Fender Rumble is always a great, reliable and consistent , but the Boss Katana Bass Amp is really amazing with great tone, thump and versatility for the price point, definitely getting the Boss.

if someone could scrape up an extra $100 I'd strongly suggest getting the rumble 40w as a least for a first amp choice as when it's time to jam with others you'll have the beef ready.

Same here... I was shocked by its versatility and how much more refined its tone is compared to comparably priced combos such as the Fender Rumble, GK MB Series, Ampeg Rocket Bass, Acoustic, etc. The only thing I don't like is that 2 10" speakers won't function when using an extension cabinet... it's either or, not both.

    • @jdigory
      @jdigory 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@marcoanello891 Yeah, there are a few confusing choices made, I must say. I purchased the 110 and it’s very awesome, but lacks any speaker out and both versions should really have Wi-Fi included. I mean come on just include it in the price please. Out of stock at many big online stores so I have to wait to dig deeper into the editing side.
I don’t really understand these choices for the amp design, but otherwise so far I’m in love.

As a guitar player that has played bass as well in bar bands, I think I would want to stick with the Rumble. Straight forward, no messing around, and proven work horse. I am however a big fan of the Katana guitar amps range which have worked well for me in bar gigs. I could see the Katana bass ranger preferred by studio and experimental guys. Most bass effects just get lost in the sound in a live setting. I do not own a Rumble, but know from other guys in the business, and definitely would be interested in getting one.

I currently own a Rumble 100 and don't see the Boss as much of an upgrade. I have never had any issue with the tones I can get out of the Fender (no matter what kind of style I am playing) including a very useful overdrive, and as far as effects goes, I see modelling amps as a false economy unless you think you will keep that amp forever because as soon as you switch to another amp, you lose those effects. I would much rather stay with the model of having a separate amp and pedal board/ FX unit combination so that if I want to use another amp, I don't have to buy everything new at the same time (and then work out how to get the best out of them).

I have a Fender Rumble 100 and I absolutely Love-it. Nice big, full, deep Sound = "Without breaking my back" or "Getting a Hernia" - those days of Marshall Stacks are Over. No one allows you to play at that volume anymore (plus) it's a drag Carrying: to-and-from the gig. Lightweight, Portable & Great Sound is the way-to-go.

I've always been a firm believer. In quality over quantity. The katana looks like a great 21st-century amp built from the ground up. I am sure the bass players who it attracts will enjoy all the features and take full advantage of them. I'm still in the learning phase of playing the bass. My thoughts on my progress are to make it as simple as possible. The Fender Rumble 100 is much more of a focused piece of kit. It will make my progression direct and to the point. Learning tone, timeing, and touch. Not getting distracted by bells and whistles. Less is more.

At certain settings the Boss seemed to have a slight buzz at the end of a note. I have noticed this in other demos. I think the speaker Boss used is the issue here where the tones don't ring clean with clarity on basic tones. I love the features on this Boss, it's a shame. I can't un-hear it.

It seems to me that these two amps target a different type of people, given the sounds and fx they offer. The Fender offers their own stuff, as it is logical, so it may firstly appeal to those who are in their ecosystem already or love their traditional sonic signature. The Boss is more experimental and may appeal to those who don't necessarily need to recreate specific sounds but rather want to make their own and be creative with the options offered by the amp.

