned was issued to me, so the cost was free. Keep them three years and they are yours. My favorite walking boot is a pair of leather USMC combat boots, but Cochran are ok.
I have Rob's Bushtool in RWL34, also a pretty and very sharp knife. I haven't used it yet outdoors, I'm saving it until my favorite knife retires which is the Fallkinven F1x in LamCos (rehandled with linen micarta).
Buck 110 has been my combat, hunting, food prep, boy scout, Army Ranger, bush craft, wood carving and 30 year old, American made knife. Lifetime no BS warranty. I took the Buck factory tour and left my 30 year old 110 with a cool guy. When I picked it up an hour later it was newly reprofiled with a new belt sheath but, he didn't destroy the history of dents and patina either.
I have a cutlery sharpening business, been sharpening knives professionally for 18years. I'v sharpened many 110's and by far it is the toughest folding knife ever produced. If you can own but one knife, make it a 110.
Ive found just the regular cheap ragg wool gloves work well as a backup liner, I had to replace my liners this year as they had lost a lot of their wool especially in the finger tips, I still kept them though for warmer days
@@Woodswalker1965 basically anything u need for survival u can make bows and arrows with these 3 tools and u can make shelter too with wood and ease u can make a variety of primitive weaponry out of these 3 tools for defensive purposes out on the woods as well as traps this is all u need for not just surviving but thriving into the woods and wilderness
Great video for a Sunday morning, Wade. My 2 favorites and most used knives are a Skookum Bush Tool and the Sigmora made by Dan Koster for Sigma 3 Survival years ago. Both are in 3V steel, my favorite also.
I’ve got the rob evans FTP, excellent bit of kit. I’m lucky enough that Rob is local to me and he has been up to my camp a couple of times. He’s a no muss, no fuss kind of guy
Yup, I have a Council tool pack axe and a small Eastwing hatchet that has work for me for a few now. I have an Italian xl ruck sack from the sportsman guide that I modified to work for me. And the knife is a Kephart from Pks knive shop. I'm happy with everything so far. I also have a really nice 8x8 oilskin tarp from Bushcraft Spain. I love that tarp.
Hello Wade, nice video, nice gear, enjoyable to watch. One of my bushcraft knife and not the most expensive is the Hultafors black blade knife you reviewed a few years ago. Works great and was quite affordable.
I enjoy using my kabar knife in the woods. I actually use it. It's heavy and I can depend on it. I really like your axe. Plus, a multitool is a must for me.
You forgot to mention the sleeves behind each pocket that can be used to hold things like folding saws. If the IR Jr. seems heavy and uncomfortable, maybe a little too much space, check out the Frost River Cliff Jacobson Signature Pack. For some reason they only list it on their Day Packs page but IMO it’s a solid bushcraft pack. The thickness of the waxed cotton is 10 oz rather than the 18 of the IR Jr., but it still feels and performs solid yet only comes in at 2.5 lbs.
Another awesome video Wade! Like you, I have many knives. My favorite right now is my Enzo (Brisa) Trapper with a scandi blade and 01 tool steel. I have a Malone Knives Wingman as my neck knife. I have many GFB and Hultafors axes but usually tend to reach for my Cold Steel Trailhawk with custom personal modifications made to it by me. Cheers
Right now, my favorite bushcraft knife is a Bark River Aurora 2. It hasn't been to the woods yet. Hell, it has never cut anything except some potatoes for tonite's dinner. In my defense though, 2 hours before the potatoes I was picking it up from the mailbox. I agree that the Charge+ is the best Leatherman. I have mine on my belt every day. The Wave+ is almost as good.
That’s a very nice new knife you have there. I owned one a few years back but traded it to a friend , I need a new one I guess! Hopefully you can cut some spuds in the woods soon! Thanks for the comment 👍
My favorite bushcraft knife so far the one I use more then any other is my Mora eldris and my otzi replica from cold steel, I made myself a couple pretty knives for hunting and so on, but my Workhorse is my eldris. The rest I use my hatchet for most big tasks.
