To keep the squash bug away, I experimented with planting mint tea at the base of my squash plants last year with great success. The only problem is that the mint tea tends to travel and must be contained. I believe the mint tea smell confuses the squash bugs. I'm going to try this experiment again this year to confirm this experiment.
You're correct about the mint smell confusing the pests. I love this kind of pest control. I've also heard of planting a clove of garlic in and around the plants and also those small onion bulbs/sets (these would be separate from what you want to grow to eat). also marigold, calendula and nasturtium flowers inter planted work to deter unwanted pests. maybe grow the mint in a contained area/container and use cuttings for mulch around your plants. mint wants to take over, that's for sure! happy growing.
That does work. I use peppermint spray all over and sell it for that.

I made the mistake of using old chicken bedding to put into my garden beds. The chickens used to be given the kitchen scraps to dig through. We apparently did not get cold enough to kill those kitchen scrap seeds. We now have squashes, melons, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and some familiar but so far unidentifiable plants anywhere and everywhere that the chicken bedding was placed. We have had ridiculously inconsistent temperatures so far, so while we have a ton of plants, there isn't even a hint of flowers yet.
a compost pile is supposed to heat up hot enough to kill seeds so next time compost it in a sunny spot. Pile it up 3 to 4 feet.

Just saw a video where the TX lady injected standard Bt liquid mix right into the main stem of her Zucchini plants via syringe. Went from flat out dying to thriving in less than 2.days. Others had great success by mixing Bt corncob bits into soil .. Or by spraying that liquid and/or neem oil solution at base of plant, not leaves. Sure worth a try. GM.bugs a scourge upon the world right now. All squash taking a beating.
My squashed are growing super fast this year. Not as fast as yours production wise, but there are several squash on the plants and the plants are massive already.
Yeah this warm no rain June has added to growth.

Thanks Gary. Any recommendations on where to prune squash leaves? I just came from the garden and found a stem that had been split open about a week ago, filled with eggs and a few insects. Is it best to prune leaves at the junction of the stem and leaf, which leaves a solid nub on the stem, or to prune the leaf stem close to the stem of the plant? Pruning close to the plant stem leaves a hole which invites insects into the plant. Same thing if you cut the leaf stem away from the leaf, because the leaf stem is hollow. I'm also concerned that any kind of leaf pruning gives off an odor that can attract insects to the plant.
I have done both. I like to prune closer to the leaf now days to remove it but leave the stem with no hole. I am not sure it really matters to be honest. The odor is true. But leaves get damaged. Bugs now how to do their thing. So rarely is the issue what we did.

Can i put 1 squash plant in a huge
Hi there,
I like to know what amount of spacing is required between the individual squash / zucchini when first planting and if this differs when 1st planting in containers
close together when they are 1st started off because of lack of seed space at that time and if they jump quickly in growing can they be safely transplanted to a larger growth area

Space of 3 feet between plants is minimum in ground. In a container 1 per 20 gallon container. They need space. You disturb a lot of roots with plants growing next to each other when you move them. It can be done but slows plant. Best to just plant 2 seeds where you want them and thin to 1 plant. Or start them in small pots and transplant.

Do you find just scraping squash eggs off the leaf destroys them? No need to take them off with tape? Also, when watering one only needs to water the main root? Or do I need to water under the entire vine?
Might be when you get them but most times, they scrape and fall to the ground kills them. They dry, get eaten and really need the leaf.

Gary, (or anyone!) any idea what makes females turn yellow and die off when about an inch long, before flowers have even formed enough to open? Not lack of pollination at that point. Weather has been stable. In 20 gallon pots. I have researched to no avail. Any chance it’s a water issue? I’m so frustrated!

For the squashes that didn’t get fertilized, do you let them grow or cut them off?
The will eventually die off but you should remove them

I know what you mean about not wanting to kill a viable plant. Can you transplant them into containers and give them away?
@@inthetwinklingofaneye I was wondering the same thing because I have 10 fruiting and started another 10 a week or 2 ago 😁. I'm hoping that if I transplant them it doesn't hurt the roots 🤷♂️
@@limitless007 wow! you'd need a decent size container, but it's something I would try if it was me. maybe get a dehydrator. I sure want one, because once those zucchini start producing, I'm always overwhelmed, because it's just me and a couple of cats! lots of uses for dehydrated zucchini, not sure what all, but in soups, breads, pizzas for sure. let me know how it turns out, if you get a minute and remember! happy growing.

QUESTION - the squash vine borer lays eggs on the stem and they hatch into a grub-looking things that eat into the vine so how come a grub killer can't be used on the vine to kill them?
It can. But insect dust is the form to use it in. You would cover a lot of the stem. Some people do that.

