My mother used to make stuffed cabbage. Similar ingredients with the addition of rice, but I believe she cooked them in the oven as with stuffed bell peppers.
As others have commented, our family also had a stuffed rolled cabbage recipe. Ours used cooked rice mixed in with uncooked ground beef/ground pork, as well as chopped onions, a bit of shredded carrot, some chopped parsley, a bit of salt and pepper, and an egg to bind it all together. The cabbage leaves were rolled, without a toothpick, then a can of tomato sauce was poured overtop, with some garlic powder and salt and pepper, and it was baked in a moderate oven till the flavors had all melded and the cabbage leaves were soft and the meat still tender. It was simple, basic food, and every family in the Midwest had their own version. My understanding is the recipe began in the Middle East then spread across eastern Europe and beyond. (And the Midwest is full of families whose heritage is Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Romanian, Lithuanian, etc. on and on.) Your version looks delicious, too, and I absolutely love the trick of thinning the cabbage leaves to make them more easily rolled - and that you then included the scraps in the soup. Just wonderful, and I can't wait to try your version, which I think I will make tonight, actually, since I happen to have all the ingredients on-hand. Thank you, and Happy New Year, Taiji-san.
My mom added rice in the meat mix maybe grated carrots and polish kielbasa cut into coins to cook out side the rolls with some tomatoes to stew. She didn’t do potatoes and all that to really make a soup with the cabbage rolls. I just love cabbage rolls in general. Solid tip to thin the one end of the cabbage to make it easier to roll. Think I’ll go make some.
LOL, Taiji the slurp alerts are very considerate and appreciated! These cabbage rolls seem very tasty. I'm going to make them using a vegetarian ground and will absolutely be using the canned tomatoes.
Kohlrouladen kamen mir immer zu aufwendig vor, auch wenn ich die gerne esse. Aber dein Video lässt das so einfach aussehen und hat ich motiviert die zu machen. Dankeschön! ❤
Happy New Year! I always thought cabbage rolls originated from central Europe like Poland / Ukraine area. Interesting how this dish travelled! My favortie version is a butter, onion and rice version.
Reminds me of Rusian/Polish/Eastern European dishes like Golubtsi/Gołąbki/Galumpki, according to a simple google search they stem from Jewish Cabbage Roll recipes dating back 2000 years. They probably made their way to Japan during the Meiji Restoration in the 1800's
Really love your videos, so great japanese receipes! Also, you seem so gentle! Do you live near French boarder in Germany, cause many of your ingredients have some french words on it (clue: french here ! Le Japon est un pays avec une culture véritablement passionnante. Hakkeyoi!)
Ooooh this is awesome! Adding this to my ready-to-eat freezer list (see below). Is it possible to wrap the rolls twice with cabbage to add more greens? Would that change the cooking time? Thanks so much for sharing this. I like to make larger amounts with the goal of freezing single portions, especially soups in the colder months. On a hectic day there's still something whole and healthy to eat that is just as fast as a frozen pizza. The practice has been life-changing. Saying that, it's common to have big chest freezers in the US so depending where you are, your mileage may vary. I don't know much about canning but it seems to me this recipe might be a good candidate for that as well (perhaps with smaller rolls).

It’s definitely different from my grandma s German version. Funny fact that this is eaten in Japan as well, especially in the pre-TH-cam era when everybody can cook all countries kitchens. I will try it for sure. Is this 100% your mummies recipe or isn’t it influenced by the fact you live inSourhern (?) Germany too? Thanks for the Video:)
I've seen a few of your videos, one thing I've noticed and it's quite bugging me which is Overexposure of Highlights. Can you try getting a decent softbox with 150W light and adjust the video camera settings? You can follow the guides of "how to set up a camera for an interview".

Same my mom added rice as well and polish kielbasa cut into coins outside as well as tomatoes to stew.
Rice in the filling?? Interesting, but also sounds good!
@@taijiskitchen Yes. It was probably to make it more filling.

O! Polskie gołąbki! Tylko beż ryżu, ale z ryżem😉👍

oh, so old?!?! didn't know that this was jewish recipe!!
@@taijiskitchen indeed, I knew about it being a Russian dish from personal experience but it being that old surprised me lol

In Russia it is called GOLUBCI and it's very famous traditional dish, but also rice should be inside
didn't know that so many other countries have very similar dish!!

thank you!
is that Japanese? is that Shokupan? I will put it on the list, thanx!
Thank you for the recipe Taiji - what would be the non-tomato variation?

thank you!@@taijiskitchen
Hi, I just found out about the earthquake - I hope you and yours are all well! Love the videos.
it was far away from where my family live, so we only felt shaking. thank you for your message.

no this is my moms, which is also from her mom, so actually 100% my grandmas, meaning we had this at least 40 years ago!!
Lithuanians have the same dish but meat is mixed with rice. And it's called Little Doves 😊
Hi do you have a book with your recipe or there is a book you can racomend for japanese cousine??
In Poland we call it gołąbki!
I've seen a few of your videos, one thing I've noticed and it's quite bugging me which is Overexposure of Highlights. Can you try getting a decent softbox with 150W light and adjust the video camera settings? You can follow the guides of "how to set up a camera for an interview".
Can it be fried?
ммм бабушкины голубцы
Please, May You Tell Me The Specific Potatoes Used?
Jak śmiesz kraść polskie Gołąbki?!
ihmo this recipe comes from germany
it’s very popular in Ukraine
oh really??
also with tomatoes?
Can you use chicken?
Of course. Have a friend of Jewish extraction and he makes them with chicken every once in a while. The ones with ground turkey are more flavorful.
of course!!
Anyone came from the call and just ended up here
This is a polish dish
What is your major reason to cook?.
Slurp alert ❤❤❤😂😂😂😂😂😂
