- So, that new girl I keep talking about?
She really, really, REALLY hates Kris.
And you know what's weird? Literally ONLY Kris seems oblivious to this. Or, no. Are they oblivious? They're literally getting bullied! Do they just... not care? Then again, who knows what Kris is thinking. I just don't get why they don't tell their mom.
OR, BETTER, switch seats with me, like I keep saying lol. I guess they just don't want to be at the front of the class? But... She doesn't EVER bully me, EVEN when there'd be a HUGE opportunity to, so... Come on, switch seats, everyone would be safer that way X)
Like, you're not going to believe what happened today. lol
After the bell rang, as usual, everyone rushed to see who could get out of class first. I stayed behind a bit to help Alphys put away some books (and look for some mysteriously missing supplies X) ). Meanwhile, Kris was still asleep, face-down on a totally blank notebook page, and for some reason, Susie... hadn't left either. She was just sitting there... staring at Kris's head. Sniffing it...??? (Wonder if she'd like scented candles? X) )
Eventually I started to leave too (I even almost said bye this time), but I was a bit worried about Kris, so I stayed outside the classroom to... umm, watch? X) I had to stay totally out of sight, Holiday family ninja style, since Susie didn't seem like she was going to do anything until she made sure I was gone.
After a while, Susie got up, knocking her chair over. She jumped into Ms. Alphys's seat and put her shoes up on the desk, getting dirt everywhere. (I just know I'm going to have to clean that. X) )
She grabbed the apple Berdly had given Alphys a few days ago (you know, one of the ones she has literally never eaten X) ), held it up, and started talking.
"Hey, idiot."
Kris didn't look up.
"HEY IDIOT!"
Kris still didn't look up!
"KRIS!"
Kris looked up. Susie rolled her eyes and showed all of her horrible and very cool teeth.
"Nice shampoo. Apple flavor, right? Better be careful about wearing that around me."
Then she BIT THE WHOLE APPLE IN HALF! Including the core. She even ate the seeds, which, um, contain arsenic if you didn't know. X) Don't eat those Susie... anyway, Kris didn't react, so she continued.
"Keep smelling like apples... you might end up like this."
Kris didn't react.
"Bitten..." she pointed to the apple. "In HALF."
There was like, the MOST awkward silence... and then...
Snickering.
But it wasn't Susie...
No, it was Kris, just barely stifling some laugh.
Did they think that was some kind of weird joke...? X)
WHATEVER it was, Susie must have thought she was getting made fun of, because she immediately just LAUNCHED the apple right at kris.
But, Kris, with their gamer reaction speed X) Held up their notebook like a shield and blocked it diagonally, bouncing it into the air...
And actually CAUGHT the apple.
...
Then took a bite out of it.
Gosh, though, did that make Susie mad.
"You little..."
She ran over and grabbed Kris by the hair, staring into their face. REALLY close. I froze. I knew that if I didn't do anything, Kris would get hurt, or worse, but something inside me just... froze! I just stood there, holding my breath. And Susie kept talking.
"One day, your mom's gonna get sick of you, you little freak. And as soon as that happens..."
Susie laughed. I felt genuinely sick.
"Someone might make you disappear. And she'll finally realize how happy she was without you."
But after all that,
Kris didn't say anything at all.
Susie EXPLODED.
"SAY SOMETHING, YOU IDIOT!!!"
It felt like her voice echoed around the room forever.
Then, when it finally went quiet,
Kris's mouth looked like it moved.
To be honest, moved so slightly, I couldn't even tell if they said something, or what, but whatever it was, Susie's attitude... suddenly completely changed.
She let go of Kris, backing off quickly, then left the room in such a hurry, she easily would have won today's "leaving first" race.
I REALLY wish I could have seen her reaction, but I was so scared she would see me that I literally just jumped into my locker X)
In the end all I could see through the little slats was her shape from behind, going towards the entrance of the school with her head held low.
Finally, I heard the entrance door close.
I sighed, and suddenly all that frozen feeling that had built up in my chest flew out of my body all at once. "Holy cheese and crackers!" I said to myself. I almost started laughing from relief.
Then suddenly, my locker's door flung open.
Kris was standing there.
I started to stutter hello, and they just slowly, slowly shut the door on me and left.
WELL...
THAT JUST HAPPENED. LOL X)
I ordered apple shampoo, maybe if I wear it too she won't bother Kris as much X))))))))))
I love the stark contrast between Kris's movements and everyone else. Everyone walks naturally but Kris just walks robotically... like a video game character.

