Of course, a secular society absolutely _can_ do this, but the motivation _to_ do this seems much less pressing without the idea of eternal rewards and eternal damnation. These extreme motivations cause people to cough up tithes to keep the "club" going. Like many others in the growing number of "nones," I do not believe in an immortal soul. So, how can we create secular social outlets without extreme rewards and threats? No one seems particularly interested in doing so, at least where I live. Perhaps it's because my home is infested with churches? Or maybe it's because the promise of huge rewards and extreme threats is far more motivating? It's also toxic as hell (literally), but you get my point, yes? Unfortunately, in my area, people are far too caught up in their church clubs to form secular clubs. Their walls are already in place and their defensiveness is legendary and ever-present. We lose nothing by aggressively stating our case, because they have no intention of listening in the first place.

Not a fan of Hitchens. He passes judgement in exactly the same way as the Christians he criticizes do. He take literally - not figuratively, metaphorically, etc. - everything the so-called Christians he criticizes also do. He does not address any other metaphysical/religious world-wide traditions outside of the Abrahamic ones. That is, he does not account for the universal existence of metaphysical belief systems or that they evidently have been with us humans since we split off from other hominids/primates. There is no evidence, for instance, that our current primate cousins live in fear every minute of their lives, that gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans, etc. spend their lives hiding in case some predator comes along. Archaeological evidence shows that, from the beginning, human understanding of nature (or projecting onto nature) includes another dimension or significance of existence, purpose, origins, etc.. If this was just a mistake, I would think that evolutionary processes would have eliminated it by now. Hitchens has some hang up that he is either unaware of or refuses to address.
Hitchens was a slave, of his own choosing - to booze. Why is that something we should ignore, or perhaps even admire? He has no righ to tell other people to live.
You are a slave to your Master, a sheep to your Shepherd and Tomas, you too are a 'bride' of Christ. Why should we admire any of that? Hitchens has been dead for 13 years, looks like he lives on through his messages in YT videos.
He accomplished more than you I’m sure, while enjoying the drink. And his clarity and eloquence and fight for secular values are worth admiration. Talk to the pious about not telling others how to live.

"Love God with all your heart, with all your soul, and all your mind," Jesus of Nazareth (in his greatest teaching).... "The Kingdom of God has come near, metanoia, and believe this good news" Jesus of Nazareth. At the heart of Jesus' message is metanoia - defined most accurately as a change of perspective, and of mind. Unfortunately, Jerome translated this Koina Greek word into the Latin translation as "repent." Where religionists erred as "you are a bad person and need a savior." What we are in a battle with today are the literalists, of all stripes - those who say DO NOT THINK. At the heart of true spirituality (as taught by Jesus, and others) is thinking and a change of heart. Take the risk of thinking for yourself - and see that goodness is in your midst. Oh, but those babies that are dying of hunger, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Those who practice this love of others, (for example Mother Theresa (et al) are doing something about it. Unfortunately there are those among us who just consume everything on the planet for their happiness. Consequently we are in a race to the bottom- capitalism, greed, ego is in reality the causes of war, and hunger.
Jesus, is one god, the same god as the god of the bible? If so then Jesus is the murderer for millions of babies and infants in the Flood, the one who burned cities full of children, and the one who ordered the rape of thousands of young virgins.
It’s actually absolutely impossible. There is a God. I can’t believe that anybody can’t see that if they can’t see that they’re blind as a bat and completely immune to logic and reason in fact
Who ever asked you to be religious? This is what people ask for. God does not ask this. What is it God asks again?, to love unconditionally. God loves you and extends an open invitation to be with Him, but you are free to decline. I know the all arguments of an atheist, because I was an atheist for 24 years and an argumentative one at that.. Consider that it is the people who misrepresent themselves as christians, who give christianity a bad name. Jesus was quite outspoken about the hypocrisy of religious leaders, who knew nothing of God, but only sought their own glory, not knowing God. “But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward."

While I agree with Christopher on most points, I DON’T think the angry and aggressive approach is how you get people to listen or think for themselves. That just causes them to put up their walls and becoming defensive.
Their walls are already in place and their defensiveness is legendary and ever-present. We lose nothing by aggressively stating our case, because they have no intention of listening in the first place.
Being a doormat is never a winning strategy @jebaker2.
Interesting. I don't find him (or experience him) as angry or combative. And maybe our "experience" of him (and many of his comments) are born more out of our preconceived expectations of his views...or of our preconceived opinions of them and him...than reality!?!
Well...I get your point
...BUT...not all of us see, hear or experience C Hitchens as you just described him. Have you considered that your experience of him that way is more about your personality style...rather than that he actually is as you describe or experience him? In other words..maybe your experience of him says more about you than him? Comprende???
Chris is just treating these people the way they treat others.
I applaud him for this treatment.
Too much repetition.
How does that address any of the arguments he made?
@@ergonomover I am a slave or a bride of no one - not Christ, not the intellect, not booze and certainly not Hitchens. And I certainly wouldn't tell you what to admire. That is up to you, and you alone.

What a sad childish rage against God.

"take the risk of thinking for yourself, much more happiness will come your way..." Christopher Hitchens....
It is obvious that you know nothing about religion and the individual
Hichens is a mere distemper in the widerness!
It’s actually absolutely impossible. There is a God. I can’t believe that anybody can’t see that if they can’t see that they’re blind as a bat and completely immune to logic and reason in fact
You are right. There is one God. Thor and his Holy Hammer are here to guide our way.
To Valhalla!
We are waiting for your incredible, airtight logical arguments that prove a god exist.
God doesn't appear to ask anything of me. Likely because he doesn't exist.
@@hammalammadingdong6244 Truth is deeper than appearances.
Well, now you know at least one person who believes God exists. And, indeed, all He is asks is that we love.... That is if you are listening.
You do believe love exists, don't you?
Prove any such god exists.
God the Father Son and holy Ghost all hated and warned you over and over about religion.
So there are 3 gods?
Hitchens has never engaged God. So sad though I would agree with some of his thoughts with respect religion. Religion is sometimes not of God or Christ.
