I hope everyone paid attention when he said the most important word: *metronome.* Especially if you *think* you don't need one, you definitely need one. (just a tip from someone who was already teaching people to shred back in the 80's). Biggest mistake I ever made as a player was to *think* I didn't need one for the first few years I played because I had such good natural rhythm. They will make you more precise, cleaner, faster and generally more confident. They will also make good drummers love you, and crap drummers hate you, lols. But the audience will always always love you.

Thanks a lot for this lesson! I'm 51 and started guitar 5 years ago. First interested mostly in blues, now as almost intermediate, getting more and more into rock and metal! Old man getting wild😂😂 But its never too late! I followed you the past few years, and loved the reviews and challenges at Andertons. Also witnessed the launch of your brand, getting popular and successful. It was your smart concept to ask us, the customers, what we would like to see on your guitars. Hell yeah! 🤘 What a legend Rob, you're an amazing man and a beast of a guitarist (oh, and not to forget that you're an awesome singer as well!), and above all a huge inspiration! Been following you for years now and I'm so proud to see you grow this much in so little time, it's absolutely astounding! Love your work and your vids, keep up with the great content! ❤ Richard considerably out. * Explosion. *
Start: I can’t possibly learn much from 20 minute video about playing metal 20 minutes later: well how wrong could I possibly be! Great video, thanks Chappers!
this was the best guitar lesson via youtube ive ever had. Ive played for years and youtube is either "never picked up a guitar" or "well you know music theory 212 so here is a gallop off the E7b#major scale and chord progression" Thanks Rob
Please keep doing what you are in this video. You are one of the very few who knows how to make it clear which strings are actually being used in both your instruction and the camera angle. THANK YOU! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❗️
This is exactly what I've been looking for. I'm only a month or so in to playing guitar but metal is what I want to learn and it's hard to find an understandable explanation that truly understands how useless I am as a beginner 😂
Hey man these videos are amazing. I’ve been playing for years. This resource you have created has enabled me to learn new techniques. I love the way I connect with the music through your teaching style. You have an amazing gift when it comes to teaching. I would love more of this. These are not just for beginners/intermediate. This is a gift for the music community. Thank you for being you.
I started out playing guitar in my 20s gave up because it was too hard... rediscovered the guitar at 37 years old... already learning some Springsteen songs... but I wanna learn the key to playing metal...
@@kevin2400 -Springsteen? no no no man, five finger death punch, slipknot, look up on YT-"devin townsend-forgotten" at EMG studios, great performance. you talking this metal or springsteen metal?
I was lucky enough to see Metallica when I was a JR in high school in 1991. I used their music while lifting weights for American football and in my dream job until I was injured in the line of duty. Years later with a slight head injury that effected short term stuff (There are people out there with way worse brain injuries) my doctor told me to pick up and lean a new hobby. So I am driving home with the Metallica on and the same band that got me pumped for lifting got me to pick up a guitar. I started at the age of 44, I don't play much medal I love to play the blues. Thing is don't let people tell you that you are to old to pick up a guitar like some family and friends that I have proved wrong. I am not good but way better than they thought I would be after 2 years...thank you Rob for all the inspiration and lessons in all the videos you do on this channel and with Lee you are the coolest guitar company owner hands down
Great video! I own a guitar for years, but i always get "intimidated" by how much theory and even practice is required to make songs, improvise, etc. But, man, this video and the one about the beginner scales demystified it for me. You made it seem obvious, fun, useful. You made me realise the real importance of practicing picking patterns, learn the scales of a certain key (all of which always felt boring and, in reality, abstract for me), and well, the importance is HAVING LOADS OF FUN! Thank you Rob! Please, keep this beginner series going :D
And also I just want to put in like a PS, you really inspire me a lot a lot of folks tell me you're 50 you got a major disability just quit give it up quit being a child, they have no idea what's going through my mind and the sounds that I hear when I think of my music, right now I'm literally sitting on about 200 songs worth of music but I have to get my equipment together you know as well as I do that's extremely important to have the right equipment for the sound that you want, and I have to admit it's quite discouraging when people tell me I'm too old I'm a gimp you know give it up you know don't don't disgrace myself by walking out on a stage with a guitar, I say thanks to you and people like you that I follow and that I respect but you're the only one that I ask advice from, like this and you inspire me to keep going so for you to reply to me sometimes the way you do every once in awhile means the world to me I don't feel alone then I feel like I got to a coach in my corner helping me, and for that Mr Chapman I am eternally grateful, but again I would like your honest opinion on what guitar would best suit what I'm trying to do between the schecter I believe it's the A1 apocalypse purple with tremolo, or the dragon blood ghost rep I don't know if it comes with trim lower or not I don't think it does, but I've also been very out there about your quality of guitars you give people more bang for their Buck like shafter does so to me coming from ESP over to Chapman or over to schecter is a major major move, I own a couple of esp's but the thing about the ESPYs I can afford they sound so much alike no matter what you do I need something that sounds different, so please any suggestions you can give me I would greatly appreciate and thank you so much every time I see your videos it's like a huge inspiration thank you and God bless
Saw the title of the vid and immediately grabbed my Sterling Axis and plugged it in to my Randal Diavlo. I just started to teach myself guitar one month ago and your videos have been an inspiration. You're a legend, thanks.