Yep yep, I actually recorded myself playing as Kris for that just to get the movements right, objects like books or the noelle cutscene are still animated after that point, though

What I really like about this is is doesnt depict the event as just some minor tomfoolery, but instead well encapsulates the brutality Susie used to subject Kris to, that I think the fandom tends to just gloss over most of the time.
Also this isnt super over the top like most fan stuff is, which I think is good.

This is not a different side of her, cause she has grown to be a good person, I don’t know why you don’t believe bad people can change like that, and it clouds your judgement on what is canon and not, how Susie is portrayed by the fandom (which is mostly Post-Chapter 1 Susie tbh) is quite accurate, it’s not another Sans situation where it’s a completely different character, fandom portrayal of Susie is accurate, she isn’t an asshole anymore (still bit loud mouthed but not to the extent of the video, which is PRE-CHAPTER 1), and you need to overcome you bias of what a character shift actually is and accept what is canon.
i love how the other classmates talk to each other with the ! effect. little details like that make it so much more accurate to the game.
Thank you! I think that might've been the longest segment to make since there were a lot of moving parts for that, had to consider who moved when and how at the right time, glad it panned out ok!
My headcannon is still that Kris said something like “I think you are talking about yourself” or “just like what happened to you?” That would make a lot of sense considering Susie refuses to mention or call her parents.

Holy crap this is so well done! Wasn't expecting such a long and full sprite animation from ya man! It reflects the Sweepstakes blog perfectly, love the details of Noelle appearing at the door, and Susie smiling once Noelle leaves. Also like the creative liberties with Alphys being late for a Mew Mew marathon, and Susie dragging a desk over since there's no teacher's chair. Plus that Noelle sprite when Kris finds her is adorable. Great job!

What I notice about Kris is that they act less like how a teenager would react here and more like how a character being played by a *player in an RPG* might react. Kris might be absolutely terrified by Susie's behaviour, but the person controlling Kris through their soul can't feel the same level of peril and can't feel the physical pain at all. So to them it's just a chance to roleplay being a badass who stands up to a bully. It's courage but it's artificial courage, assuming my guess is anywhere near the actual mark.
Heyo Napoleon! You are sorta on the mark, but it's actually got to do with Kris themselves, specifically their strange behaviour as a "weird kid" which was mentioned in passing by some NPCs during the game, I tried to demonstrate that attitude by making them emote more than they usually would, eg, laughing at Susie's insult, eating the apple unprompted or seemingly talking to Susie at the very end. That being said though, I really adore your interpertation of this, it's really unique with solid points and I don't think anyone's picked it apart like that before!
This whole story was actually lifted from a secret page in Toby's "Spamton Sweepstakes" event, I took a few liberties here 'n there while translating it visually so it might not be completely accurate (Though I left the original story in the description for that kind of comparison, the base story being from Noelle's POV)
@@JQR. It's just an idea that struck me as I watched. I recognised the scene from the Sweepstakes (superbly well constructed by the way). What I remembered was the cage that Kris keeps the Soul in; how it's battered and it looks like they've been dealing with the Soul this way for a while now. So if Kris's struggles with the Soul predate our control of them in-game...
...who's been controlling them up to that point? And that's when I joined the (potential) dots that the behaviour Noelle observes really doesn't fit a normal teenager, but they *absolutely* fit the behaviour of someone controlling an RPG protagonist.

