Ler is a very important part of Primus’ sour sound. He’s also just a flat-out amazing guitarist. The title track “Frizzle Fry” has him doing more conventional soloing at the end in addition to a bunch of excellent riffs, just in case you doubt his ability to lead a song. Primus may have been able to replace their drummer at one point, but they’d be hard-pressed to replace Ler.

alot of people miss the message this song brings, it doesnt matter if you feel different and standout, as long as youre doing what you love staying true to yourself it doesnt matter what anyone thinks or wants for you. Youre, your own being with your own choices, your own happiness, and your own end. Dont be controlled.
It also pays tribute - in a roundabout way - to those who still understand the importance of the trades …. Like fishing and fishmongering, agriculture et al, lol…. I mean - all those kids making fun of him for wanting to be a fisherman…. What would they be doing now? Asking for student loan bailouts? Paying alimony and child support to the ‘farmers’s daughters’? Lol - maybe 🤔 that’s going too far, but, …. Consider some validity to that interpretation…. 😁🤣 Cheers 🍻 …
@@TackJorrance Primus is considered metal by a lot of people. The guy is flat out wrong though, some of the best metal albums ever came out in the '90s and the existence of shitty music doesn't make the good music any less present.

When I was kid, I used to f*n hate Primus. Now, 15 years later, I can't stop listening to that shit. Definitely and acquired taste, but my god, does it taste good.
South Park's "Guitar Hero Episode" brought me here, been tryin' to find this song ever since I first heard it, sooooooooooooo happy I found it!!!!!(Heard it on XM Radio & almost crashed, I was sooooooooooooooooo excited to finally hear this!!!!!😄💕😄💕)
(also in response to AL and loj: Les played (before Primus and auditioning for M.) in Blind Illusion (Marc Biedermann's band), with Ler. Good to know P. and M. were friendly, aren't they still...?
I think the thing that I always found interesting or at least, from their videos, and the way they play, is that they don't seem like people who would normally hang out together. Jerry is probably the perfect song to describe it I guess. The guitar does not go with the bassline in that song other than it's in the same tempo. The bass sounds something jazz, the guitar sounds punk rock, and the drums sound like Danny Carey's and Neil's abandoned lovechild. Put 'em together and you have a song that just sounds oddly disjointed and then at the end it all comes together. This song is somewhat similar in that respect except the bass and guitar go together pretty well in this one.
I have always f'n loved this band. They are all so talented, but the drums have to be my favorite part. So badass in every song. It's like Rush on magic mushrooms!
This song's about a boy who follows his passion no matter what anybody tries to tell him. We can all stand to be a little more like John the Fisherman.
That's kinda what I thought. Metal hitting metal (or rocks) underwater, just like Jerry Was A Racecar Driver sounds like racecars zooming past for most of the song.
Primus is one of my favourite bands and Les Claypool is one of my biggest influences on bass, this song is just so damn good. Also 2:22 Kirk Hammett is just chilling on the boat while Les, Larry and Herb are all rocking out
High level power trios (Rush, The Police, Primus, etc.) always seem to have some incarnation of these same attributes. Top shelf bass and drums with a guitar player who understands the use of space and atmosphere over all else.
"Hey Les, wanna go fishing with us and the boys" "Nah man, gotta think up a song for us to jam to" "Aww come on man, it'll be fun, it'll clear your mind and give you some good ideas" "Aight, you convinced me"
I just got home from seeing les , ler, and herbage in Troutdale oregon! They sucked so bad! I loved seeing them , they rule! 11 years old
And its fantastic
Gotta love Les Claypool singing while plugging his nose or something. Their vocals always crack me up. It's more about sounding theatrical than technically impressive.
There are three things I miss from modern music videos.
1. Guitars
2. Basses
3. Drums
that might be some of the realest shit I've heard all week
+kx454 But think of all the money you'd miss out on if everyone has to take the time to master their instruments!
+kx454 you forgot TALENT, that's a big one...
+Samuraisahsah Some of them got talent it's just that they are too dumb to use it and instead go for the big bucks aka dumbed down crap pop for the masses.
