- So Sunderland lost its last ship yard back in 1988 , let’s go and try and find any old ones that are still left.. My dad worked in the shipyards in the 50 s until immigrating to Australia in the mid60s he used to talk about the shipyards so often with us three boys sadly they’ve passed in 2005 and 2006 but his spirit still lives on inside us three boys👍🇦🇺

Great video mate. My dad worked in the shipyards. He used to show me around all the time and take me on the ships and in the yards

The SS Torrens, sailing ship built by Sir James Laings and Sons yard, Deptford. Held the blue ribband for fastest sailing between the UK and Australia. The pub Saltgrass was over the road from Laings Yard. many a good lunch time spent in there in the fifties

Hi Terry, that video takes me back to when I worked at Sunderland Shipbuilders. I served my time as a Shipwright at Deptford Shipyard. I also worked at Doctors and North Sands ( Thompsons Shipyard) good memories. I'm coming up sixty nine now, I don't live in Sunderland now but still class it as my home town ( city). The Shipyard in South Wick was Austin and Pickersgill . Where Leighber Cranes is was Deptford ( Sir James Lainge) Shipyard. I've had a canny few pints in the Salty. Thanks for the memory and the video Terry.

A ship called the Manchester Faith was built by Austin and Pickergil in 1959 but later changed its name to Ilkon Tak. In 1974 it appeared in a episode of Columbo called the Conspirators . Just one more thing it was broken up in Karachi in 1982.

I served my millwright Apprenticeship with J.L.Thompsons Ship Builders 1953-1958 it was where the National Glass Museum now stands, expat Geordie, Canada. Keep the videos coming Mara.

You need to go behind Bonners Raff to get down on the water side. It's the apartments opposite the Echo 24 building. You can then walk to the uni and the glass centre

Av sneaked in that shipyard before did a video of the old cars, just jump fence at far side nd run along, we spoke to security nd he said he's not allowed out of hut ,so we just went for it. The shipyard building is massive inside, I walked around filming nd forgot to press record 😂😂😂😂

7:37 in...that was a ship factory where ships were built in a dry dock, on completion the dock was flooded and the completed ship then floated out rather than launch them down a slipway in the traditional manner.
I think Austin and Picky's owned it.
Korea destroyed British shipbuilding as they were paying their workers about 5 bob a week and the UK couldn't compete.

Sunderland shipbuilders who became north east shipbuilders owned Pallion shipyard, Picky's was across opposite
