It's even cooler since it's before they even did their first album, and even then Tommy The Cat wasn't on that album it was on the second so just proves how even before then they had devout fans
@@Tomversal The crowd chanted "Say Baby!" during the recording of their first album. This _is_ their first album, released in 1989, but yeah they had a decent local following already. Frizzle Fry is their 2nd (1990). Seas of Cheese (1992), the one with the studio version of Tommy the Cat is their 3rd.
yes! this version for me is much better than the studio version. it's a little slower with 10x the groove and that bass solo!! this is also the first version of the song I heard so I might just be a little biased. Primus Sucks!! one of the best band live!
I bought the cassette of this album and the tshirt from Les himself. After the show, Ler and Les asked if I wanted a hit off their bong as I was getting in my car, parked next to their van in the parking lot. I declined, because I had to work in the morning. Doh! But yes, this is the best version of the song.
It is truely a privilege to hear this version, the song didn't release on album for another two years. Being a regular to shows was the only way to hear it.
Well, I remember as it were a meal ago Said Tommy the Cat as he reeled back to clear whatever foreign matter May have nestled its way into his mighty throat Many a fat alley rat had met its demise while staring point blank down The cavernous barrel of this awesome prowling machine Truly a wonder of nature this urban predator Tommy the Cat had many a story to tell But it was a rare occasion such as this that he did She came slidin' down the alleyway like butter drippin' off a hot biscuit The aroma, the mean scent, was enough to arouse suspicion in even the Oldest of tigers that hung around the hot spot in those days The sight was beyond belief Many a head snapped for double--even triple--takes as this vivacious Feline made her her way into the delta of the alleyway where the most Virile of the young tabbies were known to hang out They hung in droves Such a multitude of masculinity could only be found in one place And that was O'Malley's Alley The air was thick with cat calls (no pun intended) But not even a muscle in her neck did twitch as she sauntered up into The heart of the alleyway She knew what she wanted She was lookin' for that stud bull She was looking for that he cat And that was me Tommy the Cat is my name and I say unto thee Say, baby, do you want to lay down with me? Never really listened to Primus when they came out, I thought it was strange music. Now I'm 48 and understand it, and that they're musical geniuses and I just can't get enough of them. These live recordings are the best! Are there any video footage of this?
That bass solo is cool I don't know why they didn't put that in the studio version, probably because that would make that too long but for a pearl like this. Not to mention Ler's Guitar! 🤟
Its so difficult to rank the 3 versions cuz they're all so fantastic!! I love this one cuz its a classic and the solos are incredible and even the instruments sound really tight. But the Studio version has Tom Waits which is just so epic and iconic and then the Rhinoplasty live version has Awakening which is just insane!! I can't choose, they're all great!!!! PRIMUS SUCKS!!!
Les plays according to crowd reaction and demeanor, you can read a person "dog will hunt" jason lee or any other smoker "we can smell our own" and as a musician/hunter/Angler. Our first Gig, standing still trying not to choke. I was reading him on the dennis miller TTC and hes getting a buzz off the crowd. first looks like "dont choke" first time. then goes "I are robot" for maybe 3-4 repetitions then starts his what i call his "crab walk" id love to see how he read this crowd by seeing if hes looking over/under the crowd
I had the same question when building my kit. Ending up with a 3.5" x 13" steel shell Pearl free floating snare. Basically a picollo. Tighten it up as high as she goes & have at it!
Generally speaking I'm not a live album guy. It's like an oxymoron to me. I live being at a live show, but love albums are in most cases terrible quality versions of studio albums. They were just something for a label to sell "in the meantime". That said there are a few bands that have put out superior live albums than the studio versions or studio version of the songs. This is one of them. Pudding time live and this are so raw and loud they nailed it. They captured the raw and loud of a live performance without losing quality. Some other albums I put in this category would be like decade of aggression from slayer and live after death by iron maiden and tool opiate even tho there is no studio versions that lil album is ridiculous I think for me tho one of the things that makes this particular live album is the drums of all things lol. The one revolving door. But these drums on this album remind me of John Stainer from the Helmet era
no, he says “say baby do you wanna lay down with me? a-say baby do you wanna lay down by my side? say baby do you wanna lay down with me? say baby? SAY BABY?!?!”
Hearing the crowd chant, "SAY BABY!" along with Les is one of the coolest things ever.