+Hairy Potter like a miracle happened when you focus? what's a ghost note mean?
What goes unnoticed within the general Claypool hysteria is that obnoxious and grinding guitar. Music to my ears.
I love when Ler plays circus music on his guitar.
I first came to Primus for Les, but stayed for Ler (and Herb of course)
"John The Fisherman"
When he was young you'd not find him doing well in school,
His mind would turn unto the waters.
Always the focus of adolescent ridicule,
He has no time for farmer's daughters.
Alienated from the clique society,
A lonely boy finds peace in fishing.
His mother says "John this is not the way life's supposed to be."
"Don't you see the life that you are missing?"
And he says...
When I grow up I want to be,
One of the harvesters of the sea.
I think before my days are done,
I want to be a fisherman.
Now years gone by we find man that rules the sea.
He sets out on a dark May morning .
To bring his catch back to this small community.
He doesn't see the danger dawning.
Four hours up, oh the ocean swelled and swelled,
The fog rolled in it started raining.
"The starboard bow." "Oh my God we're going down!"
The do not hear his frantic mayday.
And he says
When I grow up I want to be,
one of the harvesters of the sea.
I think before my days are done,
I want to be a fisherman.
"I'll live and die a fisherman."
Calling John the Fisherman.
ededmax thanks!
I'd like to take these guys down the river in my drift boat steehead fishing
always thought he was saying "one of the hardest to salt the sea"
@@A.B.I.MA. I cant unhear it now
ededmax jjowoj
I remember playing this and doing the Claypool Stomp on GH2 with my son when he was little!
Les Claypool writes his lyrics about the most random crap ever.... And it's still miles better than anything that modern pop artists can write.
fuck yea, but the thing is at least Les can keep on track of the main topic of the song... fishing ;)
+Salty Sea Pickle very ironic name
PBAFan12 How so?
Salty Sea Pickle >is a song about a fisherman, which goes over the ocean/lake
>salty >SEA< pickle
:^_)
PBAFan12 That's not ironic, it's coincidental.
Can we all agree that the swag and groove on all of them is just criminal...? I mean... damn
thats GenX not gen useless thats why
Son: When I grow up I want to be-
My inner primus: A HARVESTER OF SEA
alot of people miss the message this song brings, it doesnt matter if you feel different and standout, as long as youre doing what you love staying true to yourself it doesnt matter what anyone thinks or wants for you. Youre, your own being with your own choices, your own happiness, and your own end. Dont be controlled.
It also pays tribute -
in a roundabout way -
to those who still understand the importance of the trades ….
Like fishing and fishmongering, agriculture et al,
lol….
I mean -
all those kids making fun of him for wanting to be a fisherman….
What would they be doing now?
Asking for student loan bailouts?
Paying alimony and child support to the ‘farmers’s daughters’?
Lol -
maybe 🤔 that’s going too far, but, ….
Consider some validity to that interpretation….
😁🤣
Cheers 🍻

Ah the 90's. Ah real instruments and talent. Also Les is a gift from the bass gods...anything he does.
90s was the beggining of the age of nu metal (limp bizkt etc). Definetly not a good time for metal
@@TackJorrance Primus is considered metal by a lot of people. The guy is flat out wrong though, some of the best metal albums ever came out in the '90s and the existence of shitty music doesn't make the good music any less present.
Jim Jam Banana Slam 90s had RIP, Painkiller, The Downward Spiral, all of Death’s brilliant releases in that decade and the first SOAD album. Probably the golden age of metal
And Alice In Chains
This came out in 88 or 89... They were ahead of their time.
best intro i've ever heard..first time i ever heard this song was at a party my junior yr of H/S and i was taking a bong rip... that drum line always brings back nostalgia
popacap21 I like how they start it in the Suck on This version with YYZ in the beginning.