I was originally self taught too (took theory lessons on piano later). Learning how to play by ear is something I highly suggest to others. Music is all about your ears. Take good care of them too, they're the most important thing you'll ever have for being a musician. I wish I'd started using ear plugs sooner for gigs and band practice. I have severe tinnitus now and it's distracting at best.
Great to see this kind of lesson always wanted to learn a bit of metal, oh I’m 55 and have only been playing for 14 months and your videos keep me motivated to learn more ,keep up the good work
Video lesson number 3! Since this is in my listening wheelhouse I was particularly pleased with the subject matter of this video. I first picked up the guitar after my father passed away in 85 and I was listening to all the Hair Metal, Classic Rock, heck anything with Guitar in it. I loved Metallica back in the day and Megadeth. Anyways I sold all my stuff back in 86 before I left to go into the US Army. I picked up the guitar this year again and am trying to learn the instrument for real and I find that these three videos of yours are really perfect because as you stated multiple times I can slow it down, stop it, put it down and pick it back up after time at work or with my daughters. I have really enjoyed these videos tremendously and look forward to the latest entry in this series. Thanks for the inspiration and Cheers!
One cool thing is to play the lowered fifth. If you are playing say a D power chord: root on the fifth fret A string, and the fifth on the 7th fret D string, just drop your first finger over the low E string on the fifth fret too. This is another A note, the fifth of D. Sounds a lot more heavy than just the simple power chord and it's also movable of course too. You can go a lot further though and play Major and minor thirds and even intervals that are more odd than those. Always use your ear. And sometimes metal does use open chords, and nothing wrong with getting more _jazzy_ too if you like the sound it makes. Metal is ever evolving and like anything artistic can be whatever you want it to be. That is in fact how metal was invented (and every other genre of music too).
Aylbdr Madison Along similar lines, it's really easy with vary your power chords to play a diminished fifth (one semitone down on the string you're playing fifth) alternating with a perfect fifth or a minor second (one semitone up on the root string you're playing fifth) alternating with the root. Those are both badass metal intervals that are there for beginner guitarists. (Into the bargain dazzle your metal bandmates by knowing what a minor second and diminished fifth are!)
Eric Surely the entire point of watching TH-cam instructional videos is that you don't have to “do the legwork”? Eventually you're probably going to have to look at some theory but maybe Rob can kick that can down the road for a while.
Please do more lessons you are by far one of the best I’ve seen on TH-cam. I’m a year into learning and watched many videos no one ever explained the simple two finger muting to rid unwanted harmonics. Or they say play chords but don’t show what fingers are where like we all know already. Thanks man
So, can I say how much I love this? I’m definitely an intermediate player, been playing for years, but never played much metal… Or any metal! So this is still great for me. And I love the format. I love how it’s like I’m sitting down with you and having a lesson. I love the back-and-forth as you show something and then encourage us to stop and try it and come back and listen some more or to play along with you. It’s just great. And I definitely took advantage of it, grabbed my own vintage 80s super Strat (1989 Korean made Squier II) plugged into my katana mini and played along. Made for a great practice session. Thanks! Btw, had the opportunity to play (unplugged) a Chapman ML1 pro at GC yesterday, and it felt amazing!
