I’m so happy Hunger Games was in the list! It was the first YA series I read, so it holds a special place in my heart (even though it was mostly depressing lol)
The first time I read Hunger Games, my middle school was doing this whole thing where there was twelve challenges and each one you completed got your name thrown into a hat. If they drew your name, you got to take a field trip to the movies to watch the movie. If you were in the after school program (like me) and you completed all twelve activities, you automatically got to go. The theatre was open just for us and it was amazing! I will never forget how hyped the whole school was about that book.
I love your optimism, Jesse. I wanna take a moment to appreciate you and your sassy amazingness. I came across your channel last year and boy oh boy was it the best decision EVER! I know that if we met Irl we would get along but we're in 2 different parts of the world. I guess what I'm trying to say is Jesse, you're awesome and don't let anyone make you forget that 🤗🤗🤗
I’ve never thought about the best books of the decade, but I’ll list mine by series since I can’t quite remember when they came out. Harry Potter, Eragon(Inheritence Cycle), Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Mortal Instruments, The Infernal Devices, Percy Jackson, The Three Dark Crowns series by Kendare Blake, and Ash Princess by Laura Sebastian is what I can think of right now. Thank you Jesse for your videos!

I agree with everything you say in this video. Love it. A monster calls, perks of being a wallflower and Miss Peregrines, Fault in our stars are all amazing and on my best books of the decade list.
When Jesse is talking about Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children, no surprise, it made me realise that most people hated their favorite book, song, etc, the first time they read/heard it and it can make you love it a bit more because you're always thinking, why did I hate this the first time?
Highly unpopular opinion: I personally didn't think "the fault in our stars" was that good.. I mean don't get me wrong. It definitely did unleash emotions in me, but I just don't think it's as good of a book as everyone seems to think it is 🤷🏻♀️. I'll see myself out...
I have a couple of books that influenced me in the past decade. 1: Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian. I read this book for my grade 8 English Class and I absolutely loved it. Just falling into the world of World War Two and the experiences of the children who were sent to the country side. This book also touches on Child Abuse (not by mister Tom) which was done is such a brutal way but so elegantly done. At the time I hadn’t read a book in about a year once again it was for English class. Goodnight Mister Tom encouraged me to start reading again which I loved doing as a kid. At this time I fell in love with the MazeRunner Series and Tomorrow Code. But if I didn’t read Goodnight Mister Tom I can guarantee that I wouldn’t be reading right now. No book in English Class has made me feel the same way. 2. Throne of Glass book series by Sarah J Maas. For a period of about 6 months my parents Marriage fell apart (they are happily together now 🙂) at the time so many things were happening I was injured and had to take a year break from dance, my parents weren’t together, I had to try and figure out living in another state away from my friends and had to start at a new school where I knew no-one. During this hard time I began reading throne of glass which was suggested by one of my friends from home. As soon as I moved I signed up at the library and started reading the series. The Throne of Glass series was the thing making me so happy while I was struggling. It influenced the type of books I liked and brought me upon the author Sarah J Maas. Her other Series; A Court of Thorns and Roses is my favourite book series of all time. 3. All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven. How do I put into words what this book made me feel. It was absolutely extraordinary and nothing can compare to it. I’ve always had a favourite book (Heir of Fire by Sarah J Maas) and I was sure that nothing could ever beat it. This threw that book in the bin. I’m considered downing all my previous reviews just so 5 stars I gave it doesn’t mean nothing. This novel deserves more than 5 stars. It deserves the god damn universe. This piece of literature is incredible and no book in the world can compare. The writing, storyline and detail is remarkey-able (you see what I did there) and continuing on with just another random book is really hard. I’m constantly comparing every book I read to All The Bright Places. The way it so elegantly approaches such a touchy subject in such a manner that really changes people’s lives. Some people hate this book because it shows that it’s ok to take the easy way out but I disagree. If anything it shows the harsh reality of suicide and what goes through the mind of someone like Finch with his mental illness. On the other hand it shows the alternative to committing suicide, it shows that things eventually do get better and to use the people around you to lean on and assist you through the tough time. Violet Learns to live from a boy who wants to die and I can guarantee that any person who reads this book learns to live too. Violet was changed by Finch, Violet and Finch made me change the way I look at the world and I hope it changes your view too. I thank Jennifer Niven for crafting such a novel it really changed my perspective and brought to light the harsh realities for Mental Illness. I have a few other favourites like the A court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas (3rd Favourite book) but it wasn’t as much as an influence in regards to my life and the books I read as the others.