The first time i heard this i was in the 4th grade and my dad was jamming along to it on his bass
It’s amazing 2019
When I was kid, I used to f*n hate Primus. Now, 15 years later, I can't stop listening to that shit. Definitely and acquired taste, but my god, does it taste good.
wakey wakey, eggs and bakey.... check out Frank Zappa then fucker ;)
Same here man I just turned 30 and Primus hit me like a fucking bat. I was like shit I was dumb
Primus sucks
@@urabampot primus took me to Zappa, it's like a first step
Honestly not even Gordon Ramsey himself could whip up a such delicious licks
South Park's "Guitar Hero Episode" brought me here, been tryin' to find this song ever since I first heard it, sooooooooooooo happy I found it!!!!!(Heard it on XM Radio & almost crashed, I was sooooooooooooooooo excited to finally hear this!!!!!😄💕😄💕)
me too
Bruh these guys litterally wrote the South Park intro they are at the credits of every single episode
"But can you play John the Fisherman?"
"Why sure I can. On GH2"
"He can play John the fisherman, acoustically."
\m/ South Park \m/
Youtub3rh4x0r morshus right but he could not be such an ass
Youtub3rh4x0r I think... he was joking.. maybe...
Youtub3rh4x0r the bait is fucking real
Shane Desormier BAIT? FISHING? GET IT?

The dude laying down on the boat is Metallica's James Hetfield. Both bands were friendly coming up in the bay area. (or so I read). Also, best lyrics.
kirk is in this video and he and les claypool went to high school together.. claypool even tried out for metallica after newstead left the band
Andy Lepretre He tried for Metallica before Newsted came, when Burton died.
(also in response to AL and loj: Les played (before Primus and auditioning for M.) in Blind Illusion (Marc Biedermann's band), with Ler. Good to know P. and M. were friendly, aren't they still...?
laser beam I know this is late, but they are, les claypool was on lars’ podcast 3 months ago
This song still goes hard after 33 years
All three of them are so friggan talented.
yea people like to compare to rush a lot.
This song is somewhat similar in that respect except the bass and guitar go together pretty well in this one.
oh fuck off, it's 2017 stop hating amazing bands
I think the guitarist used to be in Possessed....not sure...
Your speaking my language ,I totally agree there amazing !
When MTV arrived here in Brazil, I watched this video clip. I really went crazy with this song.
What a cool band.
So unique.
Anyone else under 25 soaking this in?

Primus SUCKS!
Me
I have always f'n loved this band. They are all so talented, but the drums have to be my favorite part. So badass in every song. It's like Rush on magic mushrooms!
The bass line of any Primus is always epic and like most have said that snare paired with it it's just amazing
U like ministry?
Herb had a killer drum sound on this album
It's so dirty and organic, and that snare pops like a week old pimple. Definitely one of my favorite kit sounds, and such an underrated drummer.
@@shadyacr - For sure...
@ian lee
"That snare pops like a week old pimple" is poetry
youtube video is almost 10 years old...crazy.
+willy hearrell the music video is from 2000 the song is from 1993
+ArcuateWhale475 no, its from 1990....wtf it looks nothing like 2000
+willy hearrell still good song!
+ArcuateWhale475 lol I know. I mean from when it was uploaded to TH-cam. Its crazy seeing how old TH-cam is to me now. Thats all.
+and. ivan xD still a VERY great song hahaha!
This song's about a boy who follows his passion no matter what anybody tries to tell him. We can all stand to be a little more like John the Fisherman.
The bass is what the bottom of the ocean sounds like
The intro to My Name is Mud sounds like dinosaurs stomping on the ground!
luv it. got 500w subw in my car :D
That's kinda what I thought. Metal hitting metal (or rocks) underwater, just like Jerry Was A Racecar Driver sounds like racecars zooming past for most of the song.
@Fuffy McBuffy John fish the Ocean Man
_Shake Hands with Beef_ sounds just like a fat guy in the McDonald's restroom.
Primus is one of my favourite bands and Les Claypool is one of my biggest influences on bass, this song is just so damn good. Also 2:22 Kirk Hammett is just chilling on the boat while Les, Larry and Herb are all rocking out
How am I just now finding this. I didn’t lead a sheltered life and have great taste in music. This is perfection!