It gives credence to this somewhat, kinda giving the impression that they just changed personalities instantly, perhaps showing that they were fighting for control for much longer than it seems, at least to me, so yeah i can 100% agree with this actually. Well done honestly, you've given me a new perspective on the ever-expanding connection between the pair!

I love these sweepstakes ones you're doing so much! reading through this story on the website felt shocking to hear how bad Kris's bullying was, but actually seeing it like this, two characters who, after chapter 1 and 2 we know have such a strong friendship, and knowing this interaction between them before the game is canon, is so heartbreaking. the pixel animations look gorgeous as per usual, and it seems you're even improving with the less stuttering and improved text boxes. great work :D
Hey thanks! I'm glad I was able to capture the original feeling for these, I still wanted it to feel like a cutscene that could maybe happen in game.
These were also kinda tests to help my sprite animations look more alike to the game so future concepts and interpretations can look more authentic, so I'm glad you noticed improvements!
in a sorta darker tone.. I think its possible that Kris was laughing because Susie amuses him. Everyone else seems to be afraid of him.. but here is this Pink dinosaur woman threatening to bite his face off... and its just so ridiculously funny to him. Shes not scared of him at all.. and he LOVES IT.

As terrible as Susie was in this my true anger is way more geared with Noelle. She let Kris get bullied brutally by Susie and did nothing about it beside post about it on her blog. At this point in time Kris and Susie hadn’t been in the dark world and hadn’t developed a bond yet, and Noelle didn’t know about their friendship yet. Noelle just let her past childhood friend get slammed over and over again and instead thinks about how if she wears apple shampoo Susie will pay more attention to her?
It’s real gross once you start thinking about it, I don’t doubt that Noelle is normally a nice person but this is so nasty and enabling. Kris absolutely knew that Noelle was watching and did nothing to help them(Kris heard her in the locker and probably saw her sillohuette in the glass from their desk). Yet Noelle is confused as to why Kris is so cold to her?

This is incredible. The original writing in the first section, the animation, the little details like Noelle peeking through the door, everything is so good!! I found myself having to halt what I was doing because of how mesmerizing the animation was to me. Awesome indeed, pure animation this time ;). Although… I did miss the day this video was “leaked” lol, kinda angy cuz I checked a lot and I missed it lol (had to wait for the rest in Christmas heh). It’s all cool tho. Lots of cool details for “just” being an adaptation of the story… you get the style and atmosphere down perfectly. People need dudes like you that can visualize a text story so clearly, and yet still have new things that make it unique from the original. Like for example, the Kris “dialogue” and the hidden eyes is ingenious.
I thought that the Ch. 1 Susie-Kris interaction was horrible already… didn’t expect Susie to be so keen on “removing” Kris so badly, that’s not just cruel, but canon cruel. Twice Susie mentions Toriel while terrorizing/thinking of killing Kris… She must like Toriel a lot if it was both her drive to attack Kris and to not maim Kris permanently. Susie’s performance here is great! Kris is good too… that “giggle” is hella strange. Noelle actually exceeds expectations lol, she has quite an expressive silhouette.
Yupp! This was sorta me just testing the waters with animating everything completely, also sorry 'bout the "leak" too, I accidentally set the video to "public" when uploading dis which kinda threw a bunch of people off when I privated again (eh, shoulda just left it on public honestly :/)
But ye, I tried my best to capture the whole interaction they had in the story to adapt it to the more gameplay looking videos posted (even played sum ch 1 to remind myself how Susie acted), my whole idea with Kris was to kinda "garble" and "distort" anything they say, with how their laugh sounds weird and when they spoke to Susie there was nothing but a empty txt box, I mainly took this from how Kris sometimes says stuff to the party that players can't hear (Best example that comes to mind is their answer on how they feel after the Spamton fight)
Also glad to know that I was able to convey Noelle's emotions! It was a bit hard to do since the door window was small meaning less sprite space for her

The Spamton Ex thing is coming along nicely, maybe taking a bit longer than expected cause he's going to move a tad bit during some attacks which has been hard to animate frame-by-frame... since spamton on strings already has weird movement, the attacks are pretty unique I think, as well as... another factor which will hopefully add something to the battle, so I think it'll pay off in the end!

