    Azelaic acid has completely transformed my super sensitive acne prone skin. I used to get painful pimples around my chin that took weeks to heal. I tried TO’s version just to see what the ingredient would do for me. I noticed so much progress and eventually increased to a prescription 15%. It’s the only active my skin tolerates without getting dry while also effectively treating acne. Happy Thursday Kelly! 😊

    I can definitely vouch for Azeliac acid. I’m a doctor and have prescribed this multiple times for acne, especially patients who are skin of colour and hyperpigmentation is an issue, and those who cannot tolerate things like Epiduo and BP which are so strong. I used BP once and broke out in a blotchy rash for like 2 weeks.

    1:40 - Oh my god finally. From all the info I have read and watched about azelaic acid (A LOT), it seems like it unclogs pores, but in a way that isn't the same as glycolic acid for example, but I couldn't find a SINGLE piece of info specifically addressing in clear language whether it's actually different or not. It seems more similar to tretinoin in this regard perhaps (at least relative to AHA/BHA).

    If you are like me and can't use pure Azelaic Acid, look into the more gentle derivative ingredient Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate (PAD). Normal AA makes me itch like crazy, but PAD is just fine.

    ive been using azelaic acid since i was pregnant 2,5 years ago and i cannot stop using it! it clears my hyperpigmentation faster than any other ingredient that ive ever tied. i vouch the naturium one, had used 3 bottles of it. im currently using the cos de baha's one. the texture is not as elegant and not as quickly to heal an active acne. but still a great alternative!

  • @satutoivonen9679

    Minor correction. Salicylic acid does have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties too. Just wanted to mention this because for me personally SA was a game changer when I first started treating my acne and it's still the back bone of my acne routine. For some reason SA has always been super easy for me to tolerate, not the slightest little irritation ever. I do also use (prescription) azelaic acid but have to be mindful of my overall skin condition when doing so. If I have any existing irritation, excema, dry patches etc. azelaic acid tends to aggrevate the problem whereas salicylic acid doesn't. I'm aware this is usually the other way around and azelaic acid tends to be better tolerated. Just wanted to put this info here so as to remind folks to try and see what works for their individual skin; sometimes it is indeed something as old and boring as SA. 😃

    • @KellyDriscoll
      @KellyDriscoll  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Perhaps it was an oversimplification to help viewers understand the differences, AA has a better track record against the acne bacteria but everyone's skin is individual and what works for us will be different and won't always conform to general studies or general advice.

    Hi Kelly I have used azelaic acid for a few years now and get 15% finnacea from my doctor. However I started with the OTC 10% and recommend most people start at a lower strength, especially for rosacea. Initially this ingredient can cause a prickling sensation on the skin, but this dissipated as my skin acclimated. There are now 5% azelaic acid products available for those with super sensitive skin btw and this is also a good starting point. I worked my way up to 15% over time and have no sensitivity at all from the higher percentage nowadays. It really has helped my rosacea immensely and I wouldn’t be without it. It’s also safe during pregnancy for those struggling with acne when so many of the other acne ingredients are not. There is also an azelaic acid derivative often used in products and it too can be effective. Best wishes x

    Chemist Warehouse ships worldwide. And they have good price. For me it's ridiculous to spend so much on 10% AA while Azclear is available for so cheap, unless you can't tolerate prescription strength. My skin loves Azclear 15% much more than TO 10%.

  • @kledi3817
    @kledi3817 ปีที่แล้ว

    i used azealic acid like a year ago from The Ordinary and LOVED the ingredient because it immediately calmed down any inflammation, it was amazing for my acne. but the formula by The Ordinary is actually terrible, way too pasty and silicon-y and doesn’t spread well at all, you need quite a lot to spread it all over the face. now a year later i’ve tried the Azealic Acid from FaceTheory which is much more expensive (30€) but it’s a thinner serum and i’m so glad i made that decision because it really does work wonders for my skin. it’s one of the few skin care products that i actually don’t feel bad about spending that much money.
    In Europe you can get 15% Azealic Acid which is a very good inbetween i feel like. 10% is a bit too weak, 20% is a little strong so 15% is just right

      I also have dry skin. It’s sensitive and I used to get flushed very easily. I don’t know whether Azaleic acid would be of benefit to your skin but I’ll share my experience.
      I didn’t pay much attention to Azaleic acid for a long time, thought it was mostly for people w acne. But I watched a video from dr Sam bunting 3-4 years ago and she described its function in helping reduce skin sensitivity. I started using the ordinary Azelaic acid 2 years ago. I didn’t really notice a change in my skin but I kept going with it. 9 or 10 months late I noticed i was experiencing a lot less redness. About 6 months ago, I reintroduced an ascorbic acid serum. I’ve never been able to tolerate them more than 2x week but now I use it 5-6x week without problem. I plan to keep it in my routine. I think it helps me reduce the number of reactive, sensitized skin episodes I experience. It’s inexpensive, not irritating since my skin got accustomed to it and easy for me to use in my routine. I take a dab of the Azelaic suspension, a pump of Stratia’s liquid gold (and in the winter whatever cream Im using). I mix them in my palm and then apply before my sunscreen. Doing it this way, I haven’t experienced pilling.
      I like the ordinary’s because as Kelley said there aren’t other actives in it. So many seem to be geared to acne or congested skin rather than dry, sensitive skin.
      I’ve heard it is useful for melasma and rosacea as well as general hyperpigmentation. It’s not an exfoliating acid so it wouldn’t replace your lactic acid. It also doesn’t need to be at a low ph, like the exfoliating acids, so it doesn’t contribute to irritation that way.

      If you're happy with your current routine, products and results there is no reason to add another active into the mix!

      @KellyDriscoll I never know what acid fits me best. So I dabble in all of them! Lactic is my ride or die, salicylic acid is great for my pores. I suffer from cystic acne.
      OK I'll stop rambling!!!!

    How does aa compare to glycolic?

      As mentioned, it has skin cell regulation, redness reduction, and brightening benefits, which are also GA benefits. AA is generally better tolerated by sensitive folks than AHAs.

    In Europe we can get 15-20% otc, I looove the Isispharma metroruboril az, the most elegant formula with additional beneficial ingredients, makes me laugh when other brands complain how hard it is to formulate with aa. I got a tip from a cosmetic formulator that in the US you can get some 15% aa products otc like Melazepam, they just don't outright disclose the percentage, apprently it's not an official limit but poses a problem due to implied drug claims.

      @@marionallen2222 Oh goodness! I looked it up- that looks really nice! I’m gonna get it with my next Ulta order. I’d ordered one from YesStyle, but it has some fragrance type ingredients I was worried about. That one looks even better! Thanks for the recommendation.
