    From my experience a good box blade can do what the other 2 types do about 90% as well as they can. If you're only buying one, the box blade is most versatile.

    at the 10:50 mark when you are using the landplane if you would pull/drive in the opposite direction you would have been easily able to move material over and fill in that washout on the side of the driveway. Landplane will move a fair amount of material to fill in potholes and washouts you just have to go in the correct direction.
    Just my observation from using mine:)

    I really like the adjustable blade. Being able to offset like that is a great idea. If you would have added some angle to that all that material would have went o the middle of the road adding crown and not having the dam along side of the ditch. I like to use the "angle blade" to pull the sides then use the box blade to drag down the center to make a great road surface. BTW, the box blade packs the road bed like no other tool. The weight of the implement along with the weight of the material being pulled creates an incredibly packed layer that will hold up to weather and traffic. Also, I've been using my Branson 4720 since buying new in 2004. Sadly I lost it to a field fire yesterday. what a great tractor. It did more work than it was designed to do, more abuse, more neglect, more , more , more. What an incredible machine.

    Good Info. As you said, they all have their own special use. I have eventually accumulated all three and use them all on a regular basis. Plus the tiller & the rake & the middle buster & the ripper & the flail mower & the finish mower & the rotary mower & the boom & the auger & the carryall & the roller 😵🤑 Sorry, but once I started I just had to keep the list going just to see what I do have waiting by the barn. It's an addiction once you get started.

    Angling the scraper blade down and angling the low edge forward will make a crown on the road very easily. It cuts and pulls the dirt/gravel towards the center of the road. Cool video! 👍👍👍

      I came to write this, you almost never use the blade in the straight position. You angle the blade toward the center of the road. Run each side a couple times (which deposits all the pull in the center) then run the land plane over it and you'll have a nice crown

    Great video! Lot of good information. One questiion: how big of a tractor are you using? It looks like about 45 horsepower. Having a big enough tractor is important. The equipment rentals have tractors that are only about 30-35 horsepower and they look pretty light. I've got to do my driveway before the monsoons set in. I'm a farm kid, now grown up, and have my fair share of time on a tractor. Let's see what happens.
    I really your Will it Start videos! You and Wiley really crack me up! I also love your old farmboy creativity. That's what it takes when you're broken down in the field and have to get it done.

    That was an excellent comparison between three very useful, similar implements. I researched each of those to figure out what would be the most useful all around implement, since I can only afford one. I settled on the box blade because it can do everything the other two do, plus contain material.
    A land plane would a great addition. The scraper blade would be nice too. But for my money, a box blade is the best all around implement for those on a budget.

I've been going back and forth on a box blade or landplane. As long as my budget allows I've decided to get both. Problem solved. Ha. Also my new stuff will be homestead implements. I love everything attachments stuff and they are pretty local to me in NC but right now they have a 8 plus week lead time. So I've decided to go with homestead implements. I’d advise you to get your land plane exactly 1/2 the width of your driveway. That way you can angle it to lay a crown if you need one. If your plane is too wide it won’t run on the skids and work as efficiently.

  • @garrytalley8009
    @garrytalley8009 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video. I did see with the sand the box blade may have been a better choice. Here in Kentucky a land plane seems to do all seeing there is rocky clay like soil and I do have a very long gravel drive and a large gravel parking area around my barn as well. I do repair ruts in the drive that does not have gravel as well because of all the rock and clay the land plane just does the job better than a box blade would. The type of soil or the material you are levelling obviously have more to do with the choice than anything else.

    On your box blade, I notice you have some kinda attachment on the side, that I imagine helps keep it from digging in too deep - one of the issues I have with mine is that as it starts getting full it'll squat the tractor (it's only a 3025e), squishing the rear tires. Even though it still has enough power and traction to pull it, it'll cause uneven grading... I think some of those skids or whatever they're called might help... Any idea what they're called? I can probably make some, but it would be easier to buy some... Thanks in advance!

Got a run of 200 x 600 that is a field I'd love to level out...but it's got a ton of rock in the soil. I think the box blade will be best as an "all in one" because ultimately I'd like to de-rock the topsoil and just put some bermuda down.

  • @bman6502
    @bman6502 ปีที่แล้ว

    My two cents; weight is your friend, the heaver, the better. Get one wider than your rear wheels, you’ll be able to put the scraper right up against stuff whiteout tires causing issues… and get hydraulic top and bottom links.. I realize the rear hydraulics are pricey but in my opinion one of the best investments you can make.. it changes the game and what you can do with a box scraper…

    Great video! I currently have a box blade for my JD 3025E and it works well for many projects around our homestead here in the deserts of South Eastern Arizona. But I am needing an attachment for removal of sand that accumulates after monsoons storms and road flooding. We end up with an extra 6-8 inches of sand on top of our dirt roads brought in by washes flooding the road. The box blade will move the sand but it's real slow going. I was thinking of a rear blade that will act almost like a snow plow to move the sand off to the side of the road. Any suggestions you might have would be much appreciated.

    • @HamiltonvilleFarm
      @HamiltonvilleFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You aren't getting a good crown with the land plane because you aren't exactly using it properly. The LEFT side of the plane always goes down the CENTER of the driveway, the blades are mounted at an angle in order for it to pull gravel up at the edge of the driveway and distribute it evenly from RIGHT to LEFT. Your second pass up the driveway was going the wrong way, you should have been driving back down towards the gate. All you succeeded in doing was flattening the crown you had built up from the first pass.

    Hank for a more aggressive dig with a rear blade, modify you setup in a couple of ways.
    1) angle your blade with the cutting edge closer to the tractor rear tire, in addition to the slant down on that side.
    2) set the cutting (low edge) in line with the rear tire.
    Now on each additional pass if wanting a deeper ditch, drive with your rear tire in the ditch you cut on the previous pass and you will dig deeper as your tractor is at an angle so you increased your blade slant by having that side of the tractor lower.

    If you have a steep up and down driveway with gravel, which one would be better? I was wondering if the box blade would be better to carry/move loose gravel back up on the steep part of the driveway or does the land plane do just as good relocating stone up hill?

    • @HamiltonvilleFarm
      @HamiltonvilleFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. If you wanna carry spoils use a box blade. The landplane won’t carry the stone for you 👍

    Great video Hank. It's great to see what modern tractors and readily available attachments can do at a small harm or homestead.
    I plan to purchase 10 acres in FL next year. For now, I'm investigating the area around Dunnellon, Crystal River. I'm looking forward to getting me a tractor, some attachments and put them to work developing the land for a homestead.

      When you buy the rear blade, buy one that has both tilt and angle capabilities. Not like the one shown on this video. Adjust the tilt, then use the 3 point turnbuckle for fine adjustment if needed. You'll thank yourself if you ever have to reestablish old silted up ditches.
