      How is a mascot name intended to be derogatory or demeaning? I wast aware that a school or a professional team would name their mascot to reflect themselves in a self deprecating or negative fashion. Name just 1 non Native American named professional team that is meant to be self deprecating?? Please! This is nonsense.

      Cindy, you really need to educate yourself. Jim Thorpe never played for the Washington Redskins. He retired from the NFL in 1928, at 41 y-o. The name Redskins would first be used by the Boston team on 1933, before eventually moving to Washington DC in 1937. So, the Redskins team didn't even exist when Thorpe was playing pro football.

    I attended a high school that Native American Indians helped build and it has a large auditorium with huge wooden ceiling beams that have hand carved and painted designs done by these same Indians. The school teams are the Indians and the mascot is an Indian. There was a movement to change these, but descendants of those Native American Indians blocked and said leave it alone, it was an honor to their ancestors to be portrayed as strong and educated people.

    • @kenanosmanagic
      @kenanosmanagic 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's really cool! In that sense, I think that works wonderfully :)
      However, in the sense of the Cleveland Indians, there is respect there. The Chief Wahoo logo is a caricature and very disrespectful, not empowering like your highschool's mascot. Another subject of disrespect is the costume that fans adorn to show their devotion to the team. People will literally go into blackface so they can "support their team" which I find ridiculous.

    First of all, why would we want a world where we can't use symbols and elements of each other's cultures? Should I as an American white be upset if a korean or native american family celebrates Thanksgiving or should I as a Scandinavian be upset if they'd name their sportsteam The Vikings? Do we want a fractured society where we are assigned different rights based on ethnicity? I don't.
    He claims that the logos spread information because they're using popular easily identifiable imagery which doesn't apply for all indians. Who said these are symbols that are meant to represent all indians? Here they are representing sports teams, not the entire native american collection of nations. It should be obvious why an illustrator would use popular and widely known and easily identifiable elements of Indian culture to make the viewer understand what he or she (OR "THEY"?) are looking it.
    Lastly, intent and context DOES matter.

      I am an enrolled tribal member. No one in my community condones the use of "Redskin" as a team name. The fact that you are fine with a racial slur used as a team name shows how far we still have to go. Native Americans have been pleading with the U.S. government to honor their treaties and keep their promises for more than a century. The reason this still hasn't happened is because they, along with most white Americans, still do not view us as human beings worthy of respect. When obese middle-aged white men stop wearing our sacred religious clothes to their sports game and drunkenly yell obscenities then maybe, just maybe we will begin to be viewed with a shred of dignity. The fact that these grown adults are so upset about their sports team changing their name is evidence of their fragile white victimhood. If they react this strongly to a sports team name change, just imagine what they would do if they had to live even a single week on a Native American reservation. They wouldn't be able to handle it.

      @@russ7009 Yeah, and the word *yankee* is a derogatory word created by Europeans to be condescending and demeaning towards Americans, but, the Americans turned that word into something more creative and positive and even made a baseball team called the New York Yankees. Even so called "bad words" can be changed. I think that's what societies needs to do to get out of this over sensitivity.

    • @Hollenthon2468
      @Hollenthon2468 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're 100% right. Professional sports teams are not trying to be disrespectful or racist with their team names. Every team is based on a warrior of some kind (Patriots, Redskins, Chiefs, Buccaneers, etc), or an occupation of some kind (49ers, Steelers, Cowboys, Chargers, etc) or an animal of some kind (Raven, Lion, Bengal, Ram, etc). All these teams have mascot that usually look fun, goofy, silly, etc. But that's what mascots are suppose to be, so they can be entertaining and friendly looking. It really is a shame that society has gotten so sensitive to the point where everything can be cried about and taken down.

