  • Imagine, if you will, the 1940s, especially the war years, farming was an essential business activity. Rationing was the rule of the day. So what better way would there be to process grain bundles into merchantable grain than with available period equipment. In this instance, a 1911 36 x 58 inch Case separator powered by as 1915 steam traction engine. The separator is fitted with Garden City feeder and grain weighing/counting equipment. Ignoring a few modern vehicles and some non-period clothing, the subjects of this video could easily have been seen in the 1940s. Requiring no refined fuels, steam power still proves its usefulness. Net take from the day was about 200 bushels of oats.

Wish I had known about this. I would have been there with ice cream, margaritas, or both!

Very nice. I learned to fire on a 10 HP Case traction engine which was similar to the Altman. On coal no less.

So awesome. Love the old machinery. I grew up with neighbors who operated this stuff as their livelihood. Some of these machines sat in their barns unused for years. I remember one old timer reference a steam engine to plow he said , “it was a nice steady pull.” That has stayed with me. He gave me a couple Indian arrow heads he found plowing.-James from northern Ohio.

Not many in north Texas want to go to this much trouble. For most it is little more than work.

Great looking setup with the Aultman-Taylor. I finally got my first chance to thresh last year with our 16-48 Russell and Case thresher. Before then, I'd just run engines around and belted up the 22 HP Advance-Rumely Universal to the Baker fan.

Interesting they didn't use the bagging fittings on the dual grain bagging chute, just ran it into a trailer.
