    It's interesting how many people join the Batfamily DESPITE Bruce's objections. All three (kinda four if you count Helena Bertinelli as one) Batgirls, Tim Drake, Carrie Kelley, Jason when he comes back as Red Hood. Damien gets unceremoneously dropped on his doorstep.
    Yeah, Bruce has a big surrogate family, but by and large, it found him.

    The reason I love Tim Drake as a character so much was kinda touched on by Sal. Ignoring editorial and meta stuff, Tim Drake had no Sad Backstory other than witnessing the Graysons’ deaths and having distant parents. He just saw that Batman was the hero Gotham needed and that Robin was integral for Batman to work. He’s like Superman in that he needed no tragic backstory to be a hero, he just saw that he could help. He loved Robin, sure, but he never planned to take Jason’s place or really wanted it. He took some karate classes and that was it. He wasn’t as strong as Jason and wasn’t acrobatic like Dick, he was maybe slightly more athletic than the average kid. He hunted Dick down to become Batman’s partner when he noticed that Batman was getting out of control and reckless. Both Gordon and Alfred recognizes that Batman was different. Alfred took it a step further by pointing out that Bruce would die if he kept up at the pace he was going. When Dick rejected his old position, Tim had no choice but to become Robin. After this story, Tim wasn’t even supposed to put the uniform back on until Bruce said he was ready. I was impressed with DC’s restraint by introducing a new Robin, but not having him be Robin until he had been trained enough. Not to mention that Bruce REALLY didn’t like Tim AT ALL for awhile. Their partnership really grew over time at its own pace until the father-son relationship they got in the late 2000’s. It felt earned. When Bruce offered to adopt Tim the second time after Tim had rejected him the first time a year or two prior was just *chef’s kiss* This is already too long, so I’ll stop. I just miss the Batfamily era of the late 80’s to the late oughts so much 😭

    Lonely Place of Dying is a better story than a Death in the Family. Wolfman and Pérez create a really nice narrative on why the mantle of Robin is so important and should be a constant in the Batman mythos.

    I remember when Tim Drake debuted. It was so strange to see a new Robin. I liked him, and felt like it was great new character. They really should have stopped after Tim. Dick was grown up, leaving Bruce alone. Jason was dead, showing Bruce the risk of his failure. Tim was a redemption and the realization he can try again.

    • @makisdimakis333
      @makisdimakis333 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I think the reason they didn't stop with Tim Drake was that Grant Morrison's run was a hit and as a result of that they kept Damian as canon. Tim Drake is the definitive Robin for me, he has the best Robin stories. A Lonely Place of Dying is a very good example

    • @infernaldisdain8051
      @infernaldisdain8051 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Super JLK What else is there for him though? At least Tim was older when he stopped being Robin, Damian was still supposed to be young and not only would his father want to look out for him, if he's with Batman, what would he be besides? We need a Robin for Branding, but Tim is getting older in the narrative so unless they de-aged him (which would be a mistake) he would probably become a solo hero anyways.

      Infernal Disdain I agree, Damian becoming Robin was the only way for his character to not clutter the scene with ANOTHER masked Batfam character and what else would you do with a 10 year old Batman side character? I only wish that they had chosen a different way of doing it instead of completely disrespecting and sidelining Tim’s character and ruining his relationship with Dick. But then again, it fit Damian’s character with how much he hated Tim and was such a shitty person at the time. Tim was 17 when he was fired as Robin, so I think he could’ve gotten at least another year or two in-universe as Robin since Dick was fired at college-aged. I’m indecisive about the whole thing, but I guess that IS how stories work.

This is the story that introduced me to Tim Drake (before BTAS Season 4) and I’ve maintained that he is the last and only Robin after Jason Todd. Tim Drake is the best Robin ever. Hands down. Dick is good but better as Nightwing and Jason should stay in the grave.

    I'm typically not a fan of comics as a serialized medium, *but* _A Lonely Place of Dying_ is a great example of how _Batman/Detective Comics_ can work really well in serialized form. What I call "The Jason Todd Cycle" begins with _Another Kid in Crime Alley,_ goes through _The Ambassador's Son,_ and ends with _A Death in the Family._ Even though there is a break in between, _A Lonely Place of Dying_ picks-up at the the next logical point in Batman's life. This story also illustrates that, even though Bruce may have had other people in mind to take over as Batman after he's gone, he knows that Tim Drake will take over as the "World's Greatest Detective".

    Tim Drake being named after Tim Burton is mentioned by Marv Wolfman in the trade that collects A death in the family and a lonely place of dying. I only remembered it because I read it just before reading this. Though the wording was "named for upcoming Batman director Tim Burton".

  • @jeremyharrison2842
    @jeremyharrison2842 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Finally, A lonely place of Dying. I need to remember why Tim Drake is was my favorite Robin. Since he's your favorite Robin ... can we do Robin: Joker's Wild (I don't think you've done that)
    Young Justice: Sins of Youth and Teen Titans: The Future is now
    Just some ideas. There are many excellent Tim Drake stories that DC is in my opinion hellbent on forgetting about.

    I think the Lonely Place For The Dying's banners not matching up could be on purpose. The first one black and white symbolizing Batman that slowly morphs into red and yellow. The colors of Robin

  • @MrGERONIMO2025
    @MrGERONIMO2025 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think the spines of the issues are supposed to be a transition symbolizing the oncoming of the new Robin? The first one is black and white and the last is red and yellow while the ones in the middle are kind of an in between. Or it could just be nothing I dunno.

    I hate how much they disrespect Tim Drake so much in the comics lately. He was the first Robin to get his own solo comic book and it was quite popular, he was smart enough to discover Batman's secret identity, and most of the things people associate with Robin, including the costume and the bo staff is associated with Tim Drake.

    This story is a little silly at times, but it’s really overall great. A lot of care was put into Tim Drake, arguably the best Robin. Like you stated, there was a lot of restraint. Not only with Joker, but even with Tim. There was a lot of care put into him becoming a Robin. It’s great! It’s just a shame that he’s pushed aside now. I get why Damian’s liked, I like him myself. But I wish they could find a way to make him relevant and great again. Also, yes, I would have to say that this story is lost worthy. It shows why Robin needs to stick around, and why he’s not just a silly character.
