- Daley Ranch in Escondido is a hidden gem in San Diego County. Established in 1863 by Robert Daley, Daley Ranch is now a preserve that protects over 3,000 acres of historical ranch land. But the area came close to being lost to development.
The Daley family owned the ranch land for over 100 years, but in the 1980s they worked with an oil company to develop the property with the plan to build over 3,000 houses and a golf course.
Fortunately, the city of Escondido was able to buy the land for $21 million in the 1990s, and the land is now protected. Daley Ranch now has over 25 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails.
Also protected are some of the original buildings from the ranch, including the ranch house that was built in 1925 and a barn dating back to the 1800s.

We moved to Rancho Penasquitos in 1970. Carmel Mountain rd. only went to US 395, I-15 now, It was a dead end, across the freeway was the Daley ranch, Black Angus cattle ran the open land that laid between US395 and Pomerado rd. I would ride my bike to Poway over the dirt rd in the ranch. One time I was chased by a bull, you really get a feel for adrenaline! I remember the wide open land. My mom still lives in the Green Valley area or Poway and it has changed so much, this area is now homes, Costco and the development that could have happened to the Daley ranch in north Escondido! Seeing your video reminds me of the way this area used to look like. Thanks Steve for your vids. I really enjoy them!
Ya me too
Thank you. My Aunt and Uncle lived in Escondido and I remember going there in the early 90s and its grown so much from even then. Its crazy how developed the area has gotten.
I watched as this same thing happened to Orange County. So sad.
Im glad they saved the ranch. There are enough housing developments and golf courses.
Ah, Wednesdays are great. Why, because there is a Sidetrack Adventures video, excellent!
Thank you.
Live down the road off El Norte. We have hiked Daley since the Daley family still raised cattle there. '74. Found their bull in a field by accident one time. 😂
Got caught by the ranch hands on horseback and escorted out. Nice guys. Hiked before roads and trails and when it was covered in Manzanita trees.
Made camp under giant Manzinita. Miss those days! Thx for covering it!❤❤❤
I live in Las Vegas now. I grew up on Fern Street and never knew about that ranch. We moved there back in 1963. I used to play at the reservoir almost every day.
I bet it was amazingly peaceful then!
Thank you for sharing this gem and thanks to the City of Escondido for preserving a piece of American history that could've been lost forever.
You're welcome. That $21 million they spent on the land is a huge bargain with today's prices.
@@SidetrackAdventures Wow you aren’t kidding lol.
I know the area you talk about but never knew to history behind it, the landscape sure looks better than 3000 homes and golf course. Thank You Sir. THE SARGE
I agree. There's enough places for homes in the area, great to preserve some outdoor space too.
My Family & I hiked this way back in the early 2000's with 4 of our kids. We got to see the ranch house. I'm so glad they didn't tear it down. I remember when they want to. I'm glad Escondido preserved it's History. Thanks you Steve for sharing this. It's been a long time since I've been up there. I'm Thankful I got to see it.❤
STEVE! 7.5 mile hike! Well, that certainly gave you your 'Daley' exercise! 😆
7.5 miles and about half was uphill! I wish I was young enough to hike that. Loved seeing this.
So the Daley ranch is open daily?
Yeah, luckily it wasn't too tough of a hike.
Very impressive Steve. 7.5 miles is a long hike. I parked at the bottom of the paved road once to go on the monthly tour of the ranch house. I was so tired after walking up that steep road for a mile or so to get to the house, I had no energy to even attempt to hike one of the trails. 🤷♀️
My partner and I operated a surface sand mining operation in the San Pasqual Valley. We supplied the sand the Daley Corp used to produce their asphalt. I lived in Escondido from 1955 until 2020. What great memories.
Watching all of Steves’s interesting videos is a relaxing break from watching the political news programs.
I always look forward to another episode. Thx Steve 🤠
I skim news programs, only fast reading the headlines to keep up on what's going on, then go for the full video on documentaries like Steve's. He's really good, and makes the world a much better place, in my opinion. Travel shows are good for diversion, too.

