  • This is what I do for my Maxamet sharpening service.
    I only sharpen Maxamet steel knives for customers, no other knives or steels.
    No exceptions. I want to be a custom knife maker not a professional sharpener.
    I'm using the Gritomatic Poltava Metallic Bonded CBN stones
    full review of these later, they are found here

    Do you ever use Porcelain hones instead of stroping? I used to use them a lot on my "cheap" victorinox kitchen knives and they seem to work great, but never use them on my pocket knives at it seems less precision/fine tuning.
    I am not afraid to muck up a cheap kitchen blade just dragging it to keep it sharp. I was wondering if there are more precision porcelain hones that work similarly.

    I had some trouble with my pm2 as well. What worked for me was to just keep the same angle maybe 16 degrees idk. I cut out the ultra fine finishing stone and just left it at an atoma 1200 I think. It might have been a 600 plate. It’s stropped with by some jend s sprays and had been awesome since.

    I am back to carrying a knife after many years without and picked up a Para3 maxamet
    I use knife to cut boxes and open packages, zip ties occasionally, stuff like that, I don’t abuse my stuff really
    My question to you,
    What supplies should I get to maintain my steel? Do I get strop and diamond spray and strop it fairly often and then don’t have to actually sharpen it or hone it?
    what edge do you think is best for my use? Toothy? If so what different microns or grits should I get?
    Want to keep the edge up nice and sharp but I don’t want to get too crazy spending tons of money on minor differences , what’s best bang for my buck ?

  • @cmfall1986

  • @RutgerMulder
    @RutgerMulder 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Those are some expensive CBN stones for their size. To me the Naniwa Diamond seem better value for money with more surface area. I guess you pay a premium for it being for a fixed rod sharpening system. What would you think about an Atoma diamond plate for the low grit (400?) speed + Naniwa 800 diamond finishing stone combo. The CBN stones not loading up does look very nice to me though. But you don't have that problem with Atoma plates and you won't be sharpening for that long on the Naniwa 800.

    • @FearNoSteel
      @FearNoSteel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rutger Mulder The cost comes down to the bond and thickness of the material. A 3mm Naniwa diamond would cost $400
      That's why they are 1mm of abrasive.
      That's a good combination, I have that combo. I like it. The Naniwa 800 finishes higher then the Gritomatic CBN 1000 too.

    • @RutgerMulder
      @RutgerMulder 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But do they wear at the same rate?
      The 1 mm diamond will last a long time and won't really dish. Will the CBN stone too? I mean if it lasts long you don't really need 3mm and they could make it thinner/cheaper. If it wears faster it might dish and you need diamond/other CBN to flatten it.
      The thing is the Naniwa diamond stone is 3x as wide and over 2 inches longer. So even at 1mm you got more abrasive in total than the CBN stones and you get a well know brand. One could also opt for the Venev diamond stones which are much cheaper at the same size and you get a 2mm coating on both sides of the stone for just $26.
      CBN is more costly to make than synthetic diamond and still softer. CBN is more heat and chemical resistant, but none of those properties are of value for bench stones. The only benefit i see is that it won't load up as fast. The CBN stones in a resin bond are much cheaper than these metallic bonded ones, but they still cost more than the diamond ones. And they don't have the little load up benefit of the metallic bond.
      The CBN stones seem to work great in your vid, but I am not really seeing the benefit of CBN as long as they cost more than diamond. Maybe a metallic bonded diamond is a future option?
      To me it seems like this value for money: Want speed at lower grit and it is not your finishing stone? get a diamond plate. Want a good finish and more control on the speed? get a resin bonded diamond stone.

    • @FearNoSteel
      @FearNoSteel  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been using that combination for almost two years now, it works but I'm a very demanding sharpener, I always want more performance, diamond plates suck. they cut too deep, and they tear out, which means you have to use light pressure and rapid passes, which is actually kinda slow. the man benefit to the coated crap is that its very load resistant and the price is great. The resin bonding finishes the best doesn't dish almost at all and doesn't tear out but the problem is the feedback sucks, the speed sucks, and they load up.
      So metallic bond and vitrified bonds have some advantages but the huge draw back is cost. I'm in the process of prototyping stones so I cant share more yet. what I can tell you so far is that my concern is more about bond compatibility with the abrasive more then knoop hardness, stone structure require heat treatment much like steels sometimes the temperatures that work best for the bonding mixture isnt the best for the abrasive.
      there are 14 different types of CBN abrasive grains to buy and diamond too, all sorted based on crystal shapes and coatings
      So I've found its silly to get tunnel vision on knoop hardness of the abrasive, similar to Rockwell hardness on steel, its much more involved, the micro-structure is crucial and I'm still learning and open to new things its based on real world testing not chart numbers

    • @FearNoSteel
      @FearNoSteel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like the Venev stuff very cost effective, the finishing isn't as good as the Naniwa diamond at the same grit but they are cheap cheap cheap. Great option if your focus on best bang for buck. I'd rather spend more though and get the Naniwa. More enjoyable, more performance.