@@manishbarle6589 well, the inheritance cycle is frankly my favourite series ever, so I'm happy to talk about it. It's set in an urban fantasy world, Alagäesia where there are dwarves, elves, urgals and humans. Some people have said it reminds them of Lord of the Ring but I haven't read it so I can't tell for sure. In older times, dragons existed and some of them were linked with a human or elf, their Dragon Rider. The Dragon Rider's age is described as golden because they ruled Alagäesia and made sure it was at piece. But, a mad Dragon Rider, Galbatorix, commited genocide and killed all the dragons but one to have as his own and he ascended as king of the humans and he rules them to this day. Our story follows Eragon, a boy who against all odds becomes a Dragon Rider and becomes everyone's hope of defeating the mad king. The books have some awesome battle scenes, they keep you on edge, they're interesting as fuck, the characters are interesting and diverse and I love these books to death. I think you should read them and form your own opinion. For me at least, the story's pace is well done and the pages fly by so I wouldn't worry so much about its lenght. I hope you decide to pick it up and sorry if my enflish is questionable, I'm not native.
My favorites this past decade are: Salt to the sea Between shades of grey Fan girl Pride and prejudice There are others I liked but these are the ones I’ve read on repeat this decade. Like sometimes twice a week.
My favs: - The Sandman - Deathnote - The Library at Mount Char - Sunstone - Traitor's Blade (Greatcoats) - Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - The Magicians - The Sun is Also a Star - Red Rising - The Hate U Give Happy Reading and Happy New Year everyone!
You talking about being a "shy boy," I connect with that on a spiritual level. I'm SO shy IRL and am useless when in comes to socializing, which sucks in school. But, you have actually inspired me to, hopefully, start my channel in the next decade, so thanks Jesse. Have a good New Year!!
Just wanted to say that the Hunger Games is also the series that got me into reading in the first place, I read them when i was in middle school and have been an avid reader ever since. It's so cool to see people share their love of this series as it was such a pivotal point in my life. Happy new year!
Without you always talking about Miss Pergeorine's I probably not have picked it up and fell in love with the story and the characters like I have. Thank you Jesse
One of the most influential books of this decades for me would be a darker shade of magic because it got me into reading again and now I can't stop buying books
The most influential book I read this decade would have to have been The Book Thief. After reading through it the first time, I flipped back to the first page immediately to read again. Read it through again a week after that before I had to return it to the library at school. The next four years I read it once every four months, like clockwork. It was the book that sucker-punched me back into reading. Absolutely love it to bits.
I relate so much to this. The hunger games kickstarted my reading as well and The Perks of being a wallflower is my favourite book of all time so I felt everything you said about it
My top three of the decade are (Note: not all came out in this decade): • "The Fault in Our Stars"- this is my favorite book of all time. It connected with me in ways that no other book has. I've read it 10 times. John Green certainly is an author of the decade as well. • "Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" by Jules Verne- this is the book that got me into classics. I will always and forever love it. •"Crime and Punishment" by Fyodor Dostoevsky- my favorite classic ever. The discussion on the human mind and morality was amazing. I'm rereading it in February for a group read.
The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry was my favorite this year bcs it helps me through hard times, alongside Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. The Perks of Being A Wallflower always had special spot in my heart bcs I've seen some part of me in Charlie. May you have a wonderful reading life in 2020, Jesse! Keep making our tbr stack dagger-stare at us :)
In this decade I lost and slowly regained my love for reading. I am dyslexic so school really destroyed reading for me. Lucky I got help from the school later. But when I got the help I was 17 and at the time and had already given up on reading since it was really exhausting for me. I didn't have any energy to read after I did my homework which took forever. When I got help I got a program which read my homework for me and I also got access to many audiobooks. Suddenly I could do my homework much faster and had the energy and time to read in my free time. I could do it at my own pace and not get stressed out about the fact that I needed to read it and understand it for school the next day.
