My family were cattle ranchers and their summer grazing lands were up there near Lake Tahoe. My dad went on one of the cattle drives. One of the smaller lakes nearby was named after my great-great-grandfather. My grandfather took me up there in the late 1950s and said that no one had ever been able to measure how deep Lake Tahoe was because it was so deep they didn't have the ability to measure it. Of course, that's not true but he didn't know it. The town of South Lake Tahoe was actually five different towns at the time.
I love your dogged determination to get to the very corner, which just about nobody else would’ve bothered with. Hey, none of them likely would have bothered to hike all the way to the northeast corner either! That’s what separates your channel from so many others. Great work!
I used to live in Reno which isn't very far from Lake Tahoe and to this day I still Miss the area. Thanks for adding Lake Tahoe to your tour. BTW: Lake Tahoe is around 1600 ft deep only at its deepest point, which is actually up in Crystal Bay in the Northeast part of the lake. It is still pretty deep where you were at though. I think pretty much anywhere you go in the lake. Unless you're right next to the shore, it's deep enough that no light penetrates to the bottom.
We lived in Tahoe for 20+ years as a. Family & you took 1:00 us to places we never new…. Thanks BTW the best drive is around the lake takes 3 1/2 hrs but worth it 🎖️

Lake Tahoe is very beautiful with a lot of scenic views and awesome looking countryside all around, I've never been there but I used to have relatives that lived in the area and they used to send us pictures here in Oklahoma of the area there and it always reminds me of a very popular television western series set in that area Bonanza my favorite tv show this was an awesome trip and tour thank you.🤠🇺🇲

@@rogertemple7193 Yeah, I'm telling you that it was, or at least partially. The Ponderosa Ranch is on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. So of course Tahoe reminds you of Bonanza, because it is Tahoe! :)
I grew up in Incline Village on the North Shore of Tahoe. Bonanza used the area for location shooting. They built a replica of the Cartwright house in Incline. There are some videos here on TH-cam of the Ponderosa Ranch complex before they closed it down. It was a magical place to grow up.
The history of Stateline/Edgewood, Nevada and South Lake Tahoe, California, is fascinating as it relates to the shifting boundary between the two states. Basically, the 1980 California v. Nevada Supreme Court case resulted in some Casino slot machines being located in Nevada. Another interesting aspect of the changes in the state line is the historic site of Aurora, which at various times in the past served as a county seat in both California and Nevada!
I want to get out to Aurora. I know there isn't much there but every time I've been to Bodie I look at the road heading to it and I want to know what's down it (though I know I probably can't actually go that way).
Steve, Thanks again for the Five Corners of California series. As I have aged, my tolerance for being on uneven water has vanished. So glad you made it and lived to talk about it. 😂 Blessings.
Hi Steve, you mentioined Huell Howser in your video. I miss Huell, he had some really good content in his videos. I don't know how far ahead you are on videos but if you are still up in the Donner Pass area there's an area where you can walk through some of the original tunnels for the Transcontinental Railroad. And right ourside of one of these is some Native America Petroglyphs in the rock. They are not blocked off unfortunately so people walk all over them. It's near the China Wall on Donner Summit area. You can Google that.
I actually have that on my list of places to check out and considered it, but having to spend an extra day there kind of threw our schedule off. Hopefully soon I'll get back up there. I want to explore the Lincoln Highway in the area too.
Nice suggestion. The history of Donner Pass is long and very interesting. The Dutch Flat toll road, which went over Donner, was mentioned early in this video. Steve will have to track down Norm Saylor for some deep personal history of the area. I was thrilled when a week in Tahoe this summer just so happened to coincide with the steam engine Big Boy coming up and over the pass. Got in a fantastic mountain bike ride in Summit Valley, swim in Lake Mary, and then topped off with Big Boy at full steam just about to enter the Mt. Judah tunnel. Epic!!!
