ADHD and Dyslexia: Why Do They So Often Co-Occur?

  • What's the connection between ADHD and dyslexia? Why are so many kids diagnosed with both? We’re still learning a lot about these learning and thinking differences and the reasons why they may so often co-occur.
Fumiko Hoeft MD, PhD, professor of psychiatry at the Weill Institute for Neurosciences at UCSF, breaks down some of the possible reasons for this co-occurrence. Find out what leading researchers know and don’t know about the parts of the brain that each of these learning differences stem from. That research could lead to better ADHD treatment and dyslexia treatment in the future.

I felt relieved and happy when I was diagnosed with ADD & Dyslexia. Because it explained the reason why I struggled so much when I was in school.

My asian parents belive that these terms are excuses for the lazy ones... I tried to talk to them as my younger brother is dyslexic. But, mental health terms, learning differences everything is taboo here. My brother is a freshman in highschool but he still has basic problem like sentence formation and other dyslexic symptoms along with ADHD. But here, the solution to that problem is physical punishment, demotivating the child with words such as looser, useless, trashbag**, and negligence when the child needs his parent's support!

0:22 sorry to hear about this. I wasn’t diagnosed with dyslexia (though I occasionally read a word incorrectly I believe that is my adhd anticipating words as I read but a guess. These diagnoses seem to be stigmatized in every country to varying degrees. I hope he can get the help he needs even if he has to find a way himself, if that is possible and I hope it is.

I'm glad I found this video. My daughter has ADHD. I believe she has dyslexia. The Pandemic and virtual learning has not helped my daughter academically. My daughter has had some great tutors, but they were not able to help her. She is not able to retain information. She is being assessed for Dyslexia and other learning disabilities. Hopefully, we will get some answers and directions. Right now, I don't know what to do.

I wouldn’t worry too much at the moment. As long as you are aware if she is dyslexic, she will be able to learn in different ways much easier than most other kids with dyslexia.

I had and still have short term memory lost from adhd. I was not documented as either until i was 21 and graduating college. Something my dad did was request from teachers to give a week notice for any test. Because for me my long term memory is awesome. If you get it into her long term memory she may retain it better. Always remember It is just as frustrating to your child who deals with this as it is for you. Failing a test is never fun but, she can grow up to be a functional part of society and will learn what she needs.

My heart aches for you and your child . I’m 50+ now. For me it’s been a soul crushing experience living with the ADD non hyperactive- withe the dislexia topped with this ridiculously frustrating memory problem on-top of the learning problems 💔 it hurts me to know I’m intelligent - and have such potential and no way so far to use it consistently. In rare moments of clarity and when the planet’s are in alignment - it’s great …sometimes for an hour at most everything seems clear -I feel inspired and I can actually think …… in those rare moments I think to myself this must be what it feels like to have a normal brain …..then the moment passes and I’m me again . Inconsistency is the only consistent aspect of ME . My wife once asked me …after I tied a wheelbarrow down on her UTE ……how many different knots DO YOU KNOW ? Me …. I don’t know why is that ? She said just about every time I tied her Wheelbarrow onto her Ute I used a different knot than the previous one. I have no idea why that happens . It happens with many many random things . I struggle to learn things then finally something seems to stick in my brain for a few days weeks or year’s ….then without warning it’s simply gone from my brain . I tought myself to do the rubix cube . I Did it every day for years as it calmed my mind , For some reason I stopped doing it for a few weeks . When I picked up the rubix cube weeks later ….I could not do it . It’s just gone from my brain. That was about 5 years ago. This crap drives me crazy. Please keep an eye out for childhood depression . I hope you find the answers you need .

I have dyslexia and ADD. The combination of having both of these makes me suffering with a learning disability. This disability doesn't allow me to retain information when read and sometimes spoken. It also causes me to have gaps in memory and to zone out for large periods of time. This also causes me to deal with anger issues as I feel this is not a representation of my intelligence or my capacity to learn. In writing this message alone my frustrations of dealing with technology just to get my point across via Speak to text Made me wanna quit a few times. As it's stupidly keeps capitalizing words that those that need to be capitalized in the middle of sentences. Had I had the ability to spell them by own I would not frustratingly had to deal with this speak to text design. For over a decade I have been intrested in researching how I read? how to make it easier for me read? But sadly this disability is a true disability the has robbed me from many successes and unfortunately I don't have the support systems I need to make my dreams or To share knowledge a reality. I do not use the Internet do not listen to the radio I do not read and not watch TV as all these are affected by this. The ability to simply partake in video gaming is also affected by this. It's frustrating to know that it's hard to accomplish anything when you're always standing in your own way.

