I love your garden rambling videos! There are so many videos online with picture perfect gardens that are far from ideal for 99.99% of us. Your authencentity is unmatched and its very reassuring for us normal gardeners!
I enjoy watching this.... I think it is so important to evaluate what is working and what needs to be improved upon in the garden. Things can change so quickly. Gardening is never a stagnant process, theres always something to be done. It certainly keeps you on your toes!

Love your garden. Sorry for the plants not making it - good lessons for your audience. Thank goodness it rained. Rain isn't perfect, doesn't get under the plants to the soil very well, but much better than nothing. You still have the best peppers! 🫑🫑🫑

I love seeing your garden, the good and bad. It helps to know not everything works out as intended and it's ok to pull something up and replant. Succession planting too is such a great idea and new to me. You give lots of practical advice I latch on to, it's appreciated. Garden looks good. This is what a garden looks like in the summer ❤. Ive heard the fires are having issues with the enviroment everywhere.ive noticed my tom plants are not as tall as previous years. Problems with plants growing.

Gary, My peach trees have suffered now for two seasons from shot hole blight, some kind of fungus that creates a shotgun like pattern of holes in the leaves are yellow and full off nearly 2/3 of all the leaves have fallen off my tree, and it’s only July. The fruit looks good, but I have been spraying copper since early spring. I guess I was not able to fight this disease off. I’m going to do as you said, in spray in the fall when the leaves drop hopefully that helps. Please continue posting as you learn how to manage your fruit trees. I was dealing with apple rust, and some other kind of fungus on my blueberries, but the copper spray seems to have beaten those diseases back, however, my peach trees are truly a challenge.
Yep on the fall spraying. I figured I'll follow the experts advice for copper as that seems to treat a lot. Dormant oil for smothering stuff too. But regularly routine starts full-time this fall. Along with better pruning.

I know this might sound strange, but I'd love to come and weed your garden. :P. Thank you for showing the beat up parts of your garden and giving us the 'real' side of gardening. Oh to have that much space! Thanks to you, Gary, I've eaten 3 cucumbers so far in the past few weeks. I wish my cucumber plant was more prolific, but I'll take it and learn for next year.

I've been growing tomatoes in fabric containers for the last 4 years, and I've realised that tomatoes and fabric containers are simply not good friends - especially in hot weather. So I buried my fabric containers in the soil halfway up, and the plants did MUCH better. So rather grow tomatoes directly in the soil if you have the space, and leave the pots for crops that do well in them.
every year i plant my garden knowing I am going to neglect it when camping season begins and every year i come home to dried up wilty plants but we have to make our choices in life and the plants usually revive allbeit with some blossom end rot,,,, its worth it to wake up on a pristine alpine lake listening to nothing but wind rustling through the treetops and loons crying on the water
For the most part, The Garden is Good; I would like to have such a nice Garden. My Zucchini is starting to flower, as a some of my Tomatoes... others are still growing. Thank you for your vids :-)
QUESTION: when you say you spray before you left, are you talking about different sprays or hydrogen peroxide or something else? You mentioned you sprayed your beans and other plants just curious which sprays you use on which plants
I have the same question for you, Gary. Which spray(s) is your “scheduled spray” during the summer?
BTW, I did my aspirin spray on my tomatoes last week and tried adding baking soda to the mix since I’ve started seeing some fungal spots. I’m not sure of it was the baking soda or our 83 degree temps, but the next day the tips of the large indeterminate tomatoes were turning black and curling. I quickly rinsed off the foliage on all my bushes and they seem to be doing OK. Have you had a similar experience?
It's been rainy and cooler than normal here, so everything is behind. I had to plant new cucumber seeds in the ground because my transplants were stunted. The zuchinni wasn't moving, either, so I put in a new seed and it's as big as my transplant. It's just this weather. I have my tomatoes under a covered hoop tunnel, and they recently took off, looking lovely.
My winter squash plant looks yellowish. Still producing flowers and fruit. I don't see and bore holes, so maybe it's too much water.
One pumpkin is growing like wildfire, the rest are taking their time. I discovered squash vine borer traps work great, but I also have to capture them with a jar and have removed a ton of eggs under the branches. The SVB adults have really slowed down. Now I will inject Spinosad into the plant, in case I missed any eggs, plus I buried segments for new roots. I found my first squash bug today.. he gone.
Highly recommend Surround Kaolin Clay on all fruit trees and I mix my own pest control BT, Cold Pressed Neem Oil, Malathion, Pyrethrin and Spinosad.. I mix all of that with Castile Peppermint Soap in 1 gallon sprayer and spray bi weekly… also copper fungicide and wetable sulfur

