Can you free the frozen toads of the Star Festival in Super Mario Galaxy? This is the number one question I get asked on most of my Mario Galaxy mystery videos. So when I first got the game as a wee child, I knew of the spin attack from watching my friend play at his house. After seeing the frozen toads, I tried spinning, unaware that the ability wasn't unlocked until later. Long story short, I spent probably an hour being confused and extremely frustrated, thinking my game or wii was broken. I went as far as to looking in the instruction manual, which of course told me to shake the woo remote, only leading to more frustration. It wasn't until looking up how to spin that...
I realized what was going on.
Child me realized that those toads would remain trapped.
Unable to escape.
And worst of all, there was nothing, absolutely nothing I could do. I had to leave them behind.
I love this game, but man was that scene traumatizing...

If it makes you feel any better, those toads all got saved in the 100% completion cutscene, after the final update. So, canonically, they're all safe.

The Wii could put out some great graphics. The only problem was that it was 480p. Emulation shows how good it could have been with a resolution bump

i remember trying to save these people from getting eaten alive by wild animals in Ratchet&clank going commando on planet oozla but once you kill all the animals and walk up to the person you save they just die anyway

The Toads' giddy noise is their joyful expression of their soul being freed from their crystalline prison. F for each and every one of them that we lost that fateful day.
Seriously though if a giddy noise is made that means they're still alive, but since their bodies shattered with the crystal means that their bodies have also crystallized in some way and in some amount with it. Their souls are literally trapped because they can't die and they need Mario to shatter their crystals with his star power so they can pass on. That is dark. Probably one of the worst acts Bowser has done and one of the toughest deeds Mario had to perform.

Makes me wonder... would Bowser go back to his kingdom scotch free or will he see some form of severe punishment for his crime? This would be literally the first time that Bowser has essentially killed citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom. I could imagine a lot of things potentially happening: Bowser's execution, his family being stripped of their rights to kingship, the seizure of the Koopa Kingdom, etc... Maybe these things are a bit extreme, but in any case, after that warmhearted ending to Super Mario Galaxy dark times are ahead. How do you think things will play out when Mario frees the first toad only find that it's the first of many casualties of the Mushroom Kingdom?
This is not the first time bowser kills someone on the mushroom kingdom. In the first mario game the description of that game in the instruction manual is that bowser had transformed all the toads into blocks, clouds, coins etc. So every block that mario breaks, every coin he collect is a poor soul of an innocent toad who died because of bowser

One of the toads even mentioned that there be something related to coins of the color purple being made available to get acquired later in the game as well. One of the toads also mentioned that as long people play the game according the standards of the storyline progression will still be able to see it in the same way again. I believe what Princess Peach was wanting to tell us bit could not might have been something related to the technology that would eventually be coming out in the future to enhance the quality of gaming quality in the future. Also Princess Peach also mentioned that hopefully you could do it again later on after the game was out for a longer period of time as well as her saying something related to it already potentially being released in the future on a portable console with her not fully certain what the name of the console even was at the time.
Nintendo definitely talked about these ideas exactly how to do what was mentioned inside of the video early on in the game development regarding what exactly would be uploaded in the future as well. What I meant to say that was written on the pieces of paper that were staring at when writing up the information contained likely exactly what to do. They probably already knew that this exact video idea would get made in the future as well. They were already aware of the video regarding the four missing characters in Mario Golf would get made in the future, even way back then when they were originally talking about it as well.
All in all you're just another Toad in the Crystal.

It’s crazy because in the original Mario toads we’re actually bricks in the wall...
These Toads trapped in the crystals are just cheerfully smiling despite going through a near-death experience. The toads that were freed are gonna need some therapy.
Toni Mauge they don’t have to, they’re already dead. There are new toads that instantly pop up to replace their existence. The toads that were trapped in crystals have ceased to exist the moment Mario has touched them.

No, they just know that they will die one way or another. If the crystal breaks, they die. If they stay in the crystal, they die, but slower. They smile because they have come to terms with how they will die. They are no longer afraid.