I voted with my wallet .Boss Katana 210. IMHO the most versatile most complete most sculptable sound and the best quality & most expandable for under $ 1000 Au. And you can definitely gig w the 210 wheras the 110 won't cut it And for those who say it aint loud enough Do you own one or is that just a deluded opinion? If I hog tied you in front of it and it released its full fury @ your face you would scream for mercy & be in therapy for some time after. Also it introduce young players to somehing "new" haha! & NOT class D. What a class A/B amp & a mass loaded cab can do. An amp with wait for it ....headroom & fast transient attack. The rare gift of dynamics. Most bass players seem to like the rumble. I simply didn't & the way the BOSS outclasses EVERYTHING at that price point. It aint no fair fight its a SLAUGHTER.
Now the bad news It consumes only 117w So the claim of 160 wrms is once again BULLSHIT. Boss/ Roland hang your head in shame!. The tweeter is a piezo horn and straight up just wired in with NO active X over or ANY x over. So
" tweeter out" can only be a high pass or brick wall filter. Cheap & nasty but it works
So ALL bass combo manufacturers STOP £UCKING LYING! Because they won't unless we stop them. But overall it STILL kicks ass.
An older mate of mine is trading EDEN speakers and an Ampeg SVT 7 pro for this. Does it sound as good ? No, but it can be sculpted to get pretty damn close & he isn't constantly doing his back in carting 40 Kg as opposed to 20. Now argue with that!

It seems to me that with the Fender you get much more the sound of the bass itself, with the Katana the sound of the bass is less natural but much more "modern" for sure. They're both really good. I probably prefer the Fender, since I play fink with more vintage or classic bass sounds. But would be nice have both of them... 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The Rumble 40 is actually a good jazz guitar amp. The depth of the cabinet lends a richness to the sound. But it has no effects, not even reverb. So if you already have a Multi effects processor, the Rumble can work for you that way. For bass on this demo, the Rumble sounds better up front with the tone controls flat. That’s because Fender built it to make that sound. The Katana can get that sound, among the many sounds within it… while the Rumble cannot get almost all the sounds within the Katana.

Now I know why bass videos aren't as popular as guitar videos, without proper speakers, basses sound like flapping strings bouncing off of frets and well executed farts! Don't get me wrong, I love bass, but I first listened to this through my phonne, gave up, and had to return to it when I could get to my headphones! Stra'ngely enough, I have a Peavey Special 150, 112 combo that slays for bass, equal to or surpassing either of these amps. Unfortunately, it's also a viable anchor!

I’m surprised you didn’t compare the Fender Rumble with all the settings, and emulations? Fender Rumble Ver. 2 is the best sounding, but the ver. 3 are more convenient, especially due to the weight. I have a 100 watt Fender ver. 1 and takes almost two people to carry it while my 800 only takes one. You do sacrifice some sound for the weight. Even nicer if you get the one that emulates the older fender bass tones as well as a bunch of pedals packed into one which is what I have. And you can connect it to another cabinet.

@@WillyPDX94 I would say the katana is good for the money… but the only reason to get it over some other very good choices is it’s additional effects. The AB amp thing… yeah it’s often a preferred amp type, but in this instance it’s about the effects and modelling.
Think of it like an orange crush bass. I really love them, but I would advice most new players or people just looking for a bass amp to still get the fender or ampeg because it’s a one trick pony. It does the orange sound very well, the ampeg abs fender are more general purpose. Tbh I’m really including fender because it is good and to be democratic, in reality I recommend ampeg most of the time lol.

