    Edison Format sounds like the way to go. That era was my favorite Yugioh era. Yugioh really came into its own while keeping the power level fun and approachable. I could still read the cards without squinting

      Tengu Plant > Edison > Goat imho. BTW i agree on the cards text issue a lot.
      New Yugioh Cards nowadays have too much text and the fact that most of the duel is decided on Turn 1 with combo decks makes the game unappealing to returning/new players because to play a game and understand what's going on you need to watch combo videos on youtube first, otherwise you won't understand a single thing of what's happening. During the Synchro and XYZ Era you could just learn the game by playing, now you have to study the theory if you want to play the game and frankly it's just ridicoulous. Is modern yugioh more complicated? Probably, but the first thing a game should be is : FUN . AND MODERN YUGIOH IS EVERYTHING BUT FUN.

    Something I though Konami should try that Cardfight Vanguard does is doing choice restrictions on their ban lists. Just as an example (not saying this would solves everything) they could choice restrict Havnis and Kelbek where neither can be played in the same deck together. This could also be a way to remove card from the list that are broken by specific interactions.

    Speaking of cubes, I just made a 3500+ card singleton cube that I've been drafting with my friends, and it's been a blast! Honestly, the most fun I've had playing the game, and it's helping me and my friend groups socialize more. There are so many insane game states and interactions that happen in these cube drafts since there is only one copy per card (with a handful of specific exceptions) And the best part is: It's constantly evolving with every set that is released! I get to be excited about pack trash nobody cares about and will probably give to me for free if I asked. Instead of looking at bad modern card design as a blight, I now see it as a potential fine addition to my collection. Silent Wolf Calupo? Bayerock Dragon?? THE GREAT DAMNED NOODLE INVERSION!?? Two formats that weren't included were Reaper Format (2006) and Hat Format (2014), which are the other two formats that are more known by players, and they both have their own unique formats that have special things tied with them.
    I personally enjoy Hat Format for it being a more Control-oriented Format that does require resource management, knowledge of what other decks can do, has many unique decks, and you always have the ability to make a come back due to how difficult it can be for most decks to OTK the opponent in this format.
    There are also a variety of decks that include 12 meta archetypes, 10+ non-meta archetypes, and variations of each of these decks that you can make based on the inclusion of Hands, Artifacts, and/or Fire Fists, which can boost the power level of your deck significantly enough to be able to win tournaments versus the top tier decks. With all of this variety, you really do see like 7+ decks making it in the top cut of tournaments compared to other old formats with way less of a variety of meta decks.

    • @guaritalksaboutcards
      @guaritalksaboutcards ปีที่แล้ว

      HAT is a good format but has problems you'll see once the format gets played at a more competitive level. Infernity is a bane in that format and dice roll is more important in HAT Format than in other old formats due to the absence of Heavy Storm and the presence of Soul Charge.deks.

    • @fornaximus7334
      @fornaximus7334 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@guaritalksaboutcards Infernity is easily hindered in this format due to bricking and the opp opening any 1 handtrap to stop them. Plus, it does take a good pilot to run the deck for an entire tournament, and that's why it stuck around the lower top cut back in 2014.
      The dice roll is a bit more important, but also not really due to the lack of OTKs that can be had in this format. You're looking at maybe 2-3 decks that can do it if they open all gas and the opp has absolutely nothing to stop them from doing so. Soul Charge also negates damage for a turn, so its not like they are killing you that turn, and negates aren't prevalent in this format at all either so....
      As for the backrow situation, we have way more answers that the other popular old formats, because of Double Cyclone, Artifact Ignition, Fire Fist Bear + Tenki, MST at 3, Spiritualism, and many more cards act as generic backrow hate for the format. Which is why you shouldn't need Heavy Storm.
      To top it all off, we have some of the least currently banned and annoyingly op cards of any of the old popular formats. We have Maxx C, Vanity's Emptiness, Lavalval Chain (to a degree as it isn't a staple for every deck), and Soul Charge as the only problematic cards of the format compared to the 5+ problematic cards that lie in Goat, Reaper, and Edison formats respectively.

    • @guaritalksaboutcards
      @guaritalksaboutcards ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fornaximus7334 dice roll is more important when heavy storm doesn't exist. In formats where heavy storm doesn't exist the player who wins the dice roll has a much greater chance to win the duel. There were some studies on pojo about this thing.
      That's why No Heavy Storm + Soul Charge makes HAT one of the old formats where the dice roll matters the most.

