  • In this video I explain what I've learned about how to shift a Belarus 102 Tractor (MTZ-102).
It is an interesting transmission that shifts like nothing I have ever seen before. I had trouble finding instructions on how to use the tractor so I am sharing what I know now to help others who may have a similar machine.

That's the first Belarus power shift I've seen. I have several of the all mechanical. The 800 and above series are so versatile with the 540 & 1000 pro. You can switch over to 1000rpm pto and run the tractor engine at 1250 rpm and have 540 rpm at the pro so you can power a pro generator just above idle and have cheap electricity.

I'm not sure what the position control arm is? I'm fairly new to tractors myself. I have the main lever that raises the hitch up and down, and I have a draft control lever at the very back of the console that has settings I, II, and III but the cable to mine is broken so I don't use it. Is one of those controls what you're interested in?

This version of MTZ - MTZ-102 with hydraulic semi automatic gearbox were pretty rear in soviet union. These were made largely for export and not in large amount. As soviets thinking were - for our people lets make something easy trivial and without large comfort. Lets go with manual transmission where gears could be changed only with clutch under load. This were for small- middle size tractors.
For larger XTZ T-150k were semi automatic hydraulic clutch gearbox - shifted under load. For K700/701 were hydro statistic gearbox where clutch function pedal opened pressure release valve in gearbox.

I think i understand the confusing bit of the 1-4 2-5 3-6 on the shift pattern sticker. The high numbers are the gears in high range and the low ones in low range. This is also on the European Deere tractors and some other brands do that too. With the European Deere you have 1-5 2-6 3-7 4-8
With the low range you're in 1 and high you're in 5. But I get the confusion. It confused the hell out of me the first time😅 on the 30 series the letters on the stickers are all white on the 40 series their white and yellow. This two color sticker is much better at clarifying the shift pattern.

This gearbox are bit different and came only with export versions of MTZ tractor plant tractor models. Not like the classical MTZ-82 gearbox only shifter are in side and for this were with semi automated shifter under load. These gearbox were not made large in CCCR cause they stayed with full manual gearboxes what were popular of their simplicity. I suppose these gearboxes were more for export tractors..
Gear schemes could be find on internet - but were seen in the video (time: 2:03) and are pretty trivial. Good gearbox version with sequential gears under load.
Sad thing for all old MTZ tractors were that their gearboxes doesn't have reverse for all gears..

In old models that were made in USSR had gear boxes with 2 settings like in yours h and b but it was just I and II with 9 gears to forward and 2 to back, its a bit complicated, like on I mode you had 1 R1 4 3 5 I think if I remember correctly and on II you have 2 R2 8 7 6 also there is gear 9 which worked in both I and II also it had low and high, but it had another lever with high and low so it had like 22gears

You are little bit wrong, Belarus tractors are made in only one factory, located in Minsk, the MTZ it`s a code from Minsky Tractor Zavod (Minsk tractor factory), the gearbox at your tractor it`s a very, very rare automatic version, usually they had one, or two gear stick on the right, and older tractors have it in the middle all of them are manual.
The H and B sing its a High and Low, pull it`s a Low range, push it and you have High range. In Low range you have 1, 3, 4, 5. On High range you have 2, 6, 7, 8 and 9 (only in high range) positions have various speeds, so thats why 3 is lower than 2 on High range, yeah its weird but thats how it works.
Additionally, in this knob you have a so-called torque multiplier in each gear and a reducer in the first range that allows you to go very slowly.
Well, manual gearboxes are much, much easier for use.
But, there are ready-made kits so you can change your gear stick from automatic to two or one. Some fun and work and the work with that will become more easier, I'm just not sure if they are available for you in America.
That another stick with I,II,III,IV and N, it`s a PTO speeds, not hydraulics, it sets the speed of the PTO shaft, 540 or 1000 RPM, as well as the shaft dependent on the speed of the tractor, i.e. the faster you drive, the faster the shaft turns, or independent, i.e. then the engine drives the PTO.
I don't know about American tractors, but in Europe every tractor has PTO dependent and independent.
Greeting from Poland :D , and this, how you can shift gears withous using clutch in older models.

@@nothandsomebuthandy I also know lot about these tractors because I have two 82, but I have never encountered an automatic transmission, I only knew that it existed and was only automatic, or rather semi-automatic, the principle of their operation is similar to those in some trucks.
Fortunately, these tractors are constructed in such a way that you can change many parts as you wish, including changing the stick from automatic to normal manual.
It shouldn't be expensive and any mechanic can handle it.

+ Belarus tracotrs all are MTZ produced to Mintsk tractor plant in Belorus.
But in CCCR times diferent other CCCR tractor plant tractors were exported to west under name Belarus.
