I went with the cx 30. The awd is forward biased until you use the trail mode, which actually makes it fantastic off road. It does have issues with deep gullies because of the approach angle, but the grip is crazy good for a compact crossover
One of the biggest selling points for me on Mazda is their modernized "SKYACTIV" design-take of a traditional 6-speed automatic transmission that they use across pretty much all their various vehicles, which a very popular & knowledgeable TH-cam Toyota mechanic has called "Brilliant" & what every automaker including Toyota should be using instead of belt/chain design CVT's, DCT's, etc. I compared all the small Crossovers in 2022 & went with a CX-30 Carbon Edition as my choice. No regrets after 1 year thus far & zero issues/problems. I did have to black-out additional portions of the vehicle, however, to get the thicker black cladding & bumper to look like a more natural & integrated part of the vehicle design.
I owned a Crosstrek for about 8 years and loved it, but just bought a CX-30. I was never completely satisfied with the CVT transmission and lack of power in the Subaru. The Mazda is more powerful, has more luxury appointments, and gets amazing highway fuel economy (45 mpg hwy). The CX-30 is definitely smaller, with less cargo space and back seat room. I am 6’4” and fit comfortably in the driver’s seat. The reduced visibility is definitely something to get used to.
Each vehicle has its trade offs, but I’m glad you’re enjoying your new Mazda! 45mpg is astonishing. I’ve also gotten up to 47mpg highway scenic day trip in my 23 Miata lol. They’re impressive cars. 🙂
On my 2nd CX-30, 2020 Preferred , put 85k highway miles with only a set of breaks and new tires, regular oil changes, worry free and one of the best sound systems on the market across all classes. Picking up a '23 Carbon Edition tomorrow in fact. Word of suggestion, buy a new year certified preowned with less than 5k miles, your warranty alone will be worth it(7 yr/100k) along with the existing 3yr/36k standard warranty. You save $2-3k vs buying new. I am just sold on these cx-30's after my first experience and recommend them to anyone as either a solo driver or daily driver. The 2023 Carbon edition does not come equipped with the Bose sound system due to chip availability issues with Mazda, so I'll definitely be getting a subwoofer to sit in the spare tire housing. Go with the cx-30, best advice I can give. And unless you are into "speed" there is no need for the $3-4 k extra turbo version imo, 191 hp is best in class and more than enough Ponies.
I agree with you 100%. I do love my music, so I added a JBL spare mounted subwoofer, and the sound is phenomenal! The Carbon Edition is the sweet spot!
Clarification - All 2023 Mazda CX-30 options have 8.0" of minimum ground clearance. The early models (2020?) the base model had 6.9ish", while the upper end models had an 8.0" ground clearance. Definitely like the comparison of two competing cars - definitely do more. They are handy - but viewers need to do their homework, in case the numbers aren't 100% accurate (see note above). We have this 2023 Carbon Edition CX-30, and I have zero issues taking this off pavement down dirt and gravel roads. The AWD is very solid in fairly snowy slippery conditions. This is a solid "off-road demo" of the CX-30. th-cam.com/video/_nOLkWjjyts/w-d-xo.html If I was doing excessive/extreme off-road driving, I wouldn't take the CrossTrek, nor the CX-30.
Our Outback and Forester are used for on road driving, except for our private road in the winter when we have to put our Subie’s in Xmode to get up our road and into our garage. Also my wife’s parents’ driveway is 3 miles long and their house is at the end. Their house is the only one on their driveway. They have a 10K acre ranch in MT and at times their driveway can be rough to say the least. Four years ago they had to call the County to bring an earth mover to plow their driveway so they could get into town. They had 3 ft of snow (which they had plowed), but after a storm it dropped another 6 feet so they were snow bound. For harder off roading here where we live in north central WA state in the Mtns, we use our 4X4 pickup.
I would contend the two vehicles are for completely different buyers. One for people to daily in and occasionally find themselves on a dirt road. The other is for people who drive dirt and gravel roads and occasionally find themselves on a highway. I would freak out if one got dirty. I would not feel right if the other was clean.
I really appreciated your covering visibility l. I assumed Crosstrek and all Subarus would be better. You are the first reviewer I've seen to make an a tual point by point comparison. Thanks very helpful te iew.
I considered both vehicles; however, I went ahead and purchased a Mazda CX-30 in February. I considered just about everything. The Mazda is just far more premium than the Subaru. It rides better/quieter and has more power (and NO CVT thankfully). I also prefer the Mazda engine and safety features that are nearly identical across all trims. I do think that Subaru has a more robust AWD; however, Mazda's AWD is actually very good and comes standard. I've already taken my Mazda up a few mountains; and, I'm headed to the sierra again for a camping/hiking trip this week. Apart from the AWD, the only other think that I prefer on the Subaru is the look of the wheels (more sporty) and the cladding. Mazda's cladding is more aerodynamic and Subaru's sticks out more from the body; however, Subaru's looks more utilitarian -- like it was there for that purpose. Mazda's vehicle feels just too premium/luxury for its cladding. However, it's grown on me. Moreover, I wouldn't mind Mazda's to somehow texturize their cladding in the future for the CX-30.