What about DE? Is that the same dust?
I think he's talking about a dust containing spinosad. DE, diatomaceous earth, isn't poisonous like spinosad is. DE scrapes the insects body and drys them out. I haven't found it to be effective on squash bugs.
@@DahVoozel I love DE for fleas and ants. I had a horrible ant infestation in one of my raised beds last year. DE was what finally worked. Be aware it also kills good insects. so it should be used sparingly and carefully. interplanting cloves of garlic, onion sets, marigolds, calendula and nasturtium also work as pest deterrents. I'm always experimenting. happy growing.
No. DE is silica but it is dust. Insect dust has chemical killers organic or not organic. Something added that kills.

Hi Gary! I live in Southern California. I have a healthy crooked neck squash, however, in the past 2 days white flies have arrived on the plant. I have sprayed Calikim's neem recipe but these guys are still hanging around. Any recommendations?
They are tough! I usually have spray a couple times and sometimes they beat me. I am leaning toward chemical spray for whiteflies on stuff I can easily wash like squash. But they often require self neem sprays. If you want to chance it, increasing the oil helps too. It sticks on them.

I use spinosad on the bugs that neem doesnt kill, I prefer it its safer and it also kills the bugs better. I use it on aphids that literally shrug off neem like its nothing. Also good for corn worms.

We are getting a ton of rain this week and next week. My zucchino rampicante squash picked now to produce a ton of female flowers but only one or two male flowers. Pollinators are hiding from the rain, so I tried hand pollinating during a very short break in the rain showers. Can pollen be too wet to hand pollinate? I suppose I will know in a few days, but wondered if you have tried it in similar circumstances.
I am not sure but you would most likely want it dry so it floats and moves easily around.

yes! they will die anyway if you leave them. I could be wrong, but I don't think there's any use for them if they're not pollinated.

Folks, we are overrun with Aphids in the garden. They are on everything. I’ve used Neem oil, insecticidal soap using peppermint oil and mint, i’ve used insect dust, Pyrethrin (which seemed to decrease the infestation by a third or so) but the Aphids still are all over my plants. They especially are on my tomatoes and my leafy greens. I picked up ladybugs early in the season, but they must have flown away. Does anyone have a remedy?
Also, every year we fight with fungal diseases on the leaves of nearly all our plants. Does anyone use copper spray or some other technique? I’ve used hydrogen peroxide on my tomatoes with decent results, but does not seem to work on everything.
I appreciate any assistance. 🙏
So that stinks. I have use copper in the past but not for everything. You can increase h202 between 4-8 ounces per gallon. You can even push passed that but there is risk of leaf damage. However, you could learn a ratio that is more effective. For aphids, late evening, almost dark, a spray of a strong chemical spray might be needed for infestations. Personal choice but a late spraying helps not contact good insects.

When found young the cant survive scrapped and dropped but when near hatching they are stronger. But popping and removing is best practice.

Do you have to smash the eggs or just remove them from the leaf? No need to remove the leaf??
Just rub the eggs off, dap them with oil, or use tape to remove them. A lot of people like to take them out of the garden. I feel nature takes are of them on the ground, otherwise, the would just be laid on the ground.

so the last 3 years, I have been battling the vine borer. I don't hear that discussed here, but I have seen that using BT in a syringe injected into the vine will kill them.. I am trying that and crossing my fingers, hoping it will work. I get 5-7 squash per plant before they die off, all the while battling the dreaded squash bugs. Lots of people swear by injecting the BT. It's organic too. hope it works!!
I use dust on the stems. I have talked about treating them before but you are doing one of the common suggestions that can work. There is just no great solution. Replanting really is a good way to go. You plant through their life cycle.

growing vertically does help, for sure, as its easier to see what going on with your plants. Gary has talked about this.
another method is to grow the vine on the ground and keep piling soil on the joints of the vine so it roots in all along the vine... that way if the vine borer kills off part of the vine, part of it will still survive. I've done it. It lengthens the life of the vine but in the end the borer always wins in my garden.
You can. Some are more bush type and others vine. I have trained them up.

Vertical growing is wonderful for saving space and seeing more of what is going on with your plants!
@@countryroads190 I find it also helps a ton with polination. The insects can see the flowers well. T posts and zip ties or inverted tomato cages work extremely well for those interested.

Won’t the squash bug eggs still hatch in the dirt when you brush them off the leaf?
Not sure, but I think the eggs get nutrients from leaves. Without the leaves they might just die off.

To combat vine borers this year, I got Sevin dust and have used 2x this season. The bottle says to not use more than 5x a season. How do I have any success with the dust if it rinses off very quickly, either with rain or watering, if I can only use 5x? Hope this makes sense-thank you for all your great advice!

I made a comment about injecting bt with a syringe into the vine. Been seeing all over on channels that this is the only way to get them to die before they destroy the plant. trying it for the first time myself. Fingers crossed.
