I drove a 21 window camper conversion all over the USA in 1967 & 68. They were Ssslllloooooowwwww as hell. However, the cool thing was people all over the country knew that and rarely got upset with you. I'd pull out on the road and move over to the shoulder to accelerate (0 to 60 in 2 minutes) other drivers would just wave as they blew past me. Drivers were a hell of a lot more knowledgeable and friendly back then.
When I was a teenager getting my license back when TV's still had glass tubes and brand new cars had carburetors, I could get a used Microbus about as cheaply as anything else you could buy. Problem was they weren't cool anymore....and now they are worth a fortune!
I once owned a 1971 VW camper. I'm now 67 years old and of all the vehicles I ever owned, that camper was my favorite. It was under powered but it got you there. I went all over North America in that thing. I only sold it because I wanted a vehicle with A/C. Volkswagen still makes a very fine, modern camper called the California camper. It's quite popular in Europe but ironically you can't buy one in California or anywhere else in the USA. Too bad because I'd buy one in a heartbeat! I've heard that the next generation of VW bus that will be exported to America will be all electric, sometime in 2022.

I had a 1966 Westfalia Camper that I actually used to go camping in. It had a working gasoline heater too. Some things I loved about my Westy are that I purposely would go out in a blizzard and enjoy driving it when everyone else couldn't get around. There was no hood to pile up with snow and the defrosters worked well bacause this vehicle used a central pipe to carry the heat to the front, rather than the side channels that the beetle used. The bus system worked much better. There was also incredible ground clearance. Another things is that the bus was not just a different body on a beetle floor pan. The parts were significantly more robust. It was rated for 1/2 ton carrying capacity. It had twin leading shoe front brakes. That means that there were two brake cylinders in each front wheel which meant that each brake shoe in the drum applied the same braking force. It also meant that when backing up the front brakes did almost nothing. Another thing is that the buses got the new engines a year before the beetles did. Besides the vent windows, there was a ventilation system located above the front seats. The intake for this system was in the outside sun visor at the top of the windshield. The air would rush up the windshield into that intake and create a blast of air that could be directed to the sides and rear of the interior. It was a great system really and I never felt like I needed air conditioning. Don't forget, all the hot parts were in the rear of the vehicle. I never heard the term "portal axles" before, but rather transfer cases. You would appreciate how massive the bearings and gears are in these things. The military heritage of these components is evident. These are truly amazing vehicles. I am so glad I had an opportunity to own one and enjoy it for a few years. And yes, I am kicking myself for selling it back in the 1980's.
I appreciate your (and his) mentions about the aerodynamic design. I've had my '67 Westy for over twenty years. I saw the passenger side windshield wiper mechanism blow off in a sideways-wind snowstorm, kept going, and found it 3 years later. I still haven't bothered to screw it back on. As for the driver side rubber wiper blade, it went raw maybe 5 years ago. A concerned friend informed me I could get a ticket and a fine for this scenario. Whatever. The split window design is so efficient that I honestly never need to use the windshield wipers. It's very fascinating to see whilst on the freeway at 55-60 mph how the rain goes off to the sides and there is zero loss in visibility; bonus- washes the glass. BTW, I live in the rainy Pacific Northwest!
Greetings from South Africa. Our Vw factory continued to produce a slightly modified version of the 3rd generation Microbus and it's Caravelle sibling in the Microbus shape in the 90's until 2002 and had 2.3l, 2.5l and 2.6l Audi 5 cylinder petrol (gas) engines powering them. That was my introduction to those buses and we currently have a 2000 model Caravelle T4 2.5tdi which we bought in 2004.
Outstanding! Great research, full of real facts and not repetitive opinion disguised as facts. I had a 1971 bus that I loved. It met its end when I rolled it on the freeway during a rainstorm. Luckily my passengers and I didn’t meet our ends.
I picked up my 1st split window bus in 1997 for $200. Got it running in the seller's driveway and brought it home. 2 years later I found my first 21 window walkthrough and bought it for $800....I bleed the brakes and threw in a new battery to drive it home.......I've had several others over the years, but those two I probably miss the most.
And they're hella fun to drive. The driver compartment turning with the wheels is a great sensation and the suspension has really long travel. The whole experience is not unlike a ride in an amusement park.
They look awesome, they are reliable for classic cars but they are horrible cars to drive in every way, I would recommend a T3/Vanagon if you are looking for a VW bus you want to drive a lot. And I say this as a big VW fan.
You either love it or you hate it. I happen to love it. It’s also my dream to own a mircrobus.. We inherited an early 70 VW bus in early 90’s. Bought a used 80’s Vanagon in the late 90’s. Bought a brand new Eurovan in 2001; my husband tells me they stopped importing after that probably because of the tariffs mentioned earlier along with popularity of SUV’’s, vans were just not selling. I don’t care, we still have our Eurovan and will never get rid of it. In fact, VW dealerships have been sending us postcards to buy our Eurovan, as well as private buyers and mechanics. We have ppl leaving post it notes and knocking on our door constantly. This past month my husband bought a late model used Vanagon, I know, again. This is the first time we own more than 1 VW van at a time along with a 3rd and 4th vehicle. Hate us I don’t care. We love our VWs. 😍