Keeping up with current events is important. However, I like your perspective. Thanks 🤠
I used to live in Escondido California when I was a kid around 1994-1996. This brings back a ton of memories.
I used to visit family up there around that time and its amazing how much the city has grown since then.
Nice to see an area preserved for future generations to enjoy.
My brother used to live in Rancho Bernardo in The Trails, Daley Ranch was his go to for both hiking and biking. He now lives in the beach community of Leucadia.
I’ve visited a few times from the U.K. I love your part of the world!
Greetings back to the UK! My boss in Reading sometimes hears the birds chirping over the phone and says “it sounds warm there.” UK is also beautiful, best wishes to you.
Some of the most beautiful country in Southern California! So glad to know that it will be preserved for future generations to experience. Having lived in Poway in the 70's while serving in the Navy, I fell in love with the North County. Never knew about the ranch , but I do remember seeing that water tank as a kid while driving to San Diego from Riverside. Thanks again Steve for bringing us along for another adventure!
man I love the southern California landscapes
They're great.
Desert, dry, desert, more dry, occasional water trickle, snakes, lizards, scraggy plants. Ok, there is a certain charm and attraction to this environment. Having been born and raised in Oregon lush Willamette Valley, I'll stick to wet and rainy. I do enjoy the vidoes of it, though. Hope you're glad I'm not there clogging up the vast, open, flat space with my person. Enjoy!
I was born and raised in Southern California, and I also love our diverse landscape. ✌️
@@conniewojahn6445 only lived in the deep South.. I'll be happy any place without humidity
Same!! I was blessed to grow up here.
When I livd in Escondido back in 1970, the ranch or trail wasn't there. The ranch looks awesome.
Thank you for taking us on your hike! The building you looked inside still had a line shaft suspended from the rafters. That would likely make it a machine shop or smith's shop. That workbench looks a lot more recent, but perhaps hints at its earlier use. Since it is unlikely that there would be enough flowing water nearby for a wheel, I'd wonder whether they had an old steam engine or a hit-n-miss engine on that shaft. It might have been salvaged years ago, but sometimes you might see one abandoned in the bushes.... The folks at the Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum in Vista might be able to comment on the setup at the Daley Ranch.
Track houses ,,,blah everywhere you look ,,,I am happy to know that the ranch is still there as some areas of land need to be preserved for nature for our wildlife and people to enjoy ,,I moved out of the city years ago to riverside country where there are more rural areas ,,but now there are track houses on the other side of town ,,Dayley ranch is beautiful ,,I love the scenery and the views ,,Steve you and your family always find great places to explore ,,thanks you all and have a pleasant spring and summer
I used to live in Escondido. God do I miss it.
Lived in old Poway...dirt roads, riding our horses and found my first love. DeeDee M.
Poway is classic north county area since forever. Best wishes.
I went to Midland School and Poway High...do remember Dave Millard
Man! I just missed you! I live down the road from the ranch and hike/walk it frequently. My girlfriend and I rode our horses in Daley in the 1990s entering from the north side, the hidden meadows area. We called ourselves the “traveling band of commotion”, as we rode 2 horses and I ponied another, letting it off lead to run next to us. We also had 8 dogs with us. We would get chased off, periodically. My friend got off her horse and thigh shears and machete made several trails in the ranch that are now officially labeled and are favorites with mountain bikers.
My parents used to live in Escondido for many years. They owned some land in Vista that bordered the Rancho Guajome, which at the time was mostly a nature preserve. Many a year I would be down there hiking and horseback riding the trails at that Rancho. The area there is beautiful. When I used to live in Utah and had my own ranch, during the Christmas Holidays, my family would drive down there and spend the time visiting my parents and my husband's family. My kids used to love it, they thought it was summer time while we stayed there. I do miss it though, having been born in SoCal, but it's become an expensive state to live in now days.
