  • Digging a fish pond in the Northern of Canada. Help the channel - HIT PLAY AND WALK AWAY! Or get a snack and learn from what worked and what didn't when you built this natural trout pond on an extreme budget. 155-Fish Trout Pond!
We use a massive excavator to dig out our clay based trout pond so that we can add hundreds of rainbow trout! If you want to learn out to dig a huge trout or fish pond dug or other kinds of excavating this is for you. My Gear (Shop and Support): www.thewoodedb...
The fastest way to dig a big pond is to use the help of a qualified excavator. This excavator normally digs out house foundations and the operator has years of experience digging giant holes in the ground and removing mountains of material.
In the previous episodes we measured water quality of our fish pond for oxygen and water temperature. This pond was also monitored year round to see if it holds enough water and has the depth the fish need to stay cold. Rainbow trout need good to excellent water quality and plenty of oxygen. Water flow is an asset to help fish spawn. We discovered that the water in our pond is filled continuously with the help of ground water and is very cold, even in the summer. Trout will die if water gets above 25 degrees Celsius. Shade also helps keep water cool and our pond is sheltered for a good part of the day with trees.
You will need to find out what kind of soil you are working with. Is it clay, clay-loam and sandy loam are best for holding water. You will want to avoid limestone, shale, sand and gravel-they leak. Except in our case since the gravel is actually part of the ground water, which is ideal. You can ask around to find out if your pond will leak or will hold water year round. You don't want your pond to dry up in the middle of the summer.
Our plan to excavate the remainder of the pond, pushing the size out to about a half acre in size and a water depth of around 8 feet. 15 feet is more ideal, but our base is shale and therefore can not be dug any deeper.
A trout pond is very difficult to establish, but it is very possible to do correctly if you know what the fish need.
Aeration of the pond is something we will be exploring as we see how the season develops. We are hopeful that water remains cool so dissolved oxygen in the water remains high.
After we dig the pond, we will let is sit for a few weeks before putting our fish in the pond. Ideally you will let the pond sit for a full year, but we are not patient enough for this.

Your pond level is too close from the water surface to the dirt. If you want a better pond, it should be 4 feet tall from the dirt to the water surface.
And some algae bloom is a sign that you need seaweed from the bottom of the water surface where it
gives off natural oxygen and plenty of good microbes to thrive over the bad ones.
As for the purity of the pond, there is a guy who has the natural formula to purify rivers and oceans.
He's popular from NasDaily. You can do research on him. He's Japanese.

Ngl, also a little bit of poop can purify the pond as it contains nitrogen and phosphorus.

Guys I used Aluminium Sulphate in swimming pools in Australia for 10 years or so and had great success mixing the flocculent in warm water and pouring it into the pool.
This method allows the mix to spread over the surface and as it cools it will then do its magic taking all the suspended matter to the bottom.
With pools we would then vacuum all that sediment out to waste.
    Hope this info helps.
    Cheers
    Greg

Suckers might silt up the bottom and kick up the clay. I thought about that and minnows but I don't want any carp accidentally get in there and ruining it. So need to be careful. Most other fish don't care, but trout like clear water.
