Watched this movie last night in a theater in Texas. There were only about 10 people in the whole theater and thank goodness it was like that as it gave everybody watching a personal space to be immersed in the movie and be vulnerable open heartedly in enjoying the movie. How the tears and laughter were so intertwined and back to back for audience was unbelievable. Isn't that how we live and respond to life! In actual practical life, naam namakkae poattukonda vaeli avasiyama enai enai sindhikka veikiradhu, even after it's been 12 hrs since I watched the movie, that question is haunting me. For someone like me, who grew up in chennai and working here in USA living with my wife and son, though heart wise like M, I think I need to do a better job in forgiving and letting go of bitterness that M does with ease. That to me is the success of the film. Like how a cycle changed M's life, this movie is a cycle that came back to me that I once had in childhood.
Oh wow very well worded sir. I feel like Arul at times, living in cities - in north India, most of my times, and missing my childhood in Coimbatore, things were just simple, sweet and to the point back then. I don't know how everything got so complicated so fast. Thanks for conveying the same feeling in a better way ❤

Easily one of the best movies I watched..I m going to cherish this movie like Anbe sivam, Charlie (dulquer) , Aruvi, Deiva thirumagal, Pursuit of Happyness, utthama villain (father son conversation scene, MS Bhaskar Kamal conversation scene) ...in the mentioned list i m gonna place this movie. Extraordinary...obviously flaw is there.. prem kumar's actors in 96 as well as this movie shadow the flaws...Karthi should definitely get award for this master piece. Govind Vasantha is third hero..Jallikattu, tamil pride are length..but I thouroughly enjoyed...love you da potato.. nee nallavan da... Engayo aravind saami vidhachadhu avarukkay fruits kuduthurukku...awesome... The way karthi explains relationship to Aravind sami was master piece.. Apart from can there be a person like this, Karthik’s character is what Arulmozhi (Aravindswamy’s character) would have possibly become if he had not left the village! Maybe that’s what gives Arulmozhi that mixed emotion towards Karthik’s character.

I remember watching 96 thrice in theatre back to back in the same week because the film was so beautifully made and nostalgic about so many things. Meiyazhagan is another all-nighter and a trip down memory lane from Premkumar. It has become very rare we get movies these days without any fights, revenge stories, songs, guns, or violence. This film is simply a three-hour drama that reminds us the only true thing about life is human connections - nothing else. Meiyazhagan is kind and sweet. I laughed, I cried, and I loved every bit of it!
I like the jalikatthu scene very much, for us, those born and live outside of India, it's something we learn on our roots! Even the conversation, Its bit lengthy, but worth talk about it. I just simply love this movie...
@@msukumar75 maybe they should have just had the Jallikattu issue alone. Since they spoke about Thoothukudi, Eeezham, education , etc. it sort of of diluted the focus on these issues. Don’t get me wrong, all these individually are definitely very important and serious issues and topics, but having all these delivered at one go made it appear a bit force fitted from the movie’s point of view. Other than that enjoyed the beautiful movie.

The place where the conversations were made represents arul's connection and involvment with M and M's level of expressiveness...First starts in bathroom then to the WELL then .. Dam and to the river...don't know its intentional or not
I loved hearing the way how you interpret the movie, yes the conversations usually after drunk is often switching irl as well so i am happy the director didn't compromise there and used that opportunity to improve the M's character. Although i wish Arul attended his sisters marriage in the morning.

I watched this movie yesterday in Salem Sangeeth theater sudhir, ofcourse second half conversation was little made bore, but in reality if 2 men's meet and speak all those things (politics, culture, cinema), first half very superb especially Arvind swamy subtle acting❤
It's probably one of the best movies this year. Vaazhai is the other one. I'm not sure which 18mins is taken out from the movie, but I suspect is the lengthy conversation of M about history primarily. I was wondering what's the connection to the movie, but Arul spoke about that to his wife, comparing himself to M. He felt insignificant, and was embarrassed about the agape love that M showered on Arul. It made sense, because he stopped the bus to see the temple, which M mentioned earlier. He wanted to see through the eyes of M. All this nuances can be done only by the director's vision. You were on point about the elephant. I was wondering if it was the same elephant. Director could have made him to touch or see or investigate if it was the same elephant. But he made Arul to show the emotions through the eyes. It made us think, what's going through his head. Overall, it was a really great movie, like 96. Prem Kumar has to make more movies, and I hope you will use new faces this time.
Hey, Sudhir. Lovely review. But I felt the jallikattu and the kaala maadu angle was important as it again comes back to the concept of anbu. Like you mentioned karma, Karthi's selflessl love on everything around him, makes him adopt the kaala maadu and take care of him. Ultimately, everything returns and so does his love in the form of the bull fetching him materialistic prosperity. The bull is as important as the cycle he gets in the movie I feel. He never took care of the bull expecting something or with plans. He tells he just saw it malnourished and started taking care of him. I feel it's a beautiful addition to the nuances of the script.

well did anyone understand the actual relationship. i thought the betrayers are Arvindswamy's dad's relatives and he is coming for the mother's side relatives wedding right? so confusing. then how come they are at this weeding? and the chithappa was mom's sides relative right, mom's sisters husband? the bride is chithi's daughter who is also rajkiran's sister i think. i also thought the movie would have been better relatable if arvind swamy knew who karthik was initially itself. the movie lost me when he did not know who he was.
At the very moment the ‘Jallikattu’ scenes / song was out in SM, it was blatantly evident even to a novice like me that this ‘insertion’ into the otherwise a story about two common people, IS PURELY by the 2D (aka Surya) Productions, who is NOTORIOUS for promoting the ‘separatist’ sentiments in the guise of Tamil pride.. That being said , I don’t know why ALL reviews ‘experts’ are seemingly pretending about this insertion? Though almost all reviews have uniformly stated that this portion does not gel well with the story flow.. It is a pity that Prem Kumar has to compromise / budge for such pressure from Production house to promote their ‘agenda’! Feeling so sad for the film and Prem Kumar… I respect HipHop Aadhi for his bold walkout from the Jalli Kattu poraattam; but also to speak out loudly the fact that the campaign was hijacked by malafide elements and had lost its original purpose .. he deserves a salute from me.
