This is really an area that a person could explore for days and find a lot of fascinating material.

That place is pretty cool and seems to have plenty of jasper, if that is what you are looking for! Great tumbling material. And cows! Lots of cows! If you're looking for petrified wood, it looks like you accidentally found some. And that opal piece was cool. It was a lovely area! Thanks for the tips on this area! Thanks Jared and Sarah!
That was a favorite spot of my son and I years ago. After a good rain it's a fun spot.

You pointed at Sara and said there were her three sisters. All I saw were mountains in the background. I am kidding of course. I also liked when Sara said, "Are you talking to me or the camera?"
They were probably digging for Opals.
That first white piece he picked up looked like common opal to me but obviously it is tough to tell through a screen.
I can't rule that out here.
Lived on a dairy farm for a couple of decades growing up. So cows talk alot when stressed, hungry and calling thier calves to come eat. Nice hike, a few nice rocks. Fortification on that rock...nice stuff. Never know what you will find. Hmmm...thundereggs?

I wonder if those artificial cuts were from someone looking for specific mineral or ore deposits. It's easy to see the strata in that trench. The remote mic is doing a great job, now we can hear both sides of the rockhounding chat. If dogs could be trained to look for things like petrified wood Laika would be all about that. She clearly loves these adventures.
Moo cows moo for different reasons. Communications with other moo cows and to tell ppl theyre hungry.
Since they are free range moo, prolly communicating w/ the heard telling them there are people around and/or they found good grazing lands.

I think the area has a lot to offer but I think a person needs to spend a few days just cruising around looking at whats popping out of the ground.
One thing is for sure and that's how far those moos travel.
OHV means dirt bike, quad, side by side, ATV, UTV, any vehicle without a title that's (usually) built for the terrain. Hill climbs, the dunes, several mountains, and eastern Oregon OHV access.

Yes, they call to each other to make sure everybody is there. If they sound frantic it’s because they can’t get to their baby or older calf.
They also moo when they want feed or water or treats from their master, like apples or corn on the cob. ❤

Hey, love your adventures. Wife and I live in central oregon, and spend a lot of time exploring and collecting in all the places that it has to offer. Henderson flat was totally off my radar until the first video you shared. Being that it was only about 45 minutes from the house we headed out there. First time out we picked up some jasper, chalcedony similar to what you were seeing. Find of the day was two very nice chunks of wood. The larger piece ( about 10 pounds )mostly had light and dark brown coloring like a lot of oregon wood has, but the smaller piece is nearly a complete round segment of a limb with a combination of visible growth rings, some replacement, and nice coloring. Second trip didn't produce the same level of finds, but its a neat place that deserves more exploring.

Neat to see your experience! I visited this summer based on your old coordinates and found big seams of that tan jasper, not far from where you were here I think. If be curious to see if you find anything interesting cutting open any of your jasper -- I was fooled by the interesting weathering on the outside of pieces and just found lots of smooth (boring) tan jasper inside. Best find was a 20lb pet wood thats now in our garden, glad to have visited.
The digs are cinnabar prospects. There everywhere in central Or. I don't think those are thundereggs, though I can't explain them either. I've seen material from there sold as limbcasts, which looked identical to those, and I doubt that as well. And yes, I've gone to collect after terrific storms, only to find my zone buried in sediments. Love your videos!
They could be prospects for cinnabar I guess. They are 100% thundereggs since the exterior is rhyolite.
Forgive me, I still disagree. Not every lensing of silicates in rhyolite equates to lythophysae and thundereggs. Deeper questions regarding formation for us amateur rock nerds. Rock on!

And I spent fisrt 34 years of my life with this my back yard. Now 20 years latter and 8 mos into rockhounding in Southern nevada......what I missed out on......😢
The NW in many ways is a rockhounding paradise.
@CurrentlyRockhounding there used to be a place Called Peterson rock Garden in redmond Oregon. I remember going as a child. I'd heard someone bought it and retained the garden aspect rather than develop it. I recall mounds of rocks and live peacocks everywhere
I found a vein of quasi-jasper in a clay road cut bank, it’s in its pre-jasper- Not fully baked nor pressurized state of development. The stone is referred to as a “plastic colloid,” it literally feels and hefts like a solid polymer. It’s jasper red and is harder than a fingernail so, harder than plastic as well, but not much harder; I cannot see any crystallization with the naked eye, it looks like a fake rock. I have samples and pics of the road cut.
This time of year they are calling in there babies. The babies are old enough to wander around pretty far off so they are just calling them back😊
Do you ever find Jet in those areas?
Husband and i are already planning a trip to this place next month jasper is his favorite so i had to indulge him 😊

Those pits look like some old prospects, but for what? A clue on the map you put up does show one mine location called Gray Butte. A search turned up that it was a cinnabar/mercury mine or prospect discovered in 1942.

Subtlety fancy little rocks. I was really rooting for you on the wood, but those jaspers are not too bad. If nothing else a piece for future projects isn't bad. Weather has been holding up pretty well for the road adventures.

I LOVE that part of Oregon so much. The amount of things that people can do out there is mind blowing, and to top it off, there's damn near always a great view at every corner. I was out there in June as well, but more just as a means to road trip than rockhounding, but I'm surely gonna hit up that location later this year before the park area closes for the winter :-)

This makes me want to go back out to the Hauser geode beds so badly! Winter cant come soon enough!

@@CurrentlyRockhounding i usually try to spend two weeks out there every winter. Ive wandered all over the southwestern end of the beds and have even found one (broken) football sized geode sitting on the surface (those are super rare though, this was in a far off area that doesnt see a lot of traffic).
It is definitely worth the trip, there is fire agate to the east and bacon jasper in the southwest, ive taken my ford escape out there and, although it was slow going in some areas, ive made it out there every time. I have seen people take minivans out there (i wouldnt recommend that though haha).
I live in rural Wiltshire in the UK and the local farmers female cows tend to moo alot if they are due to be milked, are in heat or they have not long been separated from their calves.

Do you guys ever dig for your prizes or only surface pick? I can’t remember seeing you all digging but…my memory isn’t what it used to be. Also, Sarah always finds the best pieces. Sorry bud, but you need her to come along.
When they come to visit again, I'll make sure they are digging lol
We do when the site warrants it, some places you're better of covering lots of ground and others you are better off digging.

It was bad for a little bit but it has mostly blown out now.
That excavation scar may be the remains from a cistern being placed there to provide water for grazing animals. Not uncommon to see in Central Oregon on BLM land.
Could the trench be for water/ flash flood diversion
Perhaps. One thing's for sure is that it was a lot of work.
Recently picked up some great Flat Jasper in Prineville. Is there anything you can do with it; assuming it doesn't take a polish?

Lol, I incorrectly saw, in your title, Henderson, Flat Jasper🙂. I collected a very similar rock to your Thunder Eggs. They are, I think, low quality Thunder Eggs and inside there is, what appears to be, a matte jasper type material. The hillside was covered with it!@@CurrentlyRockhounding