Wonderful Tahoe video. Thank you. Grew up camping at D.L. Bliss; hiked the Rubicon Trail at 6 with my Teddy Bear. Ironic that Zuckerberg is gobbling up land at Sugar Pine Point. My grandmother introduced my father to the west shore of Tahoe in 1949. Her grandfather owned the Palo Alto house Zuckerberg currently owns. Funny additional family connection for me. Shame we don't still have that SF-Truckee-Tahoe City train service anymore. Would be a life saver these days. My kid, leaving at 5am, drove from the Bay to Truckee in under 3 hours a few winters back. Driving from Truckee to Palisades took ANOTHER THREE HOURS! And once they got there, no parking. A train would make this trip a breeze. Dang, the State of CA bought SGP property in '65, my birth year. I've complained that our public trust has not expanded with CA's population growth. Since my birth, the state's population has doubled, but has state park land doubled in that time? Doubt it - at least it's NOT Tahoe beachfront land acquisition made available to the public. Shame our public lands cannot keep up with demand. This explains the insane situation trying to find and secure a camping spot on the lake. Plus, why do we allow Nevada folks - with their anti-tax boasts - use parks CA taxpayers have secured? There should be consequences for tax-cutters. CA parks should be reserved for CA residents first and foremost. Out-of-staters should go to the end of the line AND pay higher rates. They do the latter in Utah; no reason CA shouldn't do same. And it's no better on the NV side. Wanna visit Sand Harbor? Better get there by 7am, probably earlier on the weekends if you want to get in. Again, WAY too much demand not being met. Not that the lake's roads can take more traffic though... E-bikes might fix much of this problem. 16:55 you were driving on a glacial lateral moraine separating Emerald Bay from Cascade Lake. LOVE that section of the highway! "Tallac" is pronounced "Tal-LAC" with emphasis on the second syllable. I hiked up Tallac five or so years ago and the view from up there took me by surprise. Felt like I could see the curvature of the earth. So much higher than I expected. (And I've been to the top of Rubicon Peak, a few other high points on the west shore, as well as up at Heavenly. None of these spots seemed even remotely as high as Tallac, view-wise. It's a long hike (6 hrs. for me) with lots of climbing and descending, but worth every step! BTW, meant to correct you in an earlier video about the Sierra Nevada. A lot of natives and non-natives us the misnomer "Sierras." The Sierra Nevada is ONE mountain range, so it's referred to in the singular, or "Sierra." Drives me crazy, especially when used on TV or by the media. Thanks for letting me correct your minor mistake. Love your sense of humor too. Gee, you'd think they'd put a marker at the corner. Otherwise, how can people tell if they're in CA or NV water?
Another great trip report, Steve. Some maps of the "south of Tahoe" stretch show the two boundaries, and I wondered how that occurred. May see you again at Goffs this winter!

My grandfather took me up there in the late 1950s and said that no one had ever been able to measure how deep Lake Tahoe was because it was so deep they didn't have the ability to measure it. Of course, that's not true but he didn't know it. The town of South Lake Tahoe was actually five different towns at the time.
It's incredible how deep it is. The Empire State Building would be completely submerged.
True.
But waters right off the shore at Rubicon Pt. drop approximately 1,200 feet. So, there's ample deep blue water in much of the lake.
We lived in Tahoe for 20+ years as a. Family & you took 1:00 us to places we never new…. Thanks BTW the best drive is around the lake takes 3 1/2 hrs but worth it 🎖️
Steve, you do the best work. I love the survey monuments!
Thanks!
Maybe they'll go and install a buoy out there! (Did I spell that right? Very embarrassing if so-- not a water guy)
You and your family are true troopers I’ve water skiing lake Tahoe in the summer and even in the summer that lake is cold. 🥶
Troupers
Your videos are very peaceful and calming. I enjoy seeing places I've not been also.
That's an incinerator. If you look closely on the lid, it says "incinerator co, " Can't make out the name of the company however.
Yeah, the lid was taller than my eyes so I couldn't read it in person. That's what I figured it was though.
That was fun. Thanks for keeping us warm and dry.
To finish the Huell Howser series you should find the geographic center of California.
I believe I saw that episode. But Hmm... I don't seem to remember anything about though.
We actually went out there awhile back. I thought it might be a good idea to visit some other state's centers, but some are not the easiest to access. th-cam.com/video/t_w1wuBpJ5k/w-d-xo.html
Lake Tahoe is very beautiful with a lot of scenic views and
awesome looking countryside all around, I've never been
there but I used to have relatives that lived in the area and
they used to send us pictures here in Oklahoma of the area
there and it always reminds me of a very popular television
western series set in that area Bonanza my favorite tv show
this was an awesome trip and tour thank you.🤠🇺🇲
Bonanza was actually filmed in the Tahoe region!
