Gogol was imitated by many authors. Ryonusuke Akutagawa wrote a short story called the Nose. Also Gogol's. Gogol was a genius but he remains in the shadow of the big guys like Dostoevsky and Tolstoy.

Finally read Lu Xun's Dairy of a Mad Man today. I can see the influence of Gogol, but Xun did on his own a convincing job of portraying a paranoid mind. The narrator slips through different versions of reality seamlessly.
The political aspect is clear with the speech the narrator gives his brother near the end.

I came across the story late at night on one of the old time radio shows.

Pearl S. Buck wrote about cannibalism too in her novel "the good earth". . it was a Chinese family in ancient China story written by an American naturalist. .

The old time radio had rather an unpleasant name but rather sophisticated stories. The name was Black Mass.

For those who are wondering cannibalism is/was a rather common metaphor in ancient China.