      With that said, you don't seem to correctly grasp the above comment - it was a nightmare for the Native American people perhaps as it's still a nightmare centuries onwards as nothing has changed for them .The culture and people has not been able to as yet, pull itself out of debilitating poverty. As individuals perhaps, but as a nation-not even close. One can claim a blood quantum connection to native Americans but unless you've been able to trace your lineage, its unlikely that you'll feel connected to the struggles of these generations of systematic poverty, disenfranchisement and the spiritual disintegration of a peoples. In my culture, blood percentage means snot-all. Knowledge of your people, of your roots and awareness/acceptance of the continued moderm struggles that are compounded by race & historical subjugation of Native Americans as a whole... all are necessary to claim your "nativeness". it's not a matter of different degrees of victimhood - who had it worse off /or all had it worse off so shuddup etc- it's about acknowledging that shizz happened, like really accept it, have a government willing to redress it and fix stuff, and then letting all that pain go and moving on as a united Nation. This takes knowledge and time, perhaps later you may feel more sympathy towards that side of you rather than disparaging Native American struggles. ☺

    Invisible. That's the problem. Mascots are used to represent toughness, skill in battle, bravery. Yet when it comes to " their country" Indigenous people are invisible. Inclusion as a people is a pipe dream. Poverty, lack of opportunities and direction are at the forefront. We've wronged them in so many horrific ways then to extoll their virtues through a mascot is, in my mind, unacceptable. They are an ongoing people not stuck in the times of Hiawatha. They've fought along side of us in every war we've ever had and died as we have died. Where's the respect.This white dude can't even pronounce Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikira. @Brandon Hopkins Well, it's not just the Redskins team that "stereotypes", also the Cowboys, Patriots, 49ers, Steelers, etc. Have you seen their mascots? Yeah, with their big heads and goofy appearance. So racist, right? Oh, and let's not forget the animal name teams; I don't recall real Seahawks actually are blue and green color. Or Ravens are purple and black. What about their facial expressions? They always look mean. That's demeaning to wildlife.
      So you see, anyone can whine and cry about how a mascot "stereotypes". People need to stop being so sensitive. One thing is, that none of these teams are trying to offend anyone. The names and mascots they chose for the teams are names and images they are proud of. People need to realize that and stop acting like they are racist teams.

      @@johngalt8279 The word redskin did not originate as a derogatory word. It was a neutral word that most likely referred to Native warriors by the red war paint they used on their bodies. Heck, even the word Oklahoma means "red people" in Choctaw. It was named by a Chocktaw chief. So no, these words did not originate as racist or offensive. It wasn't until the mid 1900's when some Natives started complaining about it because they did not want any non-Natives to use Native American words, symbols or imagery in their sports teams. There are Natives that are open minded to other cultures adopting their traditions and there are Natives that are very sensitive to others using their traditions. So that is what the problem is.

    Some schools try to honor our people. But different mascots are named for racial epithets. What if some of these teams named their teams for black tribes from Africa, Jewish tribes of Israel, oe any other ethnicity. The characters and team slogans get used by children to bully others and I should know. I had 12 years of it, growing up. The words were usually followed by violence. When I had cancer, I lost so much weight and muscle definition that over 30 scars appeared on my legs. After the doctor did a biopsy on one, it turned out to be scar tissue. He asked, "Were you hit or kicked a lot as a kid?" I said yes, I was. I will have these scars on my legs for the rest of my life; it was deemed too dangerous to put me under to remove them. Encourage teams to whom utilize Native American logos/names to provide education on their local tribes etc. To just go at it broadly and ask all teams to stop using Indian as a name or Indian logos for a team is very short minded. Maybe jumping in that millennial wagon with hopes of getting some quick money or fam? Teams use names/logos/mascots that are brave, strong, tough, resilient. If one has that much offended feelings by a team using Indian logos etc. they need to look within and seek therapy. Find your harmony, use your passion and energy for something productive for the native culture not erase it from Current/future history.

      I likewise agree with you friend. The past transgressions towards Native American tribes across the nation, what happened in the past and issues that face some native tribes now is important. Awareness, building partnerships I believe would serve the Native American peoples better. To me these logos as a non-native I've always looked at in awe and reverence. To me I feel it be disrespectful to get rid of these logos because it feels like people are erasing the one image we have of Native Americans from the public consciousness - Stoic, Noble, Brave, Resilient. So many plights as I mentioned before go unnoticed that happen to Native Tribes in certain areas of the country - They cannot be ignored or erased as simply as a logo. I'd rather fix those issues than anything else.

    My college (El Camino in Southern California) has a Native American Warrior as the mascot. I think it's pretty cool. And I don't think it's equivalent to "Jew" at all. Though, on that note, if there was a team called "The Jews" or something like that, I'd probably just be more amused (as someone who is somewhat of a Jew).
