0:52 fun fact, my dad (who used to be the engineered projects division lead for CP western division before they laid most of their civil engineering off and is also a rail safety ambassador with operation lifesaver) has found a picture of the actual last spike being pounded with the actual crew, roughly 10 miles from where that famous picture was taken
UPDATE: That CPKC has revealed their new print scheme basically like the CP livery but the back given a Yellow and Black the Beaver logo now has CPKC on the bottom replacing the 1881 label and given a CP KCS & KCSM on the top and their Paint Scheme was a bit of a wreck off of CN's Livery
I'm just wondering if the CPKCS will do what BNSF did and go from iconic paint schemes to a traffic cone inspired eyesore. CPKCS is also very boring and unimaginative branding so my hopes aren't up on this one.
We're getting on a Canadian Pacific trend here! I didn't know the history of the beaver for Canadian Pacific until now. I've seen the beaver multiple times before whenever I was lucky to see a CP train go by. I think I appreciate it more now.
On a side note, the green boxcars with the pine tree logo were phased out, after Maine Central filed a lawsuit against CP for violating a copyright on the pine tree logo they used at the time. It was likely sparked by a rivalry at the time between CP and MEC, since the Bangor and Aroostook was trying to divert as much traffic as possible to CP, which is a much longer story in itself. Hence why the cars became known as “lawsuit scheme” cars.
AmtrakGuy365, your videos are going from strength to strength. footage choice & quality, editing, sound & music.... keep 'em coming! hugely enjoyable (and very informative) - many thanks all the way from the UK. NICE ONE!
This is a great series focusing on the graphic design aspect of railroads. Glad to see my favorite Canadian Class I being featured for this episode. I hope that with the CPKC merger, the heritage of both railroads are still kept in tact. It would be a real shame of they got rid of the iconic beaver. Why can't they just let KCS be its own railroad, or at least absorb it with CP without getting rid of CP's image.
After the merger with KCS had those wonder if the new logo for the joint venture is three flags painted to the sides of locomotives when those still have memories of the Pac man era.
I am so glad I subscribe to your channel! I really thought that I knew a lot about trains and the history of them. Every time I look at your videos I realize that I don't and learn something new each and every time. So grateful to you and appreciate all the information that you provide to all of us who are true fans of trains.
I really enjoy these history of a design videos. Kansas City Southern would make a neat next installment as it has gone through quite a bit of re-branding throughout its history.
I really appreciated this video. I grew up during the multi-mark era, so to me it still seems like the "standard" CP logo. But this video helps me understand that multimark was actually a fairly brief stage in the history of their branding. The obvious comparison is with CN's "noodle" logo - both the multimark and CN noodle are "modernist" logos from the 60s. The CN modernist logo has certainly lasted a lot longer!
Excellent presentation of CP’s history! I’ve always loved the beaver/maple leaf shield, as it tells the whole story of a hard-working railroad located in Canada. I’ve subscribed and am looking forward to future Canadian railroad presentations. 🇺🇸 🚂
I once had a bachmann Ho scale 2-8-0 spectrum that I modified with a grey boiler, a multimark painted on the back of the tender, and Canadian Pacific lettering on the tender near the back of the water tank. I numbered it 642. I disassembled it in 2018 and swapped the shells for some from a Bachmann Southern Railway 630. I don’t have any pictures of 642 because I didn’t have phone with a decent enough camera yet.
For those railway fans that wish to see the iconic CP multimark again, rest assured, it still exists today! Although in a modified version, by Carnival Cruises. For many years, I often thought there was something vaguely familiar with Carnival Cruises' logo. After reading the book "$elling the $ea", I found out why. According to the book "$elling the $ea", Carnival Cruises bought their first cruise ship from Canadian Pacific, the Empress of Canada. The Empress of Canada had CPR's multimark on it's funnel. Carnival Cruises liked this logo so much that they kept it. CPR said "No, that's our logo.", so Carnival changed it a little. They rounded the point of the triangle, made the semi circle thinner, and the background square is no longer a square, it's now the base colour for the background of the logo. The black on white on green colour scheme was also changed (green being used for ships), to blue on white on red, matching the colours of the US flag. Have a peek at any Carnival ship's funnel and you'll see the similarity!
It is worth noting that the maroon, yellow, and grey livery (at least the diesel version) was a standard Baldwin design, and saw some use on locomotives for other railroad, such as the Copper Range Railroad in Upper Michigan.
CP won't over take CN. CN has positioned in markets and is the ONLY railway that owns tracks across the entire north American continent. (Canada, US&Mexico)
@@HIGHIRONPRODUCTIONS25 how is canadian national railway less of a canadian railway than canadian pacific? i prefer can when buying my models mainly because i’m a bcrail fan (all their variations through the years but bcrail is easiest to type) so i lean to bc locomotives for the ex bc rail part of it
You should also do a history of The Canadian from Montreal/Toronto to Vancouver that tells history on how exists since Canadian Pacific started it and then Via Rail.
Maroon is not the same colour as Tuscan Red. Maroon is a purple more red than blue and Tuscan Red is red desaturated with some brown to be more like rust.
Great video, thank you. Living in the UK have a big 'soft spot' for Milwaukee Road, Soo Line and CP, and have n scale models of various locomotives but do have CP engines wearing all four logos. Two rail companies that are bottom of the list for me are CN and UP - neither do anything for me in terms of livery style - the only UP model I have is that of 4141 George HW Bush.

still angry that canadian pacific never ordered any Beyer Garratt Locomotives cause canada was the only part of the british empire not to use Beyer Garratt Locomotives
Amtrak do you think you can do a video on the history of the Royal Hudson class? In my opinion they are one of the most elegant locomotives ever made, and it is one of the least locomotives talked about
i've managed to see myself an old multimark and action red GP9U's on OSR, both seperate units and patched, but still a good chance to reflect on their history.
Some CP SD40-2s still have multimark logo. But watching the ongoing retirements of CP Rail SD40-2s we'll not be able to see the multimark logo within a couple of years.
On my Model Railroad, I run CN and CP Rail. My CP Rail has the Multi-Mark Design due to the Yellow Cabooses. Since It looks like Pac-Man,All of my Engines and rolling Stock received the Pacman Eye.
I really think the CP Rail and packman logo had a great staying power, legibility and would fit into today's design (sans serif, large typefaces and bold)
There was a bulletin out saying that the beaver was retired in 2007 on the first ES44AC class. This was supposedly because the logo wouldn’t fit due to the expanded wings and grills of that class.
The multimark did not "disappear" from CP. It was SOLD along with the airline. For several years it was used in place of the vowel In "Canadixn" on the Canadian Airlines planes, where the x was either A in English or the E in Francais. The Golden Rat emblem includes the date 1881, which made Omer Lavallee's blood boil as corporate historian. His comment was that he would be willing to attend centenaries from1981 to at least 1996 in each community celebrating CPR's arrival there, or corporate significant dates which happened over that 15 year span. He swore there was no one date that marked the centennial of CPR.
Canadian national: I am formed by other railroads that almost failed Canadian pacific: I owned a trucking company, hotel, boat service, and a fucking airline. Your power can’t compete with mine
CN also had an airline: Trans-Canada Airlines, founded in 1937 and called Air Canada since 1965, was a wholly-owned subsidiary of CN until 1975, when it became a separate crown corporation in its own right. AC was privatized in 1989.

The Multi-mark is so iconic - I vividly remember seeing those locomotives well into the 90's. Bring it back!

It would be great if they did a multimark heritage unit!