Well said! I especially agree with your thoughts about Mazda cladding doesn’t match it’s otherwise premium feel. Thanks for watching and sharing your experiences! 🙂
I like Mazda CX 30 for its more premium feel, but Crosstrek has much better visibility for the driver because you sit higher like in the proper small SUV. In CX 30 it feels like you sit in the sedan or hatchback.
Great review! I test-drove the Subaru Limited today and just loved it. It was priced at $34k which I thought was a little high. I will have to test drive the Mazda CX-30 as most of the comments are recommending it over the Subaru. I will have to research the reliability of the CVT transmission as there are some negative comments about it. I do prefer the look of the Subaru over the Mazda, plus the rear legroom, cargo room, fold-flat rear seats, wider tires, large touch screen, and maybe a few things I don't even know to mention. It sounds like the choice comes down to personal preference. We will see, thanks!
i have a 2013 crosstrek, its been a great car, but its getting up there in miles so im looking at getting either another crosstrek, a turbo CX-30, a turbo outback, or a Volvo XC 40 or XC-60... the crosstrek is really unbeatable in value, but i already have one that still runs great, and kinda lookng for something a bit sportier and classier to add to the stable..
Great review because this is exactly where I am in deciding which vehicle to buy. Leaning heavily toward the Mazda. I had the dealer remove the rear middle headrest for the test drive and it helped with visibility out the back. I still feel like I need to turn my head to look merging right and there is a giant pillar in the way, but if this old dog can learn a new trick and rely on the mirrors and the blind spot assist, I think it should be fine.
I’m glad my video could be helpful! It’s good to learn new tricks and know the strengths/weaknesses of your car so you’re better prepared and less likely to find disappointments after purchasing. 🙂
I test drove both. Leaned towards the cx30 because of a bit more power and interior finish. The C-pillar can be an issue but I upped sensitivity on sensors for traffic coming up beside me. Helped remedy that. Hope that helped
I think people stopped comparing the CX-30 to the Subaru nowadays idk why but I feel like after renting the vehicle out for a week, I genuinely feel like it should compete with entry level luxury’s such as the Mercedes GLA or the Lexus UX
It probably could! I’m assuming it’s the price point and past vehicle history. But with new models like the CX-90, Mazda may be starting to become a different market? We shall see! 🙂
I grew up with mazda, my 2012 mazda 3 got destroyed this year, then I bought a crosstrek and drove it for a bit but then hail destroyed that. I went back to mazda cx30 because it's so much fun to drive. The crosstrek is better off road but I needed a commuting car more than something off road as I live in the city with smooth roads. The crosstrek was impressive but the cx30 was faster, which provides more confidence in passing highway situations but does have a smaller gastank. I have a bias mazda has always been more fun to drive. Also I like the smaller infotainment system. The subaru system is big and sluggish
Yeah, I get that, those older EJs were not what I would assume were reliable. Auto or manual? I reviewed a 2015 XT forester when I first started doing reviews last year. Just as a fun experience for me to compare to all the new generation models. The whole time I was just hoping it wouldn’t develop a problem as I drove it, haha. 😬
Great review and I enjoyed that comparison review. Nice and detailed and very concise. If I was in the market, I would get the CX30 turbo hands down. My wife and I used to have an AWD Honda Element that was front biased (like the CX30) and would only put power to the rears if the fronts spun. Honestly it handled fine in the few snow and ice storms that we have had in Dallas with all season tires.
Thanks for responding to that question, I appreciate it and will likely do more going forward! You’re right about the 30 Turbo, it’s sweet! Those Elements were neat, I had an FJ cruiser. I always thought it was interesting the direction Honda/Toyota went on that body style. Kinda like how now the new Blazer vs. Bronco is street vs. off road. 🙂
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 I’ll bet you wish you kept your FJ as we wish we kept our Element. Both those vehicles are very highly sought after as I’m sure you already know. I always thought those FJs were the coolest looking SUVs. I see a few of those around Dallas that have been fully restored and look mint.