Thank you for sharing. What a beautiful place! Props to those who recognized is beauty and preserved it for everyone, not just the wealthy few who could afford a McMansion.
I spent my early teen years living in Escondido in the late '60s-early 70s but can't say I ever heard of the Daily Ranch, although we drove through it on a backroad from the Valley Center dump to Escondido. Thanks for providing all of this historical perspective, makes me appreciate my youth all the more. Loved my years in Escondido, but would hardly recognize the place today. As someone who's always been fascinated by history, I really appreciate all of the research you do to fill out your presentations. Thanks, Steve, very educational.
What a change, leaving London for San Diego County. Going from cold and wet to hot and dry. Great watch, now I got a new hike to put on my list......
Steve's got a great speaking voice and nice mellow but moving background music... He does a lot of research he is willing to share, and thus has guided us thru another great video....thanks
I consider myself fortunate to be a so CA native from Redlands. I remember the 1960's well when the entire SB valley was covered in orange groves with a few expansive pastures and farms in between and the majestic mountains covered by snow in the winter and orange Poppies and other wild flowers in the spring and summer. We lived in an old farm house in the orange groves and our nearest neighbors were a couple of Hells Angels and their old ladies who lived in another old farm house about a mile down the road. We didn't have much in terms of material possessions, but had no worries because no matter where we looked it seemed as if we were living in a land of milk and honey. On summer weekends our family often took memorable road trips to Escondido, Laguna Beach and Coronado. I'm happy to learn a small piece of that golden era of old CA has been preserved for future generations as I experienced it growing up.
Havent been back to southern Cali in years….grew up in San Diego….all i remember about Escondido was the wild animal park….loved that place. Glad its still more nature then developed.
Thanks again Steve for this video. It's great to see what you are exploring. After living in California for 63 years (now living in the PNW) there are so many places I missed out on! So keep these coming!
I’m from the area and have been all over these trails and Ranch… I’ve seen Mountain lions at least a half dozen times.. several bear Dixon lake.. and have seen their track all over. It’s a beautiful clean spot
No golf courses and it's also great to see the old place hasn't been vandalized and grafittied into oblivion.
The Friends of Daley Ranch do a great job looking after the place.
I love Escondido history! I was born at Palomar Hospital and grew up in old town Escondido off seventh and Broadway just down the street from City Hall and grape day park! I love Escondido, and it’s become such a beautiful and clean city In the past 15 years too!
There is a place called Malibu Creek State Park. That’s the name the state gave it. But to me it’s the 20th Century Fox Ranch. They owned it and I went there many times. Lots of movies and tv shows were filmed there. Most all of the sets are gone now even the giant pool with a huge backdrop to film a few seconds of ships in the ocean for a scene in Cleopatra. Many beautiful views and very different around each corner. Just like a studio would need. You would love it.
I was raised in poway for 32yrs left in 80s the fun we have all over that place graduated poway high
Remember old farmers market on Midland rd.
I spent my middle&high school years in Poway too. Roughly 84-91. Can't imagine how more developed it would be now.
Wow, Sidetrack Steve. I grew up in North County and here’s yet another spot I never knew existed that you’ve discovered.
Makes me homesick for San Diego.
Thank you.
Most people who are susceptible to Poison Oak do not need a sign pointing it out, we know what it looks like! Great video!
Nicely done video Steve, interesting bit of history. So happy that the City of Escondido had the good sense to save and protect this beautiful area. My aunt lived in Poway during the 60's and we used to go there to visit her.and stopped in the meat market in Romona and drive the back roads to Julian. It is such a beautiful area and thank you sharing that area with us. Great job!
Loved this video and so happy the ranch was saved from development. A beautiful place!! Thank you Steve for taking the time and energy to show us around!!
Wow ! A City did the right thing , how refreshing , thanks for a look at a beautiful place with a great story behind it...
My son introduced me to your channel. I’m a native Californian and grew up in SoCal. I love all the unique places you find in the West. I have my new favorite channel!
