    It is seriously impressive to see that you replaced this back glass in this horribly designed phone. Just like you say, the back panel seems to be the hardest part to remove. I am happy to see that Apple did a better job with the successor. This iPhone 11 design is just really bad.

      As someone who repairs phones and has done this, it's entirely true. It sucks. You have to remove every single little metal clip, screw, whatever, and you end up with a huge parts tray that you better not mix ip.
      And buying an expensive laser machine is not the solution. Often, the glues to glue the glass to the aluminum aren't strong enough and it ends up separating.
      The real solution is for Apple to stop doing this (they did it in the base model 14 but now the glass is serialised) but of course, it means more expensive repairs and higher chance that customers will just buy a newer iPhone, so it makes business sense to be evil.

    Good to know that aftermarket back housings are easier to remove and replace than the factory ones. The factory one is a really bad design choice - you shouldn't need lasers to remove a piece of glass when Samsungs have their glass removable via a heat plate and careful removal of the glass.

    When a phone comes back to you for a second repair, it's time to suggest a case to the owner. Glass slabs can feel pretty nice, but they're slippery as snot and quite fragile. Cases cost far less than parts.

    You didn’t mention that those aftermarket housings usually have horrible quality compared to the original ones. Screws often don’t match the original points and the anodizing much less durable. The phone scratches easier. The back glass is also much wicker so it’s much easier to break second time.

      Good plastic is an infinitely better choice for the back of a phone, but no, OEM use glass to transmit a feeling of luxury onto customers, and raise the prices. Just like the useless titanium strip on the iPhone 15. I would understand a titanium case, which would be extremely robust; but titanium used as an embellishments - it is just fooling the fools. No Apple for me - I have a Xperia 1 V and a Pixel 7 Pro.

    I have a weird question, I broke my display so I got it replaced but the replacement was installed incorrectly so the black frame covers the camera making the photos horrible quality, the thing is I broke the display again (still working, just cracks) and I don't currently have the money for a replacement, is it possible to remove the display without breaking it and then install it correctly?

    Personally I’d put glue around the camera lens ring after putting the back on to try and further water proof it. I can see some liquid getting in through there if the phone got soaked

    stupid question Hugh how much would you typically charge for a back glass replacement of a samsung galaxy s20+ ? I looks like the back glass being glued on throughout is similar in nature to our dear apple counterpart here..... something i imagine cannot be particularly cheap if not in material cost then certainly in labour.

    Well there is noway im replacing that much glue all on the entire back glass,,i'd do the perimiter and the perimeter of the metal shielding under back glass as this would be sufficient glue for such a repair.

    can you not use plastic instead of glass for the back panel so it don t break easily?

    • @midnightquad
      @midnightquad 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The reason Apple used glass is because Steve Jobs had a prototype of the iPhone 1 with a plastic screen in his pocket, but it would scratch against things like keys and coins.

    Using glass on the back of phones is in general a stupid idea. It has no true benefits over other materials, that don't shatter but cause various issues when shattered and when you want to change it. And I have a suspicion, the plan of the makers was to add an easily breakable component to phones, which many people don't bother to get repaired (if they can anyway) and so selling more phones. Afterall we know, that sustainability isn't a priority for most big companies. Profit, it always comes to pure profit.
    I believe my now 6 years old phone also has a glass back panel, but it never broke because I am always having it in a thick case. And even if it did, I wouldn't care, because it doesn't matter under the case. Visuals are secondary at best, my phone could be beaten to the moon and back, I would not change anything, if it still worked fine and had a usable screen.