You’re absolutely right! But we can live off of the memories! My FJ was an 07 so the first year of its modern return. It had the TRD supercharger, leveling kit, 33’s with XD series wheels, front winch, and rock sliders. It felt like a tank. I definitely did not use it to off road but rather pavement prowl, and that it did well, lol. When I finished college and started driving 1,000 a week initially with all the different towns I worked in I quickly learned I needed better than 15MPG. 😅
It was silver with black wheels and hood decal. My wilderness is basically the Subaru version of it, lol. I included a photo or two in one of my Bronco videos. I think it was the silly “5 things I love about the Raptor”. But it may have been one of the other two actual reviews, I can’t remember. 😅
Your review was excellent. I've been reseaeching for about 6 months for my next vehicle purchase ...and my search seems to end up with EXACTLY these two//VERY similar vehicles.... PLUS I SEEM TO HAVE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH A MAZDA 3....B UT REALISTICALLY THE GROUND CLEARANCE OF THE MAZD-3 0F APPROX. 5.5" WOULD PRETTY MUCH RULE THE MAZDA-3 OUT FOR PRACTICAL USE IN MY SNOWYMY SNOWY STATE...... *****RELATED QUESTION???..... YOUR REVIEW DID SHOW THAT THE MAZDA CROSS-OVER IN THIS VIDEO WAS UNABLE TO PRIVIDE A FLAT STOREAGE AREA AS THE BACK SEAT HEADRESTS PREVENTED THE CARGO AREA FROM COMPLETELY FLATTENING OUT...... HOW-EVER: IS IT POSSIBLE TO REMOVE THE HEADRESTS TO ENABLE THE STOREAGE/CARGO AREA TO FLATTEN OUT BETTER??? (I HAD A JEEP CHEROKEE THAT I HAD TO DO THAT TO ENABLE THE BACK STOREAGE AREA TO COMPLETELY FLATTEN OUT.... SOLVED THE PROBLEM.... AND THE SURFACE THEN ALLOWED TWO ADULTS & A DOG TO BE ABLE TO SLEEP THERE COMFORTABLY WHILE CAMPING............ JUST A SUGGESTION!!!
Good suggestion, I’m assuming the head rests pop out as many typically do, but I can’t confirm this as I’ve never paid it specific attention. Best of luck in what you decide on! 🙂
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 .... phone calls tomorrow....with any luck a new vehicle Wednesday.... or so. Really need this resolved. My location pretty much demands that l have "wheels". THANKS FOR THE REPLY!!!
Point worth considering. Toyotas….Hondas….Nissans are obliged to offer cheaper looking interiors do that they dont cannibilize sales off their luxury equivalents….Lexus…Acura….Infinity Mazda n Subaru have no such issues and come across looking higher end (esp mazda)
I have driven a CX-30 and own a Crosstrek 6MT, even though the CX-30 is handsome and faster, just can't understand how so many people buy one, based on how tiny its rear seats are. Of course, then the Crosstreks booth Is tiny as well, but I prefer to carry friends in a confortable manner
Simple. There are lots of single or couples who rarely use the back seat but want a vehicle that is peppy, fun to drive, good handling, easy to park, with some ride height and hatchback utility. For the rare times I might need a very large vehicle, I can rent or borrow one. If you have a family, etc. then step up to the CX-50, CX-90 or the upcoming CX-70.
@@brocklanders6969 dont get me wrong, I have owned Mazdas in the past and I absolutely love'em, fantastic to drive, look at and super reliable. I was actually really excited for the CX-30 before It came out, but after sitting in one, I was put off by its cramped feel inside AND lack of rear space. Why not just get a CX-5 Is beyond me, I am from México and you have no idea how much this thing sells over here, It might be Mazdas hottest selling model.
@@victorteran9766 I JUST test drove the CX 5 and the 30 yesterday and for some reason.. I just liked the 30 more! I might be biased becuase ive never liked bigger vehicles, but the 30 felt better all around than the 5, minus the cargo and rear seat space. The 5s suspension was way more boat like, making it almost feel like we were on an ocean, where as the 30 felt more planted to the earth.
I looked at both, but the lack of power and the CVT transmission in the Crosstrek was a deal breaker for me. The CX30 has a much more luxurious interior as well as the exterior look of a high end car. But, I ended up buying Mazda CX5 the bigger brother of the CX30.
This was a good, straight to the point review. I'm trying to decide between the 2.0 NA Crosstrek (2024 update), the 2.5 NA CX-30 and the Kia Seltos 1.6 turbo (2023 update). So I would appreciate your review of the Seltos and comment on how you think it compares with the other two. Note that the 2.5 Crosstrek engine is not available in my country. All three cars I am comparing are similarly priced here.
I appreciate the feedback! Those all sound like great options. I’m sure whichever one you pick will be a good ride. There’s surprisingly not a Kia dealer within about 100 miles of me so I’ll need to find a lightly used 23 or travel to one. I’ll keep my eye out for a Seltos. Thanks for watching! 🙂
Seltos is a good car, but not nearly as fun to drive as the CX-30. CX-30 is a GEM. Seltos was a good all around ride, but kind of boring to be honest. It's solid but nothing special. CX-30 is for someone who really enjoys driving and cares about how a car handles. It's super fun to drive. It just feels good.
I have a 2022 CX-30 Turbo Premium plus. It is good so far. Definelty probably the fastest in its class. Most likely. If anyone has questions I can try my best to answer.