I always wanted a bus, especially a split window but nowadays they are unreachable with their price...I ended up buying a 79' bay window camper & couldn't be happier!! Within the last 4 years since I got it, the value on them is now going up considerable! All around any old VW is super cool!
They may have called it a station wagon but it was really the worlds first minivan! We had some family friends when I was growing up who went through two of them in a row. I don't remember how long they drove them altogether but it was a very long time!
I'd argue it's one of the worst creations ever. It's incredibly ugly, has no power and became a symbol of one of the worst movements in American history. The damn hippies.

I've owned three type 2 VWs, 2 67s, and one 66. Two kombis and a double door cargo that had been converted to a camper in 1970. I loved those buses. Sadly I had to part with them. Wish I had any of them back. By the way, very nice 19 window 67 in the video, except for the salt water ride.
I still remember playing hookie and going to the beach with some friends in 1978. One of my friends took his dad's VW Bus, and just before we were getting ready to leave, his dad showed up. My buddy sat there getting lectured while his dad was pulled up next to him in his car. So, for nearly 30 minutes, the rest of us laid out of sight on the floor. The car sat lower, and his dad never knew we were there. His dad had to go to work, and my buddy was told to take the VW home. As soon as his dad drove away, we went to the beach. Good times.
The chicken tax was only for cargo trucks which is the reason vw pickups are very rare in the usa.... That tax also included brandy and corn starch but that was lifted... The tax on cargo versions of motor vehicles remains mostly due the American automakers protecting their market and lobbying to prevent repeal. It is fun to do a little research to see interesting ways an automaker avoids that tax... Ford imports every van as a passenger van and then converts it to a cargo van at the port tossing out the seats and glass.... Toyota used to ship their trucks in a crate as a kit to be assembled in america.... But u.s. automakers arre to blame for this tax still being around.
I'd say the Baja, but that was made in the US in Subaru of Indiana plant, same place the Legacy and Outback were made (and are still made) and the Impreza was just recently put into production there around 2015.
My Dad drove a 1970 VW bus for years. We gad to replace the engine twice. It had over 200,00 miles on it. We rolled over the odometer twice. I used it to move to college in 1984. My Dad passed in 1984 and after I moved, it time to trade I t in. I still remember the day my family picked it up. We all piled into a VW Beetle, there was 8. Two adults, 6 kids. Dad, Mom and the baby in my Mom's lap. Four kids in the back and my younger brother in the luggage compartment. The dealer wished he had a camera to film all of us getting out of the Beetle and into the van. To paraphrase an old VW advertisement "Mass Transit".
I had one in Germany in 1974 and loved driving it because you set right over the front wheels. When I drove it in the snow my feet would freeze to the floor boards because i removed the rusted out front pan. Rust was a big problem and mine was so rusted out that the sliding door would fall off (if it wasn't locked) when I drove over cobblestone streets. The inspectors at the yearly inspection station refused to take anymore of my bribes so it was sent to the scrap yard.. I got 120DM for it.

