What i am thinking is that your putting force on the piston. When you start it the piston firings slowly. When you rev it the piston goes Faster. Turning the bike of while the piston is moving hard is not to well, When you turn it on it will shoot the flame due to the hard work on the piston. I hope you understood this.

What u are doing is basically a ignition cut to an extent allowing more fuel to go into the exhaust that’s not getting burnt bc u are turning the ignition off and when u quickly turn it back on it’s burning the fuel that’s in ur exhaust

Its from excess fuel in motor when you shut it off and then turn back on it then burns off the fuel. Its not good for it actually from what I hear it can burn up the valves but I dunno if thats true. I personally just wouldnt do that often

What he said above but here is the full explanation in detail.
When you kill the engine the sparkplug stops firing, but the motor is still rotating so it pulls fuel from the carb into the engine. The raw unburned fuel goes in the cylinder and back out down thru the exhaust. That fuel is still raw and unburned. Once you turn the switch on the sparkplug starts to fire again. Once the exhaust valve open and spits hot burned exhaust down the pipe it mixes with the unburned fuel and it ignites that fuel inside the exhaust pipe and muffler. When that fuel ignites inside the exhaust it spits flames out the muffler.
Yes it can be bad for the valves, it can also cause the packing inside your FMF to burn up and the muffler will need to be repacked. Even thou "it's bad" it's not really the end of the world. You can have fun and do it every once in a awhile if you want just for grins and giggles. If you do that all the time everyday, then yes you can cause damage down the road. Another trick is it quickly do what you did while your riding right as you shift gears. If your timing is right, on some engines you will get that cool backfire and spit out flames as you shift gears.
Pretty much any car or bike that produces that backfire is because raw fuel went down the exhaust and ignites. Not good for cars with catalytic converters. Take care bro!
