  • I ran out of forward momentum on this DIY video for making a mast-raising system for my West Wight Potter 19. Probably needs some narration in the second half, and could use shots of wedging the 2X4 gin pole against the mast base, but I hope the images tell enough of the story to be useful.

Loved the simplicity of your solution without the usual blathering of most videos that take 10 times longer. Great solution and great presentation.

That is simple and elegant. For the first time this spring I couldn't bull my mast up. Thank you for sharing.

This is very clever and a significant improvement over the system provided with the sailboat. I never felt safe raising and lowering the mast by myself.

Important to note the addition of the optional baby stays that make the single-handed mast raising possible by adding the lateral stability you need.

The 2" X 4" wood support of the furling system is important and well-done.

dont forget to look at the lower shrouds he has connected with some slack so when the mast gets to the height where it may wobble, the shrouds are tight enough to stop that.

I just cut a 2" PVC pipe in half at about 3 feet long sanded the edges and rounded the ends and lashed it to the mast end to support the roller furler. Much lighter and easier.

Hello, dunnotube. I'm attempting to adapt your amazing system to my Com-Pac 16. I would love to see more about how you attach the gin pole to the mast, as well as how you get it set into place vertically, prior to the actual raising. I'm partially disabled and have trouble scrambling around on the top of the cabin. Any additional video, photos, or advice would be much appreciated! Thanks!

This is amazing! I think I'm going to buy this boat just to match the 2x4! 🤣

I always rise the mast (Columbia 23) by my self. Is fastest, but need more energy, I think es more comfy in this video way.

How did you lower the mast? The ratchet only controls weight in one direction i.e., raising not lowering (under control). Thanks!!