I mainly do hunting knives but I made a pair of kephart style bushcraft knives in January and I really liked em. Apparently so did someone else cause he bought one before I even made the sheath! I’ll admit I’ve got a lot to learn with bushcraft stuff but I took the other one out just to see how it worked and I was pretty happy with it. Couldn’t stop carving with it, it chews through wood like a beaver lol
Best hunting knife I’ve owned is my Randall made knives 3-6 with 0-1 tooled steel with India Sambar Stag handle. I prefer gnarly stag knife handles because when your hands get wet and bloody, skinning deer or wild hogs, you always have a solid grip with no slipping.
PKS Scorpion HD is my bushcraft knife of choice. Like you I’ve bought many and this one checks all the boxes for me. I will be buying one of those Anorak jackets. Thanks for the advice.
Hey Wade Nice vid !!, I also have the Frost River Jr, and yeah not the most comfortable...i did the unthinkable and mounted it to a frame lol. As far as bushcraft knives I still enjoy my Triple X custom model knife i had Derrick make, I also like my Casstrom # 10. You can't go wrong with Granfors axes especially the small forest axe it's the best all rounder in my opinion but i recently purchased the Council tool 24" pack axe for mostly winter or more extended trips. I would love to see a vid on both Knife and axe collection !! Thanks for sharing
Boy you are not wrong, it takes alot of time to get your gear lined out. I got alot of gear i regret buying. I would like to see your knife collection. Thank you for sharing your insight with us all. I totaly agree with the mulit tool. its a must have.
I'd say that depends on where your from and how you were raised. If you're a city boy that got into the outdoors later in life, I can see it taking time and figuring out what works for you. If you're a redneck that grew up in the woods, not so much.
New subscriber here. I’m a novice and like simple things. I like the Mora Garberg and the Mora bushcraft. Nothing fancy gets the job done. I’m not afraid to use it. Yes. I would like to see your knife collection.
Thanks very much for the support! Your knives are excellent and very good quality. I love the Garberg, but I gifted mine to a family member who was putting a kit together. Perhaps I need to get a new one?
I have several "favorites" I like the LT Wrights I have, the Buck Compadre with a Burlap handle, Mora's are great, Helle Viking the Beavercrafts are even great!
I know "true bushcrafters" turn their nose up at bowie knives, but my favourite knife is a John Nowill Sheffield bowie, it is a replacement for the one I had when I was thirteen years old. I would say my Roycroft style home made pack frame is another favourite, I can strap just about anything onto it. At the moment I have an old canvas and leather bicycle saddlebag strapped to it. As for a multitool, it has to be an SAK.
Got a few Grohmann/DH Russel knifes that i like. Most of my stuff comes from yard sales. Hultz Bruk axe as well. Good gloves are hard to find. Thank you for the video, Wade. Stay safe and stay warm
@@Woodswalker1965 Speaking of Grohmann knives, do you have any of them in your knife collection? (And, yes, I would like to see a video of your knife collection.) I'm especially interested in knowing more about Grohmann's #1 Original Design belt knife. In terms of blades, I already have a Gransfors Bruk Small Forest Axe and a Victorinox Fieldmaster. But I am looking to complement these with a mid-sized knife, to be used primarily for processing food and eating.
Knives. My most used bush knives are a Mora Companion HD and a Condor Cavelore. They're pretty much indestructible. I've been carrying a Mora Kansbol a lot lately though.
My favourite knife is the EKA Nordic h8. Its not a big knife, not very expensive although they sadly dont produce them anymore. Its a perfect knife, combined with my Gränsfors hatchet and folding saw theres no stopping me.