It seems to be okay I get about 19 mpg mixed I do have a heavy foot I also start the car and leave it to warm up. Also the gas tank is kind of small. I drive about 8 miles to work. This Veicle has a small gas tank also at 10 gallons. I think the Turbo model is the fastest in the class. I do press lightly on the gas when on the highway usually going up to 2,000 RPM then for when the road is clear going up to 3,000 to 4,000. You might get better because you are going further. If you are looking for gas mileage then the crosstreck is your choice if you want something fun then get the CX-30. I also think the Mazda might last longer because Toyota is making them.
Nice review; thanks! I've owned a Crosstrek ('14), and traded it in in 4 years due to the poor seat comfort. I think the newer ones are better, but I'm still not a fan of the interior style and materials. The Mazda is much more stylish and upmarket feeling, although I hesitate to get one simply because the gas tank is so small.
I had a Yaris gas tank for 14 years, which is even smaller and I drove A LOT. It really didn't bother me at all. I've had the CX-30 for a week now and the tank is still half full just driving around town. It's such an awesome car, don't let that deter you. It's the most fun car to drive ever. I've had a Yaris, CR-V, Outback and even an Alpha Romeo. This is the most enjoyable ride out of all of them.
Great review Bud ! Both are too small for us, but if I had to choose between the 2, it’d be the Subie. Subaru simply have the best AWD system on the planet.
Great video. My wife can’t decide between these two. We’re empty nesters, she loves loves the interior of the CX-30, not so much on the orange stitching in the Crosstrek. Why is orange the only choice? Don’t understand that. The CX-30 looks so good on the outside too. We’ve test driven both and still deciding.
It’s definitely a tough decision, because they’re both so good! I hope you guys end up being happy with your choice! The new generation of Crosstrek is basically now showing up at lots, I hope to video one soon. But that means 2023s might get some discounts?! 🙂 Also if you go with the Subaru you could call SoA and see if they’re offering any discounts you might qualify for that they can email you a coupon….😉
Considering the two and rented a CX-30. Main reason I wont get the CX30 is that I hate sitting that low in any car. My partner did not like it for that same reason as well. Also just recently rented the CX-5 that does not have this sitting low issue. The drive in the CX-5 just felt more memorable as well. For the 2024 Subaru crosstrek, the new 11 inch touchscreen multimedia display is just visually far superior to that small display in the Mazda.
It does feel fairly low! You’re right, and the CX-5s in general are just really sweet! I definitely recommend you check out the 11.6” screen in person. I’m not a big fan of it in my Outback Wilderness. Not great graphics or processing speed, I honestly think I prefer the small screen and scrolly dial in my 2023 Miata to it, lol. Thanks for sharing your experiences and watching! 🙂
Subaru has a real 4 wheel drive system. It's not even close. We own both. And I also have a mazdaspeed 3. I love Mazda. But if your comparing these 2 for all rounder. The subaru does everything very well. The mazda is not a off road by any means. If your buying the mazda as a city and highway car, it's fantastic. But if I lived in an area where I deal with unpaved roads mountains or very hill terrain, snow etc. The headlights and fog lights at night on the subaru are outstanding the headlights turn with the wheels, fantastic coverage when riding on curvy roads. The 2 cars are very different. The mazda is fun to drive. The subaru is entertaining to drive if that makes sense. To put it honestly if I had to keep only one it would be the subaru. I love the crosstrek size, ride and capability. Also the huge gas tank on the subaru allows us to drive 500 miles on one tank. It also has better gas mileage than our mazda 30. The mazda gas tank feels like we are filling it every 5 days. A bit aggravating frankly. Again I think Mazda makes great cars I own 2. But the crosstrek is the Swiss army knife of suvs. It does everything very well.
Girlfriend just bought the Premium Package. Absolutely Spectacular Car. You need to do a Video on it also. " Just Saying ". Mazda Knocked this One out of the Park.. It's black on black.. little Pricey - $35.500..Zoom Zoom 😎
I'm thinking Mazda. No issues with head gaskets, no oil consumption issues. The fact that the Crosstrek has a bigger tank is really concerning considering that's usually a sign that it doesn't actually doesn't get the advertised mpg, and they typically don't. No CVT issues, better interior.
@CNCMatrix Actually they have a bigger fuel tank because many people that buy them like to take them miles off the beaten bath. Not alot of gas stations around. I don't believe I've ever heard someone complain about a gas tank being to big. Especially in an suv that gets 33 miles per gallon on the highway. And as an owner it easily gets that. My mazda 30 doesn't get near that
@@rickgarcia8481 I wasn't "complaining" about the tank being bigger, maybe you should go back and read what I said again. Also, my girlfriend opted for the xtrek and it might see 33 highway on a good day. Not spectacular considering it's not that big meanwhile her mom's explorer gets 27 and weighs half a ton more than the xtrek.
@CNCMatrix We own both of these cars and I will tell you the mazda 30 does not get 33 miles per gallon highway, which the crosstrek sport we have does. Add to that, the mazda has a fuel tank 4 gallons less. Sounds like a bonus to me not a concern.
