  • This is one way to play this iconic drum part, or at least come pretty close IMO. Below is a link to the drum tab that I used for this video lesson:
    drive.google.com/file/d/1Klus...
    IMPORTANT CORRECTION: Please see the pinned comment for a correction: hertas are counted as groups of 3 eighth notes, not as eighth note triplets.
    Thanks for watching and rock on, groovy peeps! 🤘🤘

    Sorry...love it but hertas are not triplets. The transcription even shows they're not triplets in the opening. Not sure why everyone thinks two 16ths and an 8th, etc are triplets!

    Nice playing and this video definitely adds value in helping to understand such a complex set of patterns - thanks. Just for info for anyone wanting to understand the terminology for some of these patterns.... The double bass shuffle is actually the 1st and 3rd partials of each triplet (not second and third)- so that element is actually a traditional double bass shuffle. The 'bounce' section on the ride cymbal plays the first two triplet partials on the odd beats of each bar followed by the first triplet partial on the even beats of each bar. The Hertas are two 16th notes followed by 2 eighth notes (so they cover one and a half quarter note pulses).

    so refreshing to see someone teach this with the correct sounds!!
    things i noticed when listening to the isolated tracks:
    i have the guitar hero rips of this song, with the toms and kicks separated so you can really hear what’s going on. in section 3 you mention the right hand coming over to the rack tom for an accent (you said sometimes you can hear it and sometimes not). this confused me as well, but with the iso tracks you can hear that it’s actually his right hand hitting a real floor tom for the one note. you can tell because it’s panned left instead of the more right of the (rototom) rack tom.
    the second thing in section 3 is that you are switching between the rack and simmons tom with your left to play the triplet, when there is no triplet. the triplet “sound” comes from the confusion between the kick and toms sounding almost identical. its an extra note that almost everyone who covers it plays, but its really obvious in the tom isolated track that almost no one seems to have. the left hand never leaves the rack tom, and the right plays a similar pattern to the ride once the song kicks in. dat, dat, da-da, dat, dat, da-da… etc.
    great lesson. im trying to make a video on this to really explain what’s going on, also addressing some of the theories you mention. thanks!

      Tanner, thanks so much for this detailed message. This is the kind of stuff I really enjoy talking about! I have the same guitar hero isolated tracks, but once I found the sheet music I never went back in and compared it to the iso tracks, lol. 😃 Thank you for helping decode that mysterious "extra accent"... I will have to open up the mogg file and check it out as you did!
      Regarding the triplets in between the rack tom accents... yes, I totally understand what you are saying. It did occur to me about midway through learning this that he could be playing the same pattern on the low tom that he plays later on the ride, with the kick drum filling in the gap. I also watched a YT video where someone played it that way... it really makes sense. But, in the interest of staying true to the drum tab, and because I'd already mostly learned it, I kept with the triplets, lol!
      I really appreciate you checking this out & I really, really appreciate your detailed comments and feedback about this. Great comments, very interesting stuff!👍👍💛

      @MikeConwayDrums  ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, Tanner - any insight you can provide for what exactly is going on in section 2 would be appreciated! The drum tab I'm playing sounds very close, but I would swear there are some hertas and possibly other things happening there. Any thoughts or more great decoding work from the isolated tracks would be awesome!! 😃😃

      @@MikeConwayDrums i have recently come across a video of Mike Mangini of Dream Theater saying that eddie vh told him in the 90s that both Alex and Eddie were playing on the intro… I’m currently looking into this possibility; it could be the explanation to the relatively “random”-ness of section 1-into section 2. eddie was an inexperienced drummer..
      that would probably mean: eddie plays the simmons tom from section 1 and 2, with alex adding the bass drums in 2. then eddie drops out for section 3 which is as i explained earlier.
      i personally believe the entire song was done in one take, including the intro. whether it was one or two van halen brothers, i dont know 😅

    You are the first one besides Alex himself that has ever gotten the ride cymbal accents correctly in the shuffle. Fantastic job my friend, really fantastic! I don't know why almost every drummer, who posts a hot for teacher video never gets the accents on the ride cymbal right?

    • @MikeConwayDrums
      @MikeConwayDrums  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey, thanks a lot for noticing that & commenting! I think it's natural for most drummers to land a bass drum beat on the second bounce of a swung ride beat -- it's a very common thing. Alex sort of inverted it and the bass drum lands on the first bounce of the ride beat & rests on the second bounce, so most drummers probably don't really pick up on that since it's pretty unorthodox. Thanks a ton for your great comments Glenn!🙏🙏

    You have a great gift for teaching and this was a great lesson. This is one of the best breakdowns of this song I've seen on youtube. A very unusual drum track. Seems every time I listen to it, I pick out new things or something seems to sound different. The intro is so dense sounding and has such a sporadic or irregular feel to it, it sounds as if some of the hits are totally unplanned. It makes me wonder exactly how Alex came up with it and how it was recorded in the studio. I have never seen him play the intro live, which makes me wonder.

    • @MikeConwayDrums
      @MikeConwayDrums  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @peacefulbliss1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikeConwayDrums You're welcome. Yes, the intro and the fills through out the song are very unusual sounding to me. I worked on this myself and eventually would like to upload a video of some of my ideas on it. I use a single pedal and sort of did my own thing with it. Would make for a great video if Alex himself discussed the creation of this song. The shuffle pattern is pretty straightforward, I heard the idea may have come from "Space Boogie" by Jeff Beck.