    • @fornaximus7334
      @fornaximus7334 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@guaritalksaboutcards You don't need Heavy Storm lol. You have enough backrow and backrow hate, that can also make you go plus in card advantage, that you can literally go second and mimic the opp's turn of setting their hand and passing. You are 100% fine with doing that since they won't be OTK'ing you from 8k LP in this format as well.
      Let's say we did have Heavy Storm in the format, it would be at 1, and you'd have to draw the 1-of. Which is so unreliable, and that's why you don't trust old Pojo Studies, because of how unreliable it can be to draw a 1-of in a 40 card deck. So Heavy Storm would make the smallest difference here, that it wouldn't even matter.
      As for Soul Charge, it is a card to look out for, but the best deck in the format not needing/using it shows that it isn't that big of a problem for the format. It's still there and it matters, but it matters a whole lot less when even the best deck of the format can't use it that well. Plus, if you are worried about this, then you can main deck Maxx C, Effect Veiler, Droll, or D.D. Crow to stop the opp from making a good board or looping with their cards. Let's say you don't have any of these either, and you had to go second versus a deck like Infernity, who has a good pilot that has had a ton of experience and etc, well you still have a chance at making a come back since everything they put up will be interruptions like pops and etc, with Infernity Barrier being the only big negate, and that's at 1. Then popping your set Artifact cards is also a plus for you as Sanctum can pop cards, Ignition can skip their battle phase, and the Artifact monsters can pop cards. So you are still able to win the game when going second even against the most cracked deck with the best pilot for it.

    A "format" ive made up and played a few tumes with friends thats been a lot of fun has been basicslly a full twist on yugioh inspired by the anime where you make up what cards do as you play and if your oppenent doesnt think thats what your card does they can call your bluff on it and you then read the exact effect of your card and if it isnt what you said you skip your next draw phase but if it is what you said they skip their next draw phase. The idea is to make up stuff that makes sense or play absurd cards with weird effects/wordings. This works better with people that dont have an encyclopedic knowledge of random cards and is also very casual but a lot of fun, its also pretty nice to draft as slightly changing the wording of a card while still being convincing can get some crazy results. Although again doesnt stand in at all for actual yugioh and is an entirely different experience.

Basically only cards present in the game Yugioh Forbidden Memories card pool are allowed, and each turn, the turn player can only play/activate 1 card from their hand. Cards on the field can be activated without limit if they were set on previous turns. Cards that activate from the hand without going to the field (like Thunder Dragon) Don’t count. I've been working on a Rush Duel draft using some of their recent nostalgia products like the Battle City box and the Obelisk/Slifer decks. It's hard to nail some of the finer points of the format using non-Rush cards though, like deckout being actually relevant because self-mill is a common cost for card effects. Rush also has a much lower overall power level than Speed Duels since you get unlimited normal summons, which is also hard to nail down. Currently trying to see if I can get some friends together to try it out.
    Also, think it would be cool is there was a high-effort format that split the card pool into "clans" a la Bushiroad TCGs, and individually decide which "clans" get which cards. Like Mist Valley and Harpies could get Icarus Attack, while excluding it from Blackwings. There could also be a generic card pool that's usable by all clans.

People realized they want a few things. 1. Playing with friends (4 Player) 2. Using the entire card pool. 3. Not having to deal with power creep as much.

    Duel links is my favorite. Games can last to at least turn 5-7. The Red-Eyes deck and Blue-Eyes deck are fun to play. Nothing is overpowered. The GOAT format is my second favorite.
    Wow didn’t realize there was a singleton format!! That’s awesome. It’s like commander for magic.

    A fun thing a few of my friends and I have been doing is a 10p card draft type thing. We go to one of our nearest card shops (geek retreat is one of the better ones) with £6 and attempt to build a fairly functional deck out of the 10p cards that they have in massive open top boxes on one of the shelves. We settled on £6 so you can dip into the 50p/£1 card binders as well and maybe pick up a mirror force or lightning vortex to power up your deck and give you an edge. Originally we had half an hour to look through the boxes but it just wasn't enough time so we settled on about an hour to build your deck. It's been really exciting and you can actually end up getting some good synergies; there is a nice back and forth to the duels as well. We also settled on a handicap of an extra pound to get some more cards if you're not fairing very well as a sort of handicap. Definitely worth trying this kind of thing out if your local card shops have boxes of the really cheap cards.