Trying to decide- 2024 crosstrek (no 2023s to be found!) vs 2023 CX 30. The lease on the Mazda is less. Getting it for my college student… I’m torn but I am leaning towards Mazda because of the Subaru 2.0 engine (2.5 so much more expensive). (Edited to add that the lease price- not yet negotiated- is a lot higher for the Subaru)
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 thank you- I know nothing of engines, but I keep hearing that the 2.0 engine is less ideal for merging onto highways (we are in the LA area so this is relevant). Do you agree?
I would think so, I remember a few specific times I was trying to merge in my old 2.0 and it ended up being quite uncomfortable, the 2.5 would have really helped out those situations.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 thank you. That is very helpful. I only test drove on local streets, and I’m not so knowledgeable about cars. I definitely want my daughter to have a car that allows her to merge onto highways easily. Price point for the 2.5 Crosstrek is quite a bit higher than the CX 30.
Good comparison. I'm favoring the CX30 to replace a 2015 Camry. Looking for a taller yet smaller Crossover/SUV with Front or AWD for easy city parking, I still swap on snow tires in Winter months so FWD is fine in western NY. I need backseat for passengers maybe 2 times a year max. I'll test drive both along with Toyota CorollaCross. I'd test a Seltos, Soul or Kona but KiaBoyz video has left my small city Rochester still with occassional attempts to steal Hyundai/Kia models even if its New(er) vehicle with engine immobilizer or older models that have had software upgrade and marked with the window sticker. So skipping Hyundai/Kia for now. Look forward to future comparisons and reviews. Btw. I had minor mid-life car trading 91 Honda Civic hatchback for 96 Miata. Great car even commuting in Tampa and weekends to beachs. Took a job in San Diego. Shipped car out there. Job required travel back/forth to Los Angeles once a month. The Miata went and a 98 Acura Integra took her place. Miata is great car everywhere but in my opinion Southern CA Highways. Something about going 80mph to keep up with traffic including tractor trailer 18 wheelers, every type of large/heavy duty commerical trucks, and fullsize SUVs with nothing but a vinyl top and two feet of trunk to protect me in a rearend collision meant swapping out of Miata lease. LOL Enjoy your Miata and keep it away from LA type highways and enjoy.
I’m glad you enjoyed this video and I really appreciate you sharing some of your vehicle history and insight! Those Kiaboyz videos were insane lol. My in-laws have a Kia that just had the service done for it this past week. Miata’s are awesome, I’m glad you could experience one and I value your impressions of the socal experience! They’re definitely tiny, but my justification is it’s more stable/safe than a motorcycle lol. Take care and best of luck with your next vehicle purchase! 🙂
I narrowed my search for an affordable, reliable subcompact/crossover to these two. I ended up going with a 2023 Crosstrek Limited. The Subaru felt like a better fit for my needs-the Mazda felt almost too fancy for me! While neither brand has amazing tech compared to competitors, I couldn’t get past the console knob in the Mazda. I know some people love it, but it felt dated to me, and I plan on keeping this car for 10-15 years so I wanted something reasonably modern. The cx-30 is a beautiful car though, it was a tough choice.
I agree with your write up and think you made a good decision! Both are great options. And I get it about the scrolly dial, lol. I didn’t think I would like it as much as I did on the Miata. 😅 Enjoy your sweet new Crosstrek! 🙂
I live in North Atlanta around 1100 ft above sea level, and my new CX-30 standard engine will do 0-60 in 7.1 seconds using the bump shifter. Saying they are almost the same is far from the truth. My particular S series has leather (real leather), and the inside really looks more upscale than the Crosstrek. However, performance means more to me than a biased comparison.
I’m glad you’re enjoying your 30, and that’s a very impressive time for a little true altitude. The 30 definitely wins in some refinement and on street performance, but definitely loses once you leave the tarmac. In a city like yours there wouldn’t be much need for the Subaru, but in a lot of more rural areas it comes in handy! Thanks for watching. 🙂
Granted, the fact that the CX-30 has the 2.5L engine standard in the lower trims is a big plus relative to the Crosstrek, but the 2.5L Subaru is very comparable to the 2.5L non turbo Mazda. Zero to sixty in in the non turbo CX-30 in 7.1 seconds seems very.... optimistic.
This was a nice review. I like the Crosstrek exterior better. I like most of the interior of the Mazda better, except for the fact it has less room. I love the seats.
Good question. A good LED is much brighter which makes night time driving much more enjoyable, as long as it doesn’t blind other drivers. Here’s a video I made showing the difference. th-cam.com/video/9y3g_cDP2Gc/w-d-xo.html 🙂
It's the suburu for me bro, thanks for this honest review, from all of my research i found that besides the tesla Y model, the suburu is the safest suv on the road, and as a new driver just learning, the suburu is definitely my pick
That’s awesome! I appreciate you watching! My brother actually has a 2021 Model Y performance and it’s an incredible vehicle. My first few vids on the channel are of that car last summer while on a road trip. Not proud of those videos but had to start somewhere, I’ll do more on it later I’m sure. 😛
What does CUV stand for? I know what SUV is, but not a CUV. So when are you selling your Miata? You keep your vehicles for about 2 years, so I’m curious.