Snicker Uker Mostly because of time. Only had a few minutes and it was in the used gear room where they didn’t have an amp set up and ready to go, not that I could find anyway. Surprised to see it, it’s a pretty rare find in the states. So I definitely had to Pick it up and play it a bit, even if it was just unplugged.
@Snicker Uker : Always always try out an electric unplugged first. Then you can really hear the difference between even guitars of the exact same make and model better. Then after you've narrowed it down to 1 - 3 that sound the best unplugged, then plug them into the same amp you have at home, *not* a better amp. Way too many people plug into a better amp in the store, buy the guitar, then get home only to find the new guitar sounds only as good or worse than their old guitar.
This is awesome, so glad you made this video. I’m not a beginner myself, but it’s nice to see people like you making beginner videos for people who specifically want to play metal. You should start a series on this and move on to intermediate and advanced stuff. Keep kicking ass rob! 🤘🏻
I love that too and I miss teaching guitar even more myself. Where I live now not many people play instruments at all, and I have yet to find any students. I guess I could do lessons on youtube, but I seem to be getting lazy about even just playing in my old age, lols. But it's really fun watching these, and I'm subscribed to a number of music theory channels and still manage to learn more. Especially about the stuff I didn't bother with so much as a youngster like blues, country and jazz. I was always more of a neo-classical, prog rock, and metal guitarist back then.
Keys to the Lamborghini... nice reference to Michael Angelo Batio "Speed Kills" And here I'm 19 years old , playing 3 years with my Gibson Les Paul and Marashall and I can't play last exercise.. Ah thank you uncle Rob
These are the kinds of tips and tricks I wish someone would have taught me in 82 when I first picked up a guitar. Great stuff, and even though I’ve played for bit, I still learned something.
Thanks for the content. Even when I'm like an intermediate player, this video is really useful, concise and was easy to understand. Surely you're one of the better guitar teachers in the youtube world
Shit, you weren't kidding about basics! Good to see tbh, in this era of videos where everyone is going mad in their guitar videos, this kind of video might benefit someone who's been on the fence about guitar music.
Started playing Offspring - Gotta Get Away, at one point. Then noticed you didn’t realize it. Atleast I learned a new old song because of it. That’s something great about a video like this. It’s all stuff I already know but I was still able to take something away from it. Also makes me realize I’ve been listening to the same music for over 25 years. Thanks for making 34 feel old Chappers.
Great job chappers, I know you are a katana guy , could you do a video to show some set ups on the katana do get different tones for different music ie, somewhere to start metal/ rock/ blues and how to shape the tone for us newbs... cheers
Hi iv just discovered your channel and its awesome! I have dyspraxia and find it hard to understand guitar teachers. But you have a gift I can understand and copy what your doing. I'm adding the 3 scales you need to know to this and I sound like a hero but my neighbour's hate me now.
Great video! That was a pretty cool and layman friendly break down of Metal chords, Thank you! I could hear so many songs it was crazy(like a train), makes me want to search out those songs again. Rob you should sell bundles of gear that make the style of sound you are playing that day, priced: low, mid, high or mix and match, people would be inspired to buy a kit or a piece to build off of. Keep these coming please :)
Been teaching my friend how to play guitar and this video will be perfect for him as his favourite bands are Metallica and slipknot and he really wants to play in that style. Thanks for the video Chappers, Cheers \M/

It would be cool if you could do some more intermediate inversions. Like different ways to play chords other than the usual E and A string bar chords.

I started out as a classic rock guitarist, then prog rock, then jazz fusion, then classical before I joined my first thrash metal band, lols.
Speedforhire Later that night I did! Haha.
You are the awesome metal guitar teacher sir
So happy Rob that you are doing guitar lessons again as your roots are as a teacher. Good stuff!
I've always secretly enjoyed metal and now I have the fundamentals of maintaining a rhythmic, percussive line. Thanks.