Hi As always thank, great video and very nice gear. I’m not a knife collector but my wife says I do fit the description 😊. I quite a few Moras, Jokers, Muela, Nieto Victorinox… I really like the Joker Canadiense and the Victorinox Master Mic Large. For some reason my favorite knife is the Mora Classic #3. I just love that knife. Easy to sharpen, light weight, comfortable handle, … The Small Forest axe is also my go to. Similarly, I wear wool all the time and I pile up the layers. My other wool vest is from the Army Surplus. Thanks for sharing it was a pleasure to watch. (A real treat). I would like to see your none collector’s collection of knives Take Care!
As for knives I have been through loads, but at the moment I just have a cheap condor bushcraft knife, the steel I really soft but it does what I want it to do. Between that and a Swiss army knife I'm good.
Great vid, discussion, and gear! 👍 Rob’s knives are exceptional tools from what I gather. I have yet to hear any gripes about’em. Can’t wait to own one and support his biz. Your comment about folks critiquing because your knife looks “new and unused” made me laugh. 😂 I’ve never understood why some feel that a knife needs to look old, worn, and tattered to be a well-used and well-loved tool.
My favorite knife is the Ursus Cub....if I bring an axe (generally a slightly-larger HB Scand. Forest Axe). If no axe, then I generally bring the larger Guardian 5.5.
GREAT VIDEO!!! MY FAVORITE KNIFE IS ONE THAT I MADE FROM A2, BUSHCRAFT. I ALSO MADE A SMALLER KNIFE OUT OF CPM 3V. MY HATCHET IS A HARDCORE HAMMER SURVIVALIST
@@Woodswalker1965 My Esee 4 goes everywhere with me. About to get either a 5 or 6, can’t make up my mind on which one I want to go with. Wish I could have the 5 with a 6” blade with the thickness in between the two and a higher grind. Eventually I want to have the Izula 2.875”, 4, 5 or 6, and a Junglas. Logic being the four of them will accomplish anything I need a knife to do.
@@GatlinMcDoubleStack hello friend, I own both and I can vouch for the esee 6. it does nearly anything better than the 5. i have done impossible things to it and it took any abuse. And it actually cuts, unlike the model 5. really great knives, but sadly quite expensive in europe
Very nice gear Wade. And yes I’ve seen all the gear you’ve shown being used on your videos. You definitely use them for their purpose. Good quality. They still look great. Excellent review video. And your long time subscribers would agree I believe. 👍👍👍👍
Great gear Wade. 👍 The Boreal Mountain Anorak is one of my favorites as well. I gotta thank you for that recommendation. I'd love to see your knife and axe collection! I have a lot of great knives. I'm a culinary guy (tons of culinary knives.) besides a bushcrafter, and camper. ( I really consider myself a motorcycle camper with some knife, hatchet, and saw skills) Mora, Baker, Buck, LT Wright, Bark River Knives, Origin, Broc Horseman #19, most of the ESEE lineup which are wonderful in their own way, I just picked up a trio of Roselli Scandinavian knives (to go with my Roselli axe with the long handle) which I really love, they are all capable, other makers and brands as well. My most cherished and capable knives are my Dave Beck WSK and Saranac combination. I was one of the last buyers that he took a custom order from. they work perfectly together. Axes & hatchets, I have quite a few also. From camp to woodworking to firewood and felling axes. I think I'm too old & injured to fell a decent sized tree any longer. Leatherman Surge is my favorite do it all multi tool. The gloves look awesome! I wish I'd have gone with the Royale Jr instead of the larger version. I may have to add the Jr sometime and just use the larger bag in my truck. My favorite knife steels would be AEB-L, and 3V, though I love the older steel as well.
Wow dude you have an awesome collection of gear congrats! I recently picked up a set of culinary knives from IKEA of all places! A chefs knife, a Santuko and a paring knife. They are VG10 steel and quite comfortable to use. They were recommended by several TH-camrs and I agree with them. Cheap and Cheerful! 😀 Any suggestions for culinary knives?