ROFL, listening to you review the Mazda was like you describing a bad date. These two are very different. The Subaru is a person in jeans, the Mazda a business casual suit.
The Crosstrek is more expensive. It will also be more expensive to maintain. I had a 2013 Crosstrek. It was one of the most unreliable vehicles I have owned -- ranking with VW/Audi. I'll pass.
I love the CX-30, but that back seat legroom is quite possibly a dealbreaker. You essentially have to treat it as a 2-seater. It’s OK if you only ever have one passenger, and NEVER use the back seats.
I imagine they hold value decently because they have a reputation for being long lasting reliable Japanese engineered vehicles. You could also play around with KBB or NADA and check values of used ones to assume future linear depreciation of current model years. I just uploaded a 2024 Crosstrek review and will do more trim levels soon. Best of luck! 🙂
And the crosstrek will go places the 'Turbo' CX-30 will fall apart in. My accord 2.0T will blow the doors off of your CX-30. Crosstrek is not meant to blow the doors off of anything.
Size really does matter, oh yea I mean ground clearance… I’d much rather have 8.7” over the 6” ish in the Mazda. The tires on the Subie has more girth, um width, yea, that’s what I meant 🤪 Just JOKING around. Overall, in my humble opinion, the Subie is a better choice
This guy's talking to me about cup holders and apple car play...........I don't give a #@CK about that shit!!!!! The engine, transmission and all wheel drive system is all that matters!!!!!!
It has 8" of ground clearance. We have the 2023 Carbon Edition model as seen in this video, and I won't be thinking one bit about it while hauling my canoe to Northern Wisconsin and UP Michigan remote lakes... unless I see a large rock in the road. If I'd get nervous in the CX-30 over that rock, I'd be equally nervous over that rock in the CrossTrek.
THIS is one I've wanted to see--- not much of a comparison though- a QUALITY vehicle and a cheap piece of crap.. The Mazda just glows with QUALITY- in material- production and everything- the Subaru looks ok- but sounds and feels CHEAP- like it's ready to fly apart any minute.. especially when you have to get on a freeway.. (and being a boxer- could very well fly apart)... Sorry- i sold Subarus for a few years- and know the're GOOD-- I said it FEELS that way- and SOUNDS that way- not that it WOULD. I don't like a CHEAP sounding little pice of tin. I want Quality- anf for the money-- the MAZDA wins HANDS DOWN and the fact that more people are buying subaru- shows this country hs more IDIOTS than clear thinking people.
Dude, I’m LOVING the interior of the Mazda.
That’s Gorgeous !
I just bought a CX-30 and it is THE BEST car ever. Love driving it, so fun and enjoyable all around.
That’s awesome! I’m glad you’re enjoying it. 🙂
I went with the cx 30. The awd is forward biased until you use the trail mode, which actually makes it fantastic off road. It does have issues with deep gullies because of the approach angle, but the grip is crazy good for a compact crossover

No regrets after 1 year thus far & zero issues/problems. I did have to black-out additional portions of the vehicle, however, to get the thicker black cladding & bumper to look like a more natural & integrated part of the vehicle design.
Great write up and congrats on trouble free carbon edition ownership! Those are sweet! Thanks for watching. 🙂
I think that the CX-30 is one of the best values in the auto industry. Good choice!
Are you not in the USA? I heard the mpg is better in other countries, unless Mazda makes hybrid and doesn’t supply the US market
Yes I’m in the USA
You get 45 mpg? Is it hybrid?
Very good insight, I appreciate you sharing and I’m excited for your new CE! Thanks for watching. 🙂
I agree with you 100%. I do love my music, so I added a JBL spare mounted subwoofer, and the sound is phenomenal! The Carbon Edition is the sweet spot!
What is the warranty on both...is suburu lifetime?
This is a solid "off-road demo" of the CX-30.
th-cam.com/video/_nOLkWjjyts/w-d-xo.html
If I was doing excessive/extreme off-road driving, I wouldn't take the CrossTrek, nor the CX-30.
This is true, I appreciate the clarification! Thanks for sharing your insight and experiences. 🙂
Exactly! Lol. Kinda like how I love my Miata clean and garaged, and don’t care that my Outback stays outside and is dirty. 😝
I really appreciated your covering visibility l. I assumed Crosstrek and all Subarus would be better. You are the first reviewer I've seen to make an a tual point by point comparison. Thanks very helpful te iew.
I’m glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching. 🙂
I own a 2022 CX-30 Carbon edition and I love it!
Very nice, glad you’re enjoying it! 😄
Best of luck on whatever you decide! Thanks for watching. 🙂
I ordered a loaded '21 Crosstrek, it msrp'd @ $34,600.
my 2021 crosstrek's CVT gave out after 20k miles. It is not as good as people say it is.