I am also Dyslexic and completely understand. Except I take my time and use the spell check and recheck what I wrote. So much easier than the days before keyboards were common. Holding a pen in my left hand and writing ledgebly and spelling words correctly was always a challenge.
I also don't like watching TV or listening to the radio. I listen to the Bible over and over little bits at a time to learn on TH-cam.
It's a matter.of finding the right career. I was a hairdresser and did massage very well. We learn things through repetition and learn things on a more profound level. Artistic and hands on work like auto body work seem to be good fits of careers.
It was diagnosed in 1969 and stayed back in 2nd grade. It was painful to be slower and have others make fun of me and some teachers were really mean. If anything, it's made me compassionate, understanding and accepting of others. To be a careful listener and intolerant of nonsense. There's a lot of famous people who are Dyslexic.

I also have both these cases and I feel like autocorrect does 50% of the job correcting my mistakes 😂. Even with the ressources that schools offer to try to bring me to the same level as my classmates, I just can’t handle it. It can take me 2h to complete a 30min assignment. Because of these disabilities, I fell into depression and anxiety twice during my most important school year and quarantine added more pressure on me because I don’t know how someone with ADHD can concentrate in a boring class when you are literally in your room and the teacher can’t see you + when the teacher is going threw the notes super quick when you have dyslexia... let’s just say it’s not super encouraging.

(I got carried away and wrote too much, sorry)
I got diagnosed when I was 4 years old with dyslexia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia but out of the three dyslexia was the biggest problem because throughout my life I had a serious problem with keeping my attention, I couldn't concentrate for 3 minutes before completely spacing out from reality for the simplest of things, for example If I readed half a page of a book I would've got lost because of a thought that came from reading a word, I also couldn't stay sit on a chair for more than 40 minutes without playing with something near me like a pen, or even swinging my chair, of course teachers didn't like that and I had to change school at the end of FIRST GARDE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL because my reference teacher bullied me throughout the whole year for it (I now also have social anxiety and relaying on a psychologist thanks to her yaaaay). But now after a journey of 8 years I finally decrease my "symptoms", thought I'm not sure if I also have adhd, this is why it's important for researchers to expand their knowledge and find more answers to this kinds of problems.

Would be great if all the specialist could come together . Figure out something missing or what ever the problem is . Sitting here at the age of 40 and just found out I had adhd anxiety depression and dyslexia.
Tried Wellbutrin and holy hell that wasn't the right one .
Duloxitine has changed my life . Took care of my depression, much of my anger towards the world . Muscle tightness is almost gone . Not having near as much negative thoughts. Use to use a stupid amount of toilet paper to wipe my ass and now is normal again. Generally enjoying life again.
Oh and most my brain fog has cleared up as well .
Only downside seems to be my hdhd has really shown up now . My head never shuts up . Really bad memory . Extremely good long term memory . 0 patients for line ups and bad , slow drivers and people who don't listen to cops ... No idea why , but I want to fix this other stuff as well .
Doctor mentioned he couldn't do much about the ADHD since the Wellbutrin didn't work well with me ..
Open to ideas if anyone has tried to treat ADHD while on duloxitine , Thx

I know that i have dyslexia and adhd. And have had it all through my life, along with parents who were way to young back in the 70’s. I was actually born in late 1970 and have grown up with this. My parents had no idea what the heck was going on with me. My Dad was mostly frustrated with me and would call me stupid and spank me often. Almost every day. I did me no favors. It only compounded my already damaged self esteem and even today at 48 years old, I won’t try to go out on my own and even try to work for myself. I know i can do it, I’m just terrified to try. I excel at my job, and i can usually out think my supervisor as the wish to called. However it is sad to be terrified to try and move up the ladder because of the response i get, which is shunned because, I imagine that they think im inadequate when really I’m the only one who thinks I’m inappropriate. When in fact I completely capable. But i just cant convince myself that I’m better than this. It is soooo painful to be this way. Help. Not sure where to go from here.

