Fencing has many styles the importance of distance is universal. The importance of timing and speed will never change . The challenge and the diversity of movement and tactics is the universal challenge.

Fencing is setting up your opponent to make a move he thought was his, but you enable the fencer to open up and make that touch before they realize the touch was made... when the opponent says, how’d he do that, that was the one move that you mastered over and over and you know it will always work... it’s a guarantee, it’s that one touch you know you need...

Fencing is for kids with no athletic ability. Every kid I have met that was a “fencer” had no innate talent. Anyone with athletic ability wouldn’t waste so much money on a hobby. I would never consider this a true sport

olympic style fencing has gotten so far away from the core of what made fencing great, there is no style and elegance left, but olympic is about how fast you can score a point, olympic style fencing is fun to watch but still not true fencing (im a historical fencer and have been doing it for 11 years and my area of expertize is in nicoletto giganti and salvator fabris)

It's true fencing. It is not true swordsmanship. Sport fencing teaches sportsmanship. Historical fencing/classical fencing/HEMA teaches swordsmanship. While Historical is fascinating it offers little in applicability in the way of the art of defense in our modern age. Its competitions have little on the line in the form of negating serious physical injury or death as a real swordsman would be aclimated to. Practicing to defend against an obsolete system and weapon that almost no one would attack someone with would almost take the martial out of the art and leave it as a hobby that refuses to be a sport. No doubt it is an awesome hobby and intelligent study. Sport fencing offers some more applicable perks such as scholarships, extreme physical conditioning and of course its place in the Olympics. It has more emphasis on intelligent point management where one might prefer a double hit in epee to achieve an overall win. Or to use priority to gain a point while being struck. In this way it makes a terrible swordsman because in the art of defense the goal is to not bleed at all. It makes solid sportsmen and exceptional athletes. It could use announcers fluent in the sport to highlight who has priority to the spectators tbh. Both are true forms of fencing in their given contexts. Both could learn a thing or 2 from each other and both are awesome when surrounded by good company.
      Cheers!