@@Woodswalker1965 Isn’t it wonderful where a person can find great buys? 👍 I like Messermeister a lot. They have varied levels of “quality” but even their basic stamped chef’s knives are wonderful. My most used when I cooked for a living was the 9” Meridian Elite Chef’s knife. I splurged a few years ago and bought the Tops Knives Dicer series knives in S35VN, chefs, paring, and bread knives. I love the Chef knife and Paring knife, the paring knife, Dicer 3, is almost sturdy enough to use as a bushcraft knife. The Victorinox knives are inexpensive and awesome as well. I bought their bushcraft knife last year when it came out, it’s a great knife as well. There really are a lot of good culinary knives out there. I’d like to try out some of the Porsche knives with the tiny handle in the kitchen as the pinch grip is the preferred grasp of a kitchen knife. They have the small unobtrusive handles. I’ve found that handles aren’t nearly as important in the kitchen as they are in the woods or a wood shop.
My favorite fix blade knife is the Mora Companion and as a folder the Victorinox Outrider. Both were under 20€, the Victorinox beeing a BOSCH promotional, usually sold for 57€. I missed the folding saw you used - I always take a saw over an axe, it's lighter, faster and much more safe to use.
Ya know I dont usually watch these kinda videos but I really enjoyed it, Im always out in the woods where I live in Arkansas. I bought a similar jacket to the one your wearing in 1997 in a thrift shop in Fairbanks 10 bucks Im still wearing it all the time here very good kit. I have a rat3 i used when deployed its small enough to carry all the time and I beat on it constantly. Im no bushcrafter though.
I’m glad you clicked on the video . There will be more similar to this and camping, outdoor cooking vids etc in the future. Hopefully you can catch those ones as well👍
My favorite knife/gear tends to be the gear that I have made or modify myself something about using something you put time and effort in making just increases the joy of using
Very cool, truly custom made gear! 😎
My favorite gear is what I have with me .
Agreed
That's the way I like to do it too.
YES THIS!
Where I live, licensed hunting of feral hogs is legal all year, so I eat a lot of bacon as well
That’s a really great set of equipment. You can be very self reliant with those items. Thank you👍🔪
This is the voice of experience. I'm fifty. Thank You for sharing and saving us time and foolishness. Best-
What brand of scotch eye auger do you recommend
Buy once cry once!!!! Beautiful collection of gear.
Thank you for the support and the kind comment!👊
Favorite knife is one my wife bought for me - she scored an absolute homerun with the Joker Bushcrafter. Handmade in Spain. Awesome steel. Holds and edge like I can’t believe. Sharpens up like a dream. Perfect balance and fits my hand like it was made for it. I retired my Randall #1 and carry the Joker instead now.
Those Joker knives look awesome. Real workhorses at a fantastic price point, especially being handmade! That knife and wife are keepers😂
@@Woodswalker1965 She’s kept me for 43 years - I don’t have any intentions of letting her go anywhere!!!
Jokers are great knives. I have the Canadiense. My wife also got it for me. 👍
Those are great experiences my friend, thanks for sharing and Ka-Bar-On buddy!!
Nowadays somebody finds that near a foot ball field ten cop cars show up and arrest an innocent guy
Thanks for watching my friend. I also have a Eberlestock Halftrack, great piece of kit!

Favorite Bushcraft knife is Condor Wayfinder.
Thanks for watching. I’ve owned a few Condor knives, quality blades and sheaths!👊🔪
Glad to see you still using the MK1.
I totally agree with you on the axe and leatherman Charge.
Take care Rob, still loving the MK1👍
@RobEvansWoodsman, what’s your preferred way for folks to contact you for MK1 knife order inquiries? I’d love to get some details and discuss placing an order.
A lot of great knives named in the comments. Educated audience. I like your choices and you can never go wrong buying quality. Thanks for the captivating video!
Thanks for reaching out my friend👊🔪
My favorite knife is a Grohmann classic! Easy to sharpen to a keen edge and very useful!
