      Practice on a beat up car or non concerning one if you can . New stick drivers panic with newer nice cars. Find good nice friend to teach you. Boyfriends or family members seems impatient and gets mad not understanding all rookie have the initial learning curve. I bought my first manual almost two weeks ago. My parents have always owned them. With watching them, I understood the concept very well. I can hear when it needs to go into a higher or lower gear. Before buying this car I had tried driving 3 manuals. All of them were very different from the other. This one was no exception. I started in a empty parking lot. My friend was wondering why I asked for lessons due to being able to get it into first without much trouble. I told him that it was because I wasn't sure when to upshift or how. Little did I know, that was the easiest part of all. I felt confident enough in my ability, I decided to make a run to the store. BIG MISTAKE! I got the car started, when into reverse for the first time, got to the end of my complex, made a full stop, got it going in first, then second, then third without a problem. I was SUPER EXCITED and very proud. I was smiling like an idiot. I approached a red light. "I got this" with a smile still in my face. Nope. I kept stalling through 3 lights. Cars behind me were honking, flashing their headlights and I was stressing out big time. My smile went from big and bright to a huge frown and tears. Thankfully a truck with two men in it asked if I needed help. One knew how to drive a stick so they drove me home. It was extremely embarrassing, frustrating and caused me not to drive the car. Since then, I practice in quiet neighborhoods with stop signs to get a better grasp on how to get it rolling into first. I still stale occasionally trying to give it too much gas and releasing the clutch too soon. This guy is COMPLETELY 100% correct. PUSH THE CLUTCH BEFORE STALING!!!! It will save you time from having to start over and getting anxiety due to rude drivers. Take your time!!! But before you decide to get on the road with other drivers make sure you're completely comfortable and don't take too much time. Relax. Practice makes perfect.

Im 5 days into driving manual now and I usually stall once a day but its only when I'm nervous like if I'm at a stop sign and I know I could be the car thats coming. Im able to downshift and do everything just fine except for getting going thats where I struggle. planning on going to a parking lot aswell.

    For the discouraged I've actually heard multiple people say driving manual is easy, I will say there is a learning curve but it does get much better!
    I have been behind the wheel of my manual car less than a dozen times and the advice about pressing the clutch right back in should help me, I was actually hoping to get advice on complete stops on a hill, these country-ish town roads suck and people will stop riiiight behind my bumper almost giving me no room to roll.
    My first time driving manual was awful but I was given no advice at all didn't know what I was doing in the slightest and it showed. Second time I was given more advice but still harmful advice for my car like "cheat just crank the gas first and then ease off the clutch so you don't stall". That WILL work but what my friend who is into cars and drives manual has said is that you will burn out your tires and clutch that way. Prior to that advice my car smelt for 2-Days. After that I was able to drive myself 40 minutes round trip to work with minimal stalling and that was only on my 4th and 5th time behind the wheel.
    Now I'm still in my first week of learning and I stalled my poor car 9 times at an intersection actually getting frustrated with myself because of the impatience of the drivers behind me blowing their horns. Traffic lined up beside me, nobody could pass if they wanted to so I just had to move. I ended up cheating and skrrrrted my way into the turn but I may have only stalled it 4 times if I hadn't had people blowing their horns.
    All I want for Christmas is patience from other drivers but I won't get that so I need to find hill advice.

    I love this video because I feel like a lot of manual "teachers" don't teach clutch control. My friend who tried to teach me didn't try to teach me clutch control, he was just saying do even gas and release. If you just practice launching your car with your clutch only it will help you:
    1: Find the bite point
    2: stop the leg shakes if you have restless leg syndrome
    3: make you more confident because now you know how manual works.

I have another lesson tomorrow and looking forward to see how this technique works out. Thanks!

    Thanks for the tip. I suffer from a severe case of amaxophobia (extreme fear of driving) and I've been avoiding driving a car ever since I got my driving license, which was more than 10 years ago. I've now been offered a job in the outskirts of town and driving is the only way to get there, there's just no other option. I break out into a cold sweat just thinking about it. These videos are a welcome relief. And yep, to make matters worse, I have to drive a manual.

    Thank you for making this video!! I just how to move my boyfriends truck into the parking garage. It's a stick and while I have driven his truck once and another stick about 16 years ago I am still at best a novice and driving them. All I needed to do was back out of a street parking space turn left at one stop sign and then turn left into the parking garage where I would need to zigzag to our parking space and then park and align the truck with two cement columns and not hit the car in front of our space. I was nervous but I never stalled until I got to the parking space thanks to your advice! I now have greater confidence and will continue to keep driving stick shift's!

    It's really strange. In the UK if you pass your driving test in an automatic car then you are not permitted to drive a manual. Obviously if you do your driving test in a manual you can drive either.
    Usually you can tell where the 'biting' point is by applying the handbrake and then releasing the clutch to the point where the front end of the car begins to dip. Then release the handbrake and apply a little gas and you will be smoothly away. This helps especially on hills where you can't use the brake peddle at the same time as the gas.