When I was coming up we had a '69 kombi, '62 pickup and those were all "farm trucks". In '77 my dad bought a new kombi that was "mine"(to use). Needless to say I was very happy to be the stoners driver. This was in South suburban Chicago, I think some of those people's toes are just now warming up.
Was with some friends years back in their combi when the clutch went. Got underneath and saw that where the cables nipple fitted into the lever, that the lever had broken away on the tension side. So, reversed the lever and adjusted the slack out of the cable and we were on the road again after less than 15 minutes. I love the feel of these on the road too. I'll never understand why it's become mandatory for light weight vehicles to be fitted with power steering these days. Just unnecessary complication for the feeble.
Small cars these days are front engine and front wheel drive, so they have much more weight on the front wheels, also modern tires are wider. I know what you mean though. I bought a new 84 Renault Encore (don't ask why, it seemed like a good idea at the time) and I was annoyed that to get one with the other equipment I wanted I had to get power steering. I miss the old days of simple cars.
Number 6. The self destruct mechanism VW put in there, in the form of the fuel lines near the engine. About 30 years ago I saw a Camper version on fire from a fractured one.....
Additional comments: I remember seeing a vintage picture of a split window bus with a rolling side cargo door. I believe it was an option but I can find no reference to it now. I have seen metal shields that covered the entire underside of these vans. I think they were optional. Anyone? The split window bus had ball joints for just one year, 1967. Before that it was King Pins and Link Pins. It also was 12 Volts. The gasoline heater I had in my bus was a South Wind model made by Stewart Warner. There were also Ebersbacher units but I am not sure of the years. I think those were used in the Type IV and Type 181 (Thing). The split window buses used a transfer case at each wheel that had a 2:3 ratio. This meant that the drive axles had to turn in reverse. To accomplish this it was only necessary to flip the ring gear in the transmission to the other side if you wanted to use a Beetle transmission. This arrangement gave greater ground clearance as the axle shafts were above the center of the wheel. It also meant that instead of squatting on acceleration, the rear end would rise! The VDO clock used in the split window bus was a mechanical clock, but used a solenoid that engaged every 10 minutes or so to wind it.
The metal skin under was a feature on Deluxe busses with sunroofs. Also found on the limited standard busses with sunroofs. I always had the impression that the metal skin had a truss or strengthening effect to counter possible additional stretch or twisting that might occur as a result of the big hole in the roof. I grew up in Deluxe Micro busses th-cam.com/video/anajRR57nPI/w-d-xo.html and also had a 58 PGSG factory sunroof and safari window standard. It had the metal skin/pan under. th-cam.com/video/JRWZ8mbO8tI/w-d-xo.html check out my ongoing episodes. That 58 PGSG also had a Bosch gas heater.
It did not have a Beetle chassis. Beetle engine, yes, Beetle chassis, no. Earely ones had Beetle transmissions, with the same gear ratios, but added the reduction gears at the 2 rear wheels to increase the gear ration (turns in / turns out) across all 4 gear positions. The van being heavier, and having a higher gear ratio, was not able to go as fast. The Beetle could "cruise all day at 78 mph"; the van could cruise all day at: only 65 mph.

I had a 72 Microbus in the late 70s, with the 1700 pancake engine and dual carbs. it was so slow I can't even imagine how slow an older one was. It was already rusting out everywhere when I sold it in 1980. It handled horribly. It blew all over the road in a cross wind or when passed by a truck. The seats sucked. The heater was, for all practical purposes, non-existent. Gas mileage was bad because you had to keep it floored most of the time. If I'd ever hit anything in it I'm sure I would have died instantly. On the plus side, it was great in snow and I enjoyed driving it most of the time. BTW, I noticed when I relocated the spare tire to the front there was a very definite improvement in stability, especially in windy conditions. I don't know if that was just due to better weight distribution (seems unlikely) or something to do with aerodynamics?.
If I could afford to collect classics, in my Jay Leno type garage would be a '67 Beetle, light blue like the two that had been in my family at different times, and any 60's vintage Microbus. They would be near my '66 Galaxie and '68 Mustang.
He forgot to mention that any vw bus owner should not only be prepared for a breakdown with full toolbox & spare parts with you at all times, but also blankets, pillows, food enough to live comfortably and a couple of folding chairs incase you have company while camped out doing repairs as like the saying goes Home is where the bus is.....broken down.
They are pretty reliable, they can easily compete with American cars when it comes to reliability. My reference for this claim is the fact that I'm a big fan of VW and Ford, I own both a classic bus and a classic Mustang GT coupe.
Could have waited an extra 4/5 years for the 1970cc suitcase/pancake engine derived from the 411/412 Varient which had an electric auxiliary heater blower fan though at a higher price. The rear engine compartment valence bar was then welded in making raising of the vehicle a necessity for engine removal. Been following Duckman Cycles and VW garage on You Tube, based in Pensacola, Florida. Restoring a 66/67 example with a lot of the dreaded tin worm(rust) named Gregory.
I get the feeling this guy dislikes any notion that the microbus and the karman ghia were original vw designs. He did the same for the kg video as if vw stole designs for their cars. I havent seen a beetle video from him, but he probably did the same with that one too. Shouldnt have driven it in or around salt water either. I think hes on my fecal matter list.