Grohman are very popular and have a great reputation. Good choice!👍
Love my Condor Bushlore. Very good knife and very affordable - or at least used to be. I also have a Gransfors Small Forest Axe - traded for it.
Yes I agree the Bushlore was affordable at one time. I paid $50 Canadian for mine many years ago and have since gifted it to a friend.
I paid $30.00 for mine I’ve used the heck out of it, it is an inexpensive very well made knife. Cheers.🤗
Excellent kit buddy 👍🔪
Hi Thomas !!!
I have one of those knockoff 110 with the same wobbly hinge as well. My real 110's hinge is as tight as the day I got it after 50 years of nearly daily use. It's one tough knife. My 110 was gifted to me by my wife on our first Christmas. On my 70th birthday in 2022 she got me an new engraved 110. Funny thing I used it once but it's a heirloom.
I have 112 Ranger with s30v steel that I'm currently using & knife is every bit as tough as a 110.
Thank You
-- Joe --
I have 2 110s and a 112.
Wow that’s a bargain!!! The Buck Ranger is a cool blade as well!
I’ve been wanting to try the Lars Falt knife for a while now.👍🔪
Thanks, its really nice and holds as edge, she's a beaut. @@Woodswalker1965
This is the kind of video I like that you’re not afraid to buy quality stuff that will work well and last in the test of time.
Thanks very much, I appreciate that!👍
Years ago in a surgical induced hi, I bought LT Wright Genesis ! Love the knife
Haha perfect excuse!
Joker Ember, it’s a real joy. I’ve got lots of knives, but it’s either that or my mora black!
Both of those knives are perfect 👍
My favorite knife is one I customized myself from a Pierre Santini butcher knife that has a Scandinavian grind, I turned it into kinda a seax style knife.
Sounds like a sweet blade!
I like oversized mitts with a glove inside in the cold, use the gloves without the mitts for work that needs dexterity! Mitts are warmer under cold conditions!
Excellent system!👍👌
My favorite bushcraft knife is a vintage Mora Damascus knife with a gorgeous pearlescent handle. I picked it up at an antique mall for $26, came with a leather sheath. It holds an edge very well, very thick and great for batoning, aggressive knurled spine. One of the accent pieces on the handle came loose, but I used apoxy resin to fix it.
Very interesting! That sounds like a rare one. Congrats!
Things that always come along on any trip:
BPS Knives C1
Leatherman Skeletool
Silky Gomboy
Axe either Kalthoff Small Carver or a Wetterling that is older than me.
(Just had to save up for a year and a half to get it.)
Blessings to you sir, from central Indiana.
That’s awesome, I would have probably done the same haha!👍🔪
Cruware is possibly better than magnacut. It is like the difference between s30vn and s35vn . Minimal. And yes any time is a good time .
Those leather gloves ! Made me DROOL 🤤 NICE 👍
Thanks for watching and for the comment, I appreciate it👍
Im from the Bush of Alaska and am allways strapped and with several knives and and Norrdic carry axe. Main carry skinner with a sturdy blade I can split firewood hammering it with a piece of hard limb.
Always prepared👍
Yes! Gransfors small forest ax. Perfect size, weight, handle diameter, profile, and metal.
You got that right!👍
My favourite Bushcraft knife is actually my Helle Delle Chef Knife.
Cool, I wasn’t aware Helle made chef knives!!
Great choices in gear my friend!
Hey the 1/2" towards the tip on the spine of the fieldcraft model works great in both the 154cm and the 1095. Ive tried both. Did not have to modify.🤷♂️ just sayin.
@bencorrigan8042 Nice! 👍
I love knives, i geek out about them, ive Forged some myself. I love any knife that holds an edge and doesn't break. If its from the dollar store but it doesnt break, ill use it for years.
It’s a tool first and foremost, if it works, use it! Thanks for watching my friend👍
My current favorite bushcraft knives are the AA Forge Puukko and the LTWK Genesis. Loved your video!