    You're wrong mate. using the clutch without gas will stall in a lot of petrol cars. it could actually fail your driving test - in Scotland or England anyway.

    • @matt4239
      @matt4239 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      theJaiGe using the clutch like that helps you to pull out slightly at junctions where visibility is poor etc. Did this all through my lessons and test and passed.

    • @JaiGe_Wins
      @JaiGe_Wins 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      you can pull out of junctions with a little bit of gas too though. If you pull out of a junction that has even a minor incline in a petrol car without using the gas, there's a big chance you could stall / put yourself in danger. I know people can pass that way but it's bad practice.

    • @Gspeed23109
      @Gspeed23109  7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      +theJaiGe yea I know what you are saying. But I'm only teaching people on how to start getting the feel of their clutch so they know where the clutch starts to engage. Not for them to go out on the street and drive. Sorry for the misunderstanding

    • @matt4239
      @matt4239 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      theJaiGe this is how everyone in the UK drives and is taught so wouldn't call it bad practice at all, the opposite even it's a good technique to get the hang of. The vast majority of UK drivers still drive manual out of preference, where we drive on old medieval or roman roads and not the large open ones you find in the United States.

    • @JaiGe_Wins
      @JaiGe_Wins 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Matt, I don't know one person who has been taught this way. I have even seen advanced instructors say using no gas is really bad practice, so I don't know where you are getting the " This is how everyone in the UK drives" from. Not one person I know who drives would recommend doing this other than to get a feel for the clutch in the first lesson or so.

    Sorry, but your tutorial is actually wrong.
    The strategy of never using gas at the beginning to start moving ONLY works if the car has enough foot pounds of torque.
    You drive a Mustang so chances are it will work for you every time; however, with a car like a Toyota Corolla with very little torque, the car WILL stall. No matter how slow you release the clutch. Sorry.

I mostly struggled exactly at the lights, or not putting the clutch in, on time. Example when someone pulled out in front of me and had to brake hard or when a pedestrian would walk out as I'm turning , it's great and really fun. I would never ever drive an auto. 👍

I did stall a few times and people honking, but I just gotta get out (hopefully in less traffic) and keep trying. It was Very nerve wracking though...I feel ya. But at least your starting Young! I am 30!

    Once you've stalled at a green light yourself, you can never be mad at anyone for doing the same. Its just like damn I feel you bro I remember that happening to me and it sucks.

    I have a permit and I know how to drive An automatic. However my grandpa is going to lend me his Manual if I can learn how to drive it. I'm starting this week, this video actually helped me a lot. Thank you. Wish me luck! Ive never even attempted to drive on before so this should be fun. Yikes

      just a couple of questions or more : 1. Why does it stall ? ( what is causing it to stall ) 2. on a level terrain you can move slowly forward just by using the clutch *bite point* but isn't doing this frequently cause more wear to your clutch disk ? 3. just for an experiment, if i press the clutch all the way to the floor, press gas to too much like 4000 RPM, and at the same time slowly release the clutch, and the car was almost not yet moving before i released the clutch is that going to stall ?

      +J3AN P3T3R 1. Your transmission/clutch controls the power of the engine. Gears are there to slowly pick up the power of the motor until a desired speed. So the reason the engine stalls, is because at idle the engine only produces around 1/100th of its power(almost nothing) so if your RPMs drop below 500 you are basically giving the engine no where to place its power so it shuts down. 2. No! 3. Depends on the size of your cars engine. Typically if you do that in a sports car you will either do a burn out or speed off really fast. Because 4000 is a lot of power regardless if you let off the clutch fast.

      aight thanks that clears things a lot. so does this mean that for as long as you have enough RPM before you slowly let off the clutch it wont stall ? im asking this because as a student it is difficult for me to quickly creep in traffic without stalling especially in a slope. on a leveled terrain is there a way for me to move the car using gas whilst my clutch is halved or in between the bite point and the floor ?

    reverse is the best way to learn where the clutch grabs. that's how my uncle taught me.

      LonewolfSaichi haha I don't know why but while reversing, it just feels natural as to how to engage the clutch and gas in harmony.

      I’m barely starting to learn Manual today and for some reason I struggled getting into first and not stalling, but as soon as I put it in reverse it felt natural and way easier to find that clutch grab. Practice makes perfect I just hope I don’t mess up my car while learning haha.

      sophiie_sbeezy try feathering the gas. That helps a lot. And it also helps if you get good shoes. Like i know im more prone to stall with certain shoes

    I just wanted to say THANK YOU I couldn't even get into first gear!! Now I'm actually starting to feel confident, just need more practice to get use to it, I just practiced in my drive way going back and fourth, also for anyone thats struggling, let your foot off the clutch slowly, once you feel that little jerk forward thats when you should let go of the clutch and give it gas, I was struggling and I think I was fucking something up cause I smelt something burning, I started letting go of the clutch till I felt that jerk and putting pressure on it again when It was about to stall just to get the feel for when im suppose to start giving it gas, once I got semi confident that I could get the timing right I went for it, again and again and again, im gaining confidence, but like I said, I need to practice
