    You saved my butt. I put this together and thought the seller had sent the wrong part. I saw the three raised pieces on the bowl lip where the tank mounted up to the bowl. I thought the base was for another model. I read the instructions on how the tank meets 3 spots on the bowl base. I still didn't think it was the right part. I saw your vid and it showed everything and those 3 raised points on the lip were the 3 points of contact per instructions. First time installing a Toto. Thanks for the vid

    Thank you for this! The part I couldn't understand without the help of this video is that the porcelain of the tank and porcelain of the bowl actually end up touching... but just barely. Those of us who will only do this a few times in our lives have to be extra careful with this part!
    I made sure the bathroom was totally quiet and just did quarter turns on the nut as the porcelain got close to touching. I also rocked the tank forward a little as I tightened. The moment it stopped rocking I stopped turning the nut. All is well so far.

      @@PlumbingExplained Chris - I noticed my recently installed Toto Drake fills the bowl to the expected water level upon flushing, but then shortly after, the water level in the bowl goes down by about 2 inches. The fill tube is connected properly in the tank, so water is filling the tube and not the tank upon flushing. I have no leaks around the floor, so hopefully not a crack in the bowl. Could this be a faulty flapper on a new commode? Thanks for any advice you can lend on the matter.

    Great video with VERY helpful hints - thanks SO much! Up here in the Great White North (Montreal - so, good news, your channel is going international LOL) we are allowed to use higher GPF toilets - definitely getting a TOTO but wondering if you have any thoughts about the Toto 1.28 Drake versus the 1.6 GPF Drake - yes more water per flush but does that automatically mean a BETTER flush?!
    I imagine the actual TANK is slightly bigger or does a little of the extra water reside in the bowl itself - many thanks!!!

    • @PlumbingExplained
      @PlumbingExplained  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s all in the flapper / flush valve design that allows more water to drop when flushed, other than that I believe maybe slightly less water in the bowl it’s been a while since I’ve had a 1.6 to compare the two but if I had the ability to choose I’d go with the 1.6 over the 1.28s only because the higher volume of water ensures solids aren’t going to get stuck in the drain line, the 1.28s still flush great and it’s very rare I get a call out to a house with Toto toilets that are clogging or causing clogs in the drain line and out of those rare times it’s even more rare that it’s actually the toilets fault and not user or installer error

    • @PlumbingExplained
      @PlumbingExplained  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yikes The workers at Toto should know better before giving out bad information like that. Your toilet will not flush correctly if you don’t put the fill tube inside the flush valve, that’s what fills the bowl up with the proper amount of water so it flushes properly, if you do it the way this person at Toto said you will have to hold the handle down for it to flush it won’t flush how it was designed by Toto to flush. Did you get a name of the person?

    Do you always use a double wax ring or was that because it was recessed into the ground? Thanks.

    • @PlumbingExplained
      @PlumbingExplained  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I always try and double wax unless the flange is above the floor then I’ll use a single wax but I had a situation years ago where the flange was level with the floor not above just level, I used 1 wax ring and exactly 1 year later I was back for another toilet base leak and it was because the ground had settled slightly. So I double wax every time now no matter what.

    FYI if you are on well water run away from toto and corky fill valves and immediately change them out for fluidmaster. They get gummed up in a few months and start running due to algae buildup in the tank. Well water has no bleach added. As far as the toto drake I had to replace all of mine with 40 year old 5 gallon per flush American Standards. They were using 16 to 20 gallons per flush. Had to be flushed 10-12 times to evacuate waste. The old school toilets only required one flush at 5 gallons to evacuate all waste. Low flow plumbing is an absolute scam.

    Nice video but the wax ring ( gasket) goes on the bottom of the toilet not on the toilet flange. Look at the directions on the box the wax ring came out of .
    The reason is with it on the flange as you set the toilet the wax can squeeze out in both directions, inward it interrupts the flow of waste water.
    Also we have always grouted our toilets with tile grout. Not caulk.

    • @PlumbingExplained
      @PlumbingExplained  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I respect your opinion but I completely disagree with it, There are memes about handymen installing toilets the way you are describing and in 20 years I’ve never once seen the wax squeeze into the drain line when the toilet is set properly(the way I do it) nor have I ever seen a licensed plumber set the ring on the toilet like that or recommend it be done that way. Keep on Plumbing though brother.
      P.s Code in my area requires the toilets be calked in, calk can be cleaned much easier than grout also. I think you’ve been a licensed contractor 40 years not a licensed plumber.

      Grouting a toilet? I am almost certain that is against health code regulations how are you going to clean that properly? Also grout cracks way worse than caulk, I’m amazed by this comment. I live on the east coast as well and never seen a toilet grouted even when I visited Florida I’m pretty sure you are not practicing correctly sir not trying to judge but I’m almost certain that is not correct.

    Do yourself a favor and don’t do what this guy did by stacking 2 wax rings. Do it right, get an Oatey flange extender kit and get the flange to the right height. (The flange should set on top of the finished floor.) The kit literally cost a few more dollars than the 2nd wax ring and takes minutes to install. Never install a toilet on a flange that is below floor level. It’s going to cost you thousands of dollars when this thing starts leaking and destroys your subfloor.