@@retstak I said that it reminded me of Bonanza but yeah I believe
it was partially filmed there though some of my kinfolk lived near the area
for many years and sent pictures of it to us thank you.🤠👋
@@rogertemple7193 Yeah, I'm telling you that it was, or at least partially.
Bonanza was actually filmed at Lake Tahoe! There was even a theme park there, but it closed 20 years ago or so.
Enjoy your videos. I had no idea lake Tahoe was that deep.
Steve, Thanks again for the Five Corners of California series. As I have aged, my tolerance for being on uneven water has vanished. So glad you made it and lived to talk about it. 😂 Blessings.
Thank you! I definitely need to get my sea legs.
Great adventure. You went above and beyond on this one.
Lived up at Tahoe for 5-6 years. We saw it snow in July down to lake level one year! The Lake makes it's own weather sometimes.
Epic!!!
Kudos to you brave soul. Surprised you weren’t wearing a life jacket! What an awesome history video once again. Loved it and thanks Steve
That is commitment bro! I watched till the end!!
I love all of Steve's quirky west coast travel history. I have been to some of these places and its great California stuff!!!
That was a great ending, it's beautiful out there
Very cool boat ride Steve! Origanal idea to go out there. Thanks a bunch. 21:53
Thank you.
Thanks!
Your videos are so wholesome, so fun and so informative. This is no exception, what a cool idea for a video! I always look forward to the next one!
I plan on coming out there for sure.
I look forward to your post each Wednesday! Thanks, Steve!
I appreciate that!
Awesome 👌
Thanks!
Spent many o summers in Tahoe, mainly on the north shore at what used to be called Poco Beach. The place is beautiful all around the lake, and the fishing was always good!
Every time I watch one of your Videos,I say "That is the best one I have ever seen!" ,Until you post a new one ! BTW, I have been to the Tahoe area many times , And missed many places you showed , Next time ,I know what not to miss!
Thanks for the video. You are a great teacher informing us of these historic places.
Excellent Steve! Did not expect you would take us up on this, but that's why you run such a great channel. Thanks... Too bad you picked a pretty bad day to go boating, this was a pretty rare cold front last week. I will be there soon with better weather!
Well done sir! Thanks for all of your effects to produce great videos 🙏
Another awesome video!! Greetings from Mount Gilead, OH. Lived in San Diego on Harbor Island on a sailboat for 11 years. God how I miss the southwest. Keep up the excellent work you do producing these videos!
I was just up at Tahoe. It's my favorite place in the world! And I loved Huell as I love your videos, Steve!
I remember flying over Lake Tahoe in an F-4 Phantom while training for Vietnam in 1968. Suffice to say we didn’t see anything so beautiful in Southeast Asia !
Damn! Out of Fallon I assume? I have great memories of camping at Tahoe when a few fighter jets scream over. Good stuff.
Thank you for your service.
Breathtaking 20:38-it actually caught my breath.❤
That really was beyond the call of duty! Very interesting. Thanks for this series, it’s been very interesting!
Hi Steve! Love what you did to get to the California corner, that was such a cool highlight! ❤❤❤!!! Seems like something I would've done myself just for plain curiosity. I can imagine the captain's face laughing as I did back home, nevertheless the video was great!😂😂😂!!! Thanks so much! 🥰🥰🥰!!!
Outstanding, Steve! Best channel on YT!!!
THANKS FOR THE HISTORY STEVE..BE SAFE
Absolutely breathtaking! It's no wonder Tahoe is so popular! Too bad the Poderosa no longer exists. Soundtrack was impeccable!👍 Safe travels!🙏
A Fabulous video, Ty❣️
Thank you!
I love this corner series
Gorgeous views!
I spent a summer running boats out of the Coast Guard station in Lake Forest. Towing drunks who ran out of gas in the middle of the night with 10+ foot waves was no party. I probably crossed that fifth corner a few times but this was a long time before GPS. Thanks, Steve! 😎
I stumbled upon your videos, a few months back and have been watching them regularly. I thoroughly enjoy them and I’m so glad you’re doing these types of videos! I’m loving this one in particular.