      Hi Mark,
Thanks for reaching out. Many people discover they have learning and attention issues as an adult, and you're not alone.
Adult evaluations for learning and attention issues must be completed in person by a qualified professional, like a psychologist, doctor, or learning behavior specialist. This can be done at a community mental health agencies, counseling or study skills center at a local college or university, or a local hospital-based program.
Here’s some information on who can evaluate adults for learning and attention issues: u.org/296krKp
If the evaluation is not covered by your insurance or if you don't have insurance, there are two other things that could help you find an evaluation at a reduced cost:
      1. Find out if any local universities with graduate programs in special education or psychology have clinics that conduct evaluations. These are often offered at substantially reduced cost.
      2. Check with your local county or state adult education office. They may know of private practitioners who perform evaluations on a sliding scale or at reduced cost.
You may want to consider connecting with these organizations in your area:
      LDA: ldaamerica.org/support/state-local-affiliates/
      IDA: eida.org/ida-branches/
In addition, The Workforce Investment Act has created programs for adults with disabilities in every state. They have “One Stop” centers in each state that can help find the services, training and support you need. Keep in mind each state has different services and programs. You can visit their website and enter your zip code on the left side, it will find the closest One Stop Center for you: www.servicelocator.org/
      We hope this helps.

I was diagnose with mild dyslexia and ADHD when I was in elementary school (4th or 5th grade). I recently checked my reading skills and still read at a (coincidently) 4th or 5th grade reading speed. I checked because my son who is in 2nd grade can read SO fast (apparently takes after his mom). Though my dyslexia is what it is, I recently tried CBD Genesis Vape oil (no flavors - and organic - it's in a blue bottle with a white label, black lettering, and a green line and logo). I have never use medication but decided to try CBD because I am in the process of taking a test. I can definitely tell a difference. I only take it when studying because I feel like I lose my motivation (become too relaxed and not thinking of a million different things)...which i am not use to experiencing. You may want to consider trying it.
If you want to try it, I'd say buy the oil I mentioned above, and use a vape pen that release very little vape (I have tried 3 different ones and a ceramic cartridge worked the best...but not the one that makes a cloud....that is WAY too much at once and it makes me caugh anyway...too much vape). A good pen that will last is from o2vape.com
This is the pen I got
      o2vape.com/product/ceramic-vape-pen-kit-buttonless/
Buttonless is better bc you dont have to find the button, thus easier to use. The ceramic cartridge last so long (still using the same one, though I dont use it too often, I've had it for approx. 8 months), and this is a "slim pen" which allows a small amount of vape out; unlike the ones that make the user look like a freight train or uncle Buck's car (movie). Oh, AND its recommended for the buyer to use a 1A charger (old iPhone charger is perfect) to charge it...anything higher will damage the battery. The site sells the wall charger for $5, which is work it bc they recommend using a PC USB port...which takes WAY too long (I think it took over 3 hours to charge when I tried that mehod).
Sorry for the long writing. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.

I know someone who has been offered a full time job, but he has difficulty reading and writing due to ADD and Dyslexia. He is 65 years old. Can he get a tutor and be able to become good enough for the paperwork he needs to write.

    • @UnderstoodOrg
      @UnderstoodOrg  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Testing - Thanks for reaching out on behalf of your aquaintence. The Workforce Investment Act has created programs for adults with disabilities in every state. They have “One Stop” centers in each state that can help with finding services, training and support needed. Keep in mind each state has different services and programs. They can find the closest One Stop Center by searching the appropriate zip code on their website: www.servicelocator.org/.
They may also want to consider connecting with organizations in their area, that can provide a better idea of local services and opportunities:
      LDA: ldaamerica.org/support/state-local-affiliates/
      IDA: eida.org/ida-branches/
      We hope this helps.

    what about adhd and dyscalculia?

    • @UnderstoodOrg
      @UnderstoodOrg  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Irene Eneri,
Thanks for your question. While we don't have a specific article about the co-occurence of dyscalculia and ADHD, according to Nelson Dorta, PhD, a pediatric neuropsychologist, “Dyscalculia often co-occurs with ADHD and other conditions." This is from the article "Research Roundup: New Findings on ADHD, Dyslexia, and Dyscalculia" u.org/3iyIeln
      We hope this helps.
      Best,

Is it just me or is it kind of funny that most of these comments are spelled horribly wrong hey don’t get mad I’m aloud to laugh at that I have ADD and dyslexia and couldn’t read till I was 9 years old

Attention deficit is the wrong phrase - it’s unregulated attention- the deficit is demeaning - it means lacking - the opposite is often true!

It’s because slow processing speed causes dyslexia and is constantly misdiagnosed as ADD.