Keys to the Lamborghini... nice reference to Michael Angelo Batio "Speed Kills"
And here I'm 19 years old , playing 3 years with my Gibson Les Paul and Marashall and I can't play last exercise..
Ah thank you uncle Rob
I wish I'd had such a great explanation like this when I was just starting! Awesome video man, this will help a lot of people 🤘
These are the kinds of tips and tricks I wish someone would have taught me in 82 when I first picked up a guitar. Great stuff, and even though I’ve played for bit, I still learned something.
Great informativ vid for the newborn schredders out there. love your content Rob.
GREAT T.SHIRT ROB! Your are a man of great taste.
Just beginning the Metal thing! Thanks for all the pointers, Really Appreciate This Video!
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing some of your wisdom. Very motivating. Looking forward to more of your lessons. Metal rules...that's for sure.
Metal aside, that "Big trouble in little China" poster in the background really brings me back... heavy. Cheers!
I've been struggling with this muting playing this helps me so much explained so well thanks heaps.
Hey! I'm starting to learn Metal on guitar, this is soooooooooooooo useful, thanks a lot!
I used to have that exact guitar a long time ago! I would love to find another one! Beautiful!
Your timing is perfect. Two hours ago I was wondering how to get the sounds I'm not getting, now I'm sorted. :D
That guitar is so rad.
Wow, you're a great teacher. I hope there's more of this.
Great job chappers, I know you are a katana guy , could you do a video to show some set ups on the katana do get different tones for different music ie, somewhere to start metal/ rock/ blues and how to shape the tone for us newbs... cheers
Nice lesson; thank you for taking time and not rushing so much.
Hi iv just discovered your channel and its awesome! I have dyspraxia and find it hard to understand guitar teachers. But you have a gift I can understand and copy what your doing. I'm adding the 3 scales you need to know to this and I sound like a hero but my neighbour's hate me now.
That is the way you make decent instructional videos!
Good lesson Rob! I'd love to see more advanced techniques covered.
Your the best mate thank's for making it easer to learn
This is very helpful, thanks a lot Rob!
Thanks for your video Rob very cool stuff, even I at 69 am getting the metal urge,I want to learn more.Cheers from Australia.
The smile on my face when you said Tornado of Souls
Great video! That was a pretty cool and layman friendly break down of Metal chords, Thank you! I could hear so many songs it was crazy(like a train), makes me want to search out those songs again.
Rob you should sell bundles of gear that make the style of sound you are playing that day, priced: low, mid, high or mix and match, people would be inspired to buy a kit or a piece to build off of.
Keep these coming please :)
im a super beginner and this is a major eye opener. thank you so much for this video
We love you Rob.
Been teaching my friend how to play guitar and this video will be perfect for him as his favourite bands are Metallica and slipknot and he really wants to play in that style. Thanks for the video Chappers, Cheers \M/
Just your tip of slanting the pick helps so much with palm muting! Thanks... this really was a great intro :)

Great video, Rob! Gonna out it to good use. We met and hung out with you and Dan at Winter NAMM 2010. I was there with the dude you said looked like Zakk. We all want to Red Robin and you had a " Proper American Burger"

Like, 30 seconds in and I’ve liked it. I haven’t picked up a guitar in years but love your videos, keep it up man! Love the content
Rob playing metal is bloody great!
I love the way you say Sepultura
Man, I just bought a dirt cheap Yamaha RGX312 from a pawn shop in perfect condition. They had no idea what instrument they had on their hands. I absolutely adore it!
i Love you old man. NO RULES BAYBEEEEEH! YEAAA
When he said "No rules, Silvia!", I subscribed. So freakin funny, dude lol :D :D
Alive in the time of metal, thanks for the keys to the Lamborghini :)

Was surrounded by your latest guitars last night @ GC. Pretty amazing, imho, you're already better but going to be even bigger & do it faster than another "young" (35yr old) guitar co.🤘🏻 PROPER🤘🏻
Damn you are a good teacher! Will be getting a guitar soon, just watching this in advance!
I love the Big Trouble in Little China book in the background. That alone gets you a subscribe!
Wish I'd seen this a year ago. Took me months to put all this together on my own.