    • @RutgerMulder
      @RutgerMulder 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your explanation. I have no hands on experience with this stuff so i like your sharpening videos. Nice to see you are trying new stuff for us.
      I saw on the Venev website that they do make metallic bond diamond grind wheels and those are not expensive at all.
      I´m currently just sharpening on my Naniwa Professional/Chosera 400-800-3000. But i'm looking at my options to expand for when i get into maxamet (if Spyderco makes more again) and other high vanadium steels. The lowest Naniwa diamond is 600 grit so i would need something before that. Maybe Venev for low grit then. I think it's better to spend the most on the stone you will finish on. For maxamet and other steels that need a good working edge i guess stopping at a 800 Naniwa diamond seems best. And then just strop with diamond paste.

  • @thomaswolf6507
    @thomaswolf6507 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Appreciate the step-by-step. Although, not everyone has access to this variety of sharpening tools (or is it feasible to pay for sharpening services) - I think if I could go back in time I'd swap my Spyderco Para 3 Maxamet for a Benchmade. Also, if I bought the knife again, I'd just buy the plain Para 3 - the blade patina itself I like, but living near the river, this thing does horribly with sand and water for the internal components of the knife, making for a lot of fuss on cleaning it (while most just need to be sharpened) - creates a situation where a more expensive knife takes more work/time to deal with than a less expensive knife.
    And the one spyderco pitfall I cannot stand - they don't honor the tips on their blades through warranty. Next knife will definitely be a Benchmade.
    I'll attempt to get this down to the lowest grit I have using your technique (I also learned to sharpen from both sides, but it was due to being ambidextrous. I find the dominant hand still applies more pressure though, something to watch for)
    Good content. Thoughts on the Benchmade Bugout?

I stop my work knives at 1200 but this is just for my high end ones. The 3k leaves a similar polish to the 1200 atoma and will get better as it breaks in more. I have a chosera full size lineup and kitiyama but I want a naniwa diamond to go with my diamond setup. I bet the 3k will look great by your video

    I've been thinking about doing my left hand so I can see when my edge is touching the stone like with my right coming towards me. I've got a pretty good routine with just using my right but I feel like sometimes some of my passes dont hit the apex or go a little too high but like you do I check it often and always make sure my burr comes up on one side and then the other the whole way before switching stones. And sometimes I get the burr down to nearly nothing before switching to my next stone but it doesn't really matter I've realized. I feel like I always have an issue towards the tip with having a tiny tiny burr there that I am forced to stropping it to make it go away. Maybe if I start using my left hand too I can fix it by being able to see my edge...I hope so! I have a KME and while its awesome I have switched to basically just free hand for the last year and only use my kme if I want a show piece type edge with a crazy mirror. I can get my free hand to whittle hairs and stuff but like with s110v I have an issue with the last 1/8th of an inch at the tip not being able to get my burr to go away. Damn thing! Going to just keep at it though! And now I'm thinking of getting the cbn stones for edge pro and using them like you do. Although I really like my atoma set and 3k diamind from ken schwarts

    Awesome video! I’m new to sharpening and just tackled my maxamet para 3. It cuts paper like butter, but my question is, other than feeling a burr, when do I know when to go up in grit?

    This really illustrates one of the biggest issues I had with sharpening early on....not taking it far enough. Running it on one side til you think “that’s good enough” isn’t, indeed, good enough. You *really* have to get all the way down on every part of the blade, both sides, with each stone. If not, you have a really shiny looking bevel that’s either dull or goes “coarse, fine, sharp, coarse” on different parts of the edge. Super embarrassing and frustrating...

    This is great info! New sub! I also just checked out your S110V vid. Question: What kind of grit would you normally finish on for an EDC knife in M390, prior to stropping? What about D2?
    I've got 3" x 8" Eze-laps, 150-250-600-1200, an ultra fine 3" x 8" Spyderco ceramic, and a CrO strop. Also, a couple of water stones and a bunch of SiC paper.

      Ruster Kat preference is king, also depends on the cutting job.
      I prefer the middle road. An 800 grit to a 1um diamond strop.
      That's my favorite.
      The 3k in the video I only use on special kitchen knives or for showing off. But not what I like on my edc

      @@FearNoSteel I always found D2 on 800 grit cuts like a beast. Anything finer and it doesn't have the bite. You make very good points about working knives vs. "show" sharpening.
      A lot of times a lower grit is the best for the task at hand and will last longer.

    Velcro also works well for a semi permanent solution for using gritomatic stones freehand. I've added couple small strips to each end of each stone so I can still read the labels. Conveniently enough, the standard width for velcro matches the width of the stones. The trick is to not use too much velcro, since the modern stuff is so strong it'll actually pull the adhesive off if you use too much. But with the right amount you can attach the stones to a larger piece of wood with an antislip thing on the bottom. Hope this helps someone.

      Make sure you get a burr and after that you just got to spend enough time on each stone.Also color the edge with a marker and run the stone across the edge to see if you are at the right angle.