High level power trios (Rush, The Police, Primus, etc.) always seem to have some incarnation of these same attributes. Top shelf bass and drums with a guitar player who understands the use of space and atmosphere over all else.
The drumming in this song is fucking ridiculous.
exactly! everyone focuses on the bass, while the drums are just as good in my opinion.
drums in this song might be my favorite of any song ever
you cannot have bass without drums. they are like 1 together
Herb is a monster, one of my idols!
Did you ever watch Deliverance?
Les Claypool. Plays weird, sings weird, looks weird. Auditioned for Metallica.
All these guys are on top of their game !! Perfect blend of guitar, bass, drums....
You know it might be unpopular opinion, but as great as Les’ bass is here, I’m more blown away by how good Tim’s drums. It makes the song.
probably one of my favorite songs ever to even be conceived
fuck yes!
One of the most underrated bands..ever. They had tons of talent.
Do have
The fills on the drums are wild!
Did anyone hear Thad Jarvis acoustic version of this? The kid is mad talented.
What about his buddy Stan? That kind can shred!
When I grow up I want to be,
One of the harvesters of the sea.
I think before my days are done,
I want to be a fisherman!
calling John the fisherman!
Jordan Johnson
*Cracks Carlton draught*
Here you go!
I love how much fun he looks like he's having, glad he turned his passion of fishing into a kickass song
Man,how could this band stay unnoticed from me rhe last 20 years?
I ditto that remark! Where have I been!
Same here...duhh
I had never realized after all these years coming back to watch this how good this looks for a video uploaded in 2005.
I love how the drums sound in this song. So snappy.
No doubt my favorite Primus track bc of the sickening drum fills by Tim Alexander. Insane stuff.
Next to John Paul Jones and Cliff burton, Les Claypool is a legend on the bass.
You have to respect John, he died doing what he loved. We should all be so lucky.
i love the drums in this song
Agreed! Tim Alexander = fucking beast.
Man it’s crazy how versatile he is, a master bass player, and the Batman, truly this guy has some talent!
Tim Alexander is one of the most underrated drummers of all time.
everyone says that about every drummer lol
I dig his style
Tried to show this song to my boss who's a passionate fisherman. You know what he said? "This sucks"
He’s onto something. 🍼
this looks like something beavis and butthead would watch
Mystery Of Autistics PRODUCTIONS cause u just dont get it
Wait... you get it!??!
Lucky for us.
They have a song about them
Mystery Of Autistics PRODUCTIONS 👍🏼😂👍🏼
Kirk Hammett lying on the boat, always thought it was Kid Rock!
Is that Kirk? I know him and Les we're buddies in high school. Along with Jim Martin from FNM
Could be anyone, doesn't look like Kirk lol
@@luvpants2012 It's Al Jourgensen of Ministry lying on the boat. Kirk is in this video though wearing the blue hat.
I've never listened to the band before. Yet it feels like ive known this guitar riff forever
You must be a fisherman in a past life
Do you watch South Park?
Its in guitar hero 2
Takes me back to skateboarding in the 90’s.
"Hey Les, wanna go fishing with us and the boys"
"Nah man, gotta think up a song for us to jam to"
"Aww come on man, it'll be fun, it'll clear your mind and give you some good ideas"
"Aight, you convinced me"
"Hey guys what if a commercial fisherman fucking died in our metal song"
1:51 Bit of a reference to Neil Peart’s second fill from the Tom Sawyer bridge (the double bass one). Well played, Tim Alexander.
Primus is one of the most talented bands I have EVER heard. Les Claypool is amazing on that bass!
I just got home from seeing les , ler, and herbage in Troutdale oregon! They sucked so bad! I loved seeing them , they rule! I became a fan back in August of 2021, I don't know how I missed their awesomeness all these years, but no matter, I'm a friend to the end now so....have a good you guys! Hey Les, did you hear me yell Les is more...I hope so because you are....peace to you all ....love ya...just one more thing...my favorite song is John the fisherman, but the song I looked up to play this morning was, here come the bastards,,, you know the rest...
