The woods are the only ones who can tell the stories for sure but I've got an inkling that they were tumbled in the ice age floods (some spectacular history there!). I'm doing more research but I'm sure this wheel has already been invented, and that I just need to 'dig' for the info on it, lol. Some of the pieces are sooooo gemmy, I really have to contemplate how to cut them for maximum wowness. I had to hold off for the video and not just rush in all Karen Scissorhands and cut them all. That's so awesome that you're thinking about the identification too! You can learn so much about your woods and get close to an ID with just a hand lens. Those reds in some of the pieces are so rich and translucent. Absolutely beautiful! And, thank you for showing us the microscope images of the slices. It's so cool to still be able to see the cell structure even after mineralization.

Thanks for the microscopic studies of some of your petwood discoveries! I am fascinated by the cellular structure of those woods, frozen in petrified states of beauty. I had the fortune of being a land surveyor in the foothills of the Denver metro area during the 70's, and I would piss the other members of my survey crew off by filling the jeep with loads of petrified wood, and taking all the giant chunks back home to my sizeable rock garden. All that wood got left behind when I moved east, but I still have a couple of legacy pieces hanging around! Not too much wood here in central Indiana, but I'm keeping my eyes open! A short Blast From The Past. LOVE the DEER = in my language is called Be'na'doo. Rock is uch'chu. BTW we are originally from the Island of Guam. Rosie and I were Truly Blessed with over 20lbs of Opalized Pet-wood. 1 light color and the other a dark color. KatyDid also loves pet/wood.

There are some pretty cool pieces. I have several pieces from Edmonton Alberta along the North Sask. River, one piece is a hefty piece, found it around an old coal shelf. Hope you have a great day

@@OzoneFineArtVentures My grandson is only two but I acquired a small dinosaur slab and I put that in a case. For the small Montana agate, I am using a small piece of wood, the round ones you can buy in craft stores and make into ornaments, but I dremmeled out enough for the base of the agate to fit in so that he will see it in its beauty standing upright. I will glue it so it doesn’t pop out and he will be told both are not toys but some to just admire and enjoy. Oops just saw I could communicate in a different way that here so I will go to that other spot as well.

The three directions on that last piece, that I believe could be a Maple, are from the same specimen (including the tangential). I have come across a wider variety of species including what I believe are cypress, dawn redwood (metasequoia) , and oak. That being said, it's hard to know for sure unless you make your thin sections, check those out under the microscope, and pair them with the cell structures in the databases. All of that to come, hopefully, and I'll share it with future videos on the Petrified woods. Cheers!

Great question, maybe I should do a QandA or an informative video about the petrified woods. For a short answer, the woods from different locales both differ in species of woods but also what minerals set up in the cellular structure to permineralize or petrify the wood, and other factors such as thermal, chemical, and other natural occurrences. Each of the factors change the color and appearance of the wood as it's permineralizing. The wood can even be different values of silicification, as in agatized, jasperized, or opalized. In both Arizona and Oregon, there are woods that run the spectrum of possibilities. The famous AZ wood is rainbow colored because of the minerals and elements involved with its petrification. Oregon has some very colorful woods as well as other states. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

That being said, it's hard to know for sure unless you make your thin sections, check those out under the microscope, and pair them with the cell structures in the databases. I am new to petrified wood, my question is how is an Arizona petrified wood different from Oregon petrified wood?
Great question, maybe I should do a QandA or an informative video about the petrified woods. For a short answer, the woods from different locales both differ in species of woods but also what minerals set up in the cellular structure to permineralize or petrify the wood, and other factors such as thermal, chemical, and other natural occurrences. Each of the factors change the color and appearance of the wood as it's permineralizing. The wood can even be different values of silicification, as in agatized, jasperized, or opalized. In both Arizona and Oregon, there are woods that run the spectrum of possibilities. The famous AZ wood is rainbow colored because of the minerals and elements involved with its petrification. Oregon has some very colorful woods as well as other states. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!