Here's my list: *_The Shadowhunters Chronicles by Cassandra Clare_* *_Heartstopper by Alice Oseman_* *_Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell_* *_Carry On by Rainbow Rowell_* *_Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell_* *_A Curse so Dark and Lonely by Bridgid Kemmerer_* *_The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee_* *_Wilder Girls by Rory Power_* There are many more but if I were to list all of them this comment would be verryyyyy long, lmao.
Yes. The hunger games was the best. I was in the same space when reading those. Falling in love with reading and getting lost in the story. This video was so wholesome and was exactly what I needed today. I’m pretty tired of hearing so many booktubers talk about this years books so it was nice to have a bit of a flashback.
A new version of The Hunger Games is coming in May revolving around the tenth Hunger Games!!! I am so excited. Anyone who didn't know, the name is Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
He is so adorable! It gives me the warm fuzzies when I see a young person develop a year love for reading. I am 60 years old now but was a reading addict from the age of six and when I was in middle school and high school are you off and read until three in the morning and my mom used to have a fit because she could not wake me up for school!
I had lost interest in reading because I was forced to read books I disliked in school. One day I found turtles all the way down and while I didn't love it, it was the book that got me into reading again and I'm so thankful for that !
I watched this video for the first time in a while. And to my surprise, I found that I have read 6 of the books mentioned in this video in the last few years! Plus, they are all my favorite books now! If I had not found your channel on TH-cam and watched your videos, I am sure I would never have read these books, seen the world I never knew, and met the wonderful characters! Today, after watching this video for the first time in a long time, I felt so grateful to have found you and your channel once again! Thank you so, so, so much, Jesse! I hope we can continue to enjoy books together (^-^) 💚
Happy new year everyone! This is so nostalgic. I remember 10 years ago, the first YA book I read was Twilight. Say what you will about it, but I loved it as a teen. It started my love of reading YA. I was only into mystery books then, but Twilight introduced me to new genre of books.
In order of significance, starting from most impactful- Tuesday's with morrie A room of one's own Persuation The prophet Never let me go Where the rainbows end ('coz it inspired me to write emails) The fault in our stars
Thank you for mentioning Six of Crows!! I love all of the other books you’ve mentioned, but six of crows will always have a special place in my heart, and Crooked Kingdoms is my all time favorite book, and therefore my favorite book of the decade. (Although I was 6 at the beginning of the decade so that’s pretty much the age when I actually started reading) Hunger Games is definitely a close second, because at the time I read it, it was such a different kind of book than what I usually read, and a lot darker and more interesting, and it really opened my eyes to a whole new genre of books
Not in particular order..These are my favorite books of the decade.. Harry Potter series Percy Jackson series Divergent Hunger Games Eliza and her monsters Caraval series The Da Vinci code Geekerella Night circus Red queen
It’s like he literally thought of all my favorites! The Hunger Games was the first YA story I ever read and The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry was one of the first adult fiction novels I’d read. Although I think my favorite series of the decade would have to be Kiera Cass’ The Selection Series 😍
I haven't been reading for the past few months.. But watching your videos makes me want to read again like "damn im missing so much worlds to get in 😧" THANK YOU
Honestly, I love it when Jesse rants about Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. It's my favorite book too. I'm totally present for that ted talk.
Petra O'Connor I definitely agree with that. I love the original book with my entire being and it’s one of the only trilogies I know of where I really enjoy the sequel. The third is pretty bad ngl but I agree it’s worth reading if you enjoy the collection
You have talked about Miss Peregrine's so often that I finally went out and bought the first two books. I have no regrets, thank you for the recommendation.

Harry Potter 4. Unwind (on book 3 but omg it's definately one of my favourites) 5. Anne of green gables 6. Hunger games series 7. Legend trilogy (haven't read Rebel though) 8. The enchanted wood series (guilty pleasure!) 9. The inheritance cycle 10. The gentlemen's guide to vice and virtue 11. The book thief Well these are just some books off the top of my head but I guess since these are the ones I remember most they probably mean the most to me. And as usual a brillient list Jesse!
So glad I decided to read Miss Peregrine’s home for peculiar children after listening to Jessie talk about it in a video this year. It was the BEST decision and a clear 2019 favourite!