Watts are watts. Doesn't matter if its a class A/B or a class D or an All-Valve (All-Tube) power section. Watts are Watts (2.83v at 8Ω=1-watt). The class D power sections had some challenges when they first came out in bass amps because they would generate artifacts as they approached their limit. The impression was that they didn't have the headroom of the class A/B amps because the A/B amps didn't generate those artifacts as it approached peak power. However, Class D amps were used in audiophile applications well before they were used for bass amps and they had already developed designs that eliminated those artifacts. What I call the second generation of class D amps from about 2010, had solved that problem, so there is no problem with headroom in modern class D amps by reputable companies. Andy Field of Mesa Subway had a lot of experience with class D amps when he was working in the home electronics design for years before he joined Mesa. So Mesa was one of the very first companies to come out with what I call 2nd generation class D amps - precisely because of his experience in home audio design.
The main difference between Class A/B amps and Class D amps besides how they generate the watts, is their weight. I have an Eden WT500/800 amp that was upgraded by David Nordschow (aka David Eden) in 2010 from 500-watts to 800-watts bridged into 8 ohms. In its rack it weighs about 36-lbs. I also have a DNA-800 amp, which is a class D amp that puts out 800-watts into 4Ω. It weighs just 4.8-lbs. and sounds just as good, so you can see why I use it for all my indoor venues. DNA was the company David Nordschow started in ~2009 after he sold and left Eden. It's a superb amp with built-in compressor with adjustable threshold and ratio controls.
I use my DNA-800 amp for most venues, but will pull out my big Eden amp for Music Festivals where I'm only using my DNS-410. I use my DNS-210 for all indoor venues small to large because it is a very sensitive cab that will handle 700-watts rms with a max SPL of 134db. My DNS-410 will handle 1400-watts with a max SPL of 137db. If I decide to use both cabs, then I'll go back to my DNA class D amp because it will send out up to 400-watts per cab. Haven't needed to do that but I might want to sometime.
I needed to point that out because I keep hearing that the Katana with its class A/B watts is louder than the class D versions because it's class A/B watts. Again there are no "classes" of watts. 1-watt is 1-watt from anyway it's generated - again, 2.83v into 8Ω is one watt. HOWEVER, it can sound louder if it is paired with more sensitive speaker(s). Watts don't make an amp or combo loud by themselves. How they are matched to their speakers will make that difference. When I was touring with a nightclub group in the early 70's, I used a Standel MCIIb/SAM30b piggy back amp that a 215 bass reflex, powered speaker cab. It was so loud I could only turn it up half-way when we were playing in the outdoors in wide open spaces. 9 o'clock was the highest I could run it indoors. It was a 200-watt amp, which was a lot of watts in 1971 and it was louder than the new 300-watt Ampeg SVT fridge or the acoustic 360/361 (200-watts powered speaker cab with 18" folded horn). It was louder than those other superb amps because the amp was matched better to its 15" CTS speakers than the other amps were to theirs (neither of those amps were weak!). When a cab is more sensitive, it takes fewer watts to reach gig levels. Basically, it's a louder cab. So the combination of their watts and the speakers matched to them may make them louder.
I'm more prone to believe they are pushing the Class A/B watts myth because they are new at making amps. They've been making effects forever, but not amps. The class A/B amps have been around since the late 60's and are easier to design. Their only drawback is that they are heavy. The Katana 110 is 15-lbs heavier than the Rumble 100. Class D bass amps are comparatively new and they have limitations that have to be compensated for in the design to get the intrinsic headroom the old class A/B amps had. Honestly though, virtually all of the top manufacturers have figured out how to make great amps with that class, just Boss hasn't done that yet.
Besides my DNA-800 class D amp, I also have an Eden TN226 class D amp (225-watts into 4Ω) that weighs 4.7-lbs. I got it specifically to play small venues like brewpubs. My big Eden amp has a 12ax7 tube in the preamp running within very specific parameters to generate the warmth of sound that Eden has been known for. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that my little Eden class D amp sounded just as warm as my big Eden amp. They get that same warmth by using a "Golden Ear" chip (THAT-4301) that among other things emulates tube warmth. There's no reason now days that a class D can't sound as good as a class A/B while only weighing somewhere between about 4 and 7-lbs.
OK, I was going to stop but then you tried to do the side by side sound comparison using the same settings on both. Problem with that is that the same EQ settings on the different brands could render far different sounds. And there is no "vintage" standard. It all depends on the designer's preference. Usually for the "modern" sound those buttons will boost the hi-mids to get some "edge" to the tone, but again that's open to the designer. Even the same designer may have different EQ's on different models. David Nordschow founded Eden in 1976 and he designed my WT500/800 amp. It comes with a Bass EQ shelved at 30Hz, three semi-parametric controls to cover all three octaves a bass can produce, and a treble to adjust everything from 2.2KHz on up. With my DNA-800 that he designed with his newer company he put the Bass EQ at 35Hz, the low-mid at 500Hz, the high-mid at 2KHz and the treble again adjusts everything above 2KHz. He didn't use semi-parametriccontrols at all. With my passive Jazz bass I always boost the low mids slightly (to about 1:30) and leave everything else flat on my Eden amps. On his DNA amp I boost the low-mids the same amount but also have to boost the bass to ~1 o'clock to get the same sound I get from the Eden amps with the bass EQ set flat.
By the way, both of your amps sounded better with the mic than the DI. I presume the DI was a pre-EQ signal. The mic sounded better to me because the cabs make a difference in the sound and the mic picks that up whereas the DI with the flat (or native voicing) signal wouldn't.
Sorry if I came across too critical. I enjoyed your video and you really gave a good demonstration of what the different combos sounded like by both going through the DI and by being mic'd. So, overall I'd say, "Well Done" I like the sound of the Fender partly because my first amp was an all-tube 1966 Fender Bassman that I bought in 1966. But the Katana is also a good sounding combo. No question when it comes to the effects the Katana walks away with it all because they've been making great effects for decades. It was a nice run through of both amps. Thanks for putting this out!