That drag coefficient was only good up to 35-40MPH. Still, a very fun vehicle to drive, just don't push it hard on the freeway. Take the scenic route instead.

I've owned three type 2 VWs, 2 67s, and one 66. Two kombis and a double door cargo that had been converted to a camper in 1970. I loved those buses. Sadly I had to part with them. Wish I had any of them back. By the way, very nice 19 window 67 in the video, except for the salt water ride.

I still remember playing hookie and going to the beach with some friends in 1978. One of my friends took his dad's VW Bus, and just before we were getting ready to leave, his dad showed up. My buddy sat there getting lectured while his dad was pulled up next to him in his car. So, for nearly 30 minutes, the rest of us laid out of sight on the floor. The car sat lower, and his dad never knew we were there. His dad had to go to work, and my buddy was told to take the VW home. As soon as his dad drove away, we went to the beach. Good times.

The chicken tax was only for cargo trucks which is the reason vw pickups are very rare in the usa....
That tax also included brandy and corn starch but that was lifted...
The tax on cargo versions of motor vehicles remains mostly due the American automakers protecting their market and lobbying to prevent repeal.
It is fun to do a little research to see interesting ways an automaker avoids that tax...
Ford imports every van as a passenger van and then converts it to a cargo van at the port tossing out the seats and glass....
Toyota used to ship their trucks in a crate as a kit to be assembled in america....
But u.s. automakers arre to blame for this tax still being around.
I'd say the Baja, but that was made in the US in Subaru of Indiana plant, same place the Legacy and Outback were made (and are still made) and the Impreza was just recently put into production there around 2015.
And this is why VW marketed this as a station wagon.

My Dad drove a 1970 VW bus for years. We gad to replace the engine twice. It had over 200,00 miles on it. We rolled over the odometer twice. I used it to move to college in 1984. My Dad passed in 1984 and after I moved, it time to trade I t in.
I still remember the day my family picked it up. We all piled into a VW Beetle, there was 8. Two adults, 6 kids. Dad, Mom and the baby in my Mom's lap. Four kids in the back and my younger brother in the luggage compartment. The dealer wished he had a camera to film all of us getting out of the Beetle and into the van. To paraphrase an old VW advertisement "Mass Transit".

I had one in Germany in 1974 and loved driving it because you set right over the front wheels.
When I drove it in the snow my feet would freeze to the floor boards because i removed the rusted out front pan. Rust was a big problem and mine was so rusted out that the sliding door would fall off (if it wasn't locked) when I drove over cobblestone streets. The inspectors at the yearly inspection station refused to take anymore of my bribes so it was sent to the scrap yard.. I got 120DM for it.

When I was coming up we had a '69 kombi, '62 pickup and those were all "farm trucks". In '77 my dad bought a new kombi that was "mine"(to use). Needless to say I was very happy to be the stoners driver. This was in South suburban Chicago, I think some of those people's toes are just now warming up.

Was with some friends years back in their combi when the clutch went. Got underneath and saw that where the cables nipple fitted into the lever, that the lever had broken away on the tension side. So, reversed the lever and adjusted the slack out of the cable and we were on the road again after less than 15 minutes. I love the feel of these on the road too. I'll never understand why it's become mandatory for light weight vehicles to be fitted with power steering these days. Just unnecessary complication for the feeble.
Small cars these days are front engine and front wheel drive, so they have much more weight on the front wheels, also modern tires are wider. I know what you mean though. I bought a new 84 Renault Encore (don't ask why, it seemed like a good idea at the time) and I was annoyed that to get one with the other equipment I wanted I had to get power steering. I miss the old days of simple cars.

