    Your garden is looking so great. Love your tours. I hope to catch up soon. The weather is slowly cooperating. Harvested garlic today, finally. Only planted it in October, geez! I’ll be growing a lot more elephant garlic, some are massive. The best roasted garlic for sure. Thanks 😊

    I read somewhere that rosemary (or rosemary oil) can also deter flea beetles. They were getting at one of my young tomato plants badly. I was trimming up an overwintered rosemary that looked a woody fright and decided I’d just sprinkle the trimmings around that struggling tomato plant. It seems to have worked. All the new leaves are free of holes and the plant is thriving and I was able to remove the damaged early leaves. Have you heard of this with rosemary? I’m a bit stunned by how well it worked.

      I sell rosemary oil as it does deter. I actually use a rosemary and peppermint combo often

      I bought the uncoated on Amazon for cheap. Walgreens may have some, too. The problem with the coated aspirins is that it can clog a fine sprayer. The uncoated dissolve very quickly.

    I'm trying to plan out my spraying and fertilizing schedule. A question I have is...should you spray the peroxide spray, baking soda spray and peppermint spray all on the same day? I'm showing signs of a slight fungal problem on my tomatoes and the leaf foot bugs have shown up. Can I spray the aspirin and peroxide and peppermint sprays all on the same day or should I space them out?

    • @pamelalow8475

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. And its a hard question to answer. Peppermint oil, any time. It can be used same day as other. H202 alone and not mixed with other stuff. Aspirin really anytime.

    Hello! Love wandering your garden! It's SO lush, green, AND productive!!! I only hope to get there!! If I could offer you a suggestion to protect your blueberries from the birds. Another fabric, tulle, works SO much better than bird netting. The holes are much smaller, so the berries cannot pop thru it, AND a bonus is, the birds don't get stuck in it. They don't even like landing on it. You can purchase on eBay, 40 yards, 54 inches wide for around $10. I did a test last year and put it on 4 of my plants. It was a game changer. No loss at all!! So this year I will be putting it on all 14 of my plants!! I use clothes pins to attach and that makes it easy to access when it is picking time. Hope this helps!!

    • @highlandscommunityclub1160
      @highlandscommunityclub1160 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m a tulle believer, too! Works great for all kinds of animals. I’ll be putting it on my dwarf peach tree to keep the squirrels from nabbing the fruit.

    • @eileenbartnick7202

      @@highlandscommunityclub1160 that will work perfectly!! This year I made drawstring pouches to use on my bunches of grapes, too! So maybe I will get to enjoy some of my grapes instead of giving them all to the birds 😂 !!!

    I looked into rosemary oil when you mentioned it in a previous video. At least in Canada, rosemary oil is comically expensive compared to neem oil. It's not close for how much you get. Peppermint wasn't any better, really I thought either.

    I had to wait until 1/2 way in to hear about the aspirin. then I hear, ‘I won’t talk about it in this video’. I wish there was a time mark for each topic in the video. I am new to gardening and am eager to learn what I need to do to make my plants stronger or protect them. This had to be one of the longer winded videos.

I might have to do what I did last year for other plants, I bought plastic forks and put them around the plants with the tines facing out. I wasn't clear probably. If you know disease shows regularly, its going to come. So I do spray preventatively. So even if you dont have tomato issues but leaf spot comes. Spray. And during the time the fungus is viable. No need to spray April May or September here for example.

    I have a beef stake tomato plant, growing in a grow bag, that looks as if it is on steroids. It is over six feet tall, branches at least four feet wide, covered with tomatoes, and still growing and putting out new flowers. Any taller, and I will have to use a ladder to tend to it. It has blocked me from using the row, between plantings, so I have to go behind it to water and fertilize it. So far, my biggest problems are grubs, beetles, and horned worms. Earlier today, I dug up at least 100 grubs while harvesting potatoes, picked three horned worms off my tomato plants, and fed them to the fish in my pond. Did you know that horned worms are carneverous? The big ones will eat the smaller ones when they are hungry. They are always hungry.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

    Hi newer subscriber here! Love your channel. I have definitely learned a lot from your videos as a new gardener. I do have a question if you are able to answer. I am growing two canary melon plants vertically in grow bags (first time growing these). One plant is darker green in color with a lot of growth. However, that one has some crispy leaves and some markings. The other plant has less vine growth, but has a small fruit developing. This specific plant is much lighter in color and it's older leaves are turned up slightly. Would you say the lighter green plant needs more magnesium or another nutrient? I have given them a granular fertilizer (monthly) and a liquid kelp fertilizer weekly. I have also given them worm castings. Thank you!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much. Well its probably not magnesium. In containers the roots are pretty much getting the same fertilizer unless you really change things pot to pot. Kelp isn't great, it low in many things. Its a nice addition. I would go with agrothrive or fish emulsion for your weekly water soluble fertilizer. I have agrothrive link in this video or I typically buy Alaska brand fish emulsion. Most likely you need more available nitrogen.

    I'm having a problem with pollinators in my garden. I haven't been seeing any honey bees and very few of any other kind of bee. I have two tomatillo plants that are cover in flowers and nothing is getting pollinated. With a tomato plant I'd just go outside and shake the bushes and that would be enough. With the tomatillos they have to cross pollinate between two plants and I don't want to try the paint brush hand pollinating but I might have yo.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN

      You should plant lavender near your garden area. They are pollinator attractors. I used to have the same issue until I did this. Now, every morning and throughout the day, my garden is full of honey bees and bumble bees. Almost 100 percent pollination. They don’t need fertilizers or much water.

    • @sharontahir9694
      @sharontahir9694 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I've had to do that too. This week my cucumbers have all female flowers and no males. I don't want to do that with the tomatillos though as they are two plants that are separated by another plant. They have to cross pollinate between both plants, not just flowers on one plant. If I have to be the bee for everything, I don't have that kind of time. I used to have tons of bees but not any more. 😢