30 mins left of 2019 here in the Philippines!! Advance Happy New Year Jesse! I hope 2020 is gonna be a great reading year for all of us 🤗

They're too underrated
Omg those are my favorites too
One question, can u tell me a little about eragon? I thought of taking it but it's thickness appalled me
@@manishbarle6589 well, the inheritance cycle is frankly my favourite series ever, so I'm happy to talk about it.
My favorites this past decade are:
Salt to the sea
Between shades of grey
Fan girl
Pride and prejudice
There are others I liked but these are the ones I’ve read on repeat this decade. Like sometimes twice a week.
i love how while you mentioned some popular books, you mentioned a lot of underhyped books i've never heard of as well. thank you for that!
When he said, “she let out a breath she didn’t even realize she was holding.” I got flashbacks of reading that line today. 😂😂
My favs:
- The Sandman
- Deathnote
- The Library at Mount Char
- Sunstone
- Traitor's Blade (Greatcoats)
- Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
- The Magicians
- The Sun is Also a Star
- Red Rising
- The Hate U Give
Happy Reading and Happy New Year everyone!
I hope you follow through with it!
Okay but like, I’ve never EVER seen such a perfectly organised, aesthetic book shelf! I need it!
I used to read books in 3 days, now it takes me forever 😭
*sees hungergames. YAAS HAPYY HUNGERGAMES FOLKS
(i recently reread the series, can you tell?)
Omg THE ACHIVED!! I almost NEVER see anyone talking about this one and that makes me so sad bc honestly I love it more than the savage song
The hunger games kickstarted my reading as well and The Perks of being a wallflower is my favourite book of all time so I felt everything you said about it
Read Sixty Days by Hernan Jaen , 5 stars, amazing story
My top three of the decade are (Note: not all came out in this decade):
• "The Fault in Our Stars"- this is my favorite book of all time.
Can we take a moment to appreciate the fact that 95% of my book recommendations list is from Jesse? Thank you! Happy New Year!!
The Red Queen series is one of my fav book series I've read. I also really got into reading this decade!
I am glad you got back to reading 😊
A bit more than 7 hours left of this decade for me. My favorite was Perks and basicly all John green books. Also the Gone books
Jesse churning out some quality content on New Years Eve! Thank you
:D Happy New Years Eve
@@jessethereader Happy New Years to you too! May 2020 be better than 2019 for you!
@@jessethereader oh and thank you for The Archived rec, I loved it!
Here's my list:
*_The Shadowhunters Chronicles by Cassandra Clare_*
*_Heartstopper by Alice Oseman_*
*_Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell_*
*_Carry On by Rainbow Rowell_*
*_Wayward Son by Rainbow Rowell_*
*_A Curse so Dark and Lonely by Bridgid Kemmerer_*
*_The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee_*
*_Wilder Girls by Rory Power_*
There are many more but if I were to list all of them this comment would be verryyyyy long, lmao.
I really loved the black color after seeing your shelves.. they are just amazing.😢
Yes. The hunger games was the best. I was in the same space when reading those. Falling in love with reading and getting lost in the story.
This video was so wholesome and was exactly what I needed today. I’m pretty tired of hearing so many booktubers talk about this years books so it was nice to have a bit of a flashback.
i just wanna say thank you for being an influence on my love for reading the past decade ✨
A new version of The Hunger Games is coming in May revolving around the tenth Hunger Games!!! I am so excited. Anyone who didn't know, the name is Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
Me: *sees title* oh Harry Potter
Also me: I never was good at maths anyway
They turned "A Monster Calls" into a movie, and it's good
A monster calls is so underrated but it's literally one of my favorite books, it's seriously beautiful, and every time I read the ending I wanna cry😂
Miss Peregrine’s was on the list? Never would have guessed that
Happy new year everyone! This is so nostalgic. I remember 10 years ago, the first YA book I read was Twilight. Say what you will about it, but I loved it as a teen. It started my love of reading YA. I was only into mystery books then, but Twilight introduced me to new genre of books.