I’ve really grown to enjoy your excursions and narratives. This is no exception. Thank you for the outing.
Thank you.
I live in east San Marcos and have hiked Daly Ranch may times. Your video gave me 90% more that I never knew of this ranch. Thanks
Thank you Steve for another wonderful video. The trail looks absolutely great for hiking, really spectacular, with a 7-mile hike at that! Wish I could have joined you. Thanks a bunch.
I'm pretty slow stopping to film all the time.
THANKS STEVE
Thank you.
My sister lives in Escondido has hiked and enjoyed this ranch so many times I hope to join her from Maine this fall 😊❤
Love hearing about the local history. So glad it didnt end up as part of the urban sprawl that North county is becoming
It's such a great mountain biking area. A lot of climbing, but worth it.
Very cool mini documentary here Steve . When I worked at Hawthorne Caterpillar from 1980 to mid 1991 I had the opportunity to meet with a bunch of the Daley’s as I worked in the truck shop there and did a lot of work on the Bluebird motorhomes they owned , even swapping in Newer model Cat turbo charged engines for them and various other upgrades. I remember them being gracious and very easy to work with & were long time friends of the owner , Tom Hawthorne. Surprisingly I’ve never hiked the Ranch before , but am now going to have to go give it a visit sometime soon once summer temps cool down a bit . Great to see ALL you cover on your video’s, and Thanks for all you share .😎👍
Although its TH-cam i enjoy these great trips. 👍
Thanks!
You are an incredible person for taking us through all these "Hidden Gems". I love your channel
Beautiful country. I'm glad it's even preserved. Great channel! Thanks!
Love your work.
Thank you. I really appreciate it.
Keep up your adventures!! Totally enjoy! 😁
❤you always have the best and most informative videos! 😊
Sir… you’ve earned my subscription! Thanks to my algorithm your videos pop out on my feed . I love your videos cause I love the desert and love how you tell us the history. Their so much history thats unknown in the deserts to most people. Something about traveling through lonely open roads, through plains of open desert with nothing between you and what the i could see . Imagine what the people before us had to go through to travel through this deserts . My respect!
Thanks, I appreciate it!
I love your videos, excellent videography and narration, very informative. Thanks!
Thanks for another great video.
Thank you, I really appreciate it.
I just found your channel today and have spent several pleasant hours watching your videos. I spent a bit of time in California and wish that I could have seen and explored more of its rich historical places. Thank you for all of the research that you do for each adventure - it makes it so much more real for me. I am so glad that I found it!!! 🤗💖
Wow! Seven miles is a long hike! Glad this place was preserved as well. I recall seeing "Daley Construction" stamped on sidewalks in older areas of town. Looking for date stamps on sidewalks was a hobby of mine when I lived in University Heights. You never know with mountain lions; there have been sighting is Del Cerro and La Mesa in the last month.
At Mission Trails they have a map up showing recent sightings of them and couldn't believe one had been seen near the dam.
Thank you, so beautiful.
Great video again, Steve. You did a really nice job covering this wonderful place.
Thank you.
Hi Steve, I thoroughly enjoy your movies and stories. Keep up the good work! Greetings from Belgium. Glenn
❤ awesome ...
a great piece of History and beautiful scenery too
Oh nice, I haven't had the opportunity to visit your channel in a month, lo and behold you made a video about an area 5 minutes from my house in that time.
Steve, we need lots and lots and lots of more videos please lots more
At least 2 a week.
That is a wonderful place and I so agree with you about preserving it. I grew up on a lovely 🥰 farm that now sits under houses. It broke my heart 💔 and I never really recovered from the loss. Thanks for the look around a beautiful 🌈 place preserved for everyone and the wildlife.👍☮️🌞💙
Yeah, and the price of $21 million sure is a great deal now.
Your videos are always so calming. Thank you!
Beautiful hike. Thanks for recording it for us.
A great video! I’m so glad this place was preserved from development! Beautiful views!!