Actually they're happy cuz they were having a party and they got trapped without even realizing what was happening, so they just got frozen and didn't have the time to see anything
The start of the game was seriously magical for me as a lil' un and and it felt like there was a lot of effort put into the beginning galaxy. I also love how the game loops back around on itself with the final purple coin challenge and even sends your Wii Account a thank you message. Super Mario Galaxy really felt like a complete game to me.

When I was child I literraly tried EVERYTHING to let free that poor toads ;-;
Once I freed them, they stayed floating in the same postition. I tried re doing the gateway, and completed it, but once I entered the Observatory, the game layered the beginning one over the the 3 grand star Laboratory, and then the game crashed. Surprised it didn’t do that earlier

Not that different from when Bowser turned the entire population into brick blocks and Mario can break them all for extra points.
There's about a 56-bit difference! (No one likes to talk about it, but systems actually stopped at 64bits. Even the Switch is still 64bit, computing has simply improved in other ways.)
Why does everyone ignore the fact that it's only the bricks that give you things (not ? Blocks, bricks that give coins and 1-ups and whatnot) are the Toads that were transformed and that the coins/1-ups/whatever are gifts for freeing them
@@Wendy_O._Koopa you don't really know what 8 bit or 64 bit means. Saying it's only a 56 bit difference is like saying 1 and 1,000,000 is only a difference of 6 zeros. 8 bit means there are 256 different values it can store 64 bit means it can store 2^64 values.

@@TheAbsol7448 I'm an adult, I was just super into Odyssey at that time and that influenced how I looked at other 3d Marios. Thinking "throw your cap at it" is kind of like a reflex by now, haha. Well and I never played any Galaxy game when I was younger, only years later.

The cutscene involving the star festival in the very beginning of the game could not even be coded the way to work as you mentioned considering that Nintendo also mentioned the barrier that triggers the cutscene when Bowser comes in is actually wrapped around a little bit around the outside of the area surrounding the outside area as well. Nintendo did mention that they were very intrigued at the idea of the Mario throwing his cap at enemies and the surrounding environment, but they were not fully certain if the technology ACTUALLY WAS RELEASED on the market already. They did admit that they may have found it temporarily available to maybe get used, but even if it was a permanent application they still did not want to use it until they felt it was actually documented with valid links verifying that the technology was already made already. They very clearly said something related to NOT having the same exact experience as Ocerina of Time on the N64.

Game: Has a reference to spawn an instance of an object the moment this object is interacted with in a certain way, and was given no reference for the beginning crystals as the player has no way of interacting with them this way.

Grab the normal toads in crystals, and code them so that they have the same properties as the crystals that spawn the toads. Then break them open, and they should spawn a toad.
This reminds me of the SMB1 theory of Mario killing a Toad every single time he breaks a brick.

Speaking of which... I used to play them when I went over to a childhood friend's house. She didn't own the games herself, but the nearby library had SMG1 and eventually SMG2 disks you could loan for a week or two. I really miss those carefree playdates we would spend together playing SMG1 & SMG2.

Like you said, you can come back to this level after 100% the game. When you do that, all the toads that where is the crystal's are gone. So they got saved somehow and lived, or they just blew up into atom's 😂

The moment the lightning strikes, there is no longer Toad. They becomes crystal. Whether this is death or not is a matter of semantics, but truly, all you can grant them is annihilation.

When I emulated this game on PC having not played the original for years I spent ages thinking my game was bugged as I couldn't break them out, forgetting that you don't unlock spin until you meet rosalina

UGH I SAID GO AWAY I DID 1 QUINTILLION PACIFIST ROUTES ALREADY
Even though we did somehow successfully free the toads from the crystallized form without the spin ability, they never stayed that way before long being hit eventually and turned into crystallization form again. Also Princess Peach clearly showed that she had the power to unthaw and thaw the toads at will as well. It also more specifically made me sort of look at the specific cutscene in a completely different way for a little bit of time afterwards, with another completely different toad saying something along the lines of now you have done angering Princess Peach, let her rage calm down first before you preferably encounter her first. I believe that she also placed up a barrier around the castle anyways, so we could not even get any closer even if we wanted to as well.
