The way Brad Delp was able to hold the High D and carry it it to to High E without losing ANY of his vocal range is absolutely unprecedented not many vocalists could do that. His voice was able to harmonize with the guitar.
    So incredible.

I never fully understood the meaning of More Than A Feeling until the day we lost Brad Delp to suicide. Once you know that, and you listen to More Than A Feeling in the pain in his voice as he seems for us, and only when you have lost the love of your life will you realize just how powerful this song can be. This song has deeply affected me for 16 years, the day my Marianne walked away. How to stop listening to music for several years, because it just hurt too much. It's amazing how much music affects your soul. Now, 16 years later, music fills my soul with joy again. A couple of notes on Boston, Brad Delp is considered to be one of the four or five best voices in rock, along with Freddie Mercury, Steve Perry, Robert Plant and Bob Seger. Tom Scholz, the band's founder and lead guitarist is an MIT educated engineer. He was always a tinkerer and built most of his own equipment. He is the inventor of distortion pedals for electric guitars. When you're listening to that amazing guitar riff, you're listening to a brilliant engineer who literally made that sound possible. The next time you relisted to this song, notice that the notes that Brad Delp hits with his voice transition immediately into the sound of the guitar. They recorded this song in their own house in their own Studio. This is what rock and roll means. It's about passion, Love & Pain.

Actually, the label wanted the band to record in an LA studio, but Scholz tricked them and recorded it in his Massachusetts home studio without their knowledge. He of course later toured with the band✌

He found Brad Delp who’s unparalleled talent in singing gave the music flight into the stratosphere . In 1976, I saw Boston, at the beginning of their very first concert tour to promote their incredible first album! I met Tom and he gave me his guitar pick and metal slide bar that he used in the concert. I still have it! This album went on to become the biggest selling intro album at that time. Marianne was Tom’s Cousin. She babysat him when he was little and he had a crush on her. There will never be another band like Boston. Tom Scholz is a masterful genius. Having said that how can you not “feel some type of way” when you hear those insanely good guitar riffs and vocal high notes in this hall of fame rock song? Probably the best debut Rock album of all time. Don’t get me started on the genius level engineering of Tom Scholz and unrivaled vocal talents of Brad Delp. I get it, there is a learning curve in all of this music. Without auto tune and other engineering tricks, I’d say they did pretty darn good. This is one of the very rare songs for me that never gets old. Keep up the good work, your content is definitely enjoyable. It’s like reliving it through my own younger eyes and brain. Boston the Band is one person playing the music and one person singing all the vocals, lead and backup. Boston was the brain child of Tom Scholz, he wrote and recorded the first album in his basement. For the album he invented the rock pedal system for guitars that every guitarist now uses. He played lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass guitar, organ and some of the drums on this album. Brad Delp the singer, also sang backup on the album. So when the record companies wanted to put out the album, the requirement was that Tom hired a band and taught them how to play the songs live and that a drummer was brought in to redo some of the songs. This entire album is a masterpiece. Thanks for the great reaction and for sharing. Chris

Truly tremendous in the studio - pristine albums and a sound completely unique. They had huge problems with their Record Company after their second (or third?) album and that kept their career from advancing as it took something like 6 years to release another album and by that time much of the public had found other favorites and then grunge was about to explode reducing their impact. They also suffered with the comparison of their live sound vs their records - there’s simply no way they (or anyone) could reproduce all that amazing studio work live, particularly the vocals. I personally never saw them live but friends expressed their disappointment at their live sound vs the records. Since, I’ve seen some TH-cam videos and the sound good but Brad Delps vocals of course aren’t what’s on the records (how could they be) - that’s asking too much of anyone. So, you’ll find many people who think they created some of the greatest records in rock history and I’m in that group, but you won’t find too many that put them in the category of Led Zeppelin, The Who, Pink Floyd, etc. But music is wonderfully personal and they definitely have a big fan base who have a special place in their heart for that Boston sound.
More Boston, more Rush, more Yes, more Jethro Tull, Moody Blues, The Who and, yes…. Band Maid!!

Boston exploded onto the music scene in 1976. The back story to Boston is legend. Tom Scholtz an MIT graduate/engineer working for Polaroid Corp. built and equipped a state of the art recording studio in the basement of his rented house. There, he wrote, played every instrument and recorded all the multiple tracks to create the album. He recruited Brad Delp as led singer, Sib Hashian on drums, Barry Goudreau on guitar with Tom Scholtz on guitar, and Fran Sheehan on bass to become the group, "Boston". The B side to "More than a feeling" was "Smokin'". The album is one of the highest selling rock albums of all time. There are so many layers to this song when you listen to it and that is because of the genius of Tom Scholtz.

For many years Boston’s 1976 debut album was the biggest selling debut album in history - 17 million copies sold. Even now it’s in the top 2 or 3. EVERY song on this behemoth got airplay. One guy, a Polaroid sound engineer named Tom Scholz, who played bass guitar in local Boston area rock bands, built his own recording studio literally in his basement and recorded every song and instrument except drums. He got a couple of his buddies to 1) play the drums, and 2) sing the lyrics. Brad Delp sings all the songs as well as the back-up harmonizing. Did you notice the vocal range and control of Mr. Delp? - incredible! When Scholz signed with a record label, the label didn’t know he didn’t even have a regular band - Scholz & Delp had to put one together around them to go on tour. Their follow-up album, 1978’s “Don’t Look Back,” was a monster hit, too, selling over 7 million copies. Scholz invented several guitar sound enhancing devices (the Rockman was one of them) which became staple pieces of eqpt for many rock bands of the era. It’s really a rags to riches story and an amazing one at that. That first album is on another level - it’s like a greatest hits album. But it’s a DEBUT album! If you haven’t heard it and their follow-up, you’re in for a real treat! Unfortunately, lawsuits with the record label and controversies caused the band to suspend making additional albums for 8 years! They finally released “Third Stage” in 1986. And even after 8 years (a lifetime in the record business) it still sold over 5 million copies and produced a #1 single, “Amanda.”

When Tom wrote this song oh, he said and I quote. You know when you hear that song that takes you back to a specific time and place an indelible imprint on you forever. He decided to put his cousin Mary Ann in the song because she was his first crush.!

"That old song they used to play" "Marianne" was a song recorded by Frankie Valli and The FOur Seasons. They referring to listening to that song. Brad Delps vocals are supreme

Respectfully disagree, Tom Scholz said it was based on "Walk Away Renee" by the Left Banke.

@@stevemd6488 I know what your saying, but the lyrics to Marianne are very similar and I read about it in an interview

@@wendyt7958 Understand, but if you listen to the descending progression after "I see my Marianne walking away" it's the same as in Walk Away Renee. Anyway all good peace.

Yeah I totally get, makes sense. Sometimes interviews by different people obviously have different results LOL

@@wendyt7958 Probably because he can't actually remember exactly what was what after so long.
It's also possible that the song was one thing and the 'Marianne' reference was another entirely.

Tom Scholz, the lead guitarist, was attending MIT when he got together with other members that would become Boston. Scholz invented many of the effects pedals you hear that made up the unique sound that made up Boston. I think Scholz completed his education at MIT and founded Scholz Research & Development, Inc. to develop and market his inventions, many under the Rockman brand. Scholz holds several patents[3] related to his work at SR&D over the years. He was a real genius that went beyond music.