You should try to read Made You Up by Francesca Zappia, I really liked it so I hope you like it
I feel blessed by so many Jesse videos 😍😍
In order of significance, starting from most impactful-
Tuesday's with morrie
A room of one's own
Persuation
The prophet
Never let me go
Where the rainbows end ('coz it inspired me to write emails)
The fault in our stars
Top three books
1: Six of Crows
2: The Infernal Devices
3: Throne of Glass
Oh, The Infernal Devices! I love that trilogy ✨
@@sapph_vi Yassss!
Awww, how cute we all welcomed 2020 with open arms and were ready to have an amazing time..and then it spit right into our faces.
Thank you for mentioning Six of Crows!! I love all of the other books you’ve mentioned, but six of crows will always have a special place in my heart, and Crooked Kingdoms is my all time favorite book, and therefore my favorite book of the decade. (Although I was 6 at the beginning of the decade so that’s pretty much the age when I actually started reading)
Hunger Games is definitely a close second, because at the time I read it, it was such a different kind of book than what I usually read, and a lot darker and more interesting, and it really opened my eyes to a whole new genre of books
I read the archived series/duology??? A week or two ago after hearing you RAVE about it and GIRL. I need more
Not enough people I know have read Miss Peregrine’s! It makes me so happy when you mention it :)
Not in particular order..These are my favorite books of the decade..
Harry Potter series
Percy Jackson series
Divergent
Hunger Games
Eliza and her monsters
Caraval series
The Da Vinci code
Geekerella
Night circus
Red queen
It’s like he literally thought of all my favorites! The Hunger Games was the first YA story I ever read and The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry was one of the first adult fiction novels I’d read. Although I think my favorite series of the decade would have to be Kiera Cass’ The Selection Series 😍
I haven't been reading for the past few months.. But watching your videos makes me want to read again like "damn im missing so much worlds to get in 😧"
THANK YOU
Honestly, I love it when Jesse rants about Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. It's my favorite book too. I'm totally present for that ted talk.
Can't wait to see what you will do in the next decade!
I’m living for all this content 🙌🏻
Jesse mentions the hunger games first:
Me: we are coming into this decade with the hunger games too 😭😂 can’t wait till the prequel comes out 😂
Ive read 2/3 ...im bad with series but im excited for the next one...ill finish the trilogy soon😁
Emily Glover it’s definitely worth finishing but mockingjay is the worse in the trilogy but it’s still a good read
Petra O'Connor I definitely agree with that. I love the original book with my entire being and it’s one of the only trilogies I know of where I really enjoy the sequel. The third is pretty bad ngl but I agree it’s worth reading if you enjoy the collection
Emily Glover ok this was like a couple months ago. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes sucked.
Whenever Jesse uploads a video, I take a paper and pen and am like: Yeah, I am ready. The best booktuber I know!
You have talked about Miss Peregrine's so often that I finally went out and bought the first two books. I have no regrets, thank you for the recommendation.
I believe The series gets better with each book. So try catching up so you can read the newest one coming out this year!
Long Way Down !! One of my favorite books in verse
Yesss Jason Reynolds is amazingggg
Just recently read the Hunger games. No idea why it took me so long. But I absolutely *loved* it.
I guess my all time favourite books list would be more like a favourite series list, but here goes:-
(In no particular order)
1.Percy Jackson and the Olympian series
2. Heroes of olympus series
3. Harry Potter
4. Unwind (on book 3 but omg it's definately one of my favourites)
5. Anne of green gables
6. Hunger games series
7. Legend trilogy (haven't read Rebel though)
8. The enchanted wood series (guilty pleasure!)
9. The inheritance cycle
10. The gentlemen's guide to vice and virtue
11. The book thief
Well these are just some books off the top of my head but I guess since these are the ones I remember most they probably mean the most to me.
And as usual a brillient list Jesse!
So glad I decided to read Miss Peregrine’s home for peculiar children after listening to Jessie talk about it in a video this year. It was the BEST decision and a clear 2019 favourite!
THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER IS LITERALLY LIKE MY FAVOURITE BOOK. I LOVE YOU, DUDE. YOU EXPLAINED READING IT THE BEST WAY I COULD'VE THOUGHT ABOUT. Sorry, lost my cool there for a while
Aww, we don't deserve you! Thank you for all the joy you bring to our lives ❤
I wish you a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
The hunger games are also the books that got me more into reading too
3 videos in 2 days? Yes please