@@LicPlate8VPL158this is what concerns me with the Crosstrek, I really like them but I’ve talked myself out of buying one. 🤔
@@RustyGolfer good! you did yourself a service!
Forgot to mention the "Trail" button on the CX-30 which changes the front-wheel drive bias in the All Wheel Drive Mazda.

There is no trail button
I've been driving buying and selling cars for a long time. Can't beat the cx30.
They’re a great vehicle! Especially those turbo models. 🙂
They're easy to tow.
To tow or be towed?! Lol 🤷♂️😂
i have a 2013 crosstrek, its been a great car, but its getting up there in miles so im looking at getting either another crosstrek, a turbo CX-30, a turbo outback, or a Volvo XC 40 or XC-60... the crosstrek is really unbeatable in value, but i already have one that still runs great, and kinda lookng for something a bit sportier and classier to add to the stable..
I love the comparison videos. Great job here
Good to know, thanks for watching it! 🙂
Hmm, let us other old do 14:10 gs know. That is of some concern to me also leaning CX30.
I test drove both. Leaned towards the cx30 because of a bit more power and interior finish. The C-pillar can be an issue but I upped sensitivity on sensors for traffic coming up beside me. Helped remedy that. Hope that helped
Now you can actually drive and buy the CX30 Carbon but the Corsstrek is hard to get.
We looked at all the crossovers and got a 2021 cx30 select awd due to it being the best bang for the buck.
No regrets.
That’s awesome! I’m glad you’re still enjoying it. 🙂
Subaru for ruggedness and no fear of getting stuck anywhere.
Mazda for elegance and comfort in city.
That sums it up quite well, IMO!
I’m sorry to hear about your vehicles being damaged, but I’m glad it all worked out and you’re back in a Mazda!
I just bought Mazda CX-30 Premium/non turbo. I had Subaru Baja and it was money pit.
Congrats on the new Mazda, I hope it redeems that past experience. Which I’m also sad to hear, I always thought those Bajas were cool. 😅
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 I loved the car. It was a turbo and I blew out the turbo. USD$4000. And more and more. The engine, etc just fell apart.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 i don't think I will ever buy a turbo. Sooner or later it will blow
“I’m not here for a long time, I’m here for a good time”- Turbo. 🥲😆
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 wow, that FJ sounds like a beast! What color was it?
It was silver with black wheels and hood decal. My wilderness is basically the Subaru version of it, lol. I included a photo or two in one of my Bronco videos. I think it was the silly “5 things I love about the Raptor”. But it may have been one of the other two actual reviews, I can’t remember. 😅

Mazda n Subaru have no such issues and come across looking higher end (esp mazda)
That’s a great point of consideration! Thanks for adding your insight, and watching my video. 🙂
Good points! I’m glad you’re enjoying your MT Crosstrek! Thanks for watching. 🙂
@@victorteran9766 $3700 difference in price is why someone might not just get a CX-5 instead.
I looked at both, but the lack of power and the CVT transmission in the Crosstrek was a deal breaker for me. The CX30 has a much more luxurious interior as well as the exterior look of a high end car. But, I ended up buying Mazda CX5 the bigger brother of the CX30.
I get that. The CX5 is an incredible vehicle!
I’m sure the 2.0L in the Crosstrek is starving for power going over the passes to Seattle.
How’s the mpg? I can only find turbos for sale around my area and I drive about 30 miles every day.
Thanks, and for watching! It is a very small gas tank, lol.
What color is that CX-30? Polymetal or Machine Grey?
Poly metal!
Great write up, thank you for sharing! And keep enjoying that Mazdaspeed3!! 😍

Either option you go with is expected to be a very good and safe vehicle. You can’t go wrong either way! 🙂
Can we put Power Lift gate for this trim?
Not on the Crosstrek, and I’m not sure that you can on the cx-30 without looking at the website. Thanks for watching! 🙂
Crosstrek has better awd but its cvt ! I pick cx30 anytime
Definitely a trade off, it’s good to have similar but differing competition. Congrats on your sweet ride! 🙂
Mazda makes Subaru look pixelated 😂 #MazdaFam
Yawn. Enjoy your drugs.
@@AutomotiveAnonymous208 Your reviews of these cars were very helpful in making my decision, so thanks for that!
You made the right choice
Zero to sixty in in the non turbo CX-30 in 7.1 seconds seems very.... optimistic.

Always try to negotiate the price down! Otherwise I’m not sure what that one would specifically blue book for.
I had a Crosstrek with a CVT transmission. I will never buy a car with a CVT again.
This was a nice review. I like the Crosstrek exterior better. I like most of the interior of the Mazda better, except for the fact it has less room. I love the seats.

Actually, according the the latest IIHS tests, the CX-30 is higher rated than the Crosstrek.
