As a Chinese girl, I think one of the reasons why movies like Fast and Furious (or Transformers) did so well in foreign markets is that you don't need to understand every line in the movie to enjoy it. A lot of Chinese people are not so good at English and China doesn't release any dubbed version of Hollywood films. If the plot get too complicated, they have to rely heavily on the subtitle and that takes out all the fun. This is also a reason why musicals never do very well in China. When you're singing, it's even harder to understand.
I saw F8 - great movie btw. It's exactly what you hope it is. Outlandish stunts and special effects. I also saw Beauty and the Beast for the 3rd time! I cannot get enough of that movie.

And whether you like something or not, you always back up your points with facts. This video was great because I learned so much about F8 and because I haven't seen it yet, I'm more excited to see it. Also kudos to Vin D, I have a lot more respect for him!
I'm an expat living in Taiwan, and I've got to say this movie is popular just because people like it, it’s fun. From talking to my friends I found it's much less about star power and more about the brand of Fast and Furious. Also there is something to be said about language barriers. There have been countless times I have seen many jokes not be understood by the people here. You don't realize how strongly jokes, language, and culture work together until you go somewhere different. Many jokes are based on language and based on culture so they are often missed by foreign audiences. But in Fast and the Furious the audience here got most of the jokes.

Great video, Grace. I agree, it's pretty sad that non-fans of the Fast franchise can't give credit where it's due. F8 achieved what so many thought they wouldn't, and that's having a successful debut without the "tragedy" factor Fast 7 had. At the end of the day, those with long sticks up their asses will turn their noses up at the movie, but those who simply want to be entertained and have a fun time at the movies will continue to turn out and won't be disappointed.

I've been taking everyone I know to see Boss Baby because I'm an animation student and I really want people to give quality animation a chance. I've already seen it 3 times and I'm seeing it again this weekend with another friend. It's a solid piece of animation and design work with amazing texture detail, great lighting, and phenomenal use of timing and camera work for comedic effect. If anyone is interested in animation or has ever had a little brother, they should give it a shot.

The only reason this movie beat out star wars for biggest would opening is because it opened in 55 areas across the globe in the same weekend. where star wars only opened in 21 the first weekend. if you added every opening weekend where star wars opened in a new area it made close to 800 million so that's why most people go with north American opening weekend. which this movie did 30 million less than forcasting and 50 million less than the 7th film. which is a huge drop. personally I much preferred this film over the last 5 in the franchise. but to be fair I liked all the new characters more than the main cast. Jason,Charlize, kurt, and the rock having a bigger role.
im planning on seeing boss baby (again, it was just so good!!) and the promise! im super excited for the promise because i am armenian and my great grandfather survived the genocide. im so happy to finally see my heritage represented!!!

I might be naive but I love Marvel & Star Wars films but hope DC does just as well and I haven't seen Fast 8 yet but will go see it this weekend most likely and while I thought Fast 5 was the best film in this franchise but liked Fast 6 and Fast 7 more than 6 but love The Rock, Statham is great and Vin Diesel is good in this franchise imo.

I think this run of late winter/spring releases have each saited a particular need in the audience and gracefully passed the baton to the next film. Logan satisfied a particular fix; gruesome and emotionally grueling. Then people needed something lighter and just flat out fun...enter Kong Skull Island. Which continued a distinct lack in romance and make believe. Beauty and the Beast anyone? (I think the whole world said yes.) And so on and so on until you get to Fast and the Furious 8 and the long awaited surge of adrenaline. Additionally, I think that with almost all of the films getting great reviews/word of mouth people felt more confidence in the next big release (even though they are unrelated.) Moral: Make good movies and position them smartly and everyone can win.
The 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' trailer had 43 Million views in 24 hours. It ranks 15th behind 'Baahubali 2: The Conclusion' ( yeah, I have no idea what that movie is either). With a Star Wars movie every year, perhaps anticipation is starting to wane, or maybe the trailer lacked the buzz the Thor Ragnarok trailer did. I mean, Hela catches Mjolnir... then crushes it... now that creates buzz.
Dear Grace, When a film runs a long time does the split of the ticket sales between the theaters and studios change? I read that Titanic, a film that ran a very long time, was a real boon for theaters because after the initial few weeks, the theater chains got a bigger and bigger slice of the ticket profits. I've never seen any of the FATF movies, the trailers just never grabbed me. But you can't argue with the numbers. Props to Vin Diesel and everyone else involved. Doesn't look like there's much coming down the pike that I'm interested in. I probably won't be heading to the cineplex any time soon.

I think the best part of the movie was Luke Evans coming back, teaming up with his brother in the movie, Jason Statham. I hope they come back in the 2 other movies
I might be naive but I love Marvel & Star Wars films but hope DC does just as well and I haven't seen Fast 8 yet but will go see it this weekend most likely and while I thought Fast 5 was the best film in this franchise but liked Fast 6 and Fast 7 more than 6 but love The Rock, Statham is great and Vin Diesel is good in this franchise imo.
I really don't like Dwayne Johnson, so the idea of giving this franchise to him is really silly. I appreciate the work that is done on these movies and like how out of the box it is. People need to stop hating on these movies cause it's not like you went to go see it, and it obviously doesn't need your money.

What the hell is the media smoking. This movie was so much better than the recent Marvel movies (barring Logan). Controversial opinion I guess but it's true.
F8 was great because it never claims to be this serious writing movie but a amazing popcorn movie....which I enjoyed

I saw it last night and totally loved it. Vin Diesel and Charlize Theron were my favorite characters!! I cannot wait for 9 and 10, I think everyone should be happy about this!!! Star Wars isn't that great 😉

I think this run of late winter/spring releases have each saited a particular need in the audience and gracefully passed the baton to the next film. Logan satisfied a particular fix; gruesome and emotionally grueling. Then people needed something lighter and just flat out fun...enter Kong Skull Island. Which continued a distinct lack in romance and make believe. Beauty and the Beast anyone? (I think the whole world said yes.) And so on and so on until you get to Fast and the Furious 8 and the long awaited surge of adrenaline. Additionally, I think that with almost all of the films getting great reviews/word of mouth people felt more confidence in the next big release (even though they are unrelated.)
Moral: Make good movies and position them smartly and everyone can win.
The 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' trailer had 43 Million views in 24 hours. It ranks 15th behind 'Baahubali 2: The Conclusion' ( yeah, I have no idea what that movie is either). With a Star Wars movie every year, perhaps anticipation is starting to wane, or maybe the trailer lacked the buzz the Thor Ragnarok trailer did. I mean, Hela catches Mjolnir... then crushes it... now that creates buzz.

Dear Grace, When a film runs a long time does the split of the ticket sales between the theaters and studios change? I read that Titanic, a film that ran a very long time, was a real boon for theaters because after the initial few weeks, the theater chains got a bigger and bigger slice of the ticket profits.

I've never seen any of the FATF movies, the trailers just never grabbed me. But you can't argue with the numbers. Props to Vin Diesel and everyone else involved.