Great choices there my friend. I’ve been wanting a AA Forge for some time.
Great skill-set, good common sense advice.
Quality gear. Keep it going.
Thanks, will do. I appreciate the kind words!👍
For bushcraft/hikes/camping: I use either a PKS Mountaineer or a PKS Scorpion
Those are some great choices💪🔪

also a leatherman MT

thanks for the great video! I’m new to bushcraft and this info was very helpful
Thanks for stopping by my friend! Hope you’re enjoying your time in the woods💪🔪🌲
Thank You for a great video

Hey Joe thanks for sharing your kit! I was thinking that vintage 110 was a real treasure and please don’t lose it lol😂. It’s amazing how long good gear will last when it’s used but not abused. Take care my friend.
The 110 is a great old knife! I never had one except for a Pakistan copy with a wobbly blade. I keep it around for opening packages and such.
As someone who lives in a town, in an apartment, i dont get out in the woods as much as i'd like to. But, i do have some fixed blade knives. One i'd say is going to be my favored bushcraft knife is the ontario knife co old hickory 5.5" hunter. (The blade is 5.5")
Its solid, comfortable in hand, & neither pricy nor cheap.
I also have a morakniv i got from a thrift store. I think its mora's mid range companion series. I'm unsure though.
Those are my personal favored bushcraft knives.
Thank you for your time, & the great video!
Thanks for stopping by and sharing your choices!👍
My bushcraft knife is an old Hickory butcher knife. I have put a hole in it for a lanyard and I took it apart and spread JB Weld on the knife to keep it together. My camp hatchet is a Boy scout hatchet that I have had for over forty years.
Thanks for sharing, some great no nonsense , field tested gear there my friend!👍🔪
I have a white river fc pro the 3.5 inch. But i think for me i would like a 5 inch version in the future. I really appreciate its balance and of course its sharpened spine!!!

Absolutely!👍🔪

Buy the best and you will most likely be very happy with it for the rest of your life, rather than buying cheap over and over again. Not saying you can’t find good equipment at a cheap price, it does take a lot of trial and error.
Thanks for the video!👊
I appreciate you watching and for the comment my friend!👍
Great video! I aways carry three knives outdoors. Currently those are:
1. SAK Ranger 79 w/sheath
2. Master Hunter
3. Recon Scout or SRK
Great choices my friend, bombproof gear 👍🔪
My favorite bushcraft knife that I currently have is an AA Forge Badger that was gifted to me by a fellow member of BCUSA. I’ve recently purchased an LT Wright Kamrat that I haven’t used much yet. Thanks for the video, I’ve really enjoyed it.
Thanks for letting me know your favorite blades. They are beauties👍
Cheap Moras and Hultafors knives and love my GB Wildlife hatchet that I got for my birthday.
That is some fantastic gear my friend!
I have a Bark River , various Moras and others but my favourite is a cheap bushcraft model from Highlander outdoors here is the UK.
For a larger knife i have a UK MOD Para machete and also use either my small Hultafors axe or Gerber axe.
We all have a favorite, many times it’s not the fanciest or most expensive one we own.👍
Knife is a Condor Bushlore Black and yes the Gransfors small forest axe.
You have an awesome kit there brother, enjoy!!
I have Rob's Bushtool in RWL34, also a pretty and very sharp knife. I haven't used it yet outdoors, I'm saving it until my favorite knife retires which is the Fallkinven F1x in LamCos (rehandled with linen micarta).
I’m a fan of the F1X as well, great choices in knives🔪👌
Dont wait. Rob,s knives are something else
My fave knife is my Rob Evan’s FTP! He made it for me with pink liners! I’m proud to own it and feather sticks are a breeze! :)
I would love one of his FTPs in orange one day!👍🔪
Salute to you my friend, you are living life.
