      I've the 35 f1.8 just lying around, must admit I love primes but tend not to use them, and if I do it's the sigma 85 f1.4 DG DN, so the cheaper Sony lens will do for me

    @5:51: Great video Pierra. I'd just like to add that the 24mm 1.4 and 35mm 1.4 GM lenses do not have the same coating and same linear motors as you said. The 35mm 1.4 features two XD linear motors while the 24mm 1.4 still uses the older DDSSMM autofocus system. The 35mm 1.4 also uses AR-nano-coating v2 (just like the 12-24mm 2.8 gm recently). Both feature the same fluorine coating though.
    @7:41: If you go into crop mode with an r-series model (e.g. Sony A7R III like you use) you will not get a 50mm 1.4. By cropping you reduce the depth of field. The look will resemble something very similar to a 50mm f2.
    I own the 24mm 1.4 which became my favourite travel lense but since 35mm has always been my favourite focal length I will get the 35mm additionally and keep the 24mm.

    When switching over to Sony over two years ago, there was two lenses I wanted that I did own from Canon. They were the 85mm 1.4 & 35mm 1.4. I was left disappointed that there was no GM 35mm at the time. Probably the most excited I’ve been over a Sony announcement in a good while. Great content as always :)

    Ok after watching this and every other review on all 35mms, I’ve decided to hop on BH and preorder the new 35mm 1.4. Because it’s the length I’m missing and really need most for talking segments in videos where the camera will be at a somewhat close distance, tighter spaces (where a 50mm can’t go) and without distortion from a wide angle. I was also considering the 35mm 1.8 for 1/2 the price but the chromatic aberration is a concern. Then again focus breathing on the new 35mm 1.4 in video is also a concern but not as much. There’s always trade offs, it depends how you’re planning on using it. I’m hybrid, video 1st/photo 2nd. Ultimately, whether we go for this lens or skip it, we want to build our camera kits slowly, invest in quality tools you see yourself using long into the future. And decide, which one will make the biggest positive impact on moving your mission forward? Choose that one.

    The one ergonomic feature that I wish that the 24/1.4 and 35/1.4 had is locking switch for “A” aperture mode. I'm accustomed to controller aperture in-camera rather than on the lens (esp when jumping b/w lenses with and without the aperture ring), and it's just too darn easy to accidentally switch the lens out of “A” mode when pulling it out of my bag. For a stills shooter, that is far more useful than the declicking switch...

    Very nice to see Sony finally releasing a 35mm f/1.4 G Master lens; however, I in humble opinion I still believe the new Sigma 35mm f/1.2 for Sony E mounts is better for overall sharpness.

    • @joe2snj
      @joe2snj 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From the reviews I have seen the opposite is true. The GM is sharper than the Art. Jared Polin and Cameralabs compared them.

    • @latineaux
      @latineaux 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@joe2snj Sir, you are incorrect. Please re-watch Jared's review, which he states he isn't giving up his Sigma 34mm f/1.2 lens because it is sharper and offers f/1.2 depth of field

    • @joe2snj
      @joe2snj 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@latineaux No he states the GM is sharper but he likes the f1.2 of the Art which is why he is keeping it.
      In his own comparisons it showed the GM to be sharper.
      Its no knock against Sigma, their new 85mm f1.4 beats the 85mm GM hands down for sharpness and by some distance. Even their new 105mm f2.8 Macro is sharper than the 90mm Macro G which is really saying something.

      I'd owned 35mm f1.4 ZA, to be honest 35mm might be great for mostly street photography and portrait photography, yet not quite friendly for travel photography. Cuz it's a bit too narrow to shoot building, landscape or anything you want to show the spatial feeling of. I sold my 35 Distagon and got the 25 Batis, then exchanged it to 24GM in the end. I do shoot lots of street photography, but with my 55ZA, as you don't need to get too close to people, it's easier to carry, and you don't draw attention with it's small size.

    I shoot in the Nikon dslr system the d500,d810,and d850 . Use them for live music photography and video. But I’m looking into stepping up into the video camera world and need a video system. Nikon presently doesn’t have quite have what I need . I love Nikons color and their lenses. I use a lot of Sigma lenses also and Sony e mount has plenty of those . But from what I’ve seen in the G Master line I’d stay Sony probably for most of my lenses. The price for one is comparable on the primes . Not the zooms though . I love the Sony 12-24 f/2.8 the 16-35 f/2.8 very nice wide angle zooms .
    I didn’t realize how good of optics Sony had . Oh then their 135 f/1.8 gm ooooo . And I so bad wanted to stay with Nikon . I believe today I’m going to sleep with the devil.

      I dont think so. There ist no better lense for a unique look than the Zeiss. But you will have a Sony-Replacement.

    Pierre. make a video about street photography with cheap lenses. kit lens canon, 18-135, 75-300. I think it will be very interesting, because not everyone can afford expensive lenses.

    Thanks for such detailed review, i am using Sony FX3, comparing Sony 35 1.4 GM and Sony 35 1.8 for video shooting and film making purpose only. If I don’t mind the focus breathing issue on GM, just considering the video image quality. Does these 2 lenses make any noticeable differences? Someone tell me the video image on FX3 is only 4K 10bit so on video I would hardly notice any differences, but I would like to buy GM if it does perform any better on video image quality. Thanks

    would you go 20 1.8 and 35 combo, or is just 24 good enough?

      I like a 35 but the Sony 24 seems great all round. 20 is great for vid but not flattering for faces.
