You just answered a question I've literally spent the last 10 hours trying to work out :) I taught myself to model by just picking up the tools and going for it so I missed out on all the basic do's and don'ts. I honestly wondered if there was a reason to make all edges loop if they have no real apparent effect on the geo.

Glad to have helped you with this super old vid haha!
Rule of thumb(s) for edge loops and whether or not to try and remove them:
      1. Does it help the silhouette? (if you turn the model does it help keep it looking interesting or is it just flat and doesn't help)
      2. Does it help the model deform properly (if needed for animation etc.)

how would ye approach this differently for organic models?

Same approach except you really have to watch how you're doing it if you're working on something that will be rigged/animated for example. You want to make sure that you don't get unnecessary deformations.

thanks! does that mean keeping these types of techniques away from deformation areas (animation)? Pushing these transitions away from say an elbow to a forearm?

+callmedeno exactly. it's better to put things like that in places that won't be seen as much.
