  • This is how I prune or trim my vitex tree. Also known as chaste tree. This is my favorite tree for pollinators. It also looks great in your landscape. Such a great pollinator friendly tree.

One of my favorite trees. Nice job. I generally prune my crape myrtles and vitex into 3 main trunks and then I let them split into 3 more and then 3 more. Your tree seems to be pretty much that way as well.

Would like to see updates on your Vitex after this pruning process. We planted our vitex in the Summer of 2020. We experienced the super freeze in South Texas ( Rio Grande Valley) and we thought they were toast. They came back so quickly and beautifully. Our issue is going to be our very hot summers. Hopefully they can keep growing beautifully.

I sure will. The buds on mine are just starting to leaf out. The freeze got a few of my other plants but the vitex is showing signs of life. Mine was planted in 2015. The heat here in Oklahoma has not hurt mine. However it does catch some shade from the house.

Same here! ^^^^in San Antonio and my baby vitexs made it and bloomed this summer gorgeous, they are now both 4-5 ft! I need to learn some pruning tips because those babies are also equally wide now, I may have to transplant one of them to give it some more room. Awesome video 🙏 thank you 😊

Hi- love how you’re giving it structure.

Looks very nice. I love to watch pruning and with a vitex it's so forgiving!
I finally got out of the car and looked at one of the big ones in a parking lot... and it's been cut back so many times there's this massive trunk parts in the middle almost 18" wide! The sculpting on yours making it looks like a japanese maple specimen type rather than a crepe myrtle chopped down every year.

They are very forgiving for sure. They produce so much growth that you could almost prune it 2-3X a year. I have a friend that has a very large (20'-30' spread) and old vitex that grows untamed. I might see if I can do a video just to show how they grow unpruned.

Informative video on this vitex. I have one this spring that is just shooting suckers like crazy that I was seeking guidance on. Appreciate the solid works tshirt too as an IT guy that used to support engineers (autodesk shop) 👍🏻

Thanks! Mine always has multiple suckers also. Did your tree dye back from a freeze? Keep in mind these trees can grow quite large. So if your heavily pruning each year to maintain a smaller size, its going to concentrate its energy on putting out more lower growth. I took that into consideration in this years pruning video which I'll be editing soon. I can't tell you how many times I've seeked help with CAD!

Great job! It seems drastic and like you cut a lot, but it’ll look better in the long run!

Wow you planted so close to your house. Just bought this tree I thought it was just a bush but the more I read the more I'm afraid to plant this tree because it can get massive and a bit invasive.

      @duncansgardengarage3473  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree. It is somewhat close. I did not plant it though. You will definitely have to prune it each rear to keep the branches off your house. The good thing is that pruning is easy and you almost cant mess it up. Oddly enough, I see a lot of local houses with these planted right next to them. I plan to plant another one which will be much further from my home. It is good your are thinking ahead for when it matures in size.

I've heard these have invasive roots, is that true?

My vitex already looks like this in early October! Is that normal? Or is it dead? The leaves shriveled brown before dropping off. This is my first year with it.

I planted 2 new vitex this year also. Even though the tree is labeled heat tolerant, I notice it likes lots of water the 1st year. This is usual for new plants because their root system needs to get established in your native soil. As mine began to dry out, the leaves turned yellow and started dropping. The good thing is that as soon as I watered them, you could see them perk back up and put on new growth. I have had to water them almost every night this summer due to our cracked dried out clay soil. I have never had to water my large vitex. It actually thrives as the heat cranks up and the soil dries out. I would put some mulch around the base, water the crap out of it, and look for signs of life (buds, new leaves, regreening). The best way to check is to very lightly slice the bark of the lower trunk. If you seen any green underneath, its alive. If not, there could be a chance it could come back but the existing above ground growth is dead. That's fine. Just cut all the dead growth back in the spring and let the new growth take over. Plus, I would even water yours biweekly through the winter if your area doesn't get much rain. Hope this helps!

You should have left the center branch because you have a void now.

Can you grow this tree in a container? Thanks in advance

    • @duncansgardengarage3473

I have never tried it. This tree is relatively small compared to other trees but it can grow 20+ ft if not pruned. I am not sure if it is pot friendly like some Japanese maples. Great question though.