Additional comments: I remember seeing a vintage picture of a split window bus with a rolling side cargo door. I believe it was an option but I can find no reference to it now. I have seen metal shields that covered the entire underside of these vans. I think they were optional. Anyone?
The split window bus had ball joints for just one year, 1967. Before that it was King Pins and Link Pins. It also was 12 Volts. The gasoline heater I had in my bus was a South Wind model made by Stewart Warner. There were also Ebersbacher units but I am not sure of the years. I think those were used in the Type IV and Type 181 (Thing). The split window buses used a transfer case at each wheel that had a 2:3 ratio. This meant that the drive axles had to turn in reverse. To accomplish this it was only necessary to flip the ring gear in the transmission to the other side if you wanted to use a Beetle transmission. This arrangement gave greater ground clearance as the axle shafts were above the center of the wheel. It also meant that instead of squatting on acceleration, the rear end would rise! The VDO clock used in the split window bus was a mechanical clock, but used a solenoid that engaged every 10 minutes or so to wind it.
The metal skin under was a feature on Deluxe busses with sunroofs. Also found on the limited standard busses with sunroofs. I always had the impression that the metal skin had a truss or strengthening effect to counter possible additional stretch or twisting that might occur as a result of the big hole in the roof. I grew up in Deluxe Micro busses th-cam.com/video/anajRR57nPI/w-d-xo.html and also had a 58 PGSG factory sunroof and safari window standard. It had the metal skin/pan under. th-cam.com/video/JRWZ8mbO8tI/w-d-xo.html check out my ongoing episodes. That 58 PGSG also had a Bosch gas heater.
It did not have a Beetle chassis. Beetle engine, yes, Beetle chassis, no. Earely ones had Beetle transmissions, with the same gear ratios, but added the reduction gears at the 2 rear wheels to increase the gear ration (turns in / turns out) across all 4 gear positions. The van being heavier, and having a higher gear ratio, was not able to go as fast. The Beetle could "cruise all day at 78 mph"; the van could cruise all day at: only 65 mph.

I had a 72 Microbus in the late 70s, with the 1700 pancake engine and dual carbs. it was so slow I can't even imagine how slow an older one was. It was already rusting out everywhere when I sold it in 1980. It handled horribly. It blew all over the road in a cross wind or when passed by a truck. The seats sucked. The heater was, for all practical purposes, non-existent. Gas mileage was bad because you had to keep it floored most of the time. If I'd ever hit anything in it I'm sure I would have died instantly. On the plus side, it was great in snow and I enjoyed driving it most of the time. BTW, I noticed when I relocated the spare tire to the front there was a very definite improvement in stability, especially in windy conditions. I don't know if that was just due to better weight distribution (seems unlikely) or something to do with aerodynamics?.

If I could afford to collect classics, in my Jay Leno type garage would be a '67 Beetle, light blue like the two that had been in my family at different times, and any 60's vintage Microbus. They would be near my '66 Galaxie and '68 Mustang.
He forgot to mention that any vw bus owner should not only be prepared for a breakdown with full toolbox & spare parts with you at all times, but also blankets, pillows, food enough to live comfortably and a couple of folding chairs incase you have company while camped out doing repairs as like the saying goes Home is where the bus is.....broken down.
They are pretty reliable, they can easily compete with American cars when it comes to reliability. My reference for this claim is the fact that I'm a big fan of VW and Ford, I own both a classic bus and a classic Mustang GT coupe.

I had a '71. Huge fun, but it really did need a bigger engine. Valves had to be adjusted frequently, and changed every 50,000 miles.
Could have waited an extra 4/5 years for the 1970cc suitcase/pancake engine derived from the 411/412 Varient which had an electric auxiliary heater blower fan though at a higher price. The rear engine compartment valence bar was then welded in making raising of the vehicle a necessity for engine removal.
Been following Duckman Cycles and VW garage on You Tube, based in Pensacola, Florida. Restoring a 66/67 example with a lot of the dreaded tin worm(rust) named Gregory.

I get the feeling this guy dislikes any notion that the microbus and the karman ghia were original vw designs. He did the same for the kg video as if vw stole designs for their cars. I havent seen a beetle video from him, but he probably did the same with that one too.

That drag coefficient was only good up to 35-40MPH. Still, a very fun vehicle to drive, just don't push it hard on the freeway. Take the scenic route instead.