This is so well animated ! It could be canon ! Well I know the scene is, but I mean the way it's animated looks a lot like what you could find in the game.
The scene where Susie talks about how Toriel will want to get rid of Kris one day and really how happy that'll make her, and then starts crying clearly shows that this is how she thinks her parents see her.
Maybe her mother left her long ago, and she's left with abusive dad, and she's jealous of Kris and their nice mother so she's taking her anger out on Kris.
But she probably also envy them, when she almost bites Kris' face off and end up saying "Nah. Kris, you've got a good mother. It would be a shame to make her bury her child."
She sees how lucky Kris is to have a good mother, and she's nice enough to not want others going through the same kind of things she's going through.
She could very well have a "If I have to suffer, then why shouldn't the rest of the world suffer too ?" mindset, but she doesn't, so she's more mature than she seems.
Of course she's not perfect since she takes her anger out on others, probably the same way her father does with her. It's something common with bullies, where they imitate the only behavior they know from their parents.
Susie's situation seems really bad, but her mean attitude and bullying keeps other away from her, and she can't get the help that she needs, but Kris is a step in the right direction.
I hope her problems with her family will be adressed in the game, and that she'll end up living the happy life she, and everyone for that matters, deserves.

Very incredible animation of deltarune, I liked the cool details you put into the animation, especially Noelle hiding behind the door, and the most interesting part in my opinion is when kris had said "something" to Susie, and then the screen turned black and a text box appeared, indicating kris's speech, although since he never talks (or the player in that matter never gets to see/hear him say anything.) all of the dialogue was just blank, the player kept pressing enter (you can tell by the grey flashes on the box ofc.) no dialogue sounds either, kris must have said something, but we never knew exactly what, only thing we witnessed was a pair of eyes.
Again, very amazing animation, that part was unsettling but cool at the same time

After watching the part where the blinking text box appears a few more times, I suddenly caught the sight of a pair of eyes staring into me that I didn't notice at first.
I thought I was seeing things, and it freaked me out the first time around, but now I see it was, in fact, an actual thing in the video. It's one of those "you blink you miss it" sort of things, and it's so subtle at first yet so noticeable after the first time you "think" you saw them.
This so freaking cool! The animations looked great. The shaking letters were a cool effect as well.
This was great! You really nailed the feel of Noelle's transcript of the event!
Though, I've gotta say, some of the sprites for Susie look a bit wonky, namely the ones where she bites the apple in half, it's basically just a mess of yellow, black and purple where here face should be. So, that could have used a bit of polishing before the video being pushed out..
But other than that, This was really cool!

the way kris' text box was recreated by just a flashing box and nothing else is creepy... really tells you how interesting kris really is
also the eyes threw me off terribly... do they have some kind of symbolism?
The text box being there was just my way of interpreting what Kris said to Susie in game form, the flashing was just something I did on a whim but could be interpreted as them talking I guess and the eyes were meant to be theirs, looking back at Susie!

Noelle liking Susie even in her blog here makes me wonder about the snowgrave route, maybe its kris feeling the pent up hurt from their childhood kinda friend not helping them, but romanticizing the bullying they went through from Susie. How interesting, this is very well made

This is REALLY well done. I was gonna make something similar to this using the game engine itself since I'm not that great of an animator/artist, but you've done WAY better than I ever could. Definitely earned a sub.
Thanks dude! I actually initially tried to find a way to mod this scene in as well with the mod tool but I'm not as good at modding as some other people, haha, besides I wanted to practice drawin', so yeah animated!
Though at 6:39 onwards when Kris gets up, it transitions into gameplay with me controlling Kris, all objects like the books and the noelle cutscene are still animated so it's a bit of a blend there!