Thanks Dave for another interesting visit. In case you haven't already showcased, another ranch in the area to check out is Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park in Carlsbad. Leo was best known as the side kick of The Cisco Kid in the 1950's TV series.
Steve, your narratives rock. Learned many interesting things. Come visit Mt Shasta, CA.
Mt Shasta, another awesome place we have in California.
I used to live in San Marcos for 30 years 1990-2020. I didn't take advantage of daley ranch until my last 4-5 years. I loved every hiking trail the ranch offered. My dog and I loved the entirety of that ranch and we miss it very much now.
Bang up job again. Thanks Steve.
Thank you.
Thank you Steve, I had the blues from the june-gloom, but your video inspired me to get off my butt and drive 20 minutes to DR... I did a 5 mile loop of Sage Trail and East Ridge. I found sunshine, several ponds with water!, and some hills were still leaking stored rainfall. My wife and I both agree you have a special way of making anything interesting. We hope to run into you some day. 🙂
Great share!
Nice one…. Thanks for sharing!
Love your videos! Beautiful and informative. Thanks for sharing them.
Great Videos Steve Mountain Lions are a threat and Rattle Snakes. It’s getting warmer there coming out. And they can’t hear so they get spooked just like we do. I live off Dairy Mart Rd off the 5 frwy. And last year my neighbors 2 dogs got bit by a rattlesnake. Thankfully they got thru it he rushed them to Tijuana where I’m sure it’s cheaper. To get an Antidote. I’m always worried I have to dogs also. Be safe out there Steve. 👍
So glad the City was able to preserve this area. Around the Phoenix area they can't level and destroy the desert fast enough! Thanks for your videos!
Thanks Steve!
What a great hike!
Escondido is home to my new fav coffee source: Pannikin! Will plan to hike the ranch in the Fall. Thanks!
What a treasure, so glad it was purchased and is safe from development. Hats off to Escondido for doing that. If I were younger, I'd love to horseback ride on these trails.
Thanks for another interesting episode.
There are too many golf courses in the country today and not enough Ranch houses! I presently live in a Suburban neighborhood and would do anything to have a nice Ranch House out in the countryside! That's the good old days!!
Excellent video! Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Love this area.
My Grandparents lived in Escondido from 1991 to 2006, spent so many wonderful summer vacations there with them and the places you mentioned, like Rancho Bernado, Valley Center bring those memories flooding back! Dont remember this place at all but i sure wish we'd have visited there! THANK YOU so much for sharing!!
I love this channel! These videos are so calming to me. I live o the east coast and I have never been out west, so this is wonderful. Everyday at lunch, I watch these and it relaxes me, and helps me get through my hectic IT day. Steve should have a TV show, he would be great!
😅 Yup, fun to take lunchtime tours with Steve in The West! 😎✌️
Thanks, I appreciate it.
TH-cam shows are BETTER than anything you can find on regular TV these days. He's great just as it is now. Only watch Jeopardy on TV anymore. That's it.
I got winded just watching you climb that hill. LOL Thanks for another great video!
Another Good Sidetrack Adventure....Thanks
A couple months ago I ran every singe trail at Daley in one day, (the ascent up stanley peak at mile 29 was no joke). One of my favorite areas to hike and run, every trail has something to offer and its kind of sad to see how lush SD county could have been without all the overdevelopment.
Super cool, Steve! I used to run there several times a year. Thank you for doing this video!!!
No problem. Glad you liked it.
Great vid Steve, thanks for your work.
Glad you enjoyed it
Beautiful spot. Looks well worthy of a visit.
What a beautiful area! Thanks Steve!
Love the channel!
Thank you.
As a 75 year San Diego County resident, I knew of the Daley Ranch and some of the history but have never visited it. Thanks for doing this video and all the research you did on this project.
Once again I really enjoy your videos,THANK YOU for your efforts🤗😎🤗😎
Love these videos. There's something about the combination of video, the storytelling, the pacing and the music that's almost hypnotic. Great job, as always.