Zucchini: "We already talked about this guy - he's done". (Sorry - I had to laugh 😉) The twisty leaved tomato - I have a couple with similar that I am assessing. It wouldn't be uncommon to have some herbicide drift - since I am in town and my neighbors LOVE to spray. The bottom leaves are fine and they are loaded with fruit that look great. BUT - this may be the year I have something else. I've been lucky so far. So we'll see. LOVE The rambles, as you know - thank you.

I moved to a property with mature peach trees that looked just like your nectarines when they put out fruit. I have been spraying them with copper for 3 years now and this is the first year they looked good enough to harvest (but the fruit was small and the squirrels got most of it). I also have to spray with an organic fruit tree spray for insect pests. The insects will spread the mold spores on the tree faster if they are not under control. I'm also still learning to manage our fruit trees and would be very interested in learning how you fertilize your trees. I used fertilizer spikes for fruit trees the last couple years but I feel like they were not very effective as the fruit is still very small when it matures. The ground in my fruit orchard is heavy red clay, so I wonder if another method of fertilizer would be better or if I should try to bring in better soil for the base of the trees?
No fertilizing right now to be honest. They are liking the earth here. Copper starts regularly this fall in my garden.

We've got the brown rot, as well. It's awful on our big Old peach tree. The previous homeowners planted rhododendron under the
peach tree. That tree can't be sprayed in Spring, because of the pollinators visiting the rhododendron. How do you spray a tree located in the garden, particularly when using insecticide. Our fruit trees are 30 yards from our vegetable and pollinator gardens. I cover portions of the garden when spraying.

Hello Gary, have a look at Stefan Sobkowiak's, from Miracle Farm, use of whey as a great fungicidal spray. He has a permaculture orchard here in Quebec and also teaches. I've used the whey and IT WORKS!! Its also a foliar spray, so 2 in 1 bonus.

Can you put the rotten cabbage in your compost pile or does it go in the garbage?
You should never put anything in your compost that has a toxicity, deficiency, or infestation. People rarely are able to reach the mesophilic stage of composting that is responsible for killing off pathogens, viruses and seedlings. Bag and throw away, or burn.
It's actually called middle mesophilic stage, after the thermophilc stage, where temperatures reach up to 70°C. temps drop, allowing re-establishment of heat resistant microbes to colonize again.
The squirrels have been in my Greenstalk and are now eyeing my tomatoes. Any tips of keeping squirrels away in rail planters?
Question- Pest/critters are eating my potato plant tops. Will they still form? They killed my prairie blush potatoes. I still got a few small ones and they were yummy..
Potato tops can take like 50% damage and the potatoes do okay. I would try and insect dust on them to slow them down.

Garden looks great...that cucumber could possibly have bacterial wilt. I have a lot of problems with that here in zone 6

The zucchini looks like classic vine borer damage. Did you inspect the root system at ground level and find a grub?

In a sense it would, but you'd have to apply during flower, which would prevent pollinators, which would limit on fruit production. Pathogens gain access to fruiting trees through the flower and fresh prune cuts.

I had that leaf twisting on some of my tomatoes too. I'm wondering if it was due to the crazy drought we had in June (also in zone 7).

What variety of blueberries do you grow ?