    I would already be happy, if ever a format catches on in which you take the usual advanced format but without negates, floodgates, removal during opponents turn and mass removal. Then both players would just build up their board and ran it into each other and use float effects and stuff. So you would still do crazy combos, but both players would actually do a lot of stuff.

    I think the best thing about yugioh’s history is they made a bunch of videogames. You get some nice snapshots in time. Only downside is if you want to play against people.
    I really want a great videogame, I would love to direct a yugioh game based in 5D’s because of the speed duel rules. The 2011 videogame is so fun, there’s also 2v2, 1v1 speed duel, 2v2 speed duel, and the story mode had the 3v3 tournament and a 1v2. I would love to have a better graphical game with online where you go around as a custom character and help out the 5D’s cast. Also since the game had such slow AI since it was on the DS having a modern fast version would be great. Please Konami put effort in the videogames, hire me, I’ll make the best Edison format game ever created. Hell if I had infinite money I’d put a goat section in as well. Just my 2 cents.

    I would love to see Konami experiment with the Duel Links style of banlist, and I feel like Master Duel events are the perfect testing grounds for it.
    To be fair, there would be tons of headache at the start, but you could eventually end up with a banlist which prevents the best decks in a format from using power cards without taking major hits to consistency, resilience, or power.

    • @MarioLopez-xs3vc
      @MarioLopez-xs3vc ปีที่แล้ว

      I've wanted something like that for a while. Just putting all the powerful draw/search options into a "Limit 3" pool would force decks to use their archetypal searchers/draws or get a good generic one to make up for lacking their own, while simultaneously shutting off deep draw strategies that would string together all of them for FTK shenanigans like a few things are currently able to do. And then there's other fun stuff you can do with it like put a small amount of the most broken cards in the game that are currently banworthy into a "Hard 1" category shared with certain currently oppressive cards to help push certain other decks to that level of power without forcing them to run the same card themselves.

    I'm looking forward to the future videos featuring these custom formats. Us Yugioh players get more burnt out than any other TCG because we don't have as many options. I don’t understand how Heart of The Underdog isn’t being pushed by every OTS and by Konami themselves.
    So many people have decks lying around that they love but can’t play because they get ripped apart by the meta. This would not only get more people into OTS stores (which makes them money) but it would also entice people to make more decks (which also makes them more money.)
    It also goes in line with Konami wanting people to buy product. There’s a new archetype that is being released in a new set that isn’t top tier crazy but looks fun and is decent? Cool now I can actually build it AND play it.
    Also any halfway decent deck that they shit out legacy support for instantly seems more viable to play IRL.
    If my OTS did this, I’d make 3 new decks TOMORROW. It’s a no brainer I don’t get why they don’t push this.

      Yeah I agree having leagues would be great. I love playing ogdoadic but I took it to locals once and I went 0-5 the next week I took phantom knights and I won the event. Keep in mind this was right when ancient guardians came out so pk was very good then. There’s no incentive to play new non meta decks anymore it’s just a bad time all around.

    • @warriorofgod2700
      @warriorofgod2700 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So pushing heart of the underdog actually doesn't make Konami more money, since they don't make anything off the secondary market. They would have to push out more sets that specifically caters to those decks (which is a ton of archetypes/strategies). They'd also have to define what would be classified as a low enough tier to qualify, a completely separate ban list (which we all know how much they care about that), as well as still trying to cater to their primary audience, which is the competitive scene. Like it or not, from the business aspect of it, the casual base isn't what truly makes Konami the fortunes. The big events and OTS stores do. That's why Konami doesn't heavy push the past formats. They either wouldn't sell enough past product support, costing money, or not enough new stuff, costing money/the longevity of the game.

      so my advice for you would be to first figure out whether you want to play competitive or semi casual. There are actually a surprising amount of decks you can get for cheap (obviously they won't be nearly as good as the super power meta houses like tearlament ishizu, but there are tons of decks that still can win). Check TCGplayer for card prices and look up deck profiles/deck showcase videos on youtube to see if there's a deck that personally resonates with you. 9 times out of 10 unless you've picked a super meta deck or a deck that randomly has low printing rate (or the outlier of fan-favorite decks like the waifu decks) you'll be able to pick up decks for quite cheap.