@@brocklanders6969 I think what he meant is the eyesight technology as compared to masdaz safety tech. Not the crash test
Good value either way for an AWD vehicle.
What does CUV stand for?
I know what SUV is, but not a CUV.
So when are you selling your Miata? You keep your vehicles for about 2 years, so I’m curious.
Crossover utility vehicle
@@sunset3052 Thank You
Haha hopefully I keep it long term! Hard to imagine what would be a more fun experience without 2-3x the price to play.
ROFL, listening to you review the Mazda was like you describing a bad date. These two are very different. The Subaru is a person in jeans, the Mazda a business casual suit.
😂 😛 Thanks for watching!
Personally don't recommend the Crosstrek it's way overpriced and the engine is gutless. Chassis is great though, also cvts are shit.
You’re right, it has a lot of good things going for it, but some areas that could be better! Thanks for watching!
Ground clearance is 8 inches not 6.9. Look it up. I have one.
You’re right, earlier year low trim levels had the 6.9”. Not sure what happened there, lol. Congrats on a cool car. 🙂
The Crosstrek is more expensive. It will also be more expensive to maintain. I had a 2013 Crosstrek. It was one of the most unreliable vehicles I have owned -- ranking with VW/Audi. I'll pass.
Can’t say I’ve heard many reports that bad of the Crosstrek, even the first gen you had. Sorry to hear it! 🙂
No cvt is the winner
Bought the same Mazda the other day. Only complaint, ride is kinda bumpy.
Nice! Yeah, it’s more sporty suspension definitely stiffens up the ride a bit.
Subaru ruins their cars with CVTs. Definitely not a driver's car. And Subies have reliability issues.
You're about a decade late
Mazda all day over every car in its segment.
I love the CX-30, but that back seat legroom is quite possibly a dealbreaker. You essentially have to treat it as a 2-seater. It’s OK if you only ever have one passenger, and NEVER use the back seats.
Yeah, I would just about agree! Kinda like the back seats of a coupe! 😅🙂
I can’t decide between a 2024 Crosstrek and this. Do Mazdas hold their value good? Subaru isn’t as good if a deal as they used to be either.
Elegant CX30! But still pricey for the higher trim! Common Mazda!!
Of course, right? Lol. Thanks for watching! 🙂
Mazda way more fun to drive. I have the Turbo CX-30. It would blow the doors off the Crosstrek.
That turbo model is very impressive, definitely a much quicker CUV. 🙂
But it's still slow.
Slow or fast, it’s all relative. Since I’ve driven a Plaid, everything now feels slow. Haha 😅🥲
So why don't you buy a sports car? Sounds like that's all you're worried about.
And the crosstrek will go places the 'Turbo' CX-30 will fall apart in. My accord 2.0T will blow the doors off of your CX-30. Crosstrek is not meant to blow the doors off of anything.
Size really does matter, oh yea I mean ground clearance…
I’d much rather have 8.7” over the 6” ish in the Mazda.
The tires on the Subie has more girth, um width, yea, that’s what I meant 🤪
Just JOKING around.
Overall, in my humble opinion, the Subie is a better choice
Correction on the Mazda it’s ground clearance range over the years/trim levels has been 6.9-8”. 🙂
The Mazda FWD CX-30 had 6.9” ground clearance. All AWD CX-30’s have 8” ground clearance. Mazda no longer offers a FWD option.
6 speed auto over cvt any time
Mazda canada ! Bring back the cx3 😢😢😢😢😢😢
That would be nice! Mazda, are you reading this?! 👆
This guy's talking to me about cup holders and apple car play...........I don't give a #@CK about that shit!!!!! The engine, transmission and all wheel drive system is all that matters!!!!!!
lol 😂
The Mazda looks closer to an Audi , the Subaru looks cheap
Crosstrek Limited is a lot better car than the Mazda CX-30 for the value.
The Limited sure is a nice ride! Thanks for watching. 🙂
Disagree. The Mazda is the better value.
Imagine driving and then knowing you need to go down a dirt road. Cross Trek... cool.. Mazda ...oh man I hope I don't damage my beautiful vehicle.
🤣🤣🤣 Me, thinking the same thing. My 2023 6-sp manual crosstrek coming over next month.
It has 8" of ground clearance. We have the 2023 Carbon Edition model as seen in this video, and I won't be thinking one bit about it while hauling my canoe to Northern Wisconsin and UP Michigan remote lakes... unless I see a large rock in the road. If I'd get nervous in the CX-30 over that rock, I'd be equally nervous over that rock in the CrossTrek.
cx30 has tons more plastic cladding, what do you mean by damage?
@@EazybakeEvan - that was part of the reason for choosing the CX-30. We’ll definitely be taking our CX-30 off-road.
@@craigjohnchronicles2504 Enjoy! Better make sure you have a rescue vehicle.
Mazda all the way
THIS is one I've wanted to see--- not much of a comparison though- a QUALITY vehicle and a cheap piece of crap..