QUESTION I am training my zucchini vertical, I’ve had a very good harvest so far, but now my new female flowers forming are yellow and shriveled before they even open. I understand poor germination but when they’re small yellow and shriveled before the flowers open I don’t understand what’s going on. Plenty of water and I thought plenty of fertilizer anything else I can do?
I forgot to mention they are in containers so I realize more fertilizer / compost and water needed

I'm picking yard long and Rattlesnake pole beans nearly every day. My cucumbers are going strong, and the Lemon Cukes are producing cray fast. Most of my pepper plants have fruit on them, and the New Zealand spinach is still growing crazy fast. My Sweeet Dumpling Squash is about done. I'm waiting for one squash to ripen, then I'm pulling it. I'm not impressed with it, so won't be growing it again. The Burgess Buttercup has done very well, decent size and quantity. My Baby Butternut, zucchini, Lemon Squash, and White Scallop Squash are still going strong. However, my Yellow Scallop didn't do well. I'll be removing it in a few days, and probably won't replant it too. Next year I will increase the number of zucchini and White Scallop squash, replant Burgess Buttercup, and add cantaloupe, and Sugar Baby watermelon to the garden. I'm very happy with the yard long and Rattlesnake beans. I will be regrowing pole beans next year, probably more rattlesnake beans and I want to try red noodle beans. I'm working on sowing transplants for Hilton and Late Nagasaki cabbage. Next week, I will be direct sowing seeds for Danvers, turnips, and rutabagas. First I need to top the raised beds with compost, and harvest out and remove one Scarlet Russian Kale plant to make room. The plant has gotten so large, it takes up half of an 4ft x 8ft raised bed. That will leave one growing. I'll replant two more in the spring.

Oh Gary, my poblanos pasilla bajio, red cherry hots and yellow scotch bonnet all doing well in 5 gallon buckets two in each some are over 3ft tall. I have 7 varieties total 17 plants just couldn't afford to discard any of my seedlings😊👍New Jersey zone 7 garden state😊
You can grow full size pepper plants in 2-3 gallon containers. My shishitos seem to not care between #2 nursery, #3 nursery or a true 5 gallon grow bag. Only difference is watering. I downgraded my poblano to 3 gallon from 5 gallon this year and since they grow much larger it is a bit smaller bot not "bonzai like" at all.
The spray you did before going to Tennessee would not have effected brown rot infection. To control the brown rot, you have to make the fungicides sprays before and just after bud break in early spring.
What do you do for leafhoppers? They are bad this year 😢
Im in Maryland 7a with similar weather, and 1-2 of my cucumbers have been impacted by disease too (guessing some form of blight, based on the leaves), whereas the others in the same patch are okay. I can pull them, but is there also any spray you recommend that's still safe to use in the hot weather? We've been consistently hitting 90F every day, so I've been worried about leaf burn. Thanks!

My onions dont look like they are forming bulbs, only scallions. Im giving them more time. I dont know if they will grow in the clay. I have some in grow bags and its the same.
The varieties can matter and onion bulbing is based on how long your summer days are. Look up onion growing zones.

Gary- can you do a video or send me an email about your deer fencing ? I’m buying property and the prior owners have been feeding the deer and said none of the neighbors gardens can survive. I have to have a garden so I need to know how tall and specifics hw to build the right fence v
I might have a fencing video but this is 4 feet tall but has 6 foot posts in the sections. That was in case I needed to raise the fence. They dont jump in. The trick is to put beds and such on the inside again the fence. Deer dont want to jump over something and break a leg.

Sorry about your peach trees Gary, hope they revive and do better. My royal burgundy beans not doing well this year lot of spots on the leaves sowed lots of seeds but they didn't grow, however the Kentucky wonder pole beans are doing well. Getting ready to plant my second round of potatoes. I have sugar baby and honeydew melons, tomatoes, eggplants, okra, blueberries squash, pumpkins, onions, cucumbers, swiss chard,ginger are all doing good and this is the first year I've been successful at growing beets because I took your instructions and spaced the seedlings out in the the garden after they reached a certain size. No more direct sowing for me it doesn't work. Thanks Gary😊👍

Peppermint spray is great on spider mites. I sell it but where ever you buy it you want 100% extract mentha piperita.

Celery can you speak more about it? It's my first year growing it, and I rarely see videos about it.
Well I do start them indoors and they go out in the spring. I think I have celery video if you search. But not much more to be honest then an area with a little shade to stay color and I let them go. I'll put it on my list for future videos.