    I have always played old school yu-gi-oh. I stop following meta as soon as Synchro came out. I actually did incorporate some XYZ into my playstyle, but I pretty much only added XYZ cards to my old school decks. For instance, I have a Yugi and Kaiba deck. So I threw in some level four XYZ monsters, and level seven and eight XYZ Monsters, for Yugi and kaiba. I have a old school Pegasus deck, an old school Joey deck, but I powered up the Pegasus Deck with some new toon monsters (no XYZ), and I powered up the Joey Deck with some new XYZ Monsters. None of my extra decks are actually full though maybe 7 or 8 cards each. It's actually been a while since I've played them so I can't remember perfectly. I think the newest deck I have is the newest rise of the Dragon Lords, but I haven't touched that deck in ages so I don't remember anything about it. Then I also have a revamped dinosaur structure deck with a couple of dinosaur XYZ monsters and new dinosaurs support, and I have a revamped Warrior's Triumph Deck with a few Warrior XYZ Monsters and new warrior effect monsters and support backrows. And then lastly I have an old school Dark Magician spellcaster deck, with some Dark Magician support cards and a couple of spellcaster XYZ monsters. But the thing with adding my XYZ monsters, is that I don't have any XYZ support whatsoever. I just threw them into the decks just for the fun of it, but XYZ is not actually required to play those decks, I just threw them in just to add more Combos and strategy to the pre-existing Decks that I built years ago. I specifically chose XYZ because they are easy to summon. I stayed away from anything Synchro because of requiring tuners, I never tried links before, never tried pendulum, and any other New meta after Synchro I never tried. I always liked playing the old school way, the only thing that changed was throwing in a couple of XYZ just to spice up the old school style that I built my decks around. Every one of those decks have and cards as well, such as pot of greed (what does that do?). I have a group of friends and we play with those old decks whenever we duel, we all primarily mained certain decks, but we trade decks sometimes for fun. Even sometimes for fun we'll take out all XYZ extra cards just for the fun of it. We've enjoyed playing this way for years and it's been great. Theres never a clear cut winner for the duels, it's generally someone different, and the duels can last for an hour or more at times. Its honestly great I love it

    Unrelated: I'm a Magic Player who is trying to get into Yu-Gi-Oh (Master Duel). What Deck/Archetypes would you recommend? Someone advised me trying out Giant Ballpark (Which honestly reads like a fun card). I'm excited at the prospect that you could make Normal Monsters kinda sorta viable, or at least playing them without being complete garbage. All the different monster types with their massive amounts of effects dizzy me to be honest. I can't even read them properly because half their texts are referrals to other cards which I know nothing of.
    And could you make a video for people who are trying to get into Yugioh? Maybe some strategy tips, when to use your handtraps, when to save them and how to bait out your opponents' handtraps, or a general overview of the meta, those sorts of things? This game looks really fun, but hell is it hard to get into. And all the Yu Gi Oh content seems to be catered towards people who already know a lot about it.

    I've actually been working on an IRL Cross Duel format. Here, if you guys wanna try it out, you can use it:
    Zone Rules
    There are three Monster zones, and three Spell/Trap zones
    -Left zone is to battle the player on your left
    -Center zone is to battle the player across from you
    -Right zone is to battle the player on your right
    -Spells/Traps can be played against any player - if it targets monsters, you can only target ones you would battle
    -There is no Extra Monster zone
    Summoning Rules
    -You can Normal Summon up to 3 monsters, and you can Tribute Summon once per turn
    -Special Summons are unlimited
    Win Conditions
    -When a player reaches 0 LP or if a player runs out of cards, the Duel is over
    -Whoever has the most points by the end of the Duel is the winner
    Setup
    -Each player starts with 8000 LP
    -Deck must consist of 40-60 cards, and the Extra Deck can contain up to 15 cards
    -Every player states a number between 1 and 6, and a die is rolled. The number it lands on decides the player that can choose to go first or last, and turns go in a clockwise manner. If a number is rolled that is not guessed, roll again.
    -Every turn, at the start of your turn, you must draw until you have 6 cards in your hand. If you cannot, the Duel is over.
    -The fourth turn player can attack.