Thanks buddy, I appreciate you watching!👍
Buck 110 has been my combat, hunting, food prep, boy scout, Army Ranger, bush craft, wood carving and 30 year old, American made knife. Lifetime no BS warranty. I took the Buck factory tour and left my 30 year old 110 with a cool guy. When I picked it up an hour later it was newly reprofiled with a new belt sheath but, he didn't destroy the history of dents and patina either.
That’s amazing! I had a 110 but unfortunately I lost it. I need to get another!
I have a cutlery sharpening business, been sharpening knives professionally for 18years. I'v sharpened many 110's and by far it is the toughest folding knife ever produced. If you can own but one knife, make it a 110.

Great video for a Sunday morning, Wade. My 2 favorites and most used knives are a Skookum Bush Tool and the Sigmora made by Dan Koster for Sigma 3 Survival years ago. Both are in 3V steel, my favorite also.

Axe is fun, saw gets 90% of my work done, including packing wood out to supplement home heating.
I agree there, a saw does most of the work!

That’s a really good kit my friend. Congrats on those choices! 👍
Hello Wade, nice video, nice gear, enjoyable to watch. One of my bushcraft knife and not the most expensive is the Hultafors black blade knife you reviewed a few years ago. Works great and was quite affordable.
Still a great knife my friend!👍
I enjoy using my kabar knife in the woods. I actually use it. It's heavy and I can depend on it. I really like your axe. Plus, a multitool is a must for me.
I’ve had several votes for the Ka Bar, nice!👍
You have some great cold-weather clothing, sir!
Thanks for watching , much appreciated!👍
You forgot to mention the sleeves behind each pocket that can be used to hold things like folding saws.
If the IR Jr. seems heavy and uncomfortable, maybe a little too much space, check out the Frost River Cliff Jacobson Signature Pack. For some reason they only list it on their Day Packs page but IMO it’s a solid bushcraft pack. The thickness of the waxed cotton is 10 oz rather than the 18 of the IR Jr., but it still feels and performs solid yet only comes in at 2.5 lbs.
Good point, I mention the sleeve on my full review a few years back. Lots of choices for FR and the Jacobson pack is a nice one 👍
Cheers
Some good equipment there my friend!👊
Small but mighty!👍
I mainly do hunting knives but I made a pair of kephart style bushcraft knives in January and I really liked em. Apparently so did someone else cause he bought one before I even made the sheath!
I’ll admit I’ve got a lot to learn with bushcraft stuff but I took the other one out just to see how it worked and I was pretty happy with it. Couldn’t stop carving with it, it chews through wood like a beaver lol
The Kephart style is very popular for a reason!👍🔪
Best hunting knife I’ve owned is my Randall made knives 3-6 with 0-1 tooled steel with India Sambar Stag handle. I prefer gnarly stag knife handles because when your hands get wet and bloody, skinning deer or wild hogs, you always have a solid grip with no slipping.
Very cool blade👌
PKS Scorpion HD is my bushcraft knife of choice. Like you I’ve bought many and this one checks all the boxes for me. I will be buying one of those Anorak jackets. Thanks for the advice.
That Scorpion is a nice blade Sir! Hope you like the Anorak👊
Hey buddy , nice to hear from you, hope all is well! Nice bit of gear you have there and I’ll do my best to get a show and tell vid out👍
Boy you are not wrong, it takes alot of time to get your gear lined out. I got alot of gear i regret buying. I would like to see your knife collection. Thank you for sharing your insight with us all. I totaly agree with the mulit tool. its a must have.
Thanks for the comment my friend!🔪👊
A great Bushcraft knife option is the BeaverCraft Dune. Only 35 dollars, made in Ukraine, and is a great all around outdoor knife.
Sounds like a great option, thanks for sharing my friend!👊🔪
I have several "favorites" I like the LT Wrights I have, the Buck Compadre with a Burlap handle, Mora's are great, Helle Viking the Beavercrafts are even great!
