  • This was a really awesome and one of a kind experience. It's neat to see behind the scenes of railway's, especially if it means I can see my favorite steam locomotive H1-B Hudson 2816.

      @@tryhardanimationsstudios5167 the locomotive was decommissioned by CPs last CEO, that late E. Hunter Harrison. It was stored in the pavilion in downtown Calgary for a long time before being moved to the heritage building in Ogden.
      The locomotive needs it 15 year boiler inspection to run again. The rules for steam (since the 40s) have been every 15 years or extensive number of miles, the locomotive is to receive an inspection to ensure it doesn't need major repairs. 2816 needs that, plus the various tests so it can be recertified to run again. Even though it is in good enough condition to be fired up tomorrow thanks to CP taking great care of it, legally it can't run until it is recertified.

      @@ghost_pine_film_productions CP needs to wake up and see the world needs The Empress. If I owned her and a CP passenger fleet I would run her out of Toronto to Vancouver and back doing a weekly service.

    • @ghost_pine_film_productions
      @ghost_pine_film_productions  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KTHedleyBassoon CP knows the Empress is there, and they're taking good care of it. It is expensive to maintain and run a steam locomotive. If you ran cross country every week with that locomotive, you would need to charge $20,000 a ticket just to pay for the expenses, never mind profit. You would need a water truck at every crew change point and a fuel truck at every second crew change point. You would need to make routine stops to pump more grease cakes in the drivers, and oil the side rods. You would need to make sure that where it was held at night it could be kept indoors or at least wiped down before the crews left.
      Plus it would get in the way of freight trains, meaning it would get put in every siding eating up more time, so it would take at least seven days to get from the east to the west.
      Keep in mind - I love steam, and one day I hope to work on steam locomotives. But the railroads didn't stop using steam because they weren't cool, they stopped using them because steam chews through money. It costs the railways more to run a steam locomotive for one day, than it does to run a diesel for six months.
      As awesome and alive as steam is, it's just not practical in the modern world. Its purely for nostalgia and show.

      Well 2816 is in perfect working order, but every 15 years a steam locomotive has to have a boiler inspection of the tubes and flues and all that. It's a Canadian railraod regulation that hasn't changed since 1940. A major overhaul is not necessary as it was put to bed properly and was kept indoors at all times. I believe those passenger cars are part of the Heritage program's future but they could also be going on Keith Creel's private train. I'm not sure the story of the CN car. Nore do I know any of the names of those passenger cars outside. I know 2816's canteen (auxiliary water tender) is under the white tarp and tool car number 29114 is out there.

      The RCP can still be rented out by the public, they are just kept inside out of harms way. Hunter Harrison left a car outside and it got really sun faded, so CP wrapped it and turned it into "the spirit of tomorrow". Keith Creel, the new CEO of CP, has his own personal train called CP1. It is non-accessible to the public, but he has a bar car, a gym car, and a sleeper. As well as his own tail car that looks like a theater car. He also uses RCP cars VAN HORNE, KILLARNEY, STRATHCONA, CRAIGELLICHIE, & MAJOR ROGERS. The F units 4106, 4107, and B unit 1900, as well as rebuilt FP7A 1401 all pull the Heritage fleets train. And I hope 2816 will pull it again one day soon!

    • @ghost_pine_film_productions
      @ghost_pine_film_productions  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem pjasyl, I'm not quite sure how new MAJOR ROGERS is but it has had its seats redone recently, it is a coach car. MTH does not make models of VAN HORNE, KILLARNEY, or STRATHCONA, however Golden Gate Depot make super cool and scale 85' heavy weight cars in O scale. I have almost the full set. Now they, as are the MTH cars American prototypes, which is accurate for the KILLARNEY as it is a Pullman car and is 101 years old. When I get my new layout up, I will post a video of my O scale 2-10-4 Selkirks, 4-8-4 K1a northern 3100, and my O scale 4-6-4 H-1b 2816. And my dad is customizing a Golden Gate Depot observation car called MOUNT KEY. If you would like MTH Observation cars in those names, get a hold of Black Cat decals, they make Canadian Pacific decals for passenger equipment, and all their decals are very nice!

Pacific 2317 needs a full re-restoration. I'm not sure the condition of 2837. The good news is, that what ever CP does with 2816, they can't scrap it. It needs a boiler inspection which is a $200,000+ job and it takes a long time to complete as they have to take out all the tubes inspect the flume sheets and firebox checking for any damaged stay bolts. Also at that time F7a 1401 just got a brand new prime mover and genorater as well as a new paint scheme so it was kind of like a test for 1401's new equipment.

      Boiler inspection is just inspecting the boiler for problems. It involves no rebuilding. Overhaul is where the entire engine is dissasembled and completely restored. 2816 got an overhaul in 1999. It just needs some repairs and modifications, not an overhaul.

      Sort of Grand Trunk Studios, she needs a full boiler inspection where they completely dismantle, test and replace (if need be) every part of the boiler. It's mandatory in Canada for a steam locomotive on class 1 railway to have this every 15 years. These rules haven't changed since the 1940's.

    • @ghost_pine_film_productions
      @ghost_pine_film_productions  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, in Canada, there was a law put in place back in the 30s that a steam locomotive needs a boiler inspection after 15 years of active service, or every couple hundred thousand miles. The laws haven't changed since. 2816 is is good enough condition to be fired up now, but because of that law it must go through the inspection. Also it needs a few things repaired internally, as steam locomotives are super complex machines.

    • @atsfevan0242
      @atsfevan0242 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ghost_pine_film_productions I see well thanks and its the law that all steam locomotives have to go through an overhaul every 15 years why exactly?

    • @ghost_pine_film_productions
      @ghost_pine_film_productions  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Evan's Meazord reviews: Not an overhaul, boiler inspection. It is done incase a flume tube, the crown sheet, stay bolts, flume sheets, fire bricks, steam exhaust pipes, or anything else inside the boiler is on the verge of failing, they can catch it early. Problems with the flume tubes and sheets can cause excess pressure in the boiler and flood the fire box. Stay bolt failure causes leaks between the bolt heads and the interior of the boiler jacket resulting in rust. Failure of fire bricks can lead to poor firebox insulation, thus resulting in lower temperatures and less efficiency. Crown sheet failure can result in extinguishing the fire, or a boiler explosion. So to avoid misshap and possibly expensive or fatal repairs down the road, they check the whole boiler for any problems, and fix them accordingly.

      Oh yes sorry, I was in the middle of moving. 2816 was put to bed properly so it is real easy to fire up and run, however, the same rules apply now for steam engines as they did in the 1940's. Which is every 15 years it's boiler must be inspected. During a boiler inspection, everything in the boiler is removed, tested, and then put back. So after the boiler inspection they could run her. Everyone at CP wnats to see her run so I would say yes, she will run again!