Well to be honest I totally prefer the Fender Rumble. It is just simple as sh*t, but it has a clear and understandable straight sound in all modes (Flat, Bright, Contour, Vintage). Fender Rumble is more punchy and it's incredibly light weight. I just ordered one yesterday and it arrives tomorrow, I can't wait. I'm gonna use it with a Tech 21 VT bass V2 Sansamp pedal and I think its gonna RUMBLE. I know it because the amp I had before was a Fender Rumble 150 (13 year old). That amp was so brutal in sound, but it was heavy as mud (40kgs). So I decieded to change it for a physically smaller and lighter amp with equal efficiency.
For me the Boss Katana was a disappointment, nevertheless it has so many effects built in etc. It feels like a "plastic" sound for me. It's only my honest opinion, unfortunately this combo did not convince me. In case of effects I own some pedals like EBS Octabass, Electro Harmonix Mono Synth, Ampeg Octacomp and Tech21 VT bass V2 Sansamp. Those effects are awesome and provide versatile and natural sounds. Together the Rumble and the pedals are going to be killer.

My impression is that fender has a smooth groove, the boss had a funky groove to it, but the edge in quality was on fender's side imo. Neither are bad and the katana could suit some people much better. Additionally, this test is extremely falsifiable considering different players and different guitars with different amp settings.

I only started playing again since then but I absolutely love everything from Fender out currently. I started with the Rumble 50 but quickly switched to the Rumble Studio which competes directly with the Katana. I absolutely love it. However it definitely has some limitations. I would love to see a comparison between the two, but it would take an awful lot to consider moving away from Fender. For me right or wrong it’s still Fender then everything else. Love the show and I always look forward to a new episode.

Man get the katana 2x10 it’s loud as hell responsive like a tube amp and the tone is sick with my active or my passive basses and it kills its as loud as a 500watts class d . The a/b have more headroom and it’s cuts through any guitar stacks and drums🤘🏻👍🏻

That did not sound like a Rumble, certainly not initially (as any Rumble owner will know). When they started tweaking EQ and the sound switched to mic, then more true deep full Rumble character was coming out. But at the start..... Forget it, not a fair representation.
Also, not a realistic side by side comparison, when the newer Rumble Stage models 40 & 800 have comparible effects, software options like the Boss Katana. So a pretty pointless comparison. Anyone would think they're trying to sell Boss ?!! 🤣

Don't really think comparing class a/b amps with class d amps is a fair comparison because most people will take the cost/weight reduction of the class D regardless of how "better" the heavier class a/b are.
As for me though class a/b katana for the win as I don't gig anymore so weight isn't an issue anymore. The rumble 100 is still is an awesome combo for the price. Tried it in the store and was very impressed.

If you're talking about weight, the Rumble wins hands down. I put a NEO 12 in my Rumble 100, and it weighs 18 lbs. (I also installed batting inside the cabinet). For tone flexibility? IMHO the Rumble wins hands down again.

That Katana blows me away. Seems as though the Rumble has finally been dethroned.