    I think that the idea behind Trinity is great, but reducing the deck size to help increase consistency is (to me) counter-intuitive. If the problem is that the game is too fast/optimized, going against consistency is the best way to "solve it". As you said, Commander is a MtG format with singleton (only one copy of each card) rules but instead it has an increased minimum deck size (it also is a multiplayer format, so you kinda want games to go longer). If what you're looking is a casual way to play YGO, I would suggest giving normal deck size and only one copy of each card a try, and embrace the variance

    I really hate the term combo in Yugioh. Getting free cards from other free cards is not a combo. It's a no-cost chain that Konami designed. Players aren't thinking up decks that combo 2 or 3 different effects to get an advantage. Everything is written on the card by konami telling you what to get/do. The next card in the chain tells you what to get/do. 5 chains later you get free unbreakable monsters that stop anything and can't be destroyed. No combinations are needed, just follow the text on the card.

    I'll gladly play anything before links and pendulums were a thing, haha. I reject any summoning mechanic newer than xyz. Thats why synchrons are my favorite deck rn. The extra deck is nothing but synchros :)

    Hi Paul, awesome video! I like the idea of playing different formats from snapshots in time.
    Do you have any experience with the early to mid 2014 format? This was right before pendulums and when I last played paper Yugioh at my local game store.
    I really enjoyed that format! If I recall correctly, it was very diverse: Artifacts, Mermails, Madolches, Samurais, Fire Fists, Lightsworns, Bujins, Geargias, Spellbooks, Dark World, Evilswarms, and my favorites, Ghostricks.
    I would love to hear your thoughts about this format! Keep up the awesome content!

    I just play random jank against AI on YGOPro or randomly practice combos if I'm bored with a format. No need to worry about not being able to play the game when you can play with yourself. ಡ ͜ ʖ ಡ
    (Or what I think is underrated... _playing other games_ xD. Trust me. I love Yu-Gi-Oh!... Mostly but just because I do, doesn't mean I can't take a temporary leave and play other games)

      I chose to make my own card game where every card is common because handcrafted foils are a pain in the ass to make and more expensive too lol.

    I feel since VRAINS launched Duel Links is pretty good while maintaining modern cards (though it is rough to get cards the format itself is cool)

    If I was to fix how current Yu-gi-oh is played, I'd offer 2 suggestions:
    1. A mulligan - This would only be awarded to the player going second in a duel. At the beginning of the game (Before the T1 player enters their standby), the T2 player may shuffle their entire hand into their deck in order to draw 5 cards. The downside to this is that it would cause them to lose out on their first draw-phase as a result (So while it gives potentially better card selection for hand-traps, it does cause you to lose out on advantage on the following turn). It also offers more incentive for going second.
    2. Resource Limitation - While Yu-gi-oh doesn't have a resource system like other games, being able to summon from the extra deck is one resource that could be taxed in the early game to reduce the amount of degeneracy. For that, I would suggest limiting the amount of proper extra-deck summons for each players first 3 turn of the duel. The first turns would allow for 0, the second would allow for 1 and the third would allow for 2, after which both players would be allowed to summon to their hearts desire (Or if that ends up being too oppressive, 1,1,2, unlimited).
    The main point of this would allow for both players to setup resources (Especially traps) to counter combo strings while also avoiding hard to break boards simply because you ended up going second (And didn't draw the out). What it also does is offer more variety to decks, as decks that don't special summon from the extra gain aggro advantage than combo decks that need the extra deck to function (And control decks that counter combo decks will end up having a lot more time to build resources in order to stabilize).

    me and my group of friends(10 of them) take things further.
    we made our own format using master rules which simply says "all cards only can have their effects activated once per turn and only once on that turn" which override or "errata-ed" all existing cards no matter even the actual text of the cards says "ignoring all the..."
    it plays more interesting although lot of pause during each duels to discuss how some circumstances that happens but it's expected.
    Players all around the world should just make their own formats and tournament using their own Master Rules and their own Erratas to actually balances the game using broken cards that get balanced.
    it's already time to go our own way since Konami is shown have no interests to do such a thing as Balance since their own so called "Banned Lists" is related to their Business models where they bans their previous OP Cards when their next to release OP Cards is hitting the shelves.
    all that it need is someone mad enough to make 1 Millions USD prize money tournaments using Customs Master Rules and Erratas to give the middle finger to Komoney.

      Amen brother! Me and my friends have made a format ourselves! I’ve been having a blast playing Domain Format! 60 card singleton deck with a (balanced rules) deckmaster in pods of 4! It’s seriously the most fun I’ve had playing, I have content/gameplay on my channel if that sounds cool!