Yeah but I meant first studio album sorry
Hands down the greatest version of Tommy the Cat
This version of Tommy the Cat is the GOAT.🔥
I like this version better than the studio version, if only for the extended bass solo.
Yep. Agreed!
me too... love this version
+Diego Molinero Olschansky this version is wild!Primus sucks!👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻Anyone wanna sail the seas of cheese while drinkin' some fine pork soda!⛵️🧀🧀 🐖🍷

I remember. I loved & went to all the Primus shows.
As someone from the Bay, who saw Primus back in the early days, this version is the quintessential version.
I have an album from The Germ which has one of the first recordings of this song on it. It got me hooked... Sorry for the late reply
The concept of Funk Metal might make people cringe today, but for us 90's kids when Primus and Faith No More blew up we were very happy.
If anyone hasn't listened to Butters the Cat yet DO IT. I thought it was a joke.
Matt Stone actually voices Butters on stage with Les. It is awesome
literally the best song of the south park performances
SAY BABEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEH
Great , best version
Tommy the Cat < Tommy the Cat live
w/ herb drumming only tho.
Well, I remember as it were a meal ago
Said Tommy the Cat as he reeled back to clear whatever foreign matter
May have nestled its way into his mighty throat
Many a fat alley rat had met its demise while staring point blank down
The cavernous barrel of this awesome prowling machine
Truly a wonder of nature this urban predator
Tommy the Cat had many a story to tell
But it was a rare occasion such as this that he did
She came slidin' down the alleyway like butter drippin' off a hot biscuit
The aroma, the mean scent, was enough to arouse suspicion in even the
Oldest of tigers that hung around the hot spot in those days
The sight was beyond belief
Many a head snapped for double--even triple--takes as this vivacious
Feline made her her way into the delta of the alleyway where the most
Virile of the young tabbies were known to hang out
They hung in droves
Such a multitude of masculinity could only be found in one place
And that was O'Malley's Alley
The air was thick with cat calls (no pun intended)
But not even a muscle in her neck did twitch as she sauntered up into
The heart of the alleyway
She knew what she wanted
She was lookin' for that stud bull
She was looking for that he cat
And that was me
Tommy the Cat is my name and I say unto thee
Say, baby, do you want to lay down with me?
Say, baby, do you want to lay down by my side?
Ah, baby, do you want to lay down with me?
Say, baby?
Say, baby?
Absolutely the best version!
Forever so dope❤️much respect ❤️
Every tune on this album kicks a$$.
this was my introduction into greatness back in the day...
I saw these guys open for All and The Melvins in a tiny bar in San Jose CA. I bought this cassette and a "Suck On This" T-shirt from Les personally.
My first Primus show was before Sailing the seas with cheese was released. It was a small bar in Miami called Washington square and Tad opened
Good thing too because greatness aint a thing anymore
Still the only album in history that hits

Dennis Miller live it's there but Primus sucks, totally not worth searching tommy the cat! Well the Dennis Miller one is close not same crowd
@@christinawells4160tommy the cat is one of THE best, if not, the best primus song 😭💔

1:03 I love the silence of the bass after he does the 4 4 2 down and up on that thing
Say bayba!! "PRIMUSSUCKS! ♥️♥️♥️
Holy shit this one's savage compared to the studio one
The whole album being live is the best
Thank you! Your wit is quick
He still does this version of the bass solo partway through the end of the song. That's some serious consistency right there.
Legendary ❤❤❤
Damn that bass solo though
Herb is the shit! Listen to this again, but just concentrate on the drums! Holy Jeez that dude is good!
It's Herb the ginseng boy on the kit. Him & Ler joined a couple months prior to this recording.
This is WAY BETTER than the studio version!!!
She was looking forh thatt stud bull.

my personal favorite is Bonaroo 2011, but the other 3 are just amazing
Don't forget the 2018 live version where he slapped for literally over a minute on the 6 string bass
My favorite is Rosklide 1991

I like this rendition better than the album cover.
how do you get that snare drum sound
CS:GO Dank Radio maybe a steel piccolo snare with really high tuning
You can’t you’re not god

Roland e-drums (starting with at least a TD-12 or 20) and V Expression packages . ;-)

Without Tom Waits this song feels kinda empty to be honest.
Who's tom waits
@@honeybadger1810 He sung the part of Tommy The Cat on the studio version. He’s been a legend in the music business since the 70s
Pfft. No disrespect to Tom Waits, but he pretty much ruined this song.
