Older pirated versions of Garry's Mod used to print a fake error message. Anyone who complained on the forums about it was asked to post a photo. If they did, the developer would perma ban them. Memories.
The most disturbing thing about Don't Copy That Floppy (I do remember but never saw) is that "rapper" is a lawyer.who actually held important positions in Washington. And ironically it became a viral video because the creators allowed non-commercial copying.
another good subtle things devs did to mess with pirates is in Euro Truck Simulator 2 (and probably American Truck Sim as well) if you pirate the game all of your trucks will turn bright pink no matter what you do. I found out about this because, a couple years ago, while I had bought the game, I wanted to run a previous patched version so I pirated a previous version to mess with a mod that wasn't updated. Now whenever I see someone on the forums complaining they need to fix that bug, I just laugh to myself.
My favorite copy protection in a video game is Far Cry 4s removing the fov slider if you pirate it. I also like how its so broken and badly programmed that playing the game on a 21:9 monitor trips the copy protection, and how this still hasn't been fixed
On the topic of old pirated games being better than the originals, I recalled having Amiga games that had both the original and copied floppies in the box, since despite owning the game it was still a better idea to play with copied versions to not wear out or risk breaking the originals.
Little Computer People on the Atari ST loaded up fine if you copied it, but then the little man just stood knocking on your monitor screen and wagging a finger at you. Lovely!
Look mum, i'm on TH-cam!... Oh and Stuart Ashen is there too I guess. This was a great talk and it's great to watch it again with the added bonus of seeing the back of my head.
As good as Game Dev Tycoon's anti-piracy measure was, it really is a shame the game is a blatant, 1:1 copy of Kairosoft's Game Dev Story. It would be nice if, in delivering their message about how not paying for content causes content creators to go bust, they didn't do it with a stolen idea. The games really are so superficially different that they even have exactly the same shortcomings.

I absolutely loved Ashens' other two presentations on Hareraiser and TOGYPNHO, so I am super happy to see he has done another one!
The real question is why anyone would want to pirate a Michael Jackson DS game.
Really enjoy ashen's talks. Thanks for the upload.
In Australia we had "Have you ever bought or watched a video that wasn't quite right?" spoken in a deep, sonorous male voice

when talking about piracy making games better, i was hoping he would mention crack screens and the cool music from the c64 days.

Very good! I remember those plastic lens things, absolutely awful!
Great talk but doesn't feel complete without the IT Crowd's anti-piracy spoof.
Love Ashens' talks