There are great knives across the whole spectrum! Thanks for the comment👍
It’s not about the knife but the user. I’m sure you can do awesome things with your Bowie!!🔪 Thanks for the comment!
Got a few Grohmann/DH Russel knifes that i like. Most of my stuff comes from yard sales. Hultz Bruk axe as well. Good gloves are hard to find. Thank you for the video, Wade. Stay safe and stay warm
Thanks for watching brother, I love a good yard sale find👍
I like the looks of the Kansbol, reminds me of the Mora 2000. Great choices in knives my man👊
My favourite knife is the EKA Nordic h8.
Its not a big knife, not very expensive although they sadly dont produce them anymore.
Its a perfect knife, combined with my Gränsfors hatchet and folding saw theres no stopping me.
That’s a fantastic trio!👍
Hi
As always thank, great video and very nice gear. Easy to sharpen, light weight, comfortable handle, …
The Small Forest axe is also my go to. Similarly, I wear wool all the time and I pile up the layers. My other wool vest is from the Army Surplus. Thanks for sharing it was a pleasure to watch. (A real treat). I would like to see your none collector’s collection of knives Take Care!
Thanks for the comment and I must say for a non collector you have established a nice collection as well!😂😂
As for knives I have been through loads, but at the moment I just have a cheap condor bushcraft knife, the steel I really soft but it does what I want it to do. Between that and a Swiss army knife I'm good.
Condor makes some excellent knives, thanks for sharing my friend!
So far, my favorite BC knife is unquestionably, Victorinox Field Master
Very nice choice👊🔪
Great vid, discussion, and gear! 👍 Rob’s knives are exceptional tools from what I gather. I have yet to hear any gripes about’em. Can’t wait to own one and support his biz.
Your comment about folks critiquing because your knife looks “new and unused” made me laugh. 😂 I’ve never understood why some feel that a knife needs to look old, worn, and tattered to be a well-used and well-loved tool.
Thanks so much my friend. I don’t mind a bit of patina but overall I prefer a polished knife👍😁
Food looking delicious! Nice gloves!
Cheers!
Thanks for watching buddy👊
My favorite knife is the Ursus Cub....if I bring an axe (generally a slightly-larger HB Scand. Forest Axe). If no axe, then I generally bring the larger Guardian 5.5.
Adventure Sworn classic!!! Best knife EVER!!!
She’s a beauty!
GREAT VIDEO!!! MY FAVORITE KNIFE IS ONE THAT I MADE FROM A2, BUSHCRAFT. I ALSO MADE A SMALLER KNIFE OUT OF CPM 3V. MY HATCHET IS A HARDCORE HAMMER SURVIVALIST
Mad skills Brother! Well done👊🔪
My go to is Esee, can’t beat ‘em for the price and can 100% depend on them.
My favorite is the Esee 3 👍
@@hanserich18 Thanks for the info! I’ve been leaning more towards the 6 and now I’ve definitely made up my mind on which way to go. Appreciate it.
Most used knife is probably a LTWK Genesis but I love Keparts but I also equally use a lot of Woodlore knives too. AS or the GNS.
Nice collection my friend. I’m working on a video about 2 Kephart style knives now.🔪👊
Very nice gear Wade. And yes I’ve seen all the gear you’ve shown being used on your videos. You definitely use them for their purpose. Good quality. They still look great. Excellent review video. And your long time subscribers would agree I believe. 👍👍👍👍
Thanks Bernie, I appreciate you watching!👍
Great gear Wade. 👍
The Boreal Mountain Anorak is one of my favorites as well.
Any suggestions for culinary knives?
@@Woodswalker1965 Isn’t it wonderful where a person can find great buys? 👍
I like Messermeister a lot.
New sub here. Love the simple truth. Buy once cry once. The hard part is what works for you
Very true, sometimes you learn lessons the hard way though! Take care👍
Some great choices there my friend! I was using the Silky 270 saw.