Thank you. Hopefully I wont stop anytime soon.
You do an amazing job with all the information that you share with your videos. Thank you.
Thank you for these videos; I get to see so many sites, people, history. Your wry humor is the greatest. Thanks again.
What a trooper! Thanks for going to the extreme to show us the 5th corner. San Diego Steve, you rock!
What else can I say but Wow! I’d been to Lake Tahoe several times on trips to the Sierras and skiing, but I never knew it was as big as it was. Thank you for hiking up that hill to show us the views.
I used to live in NCAL and have visited Lake Tahoe a lot. In fact, I own a timeshare there. Your video was hilarious. Thanks. I now live in AZ and enjoy those videos as well.
Another one! Great work Steve and Mrs Sidetrack, the boat ride was above and beyond.
Thanks. My wife is the real hero. Most of the water was hitting her side of the boat and she got absolutely drenched.
I visit Lake Tahoe couple of years ago; We didn’t really get to explore much outside of it but what we did see was quite beautiful area. Weather was weird but maybe it was normal but it was in April and was roughly in the 50s. It snowed in the morning on the day we took a two hour tour boat across the lake to Emerald Bay. The beach was covered in snow but when we returned from tour, it was completely snow free.
Currently on vacation in Tahoe. Love it here.
The Huell Howser Easter Egg levels up Sidetrack Adventures to Gold.
Bravo for making it to the fifth corner! I went to Tahoe once, jolly cold indeed. October, hadn't thought it through at all!
Another great video Steve. I love your calm straightforward narration even in the cold watery corner of California.
That was impressive to be the first one asking to be taken to the 5th corner of California in the middle of the lake. Subbed!
Love Lake Tahoe. Great video as usual.
Well i didn't know there was so much to do in Lake Tahoe and yet im a California Native. Born and raised in Union City. I love the boat ride to the center of the lake. Wish i could have taken that ride. Thank you Steve for all these lovely video's and the history of each of them. You put a lot of effort into each of them.
Hey Union City, Dublin here.
Steve, your dedication to the mission is beyond what we could ever have predicted! You are awesome. Thanks for braving the rough seas! Great video, as always!
That was great, Steve! My husband and I both laughed out loud at the end!
I could totally relate how you felt up on top of that rock. Want to be there, just don't like the edge.
Your efforts to get to that 5th corner and all the history of the border were wonderful.
Loved this video ❤
Thank you, I appreciate it.
Hello Steve that thing is a trash incinerator I have one on my property that has been here since the 40s we don’t use it but we leave it

Awesome! You went above and beyond, taking a boat out to the corner! I imagine Tahoe is a big enough body of water to create it's own weather to some extent. Makes me think of Loch Ness. I love that style of 1880s-1920s rustic architecture. The Awahnee hotel in Yosemite is a favorite. I laughed out loud when you said CA wanted the whole Sierras...because of the gold. Gold factors into many California stories! That view of Emerald Bay with the island is so famous. It was so fun to see those great views in 'real time', so thank you for that. I rode with a friend from South Lake Tahoe, up the west side of the lake to Truckee and on to Sacto one January in the early 1980s. We stopped in Reno for 15 minutes (as one does), and walked through a casino, back in the days when CA didn't have any. This has been a great series!
Thank you. Yeah, you don't realize how big the lake is until you see it.
Beautiful way to end the series Steve! Love the history. the beauty, and the lake. Sorry about you getting a bit wet, but thanks so much for going all the way in order to show us spot number 5.
Thank you so much for showing us the 5 corners of California and the interesting history you included in each of the videos.
It's great seeing you up here in the tahoe area. I live fairly close here and I learn a lot of history from you. Thank you for all of Your videos.
Beautiful video. Pretty big lake. Thanks for being a trooper and staying another day. As always, thank you for another adventure. Awesome!❤
The Cartwrights wouldn't recognize it. These explorations of the modern California frontier has been a great adventure.
Steve, what an effort! Many thanks. Beautiful area it is. My last visit was about fifteen years ago. This video gives the urge to visit again.
It's pretty cool you came here when we had a cold snap in August. The peaks had a pretty nice dusting of snow, and it was a nice taste of Fall. I'm glad you were able to showcase the lesser-known state parks and their histories.
