That turned out very, very nice in the end. Nice piece of Sega trivia at 17:41 too. Don't find many people who know that bit of history.
Have a Model 2 SegaCD myself, with an early model 1 Genesis. Never had one back in the era, as I had sold my Genesis, in order to help buy a PC. Went on to reclaim a Genesis and get a SegaCD as well, years later.
Certainly glad to see this unit having been rescued though. It appears to work great. Nice work, bud.

Thoroughly enjoyed this Mega CD 'Retro Resurrection'. I have 2 Mega CD's, (i have at least one backup for nearly every one of my consoles, in many cases more) yes I'm a bit nuts like that!
I'm a big Mortal Kombat fan, and i had to own every home port of every 2D Mortal kombat game (except that awful and super expensive SMS version of MK3) so thanks to the existence of MK CD, i had to purchase a Mega CD, and it is actually the best home port of the game so i'm happy to have it. Final Fight is awesome, again the best home port. I have Sonic CD too, but i much prefer 2 and 3 tbh, but that said, it is still a great addition to the series.
I'm now getting more into burned alternatives, thanks to the ££££ for original copies, (i started "collecting" back in 98 when these games were as little as 50p. lol) so i'll definitely be picking more title up for the Mega CD in the future.

Historically motorized trays tend to break but there is something oddly satisfying about them, bit like a robot I guess. I had one but didn't know anyone else with one bitd, actually a lot of fun to use between the time of 16-bit and the PS1 where consoles weren't very good or cost effective for a while EGs. 3DO/CD-i/Jaguar/Amiga CD. Yeah FF:CD has gone up in price at lot, picked up my original copy from a rental place. In hindsight I should have gone to Vancouver(insert your major city) because there was far less coming into my town, could have got Snatcher/Keio:FS when it wasn't insanely priced.

I still own my Mega CD, from new and when it came out back in early 90's.. I still use it today.. I have a number of Original retail disks and loads of backup/copies that all work great.. Keio flying squadron I downloaded a PAL version but have patched some NTSC and NTSC-J disks, if you buy a Everdrive V5 or V7 you can change the BIOS via the Cartridge (EASY).. I find the Mega CD underrated but I think its great.. Look out for Super Strike Trilogy (Desert strike, urban strike, jungle strike) never was retailed but was in development and never finished (someone did finish development).. Super Strike Trilogy is available to download but will need patching for PAL systems.. There is loads of good games available on Mega CD that people never talk about, even some FMV games are good.

Hi Mark, an excellent series you refurbished that unit to an excellent standard. I recently moved house and found my own Mega drive and mega cd in the loft, thought I would set them up and re-live the many hours of pleasure I remember, just wanted to ask your advice, set the mega drive up it worked fine once I remembered that I had to tune the modern flat screen tv in manually 😀. Connected the Mega cd up and switched on it started making a strange noise I turned it off immediately, tried again the green ready light came on and the screen went white but nothing else happened switched it off left for a while but when I turned it back on nothing happened no lights on just a black screen😩, could I have blown the fuse? If so there must be an underlying problem, could that noise be a problem with the drive motor? I look forward to your reply thanks.

    • @MarkFixesStuff
      @MarkFixesStuff  6 ปีที่แล้ว

I was wondering. I think it sat in water for a long time too, because there was a strange "bronzing" effect on some parts of the lower plastic case which can only have happened if the shielding rusted while it was all in water.

    • @andreasmaltcke117

Generally, it looks like it was lying "a little" on the bottom of the trash container.
The polished shield(-s) looks good. Sometimes instead of polishing, use zinc spray. It does not look so "shiny", but it prevents corrosion in the future. Particularly thicker steel sheets, like PC cases, after cleaning rust, should be painted with zinc (or zinc-aluminum) spray. Not for the look, just to protect against corrosion in the future.
      You can use this:
      www.amazon.co.uk/Fibreglass-Abrasive-Cleaning-Pencil-Refills/dp/B003YSWJDG
      (I've seen cheaper)
not only for cleaning rust, but for example removing paint from board. You have to be careful, because you can remove paint AND copper under it, if you use too much / too long. But it is a really useful tool in repairing electronics. One stick (replaceable) is enough for a few months, mostly ;-)

      "That pencil looks great."
Yes, but I must say that it has some "inconvenience".
I will quote a fragment of the product review:
"BE CAREFUL NOT TO GET ANY OF THE GLASS STUCK IN YOUR FINGERS AND WEAR GLOVES WHEN YOU ARE USING THE PEN THOUGH"
That's true, and I will add from myself that touching your eyes with this dust on your hands is even less desirable. Shards of thin glass threads are more dangerous than the needles of this cactus famous for the fact that it feels a month after taking it in your hand. But gloves are not necessary, you just need to remove dust, for example with a brush or a cotton swab or a small vacuum cleaner?
I write this not to you, but to people who may come up with the idea of using this tool. The tool is very good, but you have to use it wisely.
I have been using it for over 20 years, and I did not have any "accident". But my friend was once careless, and he had to visit the hospital (glass dust got into the eye). You need to be careful.
